Damn that burger was pretty good. Ok ok ok I just wanted to play along with name of this place...but to be more honest, that burger was REALLY DAMN GOOD! The sign outside says, "Voted best burger in town by some guy who likes burgers"...hah okay, I'm convinced ;) We entered the pub and were greeted by the two guys running the show, one of which was Doug, who were super friendly and chill. The place itself is super chill. Perfect place to grab a beer, have a burger, and chillllll out. I started with the Southern Tier Old Man Winter Amber Ale. Top 3 beers I've ever had, it was so damn good. For my burger I decided to get one with pepper jack cheese, bacon, and onions. That burger was so freaking good! Cooked to perfection, incredible meat. A very simple burger yet so memorable. The fries were super fresh and were some of the best fries I've ever had. A beer & a burger. We stopped in here last fall after being turned away (quite rudely) from two other places nearby. No bullshit here. We were welcomed in and offered two seats at the bar where we had lunch and a few beers, all of which were good. Doug greeted us at the door and we were sat immediately. This place is a no frills, local operation so I don't think it's fair to expect Michelin star service. We struck up a conversation with the bartender explaining we were from NYC up here to hike. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. We even saw Doug (who use to live in the city) lend some other hikers a flashlight! We were treated kindly and never experienced any discrimination. I've eaten here before, absolutely delicious food! But this is more so about the fact that we weren't let in because there were "no seats". (This literally just happened- Saturday evening) We didn't realize we needed seats to sit in a PUB. I thought it was discrimination of ethnicity but nope instead it's because we are hikers (he did it to a few other hikers). For the record, there were 4 seats at the bar....For those unfamiliar with Cold Spring, for years the town has had a lot of tension surrounding hikers and Breakneck because of issues like overcrowding. Just beware. Again, the food is great and it's a great pub so it's definitely a shame that we weren't allowed in because we are hikers. read more

There's a sign outside that said they don't take parties of more than 7, so our group of 9 figured we'd split into two groups, because surely a dining establishment can take 9 customers, right?! Wrong. We were basically kicked out the second a few of us walked in because they "can't take that many customers". The place was essentially empty. The man I surmise is "Doug" rudely told us they wouldn't take us because their kitchen was slow and incapable of handling this many people. So the logical thing is to turn away money they could make from 9 people for some potential distant future party of 2. Here's a thought: instead of turning away revenue, take the money and improve your kitchen. Also, take a seminar on how to run a business and interact with customers. read more

Met friends coming in from New Jersey here based on good reviews-what a let down. Each of us orders something different and all the food was sub-par and overpriced. One ordered the chicken tenders with fries dish, $16.95, (which was brought out ahead of the rest of our meals) and had only two chicken tenders. We brought it to the attention of our server, who said she would go check with the kitchen-came back and said that it was correct. She said we could talk to the owner, who was actually making the meals. He came out and said there were only two and we complained about the price for that, to which he said it's because the cost of chicken has gone up. We said that was ridiculous when boneless skinless breast can be bought for $1.99/lb. He again said his costs have gone up on his. He did end up taking it off the bill. The rest of the food priced at $18.95 per, were mediocre. A 6oz. glass of house Pinot Grigio was $14. All in all it was very disappointing. Will not be going back. read more

I agree that this is another hidden gem in the area! We walked in after leaving a place with a less than friendly reception and had a much better experience walking into this pub! The owner immediately greeted us and led us to a table and someone came right away with menus. We ordered two drinks which were very good and had a burger and a grilled cheese for dinner. Seemed simple enough and was definitely good! I wasn't expecting much and were pleasantly surprised. This pub has a great atmosphere, friendly people, and good food. I'd say this place is a pretty great pub, but I always admire modesty. Their burgers are excellent. No crazy toppings options like you'll see at trendy burger bar type places, but their is something for everyone. I went with the Oklahoma City Burger, which is topped with bbq sauce, cheddar, and onion rings. The wings here are some of the best I've had in recent memory. Another place that I really really like but sorta don't want anyone else to know about so that I can always get a seat. I've been coming here off and on for about 10y - I'll keep coming for another 10. This is a relaxed, fun, old school, local pub with a great selection of beers, a small but curated selection of liquors, and awesome burgers. My gf and I hike 8.5miles from Beacon to Doug's just so that we can reward ourselves with great food (she LOVES the hot dogs) and booze (Doug, Greg and Amber stir up a wicked Manhattan). Reliable and comfortable. Great place to hang out with the locals and grab a bite to eat. The jukebox has all the classics - go ahead, play something: everyone will like it. It was awful experience. I checked the rating before I go. People gave this place was great. I am telling the truth based on the fact. As I walked into the bar today and I was at the door,There was an old gentleman ( I think he is the owner) came to me (and my family) and said the place is full and tried to kick us out. He did not even say felt sorry, or any other explanation..and I was pretty sure that I found at least seats were empty and floor was entirely empty.typically bar should be full of people who is standing pn the floor. I do not believe that bar is full. No one was even stand up with two empty seat. I felt really bad and I stepped out because my wife felt bad.so I told him we did not feel to come in his place anyway. I cant tell the food is great or not because the owner kicked us out. We went to Doug's today and the food was very good. We ordered burgers and fish and chips. The peanut butter cheddar and bacon burger is a must try. Our friend is a vegan and asked if they could prepare the burger on a separate grill, and they were able to use aluminum foil to keep the bean burger separate. The service was great. I asked for hot sauce and Doug brought over a hot sauce caddy for me to try. He also brought over another boxed stash to share. That was great. For a dive "pub" this place is great! 5 stars for outstanding food and the best service I've experienced in a long time! Greg the bartender has the best personality and is Uber attentive! The locals are friendly and make you feel at home. If you are out for the weekend and want to do some antiquing then check out Cold Spring, but stay for the food and drinks! The conversations flow at the bar just as easy as the beers! Met an amazing woman who was in town visiting her daughter! Greg introduces everyone at the bar. There is a reason this place is called "pretty good" and not "excellent" or some better adjective. We walked up and the "host" with a mask around his chin with mouth and nose open and he says says "I have no seats", and that is. He didn't offer to put our name down on a list, he didn't greet us, he just stood there and stared at us. Clearly this place doesn't want to make money. read more

