Maybe it was an off night or perhaps a not so funny joke but when you order chowder to go, you assume you're going to get it in a container with a lid. Fair assumption right? Well, our assumption was completely off tonight as we were shocked when we opened our takeout bag and found a box container filled with our chowder with a foil lining. Yup. A box. The same box they use to plate their tacos and fish plate. But with a strip of foil. Nothing else to seal it in or keep it from spilling. Since my husband had no idea that the soup was packaged this way, he didn't know to keep the bag leveled so yes, you guessed it. Spillage occurred. No heads up from the staff like, "Hey sorry we ran out of containers tonight so please be careful." Nope, none of that. It bums me out because as locals, we know how expensive eating out can be so when we do decide to eat out, it's a treat and when things like this happen - it hurts. Food wasted, money you'll never get back and you're still hungry and now scrounging around the house looking for something to fill the belly. It's even more sad because up until this point , we enjoy coming here occasionally when we're craving their tacos and fish plates. We even take family here when they're visiting. I wish this didn't happen but I also can't dismiss it. Not sure if management changed but if they're reading this, please just take the chowder off the menu for the night if you're going to pack it like this. read more

Da best! We found this little gem due to proximity - a quarter of a mile from where we were staying. It is a fast casual restaurant with counter ordering and food prepared to order. While there was ample seating inside and out, we took our food to go so we could watch the Olympics. The food was so good that we came twice. The coleslaw is the best that I have ever had - a tangy delight with just a hint of pineapple sweetness. You cannot go wrong with their super fresh ahi poke or the well prepared Mahi Mahi in Asian Flair sauce (that ginger wasabi combo is NEXT LEVEL). The fish tacos are best eaten at the restaurant because they get a bit soggy, but they are still delicious falling apart. The pork is pretty good. I would skip the chicken as it was a bit dry and the fish is so excellent. The mixed green salad was a solid choice - mixed greens with peppers and onions in a pineapple vinaigrette. I do not leave bad reviews, but this is an exception. A friend and I stopped by for dinner. She ordered calamari & seafood chowder. I ordered blackened tuna with brown rice, cole slaw & we had a basket of onion rings. The calamari was rubbery with a thick breading. The onion rings were more panko than onion. My fish was barely warm and the rice was cold. The cole slaw dressing was terrible and one bite was enough. The icing on the cake was when an employee asked if we enjoyed our dinner. When we explained the issues we had, he said "I'm sorry to hear that" and walked away. Terrible food and terrible customer service. I'm sorry I'd prepaid my tip at the register when ordering. We spent $60+ and left 90% of the food on the plates because it was so bad. Do yourself a favor & eat at one of the local food trucks for fresh hot seafood. read more

The staff was very welcoming and nice. The decor was super cute and the place was clean. I was just a little surprised by the lobster roll. Our first visit was definitely our only visit. We went because a friend told us Coconut's has a laid back vibe. I can't say that I agree with that. It felt pretty sterile imho. After ordering food at the counter I was looking at the beers and was told that they were "out of every beer but the golden ale and a few of the wines". I went ahead and ordered the golden ale and was told they would deliver it to the table. When our food arrived I mentioned that I never got the beer and the server went to get it. I've eaten a lot of fish tacos over the years, but the ones at Coconuts Fish Cafe are like no other. As the home of the "#1 fish taco in Hawaii," this establishment has two locations in Kihei, which speaks to their popularity. We came for an early dinner around 4:00PM and were able to place our order immediately. The four of us each got their famous fish tacos, two of which are included in each order. Although that doesn't seem like much, they are humongous and stuffed to the max! We also couldn't resist sharing a bowl of their seafood chowder. Our order was ready after about 15 minutes, and we drove a few miles back to our condo to eat. Surprisingly, our tacos remained intact all the way home thanks to their use of slightly grilled tortillas. They ran out of bowls for the soup, so they packed it in a square foil-lined compostable container that held up well. + FISH TACOS ($16.95 for 2): These hefty tacos were filled to the brim with pieces of Mahi Mahi and Ono, cabbage slaw, mango salsa, tomato, cheese and red sauce. The fish was really flavorful! I'm used to fish tacos that contain a single large piece of fish, but I actually enjoyed this chopped style since it provided more surface area for a coating of seasoning. A hint of what I believe was wasabi in the cabbage slaw added a surprising bite. Then came the sweetness of the mango, slight acidity from the tomato, and a final pop of pizzazz from the red sauce. The combination of flavors all melded together seamlessly. + SEAFOOD CHOWDER ($11.49 for bowl): Although a little on the salty side, it had a good amount of Mahi Mahi and Ono, potatoes and some clams. Since it's called a seafood chowder, I would have liked to see more variety... perhaps some shrimp, little scallops or mussels. Nevertheless, it was creamy, and the bowl was the perfect size for us to each get a small serving. Despite these tacos being really tasty, they were not easy to eat. After the first couple bites, my cabbage slaw and mango kept falling out. It piled up in my container, leaving me a small salad to later pick up with a fork. My mom actually gave up trying to hold the tacos and ate them with a knife and fork from the beginning. Oh well, I'd say these were worth the mess! read more

