Nice quaint town. The place is right off the train. Used to be the train station that they turned it into a restaurant. Came during the week after hiking the Hudson trails. Having early dinner during peak hour whereby the train literally goes past you 100 feet away every 8-10 mins demanding you to pause your conversation and holding your glass so it doesn't spill. Laid back atmosphere. Typical bar food. Decent beer menu. Friendly service and comfortable space. Then again it's during the week and 5PM. read more

My five star review is strictly for the food. The food is always fresh, flavorful and makes my taste buds sing. This visit I was extremely disappointed with the bar tender Timmy. He didn't greet me and my party with a smile. Nor did he hand us A drink menu or tell us about drink specials. I asked for two different drinks. He responded to my first request "thank God we don't make those" and my second request he said he didn't have the ingredients to make it. He didn't suggest anything but did hand us drink menus. The drinks were very good. The bartender Timmy just wasn't friendly. He didn't ask if we'd like another round. Needless to say we had our one drink, ate our one dish and left. Our intention was to spend more time and money there. We sat at the bar with the intent of having more than one round. We just felt so unwelcome. Wanted to try different restaurants in the area to figure out our go-to but it was such a mistake to eat here. Other reviews were correct when they said that the food takes FOREVER. We waited 40 minutes and finally said something after the table next to us received their food first (after they had been seated much after we had placed our orders). The manager didn't apologize and just told us to wait one minute. Finally, after about 10 more minutes, our orders came out. But guess what? We had basically waited nearly an hour for cold food. None of us felt like waiting to have the food reheated (and definitely did not have the energy to complain) so we just ate it anyway-- not sure why it takes 50 minutes to bring out cold fries (our appetizer) and of course, the sandwiches (burger, french dip) were lukewarm. Besides the manager, I have to say that the other employees were pretty kind. Unfortunately, that doesn't make up for cold, subpar-but-overpriced food. Never coming back again. read more

We went to celebrate my birthday, and the wait staff was so helpful, kind, patient (my family can be a handful!).... and they even sounded really great singing 'Happy Birthday' to me when they brought out a surprise dessert with a candle. Was looking for Dog Friendly restaurant near where we were staying, came across this place in a google search, as it was 35 minutes away, called to make sure they were open got recording saying both outdoor and indoor dining was open, drove 35 minutes to find outdoor portion was NOT OPEN and could not bring dog inside, I told manager he really should add a line in his recording stating in case of inclement weather outdoor section will be closed, he was rude and obnoxious , saying that should be obvious ! I said really you have e covered portion, and lots of places have heaters , as there are not many dog friendly places in area, it's kind of upsetting to drive 35 minutes and have no place to eat ! The guy could not care less A TOTAL JERK , would never go to that place if they paid me, wish I could give negative stars, he easily could have set one table up in the covered area. In the post covid world how a restaurant manger could be so clueless to custom service and not even listen to a suggestion about adding a sentence to his recording is beyond me ! Upside to the story is found a pizza place up the block, Cold Spring Pizza, the owner went out of his way to actually put a table and chairs outside for us and the pizza was awesome, my bet is this Pizza place will be in business long after this dump closes ! Today, with temperature of 95 degrees, we were told we have to sit outside because there was no staff inside...why??? Move the staff inside. Waitress was unfriendly, curt in her replies, and not helpful at all. You have to pay for bread. Thank goodness they had ice water available! They have a unique idea of salad. It does not include lettuce of any kind. Asparagus and bean salad is just that. The "croutons" are tasteless cubes of dry toasted bread. You can't get a single burger only double. There is only one dessert.. The restrictions are numerous. At some point the inside opened and noone asked if we would like to move inside. Never again. read more

Visited area for the weekend and ordered take out from this restaurant. Their menu is online. I called 3x. 1- someone immediately hung up on me. 2- gruff host took 75% of my order and then said next two entrees were unavailable. I was like "ok, well I'll have to call back." 3- gruff hostess took 50% of my order and then told me my replacement two entrees were also unavailable and indicated "I don't know where you're looking but we haven't had that in a long time." Their menu is on their website. She warned me that food was taking about an hour to prepare. Just felt really crabby and incompetent. The staff needs to be retrained. Terrible and abrupt greeting as we arrived. No pleasantries were exchanged and there was no attempt by any of the workers to make us feel as though we made the right choice to spend our money there. Ordered a hamburger which finally arrived after a thirty-five minute wait. Three other tables were served prior to us, despite the fact that we had arrived well-ahead of all three tables. Food was mediocre and not worth the high price. Find another place to eat where the staff actually enjoys people and their jobs. I imagine management is the problem here. read more