The burgers were great with a roasted red pepper spread and potato wedges. Doug's is, in the words of Larry David, pretty good, preeeetty pretty good. After burning tons of calories what better way to treat yo self and refuel yo self than a delicious burger. We arrived around 3:30 and so did the rest of the hikers so Doug quoted us an approximately 30 minute wait and we went off to peruse all the Cold Spring shops. 30ish minutes later we were seated, mouths-watering at the thought of food. Three burgers and three beers were ordered: 2 Captain Jacks and 1 Bleu, Swine, and Tears. For beer, I had the Southern Tier Nu Skool IPA and it was outstanding and super refreshing. I had to conscientiously not chug it to quench my post-hike thirst. The burgers arrived and they were terrific - perfectly cooked with unique topping combinations that really worked. The meat was also super flavourful, definitely high quality. I personally think the English muffin bun is great - it's not too breadth and adds a different flavour element. Also, the fries were bombbb so crispy so good. Our serve was attentive and sweet. You'll definitely get a fun local element here, too. Well done Doug's! read more

We were standing outside laughing at the sign, "Voted best burger by some guy who likes burgers." There was a man sitting on a stool outside when all of the sudden he got up, opened the door and literally ushered us inside. I was a little apprehensive because I don't drink alcohol and wasn't quite sure if it was an environment I wanted to be in. We were walking up the Main Street trying to figure out where to eat. THANK GOD THAT MAN SHOVED US IN THE DOOR. I believe he may have been Doug, I'm still not sure what happened because it was all so quick, but he pointed us to a table all the way in the back to sit at and we had no choice but to listen to him and sit. Don't be fooled by this place, everything is very thoughtful from both the drink and food menu to our waitress and the people in the kitchen. It's tightly and professionally run. And at first it may seem dark and no frills but it is very very clean and is not an average bar or pub. And on a hot day to sit in the back corner under the air-conditioning, it is very welcoming and actually cozy, away from the lunatic crowds on the Main Street. Drink Menu: I don't drink alcohol so I don't know anything about beer or any type of alcohol but I can tell you it is a highly curated and select craft beer menu made up exclusively with local artisan beers from NY; it's not mainstream beers. You will have to look at Doug's website to see what they carry and if you like IPA type beer, you will probably be pleasantly surprised by the menu. Read through the descriptions, you'll see something funny. Food Menu: the menu is a small pub menu, maybe 5-6 styles of burgers with fries and some additional alternatives. Each burger description sounded really delicious. Food: I just opted for a burger w/ American cheese, the other two girls ordered burgers w/ mushroom and cheese. They are 1/2 pound fat burgers. My burger was actually more fat than the other two for some reason, like a giant mound baseball. I ordered it medium, it tasted really good but the beef was a little dry. I think they use a very lean ground beef. My burger was really hot, the food is 100% made to order. I had to pick at the fries before being able to handle my burger. The fries were awesome, crispy, perfectly salted and really hot. Often times fries are not salted at all or oversalted but these you just eat, no need for condiment. They were so beautifully crispy and hot, I really loved the fries. However it's the two pickles, very fresh, very crisp and flavorful, possibly quick-brined pickles that were insanely delicious. They should sell a small bowl of pickles separately on the menu. Yes, there were only two, but they were not normal pickles, they were pickles delight, a really nice fresh contrast to the burger and fries and they really carried the burger. For some reason I think our server was Doug's wife, although I could be totally wrong, but it's a wild guess because she appeared to be the only one doing the service, at least in the back room. She was very nice and hospitable and came with a carafe of ice cold water for the table. In my mind she is Doug's wife and they are married. Like others stated, it's a welcome surprise. Don't be fooled by the bar atmosphere if you're not an alcohol drinker, Doug and his wife and the people that work here really know what they're doing. read more

