We got into Maui 3 days ago. We landed at about 4:30. By the time we got our car, bags, etc. (plus the 4 hr. time difference from Texas), we quickly found the north location per YELP. We had 2 kids meals, 1 teriyaki chicken sandwich, one macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi and two fish taco order (2 tacos each), plus a started of the coconut shrimp. Everything was outstanding....especially the LOADED fish tacos - which we learned is kind of their "go-to" dish. No way you can gracefully eat them with your hands. Too big, too full of fresh goodness. The surprise of the whole meal was their cole slaw. It's made with coconut milk (of course!) and maybe some wasabi?? It's very unique and very good. The next night our kids were at a work event and we asked our grands where they wanted to eat...."that place we ate yesterday" was their unanimous choice! This time we went to the more southern location (I think...directions are difficult for me in Hawaii). It's larger and they serve beer and wine. I'd strongly recommend the Maui Brewing Co. lager. The food was just as good as it was at the previous store. The service at each store was courteous, prompt and attentive. If we lived here (who the heck can afford to live here!?!) we'd eat here every week. Aloha, y'all! read more

Omgg best service I received for my time in maui. Even with the divided room, they still came in and asked if we needed anything else, took dishes right as we finished em. Obv not fine dining level, you still get your own water and order at the register, but just so friendly. The calamari was enjoyable as instead of rings it was like thick steak fries but in squid form. The macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi had a great creamy sauce and crust too. Shrimp was on the greasier side, but wasn't dried out. Price is typical, but overall a lot of seating and pretty good food besides the typical hype places. One thing I did not like was the fish taco though :(. It came in lovely huge portions (2) with mango salsa but it was dry and lacked succulent/flavor in the fish itself. A bit surprised since its one of their top items and a lot of locals seemed to order it. I recommend coming here for a casual dining exp with lots of other yummy menu items though! Also tried the tiger sauce- expected it to be spicy but it was kinda sweet like Worcestershire sauce. Mainly self serve which is great because they keep the utensils stocked. read more

Parking was easy in the strip mall, and ordering was your typical fast food counter - grab soda and condiments type of ordering. There were a few people ahead us us and still plenty of seating available inside and outside. We grabbed a seat outside next to all the wild chickens (good thing we didn't order chicken) and waited about five minutes for our meal. We had the fish and chips and the coconut shrimp and chips. The fish was great - hearty and crunchy and substantive. I liked the tartar sauce and slaw it same with. Coconut shrimp was also great, as were the fries - although (this is not a bad thing) - they were not necessarily as "unique" an experience - just solidly done thin cut fries and fried shrimp breaded with coconut. I have to say the staff patiently dealt with some very unusual requests when we were there - like one guy insisting his fish was chicken (it does not have the same texture as cod) and another guy wanting extra coconut for his coconut shrimp. read more

Best fish tacos I've had...not just on Maui. Only menu item here that I have had is fish tacos. I heard great reviews about them, and once I tried them, that's all I want if I go there. Delicious generous portion of mahi and the mango salsa topping is so good and everything piled so high you can't fold your taco. Based on tacos alone, 5 stars. Usually if I go out I want entertainment or craft cocktails, which this place does not have, and I don't easily give out 5 stars. Randomly came here for a second lunch and it did not disappoint. Shared the fish and chips which came with fries, coleslaw, and homemade tartar sauce. It came with 2 big fillets and was perfectly fried and crispy. There was seasoning on the outside and the breading was thin but gave it the perfect crunch without it being all fried bits. The fish itself was super tender and juicy and just needed a squeeze of lemon. You can taste the freshness of the fish and how flaky it is. The fries were fried perfectly with a subtle crunch on the outside. I wouldn't call it a traditional fish and chips dish but the subtle breading helped me taste the fish a lot more which should definitely be the star of the show. read more

Had the most delicious and freshest meal yesterday. After exploring Haleakalā National Park, we returned to Kihei for an early dinner. It was not busy at 5pm but the line ups started around 5:30-6pm. You order and pay at the counter. If sitting outside, no liquor is allowed. The restaurant is clean and spacious and liked the surfboard seatings. Free parking on the complex. Very helpful staff in answering questions and making accommodations. I had the mahi fish with lemon sauce, brown rice and coleslaw. The fish was so moist and the flavours exploded with a nice mild lemon note. The tartare sauce was also nice and not overpowering. The coleslaw was the best I ever had on all of Maui. It had a nice sweet flavour and the mayonnaise was not heavy. Best meal I had for under $20! I also added a side Caesar salad which was fine. After stopping at South Mahi Fish Company, a couple we were sharing the bench with recommended us to checkout Coconuts which is their favorite on Maui. The cafe is cute and has more seating. We ordered their coconut shrimp appetizer and two orders of fish tacos. These were the best coconut shrimp we've had. The outside is crisp and has strong notes of coconut, with the inside being well cooked shrimp. The fish tacos were a 8.5/10 for me. Still excellent but not my cup of tea. There's slightly less fish on these in favor of a larger slaw. The slaw is very refreshing and generously topped with fresh mango. While eating, there's too much slaw - it just goes everywhere and it's a bit mayo forward. Just grab a fork to scoop up what falls off and these are still the next best tacos to try out! read more

My favorite fish tacos in Maui! Coconuts is killing it and I want to introduce this franchise to California. Their flavors are bomb!!! We went yesterday as it was recommended to us by family. It is very cute cafe and the ambiance of the restaurant is great. We ordered fish tacos and fish and chips. They were fast with our order and only waited 5-10 minutes after paying. The lady at the register was nice. We got two fountain drinks that are unlimited refills. Unfortunately when we were there they had no lids. So we were offered a different cup that was slightly smaller but not a huge deal. I am actually not a huge fan of any seafood which I understand is ironic to go to a fish cafe. But the fish tasted good. My husband got the fish tacos and I think I enjoyed those more. There isn't too much to say about ambiance, it's Maui and it's casual so feel welcome to arrive in your comfortable clothes. The staff and service are phenomenal! It's a friendly and vibrate place. However, the food was just ok. It's nothing to rave or hype over. I get that this is Maui so it has its own take on food. The fish tacos were disappointing. It was heavily drenched in mayo coleslaw with some sort of mango topping. It doesn't hide the fact that it isn't a fish taco! Those who know their food would know what a fish taco is. We also had their macadamia crusted mahi mahi. It was not crusted at all. The mahi mahi should had been coated in the mixture. It was just macadamia nuts sprinkled on top. It appeared someone got lazy and forgot to coat it. The coconut shrimp was heavily coated in a thick batter. I taste the batter more than the shrimp itself. Even their chicken fingers for our kids was oily and greasy. It's a hole in the wall fast food joint. The location is on the smaller side, and we sat outside. The tables and chairs were a bit flimsy, so we had to remind the kids to be careful while eating. The poke and chowder were definitely the standouts -- both were really good. The mahi-mahi plate with the Asian flair could've used a little more seasoning, and the coleslaw wasn't really my style -- the pieces were a bit large and it leaned heavy on the mayo. The fish tacos had great flavor but would've been even better with a little more fish and a little less of the coleslaw topping. Overall, it was an okay stop, but I think there are probably better options nearby. read more

When my wife & I went into Coconuts for diner. I asked the employee for their most popular fish plate and was suggested the Macadamia Crusted Mahi-Mahi...so I went with that. My wife ordered the Teriyaki Chicken plate. Maybe we caught the cooks on a bad day....my wife's chicken was so dry and tough that she left over half of it. My fish was also over cooked.
