On our way to Maine to visit relatives, my companion and I thought a stopover in the peaceful seaside village of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, with dinner at the famous Ocean House, might be the perfect start to our extended weekend. While the hotel offers several dining possibilities, there is no question in my mind that Coast is their culinary chef d'oeuvre. My dining partner and I found their New England-inspired cuisine to be not only beautifully presented but also absolutely delicious. Throw in an award-winning wine list, friendly & personable service, picturesque view of the Atlantic Ocean, and a most satisfying evening at table awaits. Be advised, however... What also awaits is a pretty hefty hit on your pocketbook, as our five-course prix-fixe Degustation Menu - with several choices included - was priced at $145.00 per person, plus beverages, tax & gratuity (there is also a similarly priced vegetarian menu). If you want to add the Reserve Wine Pairing, which I did, that will cost you an additional $125.00 per person (Grand Wine Pairing an additional $250.00 per person). Definitely not what you would call a cheap date. That being said, however, in my opinion - and that of my companion as well - dinner here is well worth the expenditure. Our first course was the Ninigret Pond Oyster "Pan Roast." Sourced from a local coastal lagoon that is linked to the Atlantic Ocean and Block Island Sound, Ninigret Pond is home to several reliable oyster purveyors. I must confess that I have never been an enthusiastic fan of bivalves in general - and raw oysters in particular. However, the pan-roasted representatives sampled here, smooth & buttery with a touch of sweetness and sprinkled with Royal Belgian Osetra Caviar, were quite good indeed. And the Ruinart Singulier 18th Edition, Blanc de Blancs, Brut Nature, Champagne, (France), proved to be the perfect libationary accompaniment. But even better was the outrageously delicious Bluefin Tuna Tartare. I have tasted this dish on numerous occasions; however, this particular incarnation was in a class all by itself. Gently caressed by avocado and kissed by golden kiwi and a beguiling carrot ginger reduction, the result was a presentation that was pleasing to both eye and palate, and a highlight of our evening. The 2019 Tegernseerhof Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd Wachau (Austria), of course, added immensely to the enjoyment. The next course presented us with a rather interesting conundrum... the choice between two equally appetizing possibilities. My dining companion, of course, went immediately for the Seared Scallops & Foie Gras. I, on the other hand, decided to side entirely with the carnivores... Kuro Farms Wagyu Strip Loin. Companioned by short rib, confit carrot, and Sicilian pistachios, this was a winner all the way... as was the wine selection, the 2020 Aslina "Umsasane," an enticing blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot from Stellenbosch, South Africa. The dessert course was especially noteworthy, a Blackberry Sudachi Entremet aided and abetted by white chocolate mousse, lavender, and raw honey sponge. A rather unusual denouement, I must admit, but a lovely presentation and irresistibly scrumptious. And, once again, the wine selection - 2018 Domaine Huet Le Mont Moelleux, a Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, Touraine, in France's Loire Valley - was right on the money. The Bottom Line: An exceptionally fine dining experience. Pricey, to be sure... but, in my opinion, worth every penny. A restaurant to which my dining companion and I would gladly return. Coast Fails. Coast no longer is the exquisite dining experience we have enjoyed for many years. It is now overpriced, forced, and mediocre. We started by selecting the 7 course ($245 pp) menu which promised to be a culinary delight chosen by the chef. The first 3 courses were from the cold appetizer menu - they were served all at once (rushed), and had a vinegary, distasteful flavor. We then had 2 courses from the hot appetizer menu - one was 2 small potato buttons (again, with a vinegary flavor) and the other, a piece of very good lobster (served separately which was better). We then had 1 item from the entree menu (wagyu beef) - small, fatty but flavorful, and virtually no sauce and 2 Barbie-size asparagus heads. The dessert was a flavorless jelled chocolate ring - with a dab of forgettable ice cream. We have always been delighted with the extraordinary surprises from the kitchen - this time, it was a total disappointment in every way - presentation, flavor, and portion size. The servers were confused (failing to bring cocktails & wine on time). The bread was the best part but don't ask for more (it's rationed 2 per person)! Their once fun "per dish" wine pairing is reduced to "per course" and not worth