One waiter thought it was a good idea to lecture my kids (aged 8 and 5) on the "10 tables I have to wait all by myself" as the reason he couldn't handle taking our lunch order for 20 minutes. From the outside I wasn't sure what to expect, even once we got inside I was questioning what quality of food we'd be getting but oh my god! My husband had the brisket over Mac n cheese and I had a ribeye special... one of the best meals we've had. Also, we split the calamari to start and the waitress made me eat the legs (which I've never eaten), no complaints! Hands down the most delicious calamari I ever tried. Okay, here's why I'm giving two stars: 1) Waitress was abismal! We spent almost three hours at this place because of her slow ass. It wasn't crowded, looked like we were one of 3 or 4 total tables assigned to her. She kept going MIA every 15 min. and would come back reeking of cigarette smoke. This lady resembled the guidance counselor in Beetlejuice ("Juno", the one with the gravely voice and cigarette smoke emanating from her neck...). Anyways, what should have been a relatively quick meal (burgers and fries) took waaaaay too long. We had to keep flagging down other servers to get basic necessitates met (ketchup, water refill, the check). None of them seemed even remotely surprised at what was going on or overly service oriented themselves. 2) Food was so-so/fair/hit or miss. Some of the items we ordered were very good while others were lackluster. The side salad (which isn't cheap for what you get - I think it's about $6 or $7) is tiny and comprised of ONLY lettuce. I'm not kidding, this is just a bowel of shredded ice burg lettuce (no croutons, not a sliver of carrot, or a tomato...just lettuce). The waitress clarified that the bowl of lettuce is indeed the chef's recipe for side salad (not some sort of kitchen prep error). So, while there's a few good things on the menu (and great live music if you go at the right day/time) be prepared for really lousy service and possibly questionable food. Why bother with any of that when there are so many neat restaurants to check out in Cold Spring? read more

My girlfriend and I braved the icy roads to eat here on our 2-month anniversary, and the food was laughably bad. Fortunately, we have a good sense of humor about this kind of thing. My bank account wasn't as forgiving. We ordered the BBQ ribs as an appetizer for $8. There were 4 ribs on the rack, but they were almost completely fat. It was hard to find any meat or flavor, and they were a bit nauseating. If you want good ribs in this area, look up Holy Smokes. She ordered the hamburger, which was flavorless. I ordered the steak sandwich, which was served as a slab of solid meat on a roll. I'm not sure who just picks up a steak and bites into it between the ugly layers of a bad deli roll, but I didn't think my mouth could handle it. I stole a plate from a neighboring table so I could at least cut the meat into edible pieces (since there was no room on my own tiny plate), and found that the steak was ALSO riddled with fat. At least four times throughout the meal I had to spit out gristle, asking my lovely girlfriend to kindly avert her eyes. The waiter was cold and arrogant, and obviously thought that he was somewhere that didn't suck. He was delusional. I don't plan on ever going back. This is mediocrity at its finest. read more

