Rating: 3.5/5 [take out] This food truck was at the ACL GA+ Lounge, so we decided to give it a try. We ordered the chicken pad Thai and egg rolls. The pad Thai had decent flavor, but the chicken was pretty dry and the portion size was on the smaller side. Definitely need the lime in my opinion. The egg rolls, on the other hand, were really good--crispy, warm, and flavorful. The order came with three vegetarian egg rolls which tasted better than expected. read more

This used to be my favorite Thai place to go, and I became very good friends with the owners who were Thai. Then Covid came so a lot of things changed and I actually hadn't been back in about four years believe it or not. My how time passes. So the other night after a really good swim at the nearby Y, I'm scrolling through yelp pics and was like oh yeah it's cold outside and some really nice and warm green. Curry would be perfect and headed over to coat and Thai. Well, things have changed, there's nobody Thai making the food and I believe they told me the owners remain the same, but have trained them to run this for the past two years. I was a bit skeptical, but put an order in to give him a try. They were very nice. So the verdict is like most places that change hands or have different team running it is that it it's just not as good as it used to be. So it wasn't bad, but some noticeable things were the portions were reduced, whereas previously I would get an abundance of veggies that I believe refresh cut, and I sometimes would be really full eating the green curry. This time around the veggies seem to be Juliene and could be frozen from a bag, but I hardly got any in there and what sucks is that that's just literally.pennies by giving me an extra half scoop. The chicken is smaller and seems to be more chopped up, but I didn't get that much chicken either it was scarce. So in the end, I eat the whole thing and believe or not I was still kind of hungry, which is very unusual because we're talking in five or six years later and my appetite has shrunk. The other noticeable difference is the broth is a little more milky now and slightly less basil flavor. It still tasted pretty good but the old way just was much better. The owner there he would always cook my green curry and every dish that I ordered there because he and his sister were always there, and I consistently got the same great quality and quantity with each dish. Repeatable and reproducible and consistent. Now that is gone and that's why I can't say they're the best green curry anymore unfortunately Will I be back? I don't really know. I mean, if you're the best green curry in town like they used to be there was no questions asked when wanting Thai food I would always go to their trailer no matter what because I knew it was good and they were always consistent. When you're in the middle of the pack, well, it makes it much more difficult for me to stick with them on a consistent basis as I'll be open to trying other options as I'm sure we all do read more

Tried Coat and Thai and ordered the Pad See Ew. It's your typical casual food truck. The flavor was good, but the chicken came out a little dry. The staff were friendly, which I appreciated! They don't accept tap to pay, so make sure to bring a card or cash. While I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back, it's a convenient option if I'm in the area having drinks and want a quick bite. read more

In the food truck park near Zilker and Barton Springs, conveniently located if you want to keep the spirit of a picnic-style type of day. Please note this rating is for food trucks, and not to be compared to restaurant ratings. So, service is minimal and a smile goes a long way and the ambiance is usually outdoors. Coat and Thai was rated Top 10 Best Thai by City Search in 2011-2012, and I don't disagree. Good portions, and interestingly served. Ordered the chicken Pad Thai, so it can either be good, really good, or a total fail. Fairly simple dish, yea? This was indeed good. What I appreciated most about this dish is that it wasn't overwhelmed with sauce and had a decent amount of chicken. It was missing egg and some greens, like other restaurants may do, but overall it was a solid dish and accessible by a food truck. FYI anyone in a tree has access to the bathroom key! read more

An underwhelming experience. I originally ordered a Pad Kee Mao with Chicken, but they said they didn't have chicken. So I ordered it with Shrimp. Unfortunately, ~10 mins later, they said they didn't have the sauce for the Pad Kee Mao and that I would have to choose from a few specific items. I ended up choosing the Pad Prik Pao with Shrimp. While it did not taste bad, it ended up tasting more Chinese than Thai... read more