it (3 glasses). Additionally, the room location has changed. No longer do you have the refined and ocean-forward experience, now only some guests MAY see some water. Our table was adjacent to their other restaurant, with a curtain separating us and the noise level was not acceptable (we even had difficulty understanding our servers). There was virtually no recognition of a birthday celebration at our table (there's always been something "special" for the guest of honor). The little confections for all were a nice touch, but lackluster. For 5 of us (7 courses each, total of 4 cocktails, and tip) it was $1800.00. We left sad, disenchanted, and hungry (not like the old Coast). We won't be back unfortunately, and don't recommend it to anyone - many better options. read more

This was the most fantastic dining experience I have ever had, in my entire life! Now, I know why this is a 5 Star Michelin restaurant! The entire resort is gorgeous and very luxurious. Coast Restaurant is The Best, ever! We had a beautiful window seat, facing the ocean. It was wonderful to be in a restaurant without a lot of noise and to be able to hear each other, as we chatted over dinner. The restaurant manager was lovely and attentive. Our waiter: Bayron Dias was the absolute Best! Well-groomed and dressed to perfection; beautiful smile and perfect manners; answered all our questions, expertly; was extremely attentive throughout the evening and was tremendously charming! The 5 course meal was presented as works of art - so beautiful and just as delicious! The final touch of Happy Birthday, written in chocolate, on my dessert dish, was the perfect ending to our meal and evening, along with a most delicious and large cup of cappuccino! My college besties and I do an annual trip every summer to the champagne jazz brunch. Once again another fabulous brunch. I had a lovely Bellini! (Unlimited!!!) They will even replenish your seafood tower if you ask. They have added a crepe station to the brunch. I loved the strawberry and whip cream crepe. I do wish the dessert game could be a little better. I would love to have cookies or fruit tart or something else that's better. The service is first class. Everyone is so kind and accommodating. I came here for dinner last Wednesday with my family and it was amazing! We went on the last night of our stay, and throughout our visit everyone kept highlighting how amazing Coast would be, and I have to say it did live up to the expectation. The meal starts with a choice between a set menu with meat/seafood or a vegetarian option. We each chose the meat/seafood option. Every course was amazing, but the lobster course was exceptional and such a huge portion I was surprised at how much lobster they gave. This was a really special experience, and I loved that the staff was so friendly and attentive during the stay and gave us a special course of dessert to go with special menus to remember our visit. This is my second meal here. Tonight was room service though. Presentation was very nice. Had the half chicken entree. There was a spoon of soup as a teaser... forgot the name but it seemed to have a tomato base with diced shrimp on it. Served cold. Very flavorful. The entree was nicely sized. The chicken was a tad undercooked deep inside the leg. Otherwise very good flavor. Laid on a bed of crisp green beans and mashed potatoes. The gravy was perfect. Nice basket of four rolls. Desert was a chocolate cheese cake with raspberries. Berries too tart and seedy for my liking. Cheesecake was just okay. The service here is beyond fantastic. Previous experience was a lunch in the dining room off season. The service was great and it was hands down one of the nicest burgers I have had. My wife had the lobster roll and loved it. ok so we've tried several times to love this place but tonight was just terrible. sat at the bar and ordered a bottle of wine. the bartender brought over the wine list to have me point to the bottle on the menu. i told him the name at least 10 times! 30 minutes... yes 30 min later they open a bottle of wine and ask if that's the right one...i look at him and say is it "santa margarita?" it was not. i mean this is only a $60 bottle maybe they were messing with us. then 30 min later the sommelier comes with the correct bottle and says "before i open this one is it the correct one?". i let him know i said the name at least 10 times!!! we had an app and had to ask for silverware and also remind the bartender that our food was sitting at the pickup area. also had to ask for napkins!! so now we see ready go, we ask for our car. 30 min later im asking where the heck my car is as no one is waiting. they brought up the wrong car 3x !! for a 5 star place they really need to get their act together. i'm so done with this place!! read more