The location: gorgeous. The restaurant: oh jeez....my friend and I took a daycation to Cold Spring and decided on the Cold Spring Depot for lunch. Since it was encroaching almost 90, we sat inside, though many braved the sun sitting outside. The waitress was very nice, but service was extremely slow. We had only ordered salads and how long did it take?? No joke, 30 minutes! Fine, I'd understand if the place was packed, but we were literally the only ones sitting inside - there were some people sitting outside, but it was definitely not a packed house. Side note: this was a Monday afternoon, and it was only some greens that needed to be put together! The salads were ok - nature doesn't really mess up. I enjoyed my dressing, while my friend found her's to be extremely sweet. She had also ordered a strawberry margarita which tasted more like iced strawberry slush. The place itself was nice - pretty big and gave an air of being inside someone's home; they still had Easter decorations up so I'm curious as to how they would decorate come Halloween. I've never had a problem with the service, although it can become dicey when they have a huge crowd that wants to sit outside by the train tracks (for instance, during their "Octoberfest" celebrations). Oh boy, I had a good time here a couple weekends ago. I was in town with a friend to hike and we headed back to Cold Spring for dinner and drinks before heading home. We ate at Silver Spoon and then came here for a couple drinks since we remembered seeing it and thought it was some sort of beer garden. It sort of is. It's a little like a family restaurant diner and we sat outside and looked over their drink menu. The beer menu is unintentionally hilarious. The beer descriptions are absolutely incredible, in depth with really bizarre adjectives. Read it. In our delirious, post-hiking, post-drinking state, my friend and I were dying. The waiter thought we were a little nuts but obliged our request to split the beer with the most hilarious description (Captain Lawrence's Liquid Gold) after enjoying cocktails. The cocktails were actually great, I had some sort of tea, lemonade, vodka drink and my friend ordered a fruity bourbon drink. We sipped these and read the hilarious, historical placemats that you get at your table and enjoyed the trains coming and going. I can't speak for the food, although after a couple drinks we ordered a slice of apple pie with ice cream on it and that was great. Service was a little slow. The drink selection really was impressive, with a ton of beers available. It was definitely a cute mom and pop place, a little pricey, but seriously, those beer descriptions are worth it. read more

I am a fan of this charming pub-restaurant that sits alongside the Cold Spring railroad tracks. The restaurant itself is housed in the former train station, which dates from the 19th century. They come complete with a large outdoor patio for dining in nice weather. Just be prepared to be blasted out of your seat when Amtrak goes on through at its usual good clip. I've had a few different things here, and I can say with confidence that the burgers are great. And the fries! The fries are everything you'd expect from a french fry. The chili, while not necessarily "to die for," as the menu suggests, is pretty damn good and comes slathered in cheese. The French Onion soup is yummy, and the Fish-n-Chips is of very high quality, especially for a small-town pub. The only Fish-n-Chips I've ever had that surpassed these were the ones I had at a pub in England, but that is of course natural and expected. And unlike the British version, Cold Spring Depot's Fish-n-Chips do NOT come complete with an obligatory side of mashed peas! Yippee! In terms of other menu items, if you come during the annual Oktoberfest, you can get a bratwurst platter complete with German potato salad, cabbage and other goodies. A friend tackled this dish, along with soup and two German beers, a feat of no small consequence. Also, a group of older gentlemen entertain with German songs during the Oktoberfest festivities, which stretch from the end of September through the last weekend in October. They set up their instruments in the little gazebo outside the Depot and serenade diners every Sunday during Oktoberfest. It's fun and charming. When the season for outdoor dining passes, step inside and sit down at a table near one of the fireplaces. Some friends and I did this, and it's great to be all toasty warm while you wait for your lunch. It's also fun to gaze at the nearby bookshelves while waiting for your meal, because the Depot has an interesting selection, to put it mildly. A biography of Queen Victoria is stashed alongside "Wuthering Heights," "Cooking with Rosie," and "Childbirth without Fear." I think there's even something by Dr. Phil in there, but who knows. But you're not going to the Depot for the reading material. You're going there for the food. Don't let the sometimes slow-moving high school wait staff deter you - this place is charming, nice and always crowded on weekends. Pull up a chair and contemplate the menu as the trains go by - you'll have plenty of company. read more

First time in cold spring and checked out this restaurant for dinner after hiking for 3.5 hours at breakneck ridge. The food was really really great! The bacon and brussels appetizer was very tasty. It's not bacon bits like you would think, but rather two slabs of 1/4" bacon. I recommend the truffle fries. They come with this garlic sauce that will definitely make your breath smell, but it tastes out of this world!! The place is really big and can accommodate a lot of people. The only complaint I had was that the hostess was really flow to seat people. To the point where the line to get seated turned into 10 people unnecessarily. They need to hire more than one hostess. I actually started roaming around thinking that maybe I would just seat myself! Overall, I would recommend eating here (outside) after a hike. read more

