Maybe it was an off night or perhaps a not so funny joke but when you order chowder to go, you assume you're going to get it in a container with a lid. Fair assumption right? Well, our assumption was completely off tonight as we were shocked when we opened our takeout bag and found a box container filled with our chowder with a foil lining. Yup. A box. The same box they use to plate their tacos and fish plate. But with a strip of foil. Nothing else to seal it in or keep it from spilling. Since my husband had no idea that the soup was packaged this way, he didn't know to keep the bag leveled so yes, you guessed it. Spillage occurred. No heads up from the staff like, "Hey sorry we ran out of containers tonight so please be careful." Nope, none of that. It bums me out because as locals, we know how expensive eating out can be so when we do decide to eat out, it's a treat and when things like this happen - it hurts. Food wasted, money you'll never get back and you're still hungry and now scrounging around the house looking for something to fill the belly. It's even more sad because up until this point , we enjoy coming here occasionally when we're craving their tacos and fish plates. We even take family here when they're visiting. I wish this didn't happen but I also can't dismiss it. Not sure if management changed but if they're reading this, please just take the chowder off the menu for the night if you're going to pack it like this. read more

My friends and I were visiting Maui and staying in Kihei. We stopped here for dinner one night as we wanted something casual. The line was quite long but it went pretty fast. Our food came out fast too. I had the Fish tacos: Two tacos grilled with white corn tortillas, cheese, tomato salsa, famous coleslaw, tomatoes and mango salsa. The fish was a mix of ono and mahi mahi. I really liked the flavor of the fish and all of the toppings. It was a filling portion. My friends both had salads with different fish on top. They really enjoyed their meals too. Nice casual place where you order at the counter. read more

I've eaten a lot of fish tacos over the years, but the ones at Coconuts Fish Cafe are like no other. As the home of the "#1 fish taco in Hawaii," this establishment has two locations in Kihei, which speaks to their popularity. We came for an early dinner around 4:00PM and were able to place our order immediately. The four of us each got their famous fish tacos, two of which are included in each order. Although that doesn't seem like much, they are humongous and stuffed to the max! We also couldn't resist sharing a bowl of their seafood chowder. Our order was ready after about 15 minutes, and we drove a few miles back to our condo to eat. Surprisingly, our tacos remained intact all the way home thanks to their use of slightly grilled tortillas. They ran out of bowls for the soup, so they packed it in a square foil-lined compostable container that held up well. + FISH TACOS ($16.95 for 2): These hefty tacos were filled to the brim with pieces of Mahi Mahi and Ono, cabbage slaw, mango salsa, tomato, cheese and red sauce. The fish was really flavorful! I'm used to fish tacos that contain a single large piece of fish, but I actually enjoyed this chopped style since it provided more surface area for a coating of seasoning. A hint of what I believe was wasabi in the cabbage slaw added a surprising bite. Then came the sweetness of the mango, slight acidity from the tomato, and a final pop of pizzazz from the red sauce. The combination of flavors all melded together seamlessly. + SEAFOOD CHOWDER ($11.49 for bowl): Although a little on the salty side, it had a good amount of Mahi Mahi and Ono, potatoes and some clams. Since it's called a seafood chowder, I would have liked to see more variety... perhaps some shrimp, little scallops or mussels. Nevertheless, it was creamy, and the bowl was the perfect size for us to each get a small serving. Despite these tacos being really tasty, they were not easy to eat. After the first couple bites, my cabbage slaw and mango kept falling out. It piled up in my container, leaving me a small salad to later pick up with a fork. My mom actually gave up trying to hold the tacos and ate them with a knife and fork from the beginning. Oh well, I'd say these were worth the mess! read more

Ordered the shrimp basket and was very tastey and fresh. Will come here again. Was a good place for a light lunch

Was brought Coconuts Fish Cafe for lunch and was so impressed. Not sure what kind of fish it was but it was the fish taco with mango. Wow it was perfect blend between spicy and sweet and the slaw was so fresh. Was a lot of food so I ended up eating 1 only and the other for later. Will definitely come here again. read more

I do not leave bad reviews, but this is an exception. A friend and I stopped by for dinner. She ordered calamari & seafood chowder. I ordered blackened tuna with brown rice, cole slaw & we had a basket of onion rings. The calamari was rubbery with a thick breading. The onion rings were more panko than onion. My fish was barely warm and the rice was cold. The cole slaw dressing was terrible and one bite was enough. The icing on the cake was when an employee asked if we enjoyed our dinner. When we explained the issues we had, he said "I'm sorry to hear that" and walked away. Terrible food and terrible customer service. I'm sorry I'd prepaid my tip at the register when ordering. We spent $60+ and left 90% of the food on the plates because it was so bad. Do yourself a favor & eat at one of the local food trucks for fresh hot seafood. read more