The meal I had at COAST was one of the best meals I've had anywhere. They offer a 5-course pre-fixe menu that changes daily based on what is in season. We learned that almost all of the ingredients are sourced from within 150 miles of the restaurant. Our meal started with a tiny tray of canapés. Sadly, I don't remember exactly what they were but I liked one of them more than the other. The first course was an incredibly fresh oyster with cucumber, salmon roe and finger lime. The second course was a sea scallop, beautifully presented on its shell, with uni, corn and radish. The olive oil poached halibut in the third course literally melted in your mouth like butter. I tried the duck in the fourth course, which was my favorite of the night. And for dessert, a chocolate soufflé with a flavorful cranberry sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. Each course was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was top notch. Our waiter was genuinely warm and enthusiastic. He kept telling us it was his pleasure to serve us and we really believed he meant it. The meal was expensive - $205 per person for the pre-fixe meal. My wife and I were treated to the tasting menu "Chefs Counter Experience " at Coast. Coast just opened in July of '17 and we thought they may still be ironing out the wrinkles being so new. Nothing to worry about though. Coast is ready for anything and anybody! I believe most all ingredients in our journey are sourced locally within 50 miles. Whether it's the smoked salt from Nantucket, fresh Ribeye from a local farm or a local harvest blonde oyster, red shrimp or native Halibut. It ALL tasted as if it were brought to Coast that morning. Our first course was a refreshing blonde oyster with icy/chilled lemon, anise, peppercorn accompanying the oyster. The combo of citrus, sea and a little tomato jus was lively. The rabbit smoked loin and terrine were so flavorful, they didn't even need the house made mustard or berry. Next was a Stonington scallop and red shrimp. Again while tasting the shrimp and scallop with its ginger dashi one understands how incredibly fresh the ingredients are. The shrimps tail tasted better than most lobster if ever eaten. The halibut came with a grapefruit/saffron sauce. Both the grapefruit and saffron were subtle and never overtook the dish which of course featured a generous portion of halibut. Keep in mind that the local produce accompanying the seafood or ribeye with black garlic jus aren't a side. Vegetables and micro greens carefully highlight but certainly don't hide from the main dish. If needed chefs employ tweezers to give a perfect presentation. We ended our meal with a unique Peach Melba. Summer peach with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. Candied almonds gave a welcomed crunch to the perfect peach and silky vanilla ice cream. The combination was a soothing ending to a meal that rivals ANYTHING, ANYWHERE. Service was friendly and informative. To us the Chefs Experience includes the staff. The open kitchen was crazy busy on a filled to capacity Saturday night. There was a sense of a serious desire to make every course perfect for every guest. My wife and I knowing our way around a kitchen could easily sense commitment and professionalism from everyone from servers to chefs and everyone in between. Slices of black truffle for my ribeye? A chef was there to provide. Question about an ingredient or flavor? Someone engaged with its rationale. Experience Coast. My wife and I dined tonight at COAST for the final meal of our honeymoon and both agreed that it may be THE best meal we've ever had. We enjoyed the 5 course prix fixe (+cheese pairing). The evening started with very fresh oysters done two ways (fresh saltwater and strawberry/lime/citrus tea). Next was incredibly creamy and well balanced foie gras. The poached halibut was possibly the best preparation of fish I've ever had (poached in olive oil at 125 degrees for 20mins). As someone who sous vides I'm immediately determined to figure out how they did it. The mains of strip loin and the pork tasting were very flavorful. Finally the mocha soufflé was perfectly cooked and paired perfectly with a vanilla anglaise. Importantly, the service from start to finish was wonderful. This is a price fixed 4 course meal. I cannot believe this was rated highly. Big waste of money. They use the back porch of the Bistro, which is dated. It feels like eating on your back porch. The dress code is collared shirts for men, jackets preferred and women cocktail attire. There are 10 tables. My husband and sons were in collared shirts and jackets. Not none other man was in a jacket. Collared shirts ranged from polo, to vineyard vines. A woman was in a collared shirt and khaki pants, several in jersey type dresses. Now the menu. I had the vegetarian and the rest had the meat.Every portion we were given was about a 2 inch circle