The first restaurant you'll notice when you arrive in Cold Spring is right by the train station. I visited on a weekday, and while most places in town were fairly quiet, this one was buzzing with people. I ordered the double cheeseburger with fries. They didn't ask how I'd like the burger cooked, and the patty was cooked to a standard doneness. It wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it was hearty, satisfying, and definitely filling. Nothing beats an ice-cold beer after a hike. Compared to Manhattan, the prices were very reasonable, making the meal feel like a great value. One of the best parts is the location right next to the railroad tracks--you can enjoy your meal while watching the trains pass by, which gives the place a unique charm. THIS PLACE CHANGED - not in a good way. We loved this place in the past. It was at the end of town with a nice large outdoor seating area. Well, this joint fills up with NYC nature seekers and think they are in Gramercy park. Therefore the servers pre judge you for being a snooty invader who keeps the joint open. One incident the greeter greeted me with " that dog is not included in your party?" When asked if outdoor seating is available. 8 tables were empty. Another time, same greeter, told us the wait was 40 mins. I utilized the rest room to only see that there were empty booths inside. We were dog less and she did not ask nor had the time to ask if we wanted to sit inside. The last time we went, late July, there was no snotty greeter. The greeter was one of the servers, so she had to sweat both jobs. Had my 10 pound dog! No comment. We sat down and waited. And waited and waited. Then an obviously overstressed male server, who was sick of his job, dropped some menus on the table and asked what shall he get us. Well sorry we did not research the menus on line before hand. Waited again. Finally ordered. We needed condiments. Waited. The place was packed. Two servers. The train blew by with its horn blasting. A drink would have helped. The burgers are good. Gonna try to eat inside one more time before I write this place off. Sad. read more

Cold Spring Depot doesn't take reservations and there was a line when we arrived. Surprisingly it moved pretty quickly and we were seated in about 20 minutes. There's some parking in front of the restaurant but good luck finding an open spot! We requested a high chair for our kiddo. The first one was broken and the replacement had a ripped safety strap. Unfortunately, they didn't have any others available. The unique thing about this restaurant is that it's right next to the train tracks. At first it was really cool watching the trains go by, especially for the kids. But they came by much more often than we expected and the novelty wore off pretty quickly. The trains are literally less than 10 feet from some of the tables. Not necessarily a negative, just something to know since it definitely shapes the dining experience. They do have a kids menu. We originally wanted to try the Chicken Tinga Egg Rolls but they were sold out that day. The fish and chips were good and the portions were huge. The fried calamari was also pretty good. The Double Double Burger was just an average cheeseburger. It was fine but definitely overpriced for what it was. We also ordered some kind of garlic bread that I couldn't find again on the online menus. It was toast with garlic, cheese, and some kind of jam spread. I really didn't like it. Service ranged from okay to almost absent. It was a holiday weekend and our waitress seemed to be covering a lot of tables so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Everything here was pretty expensive which made some of the misses harder to overlook. Overall, the train side location makes for a unique experience, especially if you have young kids who like trains. Stopped here after a long hike to to fire tower in beacon where I got to enjoy the westher, sunbathe on a rock and take in the view by the time we made it down we were starving and decided to stop for burgers at this restaurant. I cant tell you if it was my hunger but as I waited on line To get in everyones food looked mouth watering. When my garlic truffle sandwich arrived, it couldnt wait to dig in. It was supper tasty and in good for the price. The truffles fries were supperv. My friend ordered the double double burger(2 4oz burger patties w cheese and onion) and he had no complaints. I dind order cocktails but they looked good and decently priced. Best of all,is PET FRIENDLY. Overall an amazing outdoor sitting experience. Ok, to be honest -- I've been to the Cold Spring Depot twice, and each time I got the same thing -- so I'm truly giving five stars to the double-double burger, which is one of the best burgers I've ever had! I take that back -- I'm also giving the place five stars because the servers and other team members I encountered were all lovely. I've also gone at non-typical meal hours and noticed there's always a few people there, whether inside or out, enjoying the peace and quiet (until a train comes through and scares the hooey out of you!). Both times I sat, took my time with my burger and soda, read my book and just enjoyed the peace there. Definitely plan to go back -- and maybe next time I'll try something new! Once we arrived the staff didn't seem to acknowledge us much and after standing for 3-5 min we were finally greeted by Jorge C. Right from the beginning we could tell he had a very bad attitude, no smile no warm welcome. We tried giving him the benefit of doubt but once he took our order, we didn't even get to finish ordering before he walked away without asking us for our drinks! Food was decent nothing to rave about the waitress who brought out our food was sweet. Burger was very average and chicken sandwich was fresh made to order. The worst was yet to come.... As we were paying for our meal I hand him the credit card as I quickly ask to see the receipt since our train was coming. He then proceeded to ask a very presumptuous question of "how much would you like to tip?" I replied what I thought was a decent tip being that we weren't really ordering much and it wasn't very busy. He apparently wasn't satisfied with my suggestion because then he asks in a very condescending tone "was everything alright with your service?" I was completely shocked as he then tells me we "need" to at least leave 10%-15% as tip. I felt pressured in the moment and agreed with 10%. Never in my entire dining experiences have I ever been forced or coerced into tipping at a restaurant ! Especially being from NYC. Needless to say we will never be coming back here again. read more