Pretty much a perfect "first meal" after we settled into our airbnb. It's a great spot to grab a quick bite, and thankfully there wasn't a wait on a Friday at 2pm. We ordered their famous fish tacos and a side of coconut shrimp + fries. Served as a pair, the tacos were huge and delicious! Topped with a sweet mango cabbage slaw (of course, with some optional hot sauce), it was tasty and different than the fish tacos I'm used to in Southern California. The coconut shrimp was delicious as well. The batter stayed crispy through the whole meal, and we could actually taste the coconut through each bite (you'd think that's bare minimum but you'd be surprised with some of the "coconut" shrimp you find here in Socal...) Service was great, patient, and flexible! The food and place is great but compared to the hype of articles online, it was a bit expensive and not necessarily a must-go. Food (5/5): Ordered the coconut shrimp and chips and the fish tacos. Some friends of mine got the seafood chowder and and the local style grilled Ono plate. All the dishes were pretty good! The coconut shrimp and chips was the right amount of crispy and the fish tacos tasted fresh. The only thing is that the coleslaw wasn't the tastiest and the taco ingredients should've been split across three taco shells since the ingredients spilled out. Service (4/5): You order at the stand before you can sit down. They'll bring the order over to your table and you can get water on your own. The food came out moderately fast at around 10 minutes. Yum! Famous for fish tacos so we had to try them! The fish tacos were different than any kind we've had before. I think what made it such a great taco was the combination of really fresh fish and a delicious creamy sauce from the coleslaw. You can even get the salsa and mango and coleslaw topping on the side to add onto the taco if you prefer. Unfortunately, they do charge a one dollar fee for the boxes to take it to go. And the tacos are bit pricey because they run about $20 for two but, we shared it along with some appetizers. My parents loved the calamari appetizer and said it was really fresh. I'd let customers choose two and charge an "upcharge" if they'd like, what's the prob, brah? The tacos are packed with 17 ingredients including a homemade mango salsa and a crisp and tangy cole slaw! We got into Maui 3 days ago. We landed at about 4:30. By the time we got our car, bags, etc. (plus the 4 hr. time difference from Texas), we quickly found the north location per YELP. We had 2 kids meals, 1 teriyaki chicken sandwich, one macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi and two fish taco order (2 tacos each), plus a started of the coconut shrimp. Everything was outstanding....especially the LOADED fish tacos - which we learned is kind of their "go-to" dish. No way you can gracefully eat them with your hands. Too big, too full of fresh goodness. The surprise of the whole meal was their cole slaw. It's made with coconut milk (of course!) and maybe some wasabi?? It's very unique and very good. The next night our kids were at a work event and we asked our grands where they wanted to eat...."that place we ate yesterday" was their unanimous choice! This time we went to the more southern location (I think...directions are difficult for me in Hawaii). It's larger and they serve beer and wine. I'd strongly recommend the Maui Brewing Co. lager. The food was just as good as it was at the previous store. The service at each store was courteous, prompt and attentive.