The Picnic - the food court on Barton Springs Road near Zilker Park - is has a lot of very standard food trucks. I assume rents are high - and the truck owners compensate by going for "highly popular items" that can give them the volume they need. Coat and Thai is no exception. Coat and Thai has a very you've-seen-this-before American Thai menu. But ... Execution can be interesting and surprising. They do a Chicken Pineapple Rice that legitimately impresses. What's the deal? Thai spices in the rice. Not enough to be firey. But enough to give nontrivial flavor. This does NOT taste like the same old fried rice you have had a million times elsewhere. Add the fact they use high quality chicken and they put a nice char on that chicken ... And you are now talking an interesting dish. I also did a not-at-all-Thai-just-for-the-Americans Crab Rangoon. It was what it says on the menu. No more. No less. But that fried rice suggests the rest of Coat and Thai's "standard" menu could have some life to it. Further research is clearly needed ... read more

Had just left watching the bats on Congress bridge when we felt kind of hungry. Stopped in at The Picnic food truck park. A lot of the food trucks were already closed. Just a couple open. I got Pad Thai at Coat & Thai. Really hit the spot. I didn't think I was that hungry, but once I started, I was inhaling it. Noodles are cooked perfectly, very tasty. Lots of flavor. They gave a lot of crushed peanuts on the side. And a juicy lime wedge. The noodles them self were wrapped in foil to keep warm. I got some napkins and chop sticks at their food truck stand. The park itself is pretty big. The trucks are in an outer circle around the picnic tables. It's mostly covered. It's in the dirt, so don't wear your bright white shoes. Had a great view of the full moon. Which was wonderful. Food was delicious and the service was friendly. read more

This is a great food trailer on Barton Springs. The portions are really generous and the food was really fresh and delicious. I really loved the egg rolls and the pas Thai. service was friendly and quick and it's part of a larger food trailer park with lots of seating and lots of options. read more

We ordered Pad Ka Pao and it came out extremely salty - way too much soy sauce. And the eggrolls were skinny with almost nothing inside of them. Not to mention they couldn't even bother with a homemade sauce. Instead they gave packets of "duck sauce" which were based in corn syrup. There are SO much better Thai food trucks in Austin. read more

order- pad garlic To be honest, I thought I ordered noodles lol but this dish turned out to be super good. It's stir fry with Thai black pepper, garlic, sweet soy sauce, Thai seasoning, steamed veggies, white rice, and chicken. The veggies and chicken had a lot of sauce so when I combined the rice with it, the sauce got soaked up so beautifully I don't know why, but I usually don't like it when broccoli is covered in sauce but for some reason this soy-Thai-seasoning broth it was in was delicious read more

This truck is a regular at this food park/station or whatever you call it. Someone said it's a long wait but worth it so had to check it out for myself. Ordered the eggrolls and a pad see ew. Then I waited for about 20 minutes. After wondering if it would be worth the wait, my order was ready and I dove in. After the first few bites of the pad see ew, I understand why the wait is as they make every order from scratch which explains the freshness and authenticity of the noodles, veggies, egg, and tofu. One of the better pad see ew's I've tasted. The eggrolls weren't that spectacular but had a nice crunch and paired well with their sweet and spicy dipping sauce. Next time I'm here I'll be doing that Thai Basil fried rice. Saw someone order it and after the first bite, made a face that looked like someone was giving him an inappropriate yet pleasurable feeling related to adult situations. With that said, I'll end this review and see myself out. read more

Pretty good pad Thai! The noodles were a bit too thin for my preference, but the taste was great. I don't think I would get the shrimp again, probably chicken instead. Didn't wait long, but felt the portion size was small for what I paid compared to other Thai restaurants I've been to. read more

We love this food truck at the picnic on Barton springs! Perfect for after a day at zilker or an afternoon at the springs. They have all standard Thai menu items you'd expect but the Pad Thai, Yellow Curry & Pad See Ew are our favorites. The flavor in the yellow curry is out of this world! They offer vegetarian options as well. Situated right by a big parking lot with plenty of space to roll up and drop by. Picnic tables all over with fans and a covered area but I will say during the summer it gets hot! Best to order take out during the hot months. And if you're not a fan of spice be sure to mention it! I love spice but if you're not a spice person some of the dishes can get a little hot. read more

I stopped in to grab some food to eat during the Zilker outdoor musical, and they were glad to provide. I got an array of the pad Thai, the green curry, and pineapple fried rice. I appreciate that they had a couple options available to people avoiding gluten, and can confirm that I did not have any negative reaction to my meal. Otherwise, by taste everything hit the spot and I have no negatives stood out. Solid standard Thai option. read more