and the meat was about 2 ounces. The vegetarian started with an heirloom tartare. It was tiny round of minced tomatoes and no flavor. The mushroom scallops were about 5 tiny mushrooms the size of my pinky nail in a broth. No flavor. King oyster mushroom was medium size cap. Last course was some vegetables with black truffle. Nothing special. If you wanted the cheese plate it was $25 extra. The meat and fish menu started with an oyster with roe, a clam with an herb sauce and muscle with basil aioli. Was ok. The bluefin tuna sashimi they felt was the only course they really liked. The dover sole was maybe a 1/2 inch piece that tasted like butter. The 4th course was lamb tenderloin or wagu loin for an extra $65! The lamb tenderloin was about 2 ounces. The wagu was about 2 ounces! There was absolutely no flavor and nothing special about any of the courses. They should be embarrassed over the tiny portions. We have had many price fixed meals and the portions we received for 4 courses are the size we had with an 8 course meal. The desert was either a pot de cream or pistachio soufflé. The soufflé was actually good. The pot du creme was very rich and ok. The waiter said he would add black truffle to the "3rd course" and we were not aware that cost $35 a piece. The meal with 1/2 bottle wine, bottled water and one drink cost $1210! For an unforgettable meal. Absolutely throwing money in the toilet. We ended up getting pizza after we left. read more

This review is long overdue. My fiancé and I came here to celebrate our birthdays and had one of the preset menus that paired each course with a glass of wine. The wine pairings were excellent and very well thought through. The flavors of each course were so rich, and each bite was like a little party in your mouth. Our favorite was DEFINITELY the oxtail ravioli and the dessert, but honestly, we were treated like royalty the whole evening. If you were to ask me to name my most surprisingly excellent meal in this past year of many memorable meals, I'd easily say COAST. I suspected COAST was going to be good, but I was not expecting it would be among the top 5 dégustations I had in 2017. COAST is a new fine dining restaurant located inside the iconic Ocean House seaside resort in Rhode Island's southernmost community -- the "old money" summer colony of Watch Hill. Like the community around it, COAST is restrained in its projection of opulence, preferring a quiet and sensible splendor to a louder, self-indulgent ambience. So too would I describe the reticent grace of my waitress, Stephanie, my dependable guide through an unforgettable evening of eating and drinking. As for the food, my 6-course fall prix fixe menu at COAST featured the following dishes: * East Beach Blonde Oyster: pear, ginger, lime, peppercorn * Nantucket Bay Scallop: ceviche, citrus marinade, crisp garden vegetables * Atlantic Monkfish: heirloom bean ragout, grilled pancetta, red beet glace, shaved white truffles from Alba * Hopkins Farm Lamb: slow-cooked roulade, fennel, braised red cabbage, rutabaga * New England Artisanal Cheese Plate * Gingerbread Soufflé: caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream The meal began with two canapés (tofu with maple glazed pear & radish, warm kale salad in crispy pasta bowl) and concluded with a petit fours assortment of candies. A bag 'o granola was provided to take home. I ordered pairings, which ranged from traditional wine pairings to a vodka from local company KEEL (paired with the oyster) and a nutty tawny port from W&J Graham (paired with the cheeses). Total damage for this meal included the tasting menu for one ($105), wine pairings for one ($80), optional cheese course ($25), and optional truffles ($65) for a total of $275 before taxes (8% total) and tips. The clear highlight was the magnificent Atlantic Monkfish, which was covered with shaved Alba white truffles. Aside from the perfectly-cooked monkfish sauteéd in shallot butter, I consumed a plethora of powerful flavors and contrasting textures off my plate, including crispy pancetta, rich creamy beans, tart red beet sauce, and musky truffles, all perfectly balanced but diverse such that each successive forkful competed with the previous one for the best thing I tasted that day. My two "raw" plates were also outstanding -- I was delighted by the cleanness and clarity of flavor from the oyster liquor in the East Beach Blonde Oyster, and I was similarly pleased with the Nantucket Bay Scallop ceviche, featuring supple slices of local scallop in a tart golden pool that transformed into a tantalizing "leche de tigre" as I ate it. My experience at the Chef's counter allowed me a kitchen-side seat to observe the culinary magicians at COAST work their craft. Since it was not very busy on the December evening I attended COAST, I was able to engage with Kyle in the kitchen, a friendly