I don't use superlatives, and I still won't in this review, but this place has some of the best burgers I've ever had. I got the burger with bacon and tomato preserves and the bacon was extremely crisp and the preserves the perfect combo of savory and sweet. The side of fries was more than enough. We arrived a little after ten on a Sunday night and, being the only place that was open on Main street- let alone serving alcohol, were quite pleased to be inside. The kitchen had closed but the service behind the bar was great and they had a few local beers on tap as well as not a bare bones liquor selection. I ordered a manhattan and the bartender joked that she had to dust off the glassware because they didn't get too many cocktail orders there. Definitely a shot and a beer kinda place. The locals only sniggered at me briefly, and before long we were watching the Winter Olympics together. College football on television, good 90's alt rock, and slamming beer selection. I was very content. The service was good. Environment was good. Patrons seemed good. Though one man went out of his way to assure us they weren't rednecks. Even though we didn't ask, and I don't think many rednecks live along the Hudson Valley area, so that was a little confusing. Visited this restaurant during Memorial day weekend and was not serviced. I am unsure if it was because I am a minority or an outsider, but this older gentleman wearing a hat literally walked me out of the restaurant the moment I walked in. As I walked in, I noticed that there were several seat available and the bar had a couple of seats open. I proceeded to sit at the bar to order food until the older gentleman asked me if he can help. I asked for a menu so that I can place an order to go, since my wife was outside near the water, and he said the they do not make orders to go. Which is the most bizarre comment I have ever heard. After he said that, he walked me out of the restaurant. I could not believe what had happened. I truly felt discriminated against since it was obvious that there was no one in the restaurant that looked like me. This man did not want to service me at all. I read an earlier comment about this same man. I do not know how this restaurant continues to treat customers this way. I had a horrible experience at Cold Springs and that will be the last time I visit this location. I do not recommend this restaurant or town to anyone. read more

We enjoyed this pub the 1st time we went and had to go back the 2nd time we were in Cold Spring NY. We were created by Doug, the owner, who held onto my wife's sun glasses for a year and returned them to us when we arrived. He many different types of beer on tap and allowed to sample a small amount from which ever one we wanted. Conversations with Doug are always interesting and fun! My wife and I had the bean burgers and fries. Still a delicious afternoon meal and we washed it all down with a couple of great tap beers. Doug's Pretty Good Pub hasn't let us down yet. This is a local bar and grill place, we had the Doug burger which comes with nothing on it but you have assorted options to add on at no cost, i added sautéed onions and bacon ,patty was huge but lacked seasoning,was on a English muffin bun which was great, also order a bloody Mary that looked excellent but lacked alcohol, tasted more like a V8 juice, for 2 burgers 1 bloody Mary and ice tea bill was $42, this could have been a great place to eat and hang out but they need to put more alcohol in there drinks and seasoning in their food. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here after a very long hike. The food and drinks were average casual pub fare but hit the spot for the hot day. I think they have a great selection of beers but I'm not much of a beer drinker so I wouldn't really know. But really the best part was the service. We didn't realize how far away we were from our car and thought we would just take a taxi from town to get back to where our car was. Apparently in this small town there are no taxis. So we were overheated and exhausted and we were going to have to walk two miles when the owner of the pub offered to drive us to our car, which we graciously accepted. I am not going to trash the place. I mean, from what I've heard it would be cooler with some kind of pool table or some form of entertainment aside from the eccentric movies on the TV... Which actually I did not mind. The food even looked really good, I did not indulge, but the drinks were super cheap and the bartender is awesome. The only reason I'm literally writing this review, and this is literally for the owner Doug, he has a whole bunch of Big Lebowski memorabilia all over the walls yet you are not allowed to curse and I think it should be mentioned that the big Lebowski has one of the most F words in film history so I found it slightly hypocritical. Although he did not necessarily kick me out because I did mention that I was in the army and also a New York native and honestly, there is no way to police that. This place also is literally the only bar in that tiny town... So give them business and give them credit. Just the no cursing thing is a bit much... but whatever. He paid for the power of the ONE bar in town. A dart board or at least a jukebox and ripping down the No Cussing signs would be a breath of fresh air. And tip your bartender! Not bad, owner just needs to pull back on the ego a dash... but like I said, this is America and he can do what he wants via capitalism. read more

Doug is the man, extremely kind and down to earth. Star was our bartender, she makes a perfect vodka/club and even recommended an IPA my boyfriend had never tried before (which is rare). We got there later so the kitchen was closed but Star hooked it up with some pretzels. If you're visiting the area or just cruising Main Street definitely stop by. I was out at Bear mountain with my friends, and they wanted to go to Cold Spring to check out the antique shops. I've never been over there before, but noticed an awesome sign outside of the Pub that made me laugh, and mentioned I was hungry, so thankfully were were able to go in. We went in and had a seat, and weren't sure if we should order from the bar or at the table, so my friend Rachel went to the bar to ask. The waitress was very friendly and said she would help us. We all got burgers, and the waitress noticed mine didn't have the tomato jam on it (without me even realizing), so without missing a beat she went back to have it put on. Talk about attentive! I don't know what some of the other reviewers are talking about, or maybe I had a different cook but the burger was one of the tastiest, juiciest ones that I have ever had.