After a day hike at Break Neck Ridge me and a few friends decided to stop in for a few beers and appetizers. We had to wait in line 20 minutes to be seated. There were empty tables all around us. It was completely ridiculous to be waiting to be seated as long as we were. We waited another 5-10 minutes for anyone to come offer us drinks. When she finally did make it around our server was very nice. The drinks didnt take too long to make it to the table, the food that was another story. But once it arrived it was very good. The food and drinks are good for a decent price, you just have to be willing to wait for them. read more

It was a nice place. I had friendly service. They were out of so many items! Oh no! No wonder our lovely waitress kept pushing the burgers! ha! She was attentive. I like that. The burger was a nice standard burger. The bread was soft and the fixings in the right proportions. The fries were delicious: beer battered. I could have had more of those. The duck salad was too sweet. I guess they wanted to balance the duck's muskiness? But to balance that, they should have increased the acidity of the dressing. In spite of the cool outdoor locale, the crappy food and clumsy service was a big disappointment. Avoid the shellfish (as has been said before), which may as well have been frozen and thawed before serving (oysters will no flavor and watery with ice on top). As a visitor to Cold Spring, I was hungry and ready to eat whatever I could get my hands on. It was a busy Saturday afternoon with many of the restaurants in town packed to the gills. But the Cold Spring Depot was ready to take us as to a table as soon as we walked up - most likely because it has the largest seating area I saw. Overall nice staff, nice bar and a good atmosphere for all ages. But talk about the slowest service, it took 2 1/2 almost 3 hours for us to lunch on some cold sandwiches and salads. A restaurant inside an old train station (train still comes by, but doesn't stop) lined with bookshelves and a cozy little fireplace. The cheesy Valentine's Day decorations were unnecessary. There's also an outdoor space for the warmer months & and ice cream shop nearby. It was cold as hell when I came, and I intend to come back in the spring/summer! We ordered the chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie. This place is known for serving up great comfort food, and both dishes were yummy. The shepherd's pie came out a bit cool and the chicken pot pie super piping hot ...but they both came at the same time. We went on a Friday afternoon for lunch after driving along the Hudson River...and it's definitely a cute spot for a lunch stop. From the outside, it looks like a train car and inside it's decorated very homey with a few fireplaces and everything...all very quaint. It was too cold for us to sit outside, but it seemed like outdoor seating would be great if the weather were nice enough. The food was pretty good--no spectacular surprises, but something good you'd expect from a good lunch spot. I had the chili, which hit the spot on a cool day...and a friend I was with really enjoyed the cornbread stuffing on one of the turkey sandwiches. I do have to say that there were a lot of options to choose from...and many of them looked good, so you won't go short of options. I went for burgers tonight with my parents. This is a very quaint place. We had asked about eating inside but dinner was only being served outside. We were seated by the hostess and waited about 15 minutes until the waiter came to the table. I was very surprised when I saw the menu was limited: some soup, a couple appetizers, 3 kinds of burgers, and fruity salads. I thought I would see more variety on the menu. I had the cream of broccoli soup but really did not like it as it was very salty. My mother enjoyed her clam chowder. We each ordered a house burger. They were great. We had expected service to be laid back, no rush, but it was very slow. I plan on returning in hopes they improve! read more

I've been here three times within a rather short period of time. 1 great experience (first time) 1 good experience (second time) and a really lousy experience. I must say, that the food is always delicious, and it's an atmosphere that is second to none. Cold Spring is a beautiful old town and this restaurant encompass that feel. The portions are small and the prices are high. The service on my last visit was atrocious, many other reviewers seemed to have similar experiences. Unfortunately I will not be coming back because it now gets low marks on portions, price, and service. I'd still recommend checking it out for a drink perhaps. read more

This is always my go to spot when I'm in Cold Spring. I've actually taken the train up from the city just to come here several times (I don't need hiking as an excuse haha), like Oktoberfest. It's the perfect place to come spend a day outside and relax. Everyone who works here is super nice. Shout out to Walter, Tim, Virginia, and Tommy. The food is incredible and the beer selection is wild - so many craft brews and always something new to try. I can never resist a giant pretzel, beer, and the double double burger - unless it's Oktoberfest, then I order one of everything! The salads are really good too if you're trying to keep it healthy! Added bonus: they allow dogs! I don't have one, but it always makes my day to be seated next to some really cute pups. I should also mention how well they have handled Covid! read more