cook who indulged me with excellent explanations as to what was going on, where ingredients were sourced from, local dining scene gossip, and all topics epicurean in general. I loved the enthusiasm that Kyle had for his work -- for example, his excitement about the rutabega purée used with the lamb dish (and for good reason -- it was dank!) and the process they use to make the ceviche. I had the opportunity to witness the level of care and detail that goes into creating these high-end dishes close-up, from Kyle tilting his pan almost vertically and rapidly butter-basting my monkfish in what he calls "angry butter" to Chef Backman herself finishing the dish by delicately and precisely placing shaved Italian truffles on it. As someone who has dined at 6 of the 40 Forbes "5 Star" restaurants in the U.S. this past year, I can say affirmatively that COAST absolutely belongs on that exclusive list of the country's best fine dining enterprises. I look forward to visiting COAST as the seasons turn so I can more fully experience this kitchen's ever-changing menu. NOTE: Please be warned that Uber and Lyft rideshares are not widely operated in the Watch Hill area. I ended up getting a very costly cab back to Providence, which COAST's maître d' helped me with. I've dined at some of the finest hotels in the world in 28 countries and have a good sense on what a 5-star experience should be. We spent $500+ on dinner for two with my wife for our anniversary at Coast in the Ocean House hotel. Service and ambiance fantastic, very well trained staff -- five stars for that. But the prix fix multi-course menu not so much -- the two star rating on this review is for the Chef. The food was trying too hard -- too much focus on presentation with infinitesimally small portions that looked nice on the plate, but was generally uninspired and only tasted "good" and not great. We ordered the duck and the steak as our mains (well, we had no choice, that's all there was on the menu). The "duck breast" was the size of my finger (this is not an exaggeration), and the steak maybe the size of a fifty cent piece. You never even get a chance to know the dish before it's already gone in three bites. I've never had a 5 course meal where I left this hungry. If you want to have a great meal at Ocean House, go to Bistro or eat on the Veranda for better food at a lower price. Coast is a pass -- don't do it! read more

Started with some small bites tha included Ossetra Caviar with potatoes seaweed and radish, Stonington Scallop with uni and sunchoke, and a velvety Foie Gras Terrine. We move from there to a beautiful EVOO poached Halibit, Wague beef cheek and lamb duo of loin and neck. The lamb neck was the star of the evening for me and might be the best thing I have eaten in recent memory simple melting your mouth. As we wound down we had a lovely bree with honeycomb and quince, and ended with an assortment of chocolates and bon bons. Short form version for those who want to cut to the chase - Very classy, upmarket, stunning service, outstanding 5 star food, beautiful ambiance. Awesome, fabulous, highlight of this area, etc., etc. Now for why... There are many facets to a dining experience at Coast that go far beyond simply sitting down on a Saturday night and having a meal. Let's begin at the beginning. The drive into the area is quite beautiful and pulling up to the small driveway of the Hotel itself to be greeted by a pair of very smartly dressed and professional Valets, certainly starts the evening off well. The parking lot is directly across the road but valet service is always better I feel. To be told that there was no tipping as "the only payment we want is your presence" was very refreshing in this day of grabbing whatever you can. The hotel is a breath of fresh air to a bygone era of large mansions and treating guests as just that - guests rather than paying customers. As we were a little early, we were greeted and directed to the bar with the promise that they would come and get us at the appropriate time (which they). We explored a few inspired cocktails from Amy's creativity. Every staff member we saw or interacted with was immaculately dress and appeared to have a permanent smile on their face and was ultimately professional and truly dedicated to service. One of the most telling moments that should be highlighted and recognized is a brief moment watching the activities in the Kitchen (open and very visible from the bar). A chef was concentrating on placing individuals components on a plate with great care, using chopsticks. What he did next was telling - he spent at least a minute making sure the next plate was clean, holding it up to the light and polishing away with a very clean towel. Only when he was satisfied, did he plate the dish. Wow! It is sometimes the hidden things that are the most important to