Best food on the island! I had the coconut shrimp, fish tacos and mahi mahi and everything is DELICIOUS! Also my wife doesn't eat seafood so she ordered the chicken tacos and they are amazing as well! You may think a chicken dish at a restaurant that serves a good amount of seafood would be boring. NO! They actually care what is coming out of the kitchen. It's like they want us to have the best of the best! If someone orders coconut shrimp, mahi mahi, fish tacos or chicken tacos they want to serve us the best you have ever had! Super impressed! Thank you Coconuts Fish Cafe! read more

Dropped by Coconut's for a quick lunch. Order at the register, they bring your food to the table. No Beer? At the beach? - minus 1 star. Her fish tacos were pretty good, my chicken sandwich was rubber. No sides (unless you order them at an additional cast. Pretty disappointed to spend $40 for 2 tacos and a chicken sandwich, with water. read more

The staff was very welcoming and nice. The decor was super cute and the place was clean. I was just a little surprised by the lobster roll. It was chopped like a spread and heavy mayo instead of hearty lobster pieces. My husbands pulled pork was just ok too. Nothing bad to report just ok compared to what I expected from prior reviews. read more

Pretty much a perfect "first meal" after we settled into our airbnb. It's a great spot to grab a quick bite, and thankfully there wasn't a wait on a Friday at 2pm. We ordered their famous fish tacos and a side of coconut shrimp + fries. Served as a pair, the tacos were huge and delicious! Topped with a sweet mango cabbage slaw (of course, with some optional hot sauce), it was tasty and different than the fish tacos I'm used to in Southern California. The coconut shrimp was delicious as well. The batter stayed crispy through the whole meal, and we could actually taste the coconut through each bite (you'd think that's bare minimum but you'd be surprised with some of the "coconut" shrimp you find here in Socal...) Service was great, patient, and flexible! I wanted to order fish tacos to-go (for a late night snack), and requested the tortillas to be kept separate, but they ended up splitting everything separate so that I can assemble it on my own later. I really appreciated that! Make sure you add the south of the border sauce! It's made in-house and adds that extra *umph* to the food. Yelp 2023 Adventures - 5 of ?? read more

A nice casual take out or order and get your food. A non sense place, but they seem to do it well. Came here for some coconut shrimp and macadamia crusted mahi mahi. Maybe it was an off day for the kitchen but we thought the mahi had no flavor. Fish was cooked just right but didn't have any seasoning on it. Mac nut crust could have been crispier too. The slaw was very wasabi heavy which overpowered everything. The shrimp weren't house made - they looked and tasted like frozen ones you get at the store. This is not on my list of recommendations. read more

$2 off coconut shrimp coupon on yelp Had the coconut shrimp and macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi. The mahi was too sweet for me and was lacking the macadamia nut crust, felt more like a breadcrumb than nut. The mango sauce was good but again a bit sweet. Coconut shrimp were temperature hot and fresh but just ok. I didn't care for the wasabi/mayo coleslaw they served on the side (more like half of plate) Super friendly service. You order inside and we snagged a table outside in the shade. Self serve utensils, napkins, hot sauces etc. Tables were clean and the staff busses your table when you leave. Overall it was fine but I didn't think it's worth the hype. 3.5 stars for me but rounding up. read more

I just grabbed a quick coconut shrimp to go. The staff was friendly. I assumed, based on the reviews and pictures, that it came with fries, and I didn't realize it didn't until I was headed home. The assumption was reinforced by the price--$13 for just coconut shrimp with no side seems steep. The quality was fine, but I'm not sure it was much, if any, better than frozen coconut shrimp in my air fryer. A good but of seating, inside and out. read more

The food and place is great but compared to the hype of articles online, it was a bit expensive and not necessarily a must-go. Food (5/5): Ordered the coconut shrimp and chips and the fish tacos. Some friends of mine got the seafood chowder and and the local style grilled Ono plate. All the dishes were pretty good! The coconut shrimp and chips was the right amount of crispy and the fish tacos tasted fresh. The only thing is that the coleslaw wasn't the tastiest and the taco ingredients should've been split across three taco shells since the ingredients spilled out. Service (4/5): You order at the stand before you can sit down. They'll bring the order over to your table and you can get water on your own. The food came out moderately fast at around 10 minutes. Ambiance (4/5): There's surfboard seats and tables in a chill spacious environment with high ceilings. There didn't appear to be a restroom in the restaurant. Overall seemed to be a nice place. read more

