We ordered the fish tacos, basket of fries, and the taco mountain with pork. All of it was delicious, great combo of flavors with salty and sweet, and huge portions. My fish tacos were massive, could have been 2 each, they were falling apart and hard to eat because they were so full, that was my only minor issue. The pork was cooked to flavorful perfection and the taco mountain was like a "bowl" of food with a rice base but on a plate. Fries were thin and salty and hot, reminded me of McDonalds fries. I believe this chain used to be in Kauai, so wee were excited . We would go to that one 5 time on that trip. But it's not the same as before. They used to have great happy hour but now it's not really much of a deal I think for shrimp. For the price you pay there are better choices now. Food was fine. This was our second visit to Coconuts in 2 years and yet again our very first meal in Maui after our all day ordeal to fly in from the mainland. We were pleasantly surprised that the cafe had transformed itself with a beautiful renovation inside and out. The vibe is ultra cute, modern and tropical. The staff was amazing - very welcoming and attentive. The food was so fresh and well presented - Coconuts certainly did not disappoint! We had the Grilled Mahi Mahi Salad, Grilled Mahi Mahi Plate and Mahi Mahi Fish and Chips. YES, when in Maui go for Mahi! The dishes were all freshly prepared and well presented. The flavors were so bright and refreshing, just awesome. Even with all the great food options in Maui I am tempted to go back very soon ... it was that good! We went to both locations! The north location is smaller and doesn't serve alcohol (but we were told we could BYOB). The south location is bigger and serves beer and wine. I had the fish tacos both times and they are FIRE! Highly recommend. The fresh ahi was thick and cooked perfectly, that is, RARE! You must say SEARED RARE, PLEASE or you'll get cooked tuna which is not smart IMHO. Don't gamble with that. Don't assume. Ask. No matter which one you visit, you'll have a great experience! Closing note to every chef on this planet: look at the picture of the ahi on my review here... if you serve ahi OTHER THAN this way, you should never be allowed to touch fresh fish again. Sad to say, I took my daughter here because we thought it sounded yummy and fun. It was neither. Spent $75 on 3 dishes, fish tacos, Ono salad and poke nachos. The only thing worth mentioning was the poke nachos. The host seemed upset that she had to work, that we ordered water instead of one of the drinks she rambled off and irritated that I needed a reminder of the salad dressings the restaurant offered. Every time we takeout food from here (all of four times when we visit Maui), we exclaim over how seriously so good the food is. The boys love the keiki meal options - fried or grilled fish with fries or brown rice. Husband loves their tacos... especially the mango salsa that top off the fresh and delicious tacos. We love the healthy option of ordering grilled fish over brown rice. And we love love the coconut shrimp! And prices are reasonable for such fresh seafood! Service is of course great. At the other Kihei location, we've enjoyed the most delicious fish tacos ever, and I expected the same quality. Walk up the stairs to the 2nd floor, scan the surfboard menu, then go inside and order at the desk. Put your order number on your table and it will be brought to you. There are tables available both inside and outside. My hubby and I've been trying to eat less and save money this trip, so we opted to share one order of Coconut Shrimp & Chips! My favorite part of this spot is the ambiance. Super cute lighting, surfboard tables and local art for sale on the walls. Service was fine, you order ahead. The server had a whole tourist shpiel for places to explore which we cute (and unnecessary). The fish and chips are a joke. They brought out maybe 1.5 ounces of heavily breaded fish on a humongous pile of fries -- the fries were salty and addictive, but we were all ready for some tasty crispy fish. Instead, there were two very sad limp pieces (barely 2 square inches and pounded paper thin) on top of all the fries (which were so obviously meant to be filler and cut seafood costs). When you bit into the fish you could barely see the actual meat. Coconut slaw, eh. Definitely disappointing for the price point and did not feel well the rest of the day. :/ read more