Sorry to say, taste is nothing like a Thai food. Too much source. (Oyster source!?) Spring roll was just like a frozen food, heat up by oil. May be location cost too much and owner forgot about real Thai food experience!? read more

Cute food truck and good service. But definitely not the best pad kee mao I have ever tasted - to be honest it didn't even taste like pad kee mao. It wasn't very spicy and the flavor profile wasn't there. The only thing that resembled the real dish was the basil. The tofu was pretty good - not your average fried tofu, this one was light and airy. I would not recommend this place if you are looking for something authentically thai though. read more

I was looking for another Thai food truck for lunch when I passed this food truck park and decided to try them despite the overall mediocre reviews. I have had my share of thai food and I can give pause to perhaps the idea it's coming from a food truck, but their Pad See Ew with chicken was barely passable as good. It was almost like it was reheated leftovers. The noodles were dark, but bland. The chicken was extremely dry and firm, like they have been reheated or microwaved too long. Overall, the food truck area was nice with park benches and onsite restrooms so I will give another truck a chance, but not this one. Don't waste your money or your tastebuds with them. read more

What happened to Coat and Thai??Food is no longer edible. We started going to the original Coat and Thai when it was in East Austin over 10 years ago and followed the owners to the Barton Springs location. They were the nicest people who would bring small gifts back from Thailand for their customers and the food was great. They sold a few years ago and the food changed a bit but was still pretty good. Not quite the original but good enough. Not sure if it has been sold again? Are they even Thai? Food was terrible and all items had a weird or bad taste. Almost like they don't have experience withThai food or know how to use fish sauce properly. Even the egg rolls tasted off, kind of thick, and with a strange aftertaste. So bummed as it is a drive to get there and no longer good at all. Hate to see this happen. Won't be returning sadly. read more

G.O.A.T of Pad See Ew "only thing I've tried that I love" from their menu and it's the best I've had from any Thai food place. Other than egg rolls. I liked the garlic chicken. Had a good mix of savory and sweet. The fried rice was a little runny/watery but the flavor was great! Would come back here because it's outdoor and I could bring my dog here. They also have other surrounding food trucks. This place is perfect for a casual hang out with your friends or quick meet up. Pretty forgettable thai truck. I love the name tho. Value is okay. The advantage is that they were open later than the other trucks in the food park. Crab Rangoon - pretty cream cheese heavy not a lot of crab. Pretty stingy in filling in general. That being said its deep fried cream cheese with crab Pad See Ew definitely overcoojed chicken and noodles. A little bit dry. If it wasn't overcooked it would be good tho. Good portion size. Took about 15-20 minutes. To get the meal. They were pretty busy. I'd be curious to come back when they had less customers. I suspect the quality would increase In terms of details, entrees will set you back 9 dollars for a decent portion. Sides will set you back 4. read more

There are lots of yummy thai eateries in ATX, however this particular one is a food truck located at a food truck park called "the picnic" on barton springs rd., just down the street from zilker park/barton springs. So many tasty options are on the menu. My faves are pad ka pao, pad see ew, pad prik pao, pad kee mao, pad thai, basil fried rice & pineapple fried rice. You can add chicken, shrimp or tofu to your dish. They offer vegan/vegetarian and gluten free items, too! All their entrees are large enough to split with another person, and for $12 or less per plate. I also recommend their thai iced tea & iced coffee. I love to ride my bike there and take yummy food to the park. You can also, eat at the food truck park - there is plenty of covered seating & two large-ass ceiling fans...plus two bathrooms. Part of the Picnic food truck park - it doesn't necessarily grab you as you stroll past because there are so many other options. A+ for the cutest name in the joint. However - I highly recommend! Coat and Thai is two of my favorite things - consistent and delicious. You can always guarantee you'll get the same kick ass quality every time you go. I always get the yellow curry and sub for more vegetables and wow - so good. Also, vegetarian curry? You're making my heart swoon. They're reasonably priced, friendly, consistent and I come back for more (at least once a month). So if you're scrolling through reviews looking for some yummy Thai because you're in the area (visiting or local) I'd say 1000% come here. read more