(Late review from September - October 2022) Certainly not the BEST fish taco I've tried but certainly up there. They're incredibly filling and they are served à la carte. Our first visit was definitely our only visit. We went because a friend told us Coconut's has a laid back vibe. I can't say that I agree with that. It felt pretty sterile imho. After ordering food at the counter I was looking at the beers and was told that they were "out of every beer but the golden ale and a few of the wines". I went ahead and ordered the golden ale and was told they would deliver it to the table. When our food arrived I mentioned that I never got the beer and the server went to get it. Not sure if that threw the server off their game, but we had to go get our own napkins and silverware after that too. Food seemed like standard fare we could have gotten in a hundred other places. Also, they were doing orientation for 3 new employees while we were there. On a Saturday. In the middle of lunchtime. read more

I don't like fish but I noticed they had a lot of other options so we went. Speaking with the man at the register (possibly the owner?) he recommended the steak tacos if fish isn't your thing. Yum! Famous for fish tacos so we had to try them! The fish tacos were different than any kind we've had before. I think what made it such a great taco was the combination of really fresh fish and a delicious creamy sauce from the coleslaw. You can even get the salsa and mango and coleslaw topping on the side to add onto the taco if you prefer. Unfortunately, they do charge a one dollar fee for the boxes to take it to go. And the tacos are bit pricey because they run about $20 for two but, we shared it along with some appetizers. My parents loved the calamari appetizer and said it was really fresh. Coconut Shrimp was really fresh and good too! read more

Cute local chain with decent options. The car rental staff recommended Coconuts as our first meal on the island-- we must've looked hella touristy LOL. I'd been to the larger location in Kihei before and thought it was fine. Smaller than the other location. Located in a strip mall next to a local coffee joint. Inside seating is communal, with large picnic benches on each flank of the store. Staff are quick and friendly. Outside, chickens and roosters cawing everywhere GRILLED CHICKEN ON BROWN RICE: A little dry, grilled to a crisp; seasoning was alright. The tartar sauce somewhat made up for the lack of moisture. They overlooked the brown rice, came out a tad gummy. Salad is laughable-- pieces of lettuce topped with shredded cheese and a pale, watery tomato slice. The thousand island dressing lol. This is definitely catering to the middle America vacationer crowd My bf's fish tacos were more promising-- large portions and fresh fish for the price. I made the mistake of ordering a non-fish plate. His ahi poke was fresher than anything I'd had on the mainland-- though I wish they used fresh wasabi instead of paste. Overall, good for a quick bite, especially right after a 5 hour flight read more

We went nuts for Coconuts Fish Cafe! Taco 'bout a great deal for a meal! I love the surfboard tables and cool island vibe... They have a no mix and match taco policy. I'd let customers choose two and charge an "upcharge" if they'd like, what's the prob, brah? The tacos are packed with 17 ingredients including a homemade mango salsa and a crisp and tangy cole slaw! I had the chicken tacos and hubby chose the fish! So big I couldn't even finish my meal! They are the best on the island, brah! We were in taco heaven. They serve more than just tacos, but the tacos are their claim to fame! The staff was pretty friendly and the space was bright and clean. One thing that was inconvenient: Bathroom is around the building which you enter with a code. read more

We got into Maui 3 days ago. We landed at about 4:30. By the time we got our car, bags, etc. (plus the 4 hr. time difference from Texas), we quickly found the north location per YELP. We had 2 kids meals, 1 teriyaki chicken sandwich, one macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi and two fish taco order (2 tacos each), plus a started of the coconut shrimp. Everything was outstanding....especially the LOADED fish tacos - which we learned is kind of their "go-to" dish. No way you can gracefully eat them with your hands. Too big, too full of fresh goodness. The surprise of the whole meal was their cole slaw. It's made with coconut milk (of course!) and maybe some wasabi?? It's very unique and very good. The next night our kids were at a work event and we asked our grands where they wanted to eat...."that place we ate yesterday" was their unanimous choice! This time we went to the more southern location (I think...directions are difficult for me in Hawaii). It's larger and they serve beer and wine. I'd strongly recommend the Maui Brewing Co. lager. The food was just as good as it was at the previous store. The service at each store was courteous, prompt and attentive. If we lived here (who the heck can afford to live here!?!) we'd eat here every week. Aloha, y'all! read more

Too much fried food. Fried food kills the flavor. Pretty much just eating fried spices. Can't tell what kind of meat it is afterwards.