see. The seating for dinner looked directly out over the water, the ambiance was muted, with just a hint of background music and the tables impeccably dressed. Great start to set the correct scene for a culinary masterpiece. The Food was 5-star - from a Black Pepper Tagliatelle (with a 'to die for' smoked pork bouillon), to roast breast of duck that was so tender and full of flavor, to a Risotto that was perfectly al-dente with widely range or complex flavors. Throw in a Vacherin and a exquisitely presented Souffle and you have the perfect desserts to end. Delicate flavors throughout, very fresh ingredients, meals cooked to perfection (and I do mean that), very stylish plating and so many little touches that made the culinary experience so much more than ever hoped for. The wine list was extensive and we experimented with a Slovakian Riesling (stunning). I think next time a wine pairing would be nice. From the serving staff -I really do have to highlight two people - Kevin our very knowledgeable and personable Sommelier, and Jillian who was always there with an enormous smile and a real dedication to service. Ask for them by name if you are at Coast; in fact demand to have them as part of your dining experience. To find a truly gastronomic experience and old world service is rare in this area. You do pay for it but you can't begrudge the price of this kind of quality - definitely worth every penny. Now I have found it, I will be back time after time after time. read more

Couldn't agree more with Mark A's review of a few days ago. Ate at Coast celebrating our wedding anniversary last night and quite disappointed. A very misguided approach to exclusivity. The chef should spend a little more time in New York City at establishments such as Le Bernardin to see how it's done. read more

I stayed at the Ocean House for a long weekend and was able to experience this restaurant for a "Jazz Brunch" and for the dinner tasting experience. The tasting was very good however it felt a little uninspired. The waiter for both meals was clumsy. For example, timing was way off. We did the wine pairing and our drink for the next item would come out while we were eating our current item. It should have been timed to come out simultaneously with the next dish. For the jazz brunch, my waiter messed up my order. Additionally, he checked in too often and took too long to get us our mimosas. Lastly, if you're going to market it as a jazz brunch don't have the band out in the lobby. It should be in the restaurant possibly in the area to the right when you walk in. read more

What an amazing night. We have been there before for brunch but on this day I went to propose to my gf. She said yes and we had an amazing dinner. Coast, as always, provided 5 star service. The floor sommelier was fantastic and wrote us a really nice letter filled with wine recommendations. The 5 course dinner was all had beautiful presentation, was delicious, and interesting. Let me start by saying the service and ambiance at the Ocean House is five star. We have been coming here for years and that has always been consistent. The view is second to none. The staff is attentive, friendly and professional. Last night we came for dinner and introduced the Ocean House to some friends. Sadly, none of us will be back anytime soon. I am giving three stars because overall our experience was okay. It started off great! The staff was kind enough to let some of us mix and match the savory and vegetarian menus. The timing/pacing of courses was great. However, the meal simply did not deliver the superb dining experience we had hoped to have(and had in the past.) Last night was the first time I left food on my plate and not because I was full. Parts of the meal, from the amuse-bouche to the dessert, were terrible. The plates came out, the presentation was amazing but the flavors were poorly composed, and the quality of some of the ingredients was not what you would hope for (and what we have experienced in the past.) There were some standouts. The duck course was superb. And the first course oyster was outstanding. But the radish amuse-bouche made two people at our table gag. The halibut was a day too old and smelled slightly fishy. Not inedible, but not what you would expect when you are shelling out $200 a head. Foie Gras is one of my favorite ingredients, and I have never had a foie dish I didn't like; until last night. The risotto looked and smelled so good. Unfortunately it not deliver in flavor or texture. Coast at the Ocean House is five star in every aspect except the food. It is sad because at one time Seasons was arguably the best foodie restaurant in the state. Now I would recommend you avoid dinner here. There are plenty of other places with delicious food at a fraction of the cost. Save your money and just come for drinks and the view. read more