I will say that the ambience makes up for a lot of this review. It's not too far from an underground interesting tunnel, right next to an old train station. The restaurant itself looks like it's an old train station that was reconstructed into a restaurant. There's indoor and outdoor seats. I didn't really take too many pictures of the food because like I said, the ambience in the area is the most appealing thing at least about this restaurant to me if I'm being completely honest. The train even passes by every once in a while, giving a unique aspect to it. However, I got the pretzel. The pretzel itself was hard. Wasn't a fan. And then I got a chicken sandwich which I will say I'd give a seven out of 10. My partner before we broke up ironically enough later on that day. Got a hamburger and he said it was better than a regular burger at McDonald's, but not anything that beats potentially a diner burger. Do with that information what you will. I got the fish and chips which came with fries, tartar sauce, goddess greens, and a wedge of lemon -- pro tip is to use the lemon on the salad and dip the fish into the Tabasco before tartar sauce. To be frank I did not have high expectations for Cold Spring Depot but they exceeded my expectation! I dined at this restaurant with my mom on Mother's Day and it was busy but was still able to be seated in the outdoor bar area. It was a beautiful sunny day and they have plenty of outdoor seating with shade. The loaded hummus platter inspired and surprised me!!! It had cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, capers, black olives, feta cheese and a good olive oil served with a buttery naan. I don't know why I've never thought of adding these things to hummus but I will never eat it plain again. My mom had calamari and cherry ancho wings. The bar tender was so sweet, catering and attentive. The whole staff was super nice as well. The food was delicious and will definitely be returning whenever I visit Cold Spring NY. Service here was very friendly and helpful on recommending menu items, plus glad they up on refilling the water often since it was pretty hot outside. For the food the cheesesteak egg rolls were great, plenty of seasoned beef and glad they were not piping hot. Do wish they had more cheese since it was not cheesy. Dipping sauce was on point. For the pasta Luna which is just spaghetti in fra diavolo sauce, good amount of squid and shrimp cooked just right and definitely a right portion of spaghetti. The Nashville Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich was huge. As soon as I saw the sandwich sitting on someone's table as I walked in, I knew that's what I wanted to order. The scent of the food here did not set me up for disappointment. The chicken was so crispy you could hear it. I personally liked the Nashville hot flavor okay, and it wasn't super spicy. The restaurant had a ton of outdoor seating, including seating next to the train (super cool if you ask me), but it also had a lot of indoor seating. Our larger group of 6 was able to fit comfortably at a table indoors in a section that was decorated to feel like a home. But the burger with the roasted peppers it was delicious. Quite soggy though and it fell apart. But it's a good messy burger. We were in town with our dog for the corner and we're just in time to beat the weekend summertime lunch rush. No reservations. We sat outside and our server set us up with a water bowl for our dog. Other outdoor tables had dogs with them as well so it seems like a popular place for dog owners. We ordered the pull apart pizza bread, chicken tacos, and double double burger. The burger was really the star of the meal. The other two dishes were nothing too special. We were in and out in under an hour, which is something we look for when dining with our dog. When we were leaving, there was a queue of at least 6 parties looking for a table, most larger groups with dogs and/or strollers. Worth mentioning that there were quite a few bees out and about, pestering most outdoor tables. Get the giant pretzel with beer cheese dip to share with your friends, definitely recommend. We found the loaded poutine a little much, though their fries are pretty good, just get them with a burger. Would recommend the spicy bbq chicken burger the most. And if you're feeling generous definitely splurge to get the garlic truffle fries - they were really a step up. Best way to end a hike. Terrible attitude of the staff!!! The child fell! An accident happened to my child today in this restaurant( My three-year-old son and I were leaving the door, my son was walking in front of me when a waiter ran up with a full tray of food and knocked my child down, he just didn't see him. My baby just rolled head over heels and fell. At that time, the waiter could barely keep his balance, the tray was wobbling and he was screaming oh my god. I was scared that he would fall with this tray on my child, I grabbed him by the shoulders from behind and helped him keep his balance. Luckily, the huge tray didn't fall. To everyone's understanding, they walk around there with trays with a lot of food and often with knives inside the burgers. And so the waiter disappeared, another waitress, a girl, is standing at that moment smiling, my baby is on the ground scared and with a bruised knee. It was terrible. But the worst thing is that no one came up to us to help us in any way. And even when we returned to our table, not a single person apologized, didn't even offer to put ice on our knee. We had to hurry to catch a train home to New York, so we quickly ate and left. And now my child with a bruised knee can't sleep because it hurts. Maybe tomorrow we'll have to seek medical help. I'm writing this in the hope that the restaurant management will see this and maybe react somehow at least here.
