I am always on the hunt for a good hot buttered lobster roll, and I was very happy with the one from Breakwater. The lobster was tender, and actually seasoned. My husband had the grilled seafood medley which was excellent. We also had the panzanella salad with burrata special and oysters (the oysters were just ok, not awesome, the cocktail sauce needed more horseradish). I went to Breakwater today with longtime friends for a farewell lunch. I'm moving and we were celebrating our friendship before I go. The view is spectacular, especially during the sun setting over the water. I ordered my favorite dish, the Seafood Medley. What came to the table looked nothing like it and it was cold. There were two white rubbery squares (calamari?) that were never in this dish before. The scallops weren't cooked, the coconut jasmine rice was crunchy and sticky with no coconut or jasmine flavor and there wasn't any citrus butter on it!!! Just a plate with everything separate, no sauce. The crostini had so much red pepper on it, it burned my mouth. The shrimp and salmon were the only edible things on my plate. I stopped in with a friend on the Friday afternoon following the Christmas holiday to find that the restaurant was open and serving lunch. We took a seat at the bar where we could take in the view of the ocean and see the sky as a major snowstorm was approaching. I ordered the chili and my friend ordered the chowder bread bowl. On a recent trip to East Coast I went to this seafood restaurant. I've been here at least one other time on prior trips to the area. There are a lot of very good seafood restaurants up and down the coast of Connecticut, Rhode Island, etc., however, this spot really isn't one of them. In my most recent trip, I had a mixed experience. The food was good. Both of soups I tried, the lobster bisque and the New England clam chowder, were good. At least as good at other places in the area. The firecracker chicken had good taste, but the chicken was a bit tough. The fish and breading of the fish and chips was good, but french fries seemed stale. Lastly, the blacken mahi mahi was tasty, but I'm not sure they served or preparedthe fish correctly. The dish meet the description on the menu, but rather than fish being prepared with a nice crust of char/spices, I got fish drenched in sweet sauce. It tasted good, but it didn't seem like blackened fish. I ate it because I was hungry. I was hungry because the service that night was poor. It was also super loud in the restaurant. While the server was present and attentive, it took nearly an hour to get the main courses from time of sitting down. When asked why the food took so long, the server merely said the had a lot of big groups. At one point during dinner, I had to used the bathroom. The men's room only had one toilet, and, I will spare you the details, it was super gross and no one would want to use it. The views and atmosphere are amazing, but that's typical of restaurant like these, and more to do with the location and the quality of the restaurant. In sum, this spot is not a hard pass, but be cautious, there are better spots. read more

My friends and I had reservations for dinner at 7pm but we still had to wait 15-20 minutes for our table. We got drinks while we waited - I got the peach bellini which was yummy. For dinner, I did the crab cake salad but without the cheese and I was disappointed it only came with 3 small bite sized crab cakes and then just the arugula. I wish there was more to the salad. I got a side of the fingerling potatoes and they were good. My friend got the teriyaki hanger steak and that was SO good I wish I got that instead. It's a nicer restaurant as on the nicer side. We had texts acknowledging that we put our name in and went over to the waiting area/ bar where we spent $300 on drinks while we waited. Ambiance was a 5+ - the view is nothing short of stunning. It helped that the weather was perfect but it's rare to find such a beautiful spot that juts into the harbor with an idyllic New England sea coast backdrop. Perfection. Food however was a 3. We had fried calamari as an appetizer. The coating was crisp and dry (maybe a bit overdone?) but the calamari was good. I opted for the Hot Lobster roll as my entree. What I was hoping for was a softly toasted buttered bun filled with lobster chunks. What I got was a charred bun - burnt at the top. But it was filled with lobster. The lobster was a bit dry and the taste was a bit weak. It wasn't as 'crispy' and lightly colored as I hoped it would be. I ate every bite nonetheless. I had a Caesar salad side and that was wonderful! I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of fresh anchovies mixed in as well. My friends enjoyed their meals with average ratings and again - not a morsel was left on their plates. The cocktails we ordered were very good and plentiful. We didn't have desert but the coffee was hot and delicious. All in all - if you're a tourist you won't be disappointed. read more

Our dinner last night was disappointing from start to finish, marked by questionable cleanliness, and underwhelming food that failed to justify the cost. We arrived early for our 7:45 p.m. reservation and asked if there was any way we could be seated early since we were only a party of two. We were told they would have to check and that we needed to wait. Meanwhile, a party of eight walked in without a reservation, asked if there was seating available, and was immediately seated. That was confusing and set a frustrating tone for the evening. After finally being seated, our concerns continued when we noticed bird droppings on one of the chairs and had to rearrange them ourselves, raising questions about the restaurant's cleanliness. We started with a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp tasted as though they had just been pulled from the refrigerator and were only barely chilled, rather than being properly cold as you would expect from a shrimp cocktail. It was a disappointing start to the meal. For our entrées, we both ordered the baked stuffed lobster. The presentation looked great, but the quality fell far short of expectations. There was very little lobster meat, and the stuffing contained almost none. The lobster itself was overcooked and dry, requiring melted butter to make it edible. Averline, our waitress was wonderful , this we want to make noted. Overall, we left disappointed. The confusing reservation process, lack of cleanliness, and poor food quality did not meet our expectations. To make matters worse, we actually left the restaurant still hungry and ended up stopping at another restaurant down the road to get something else to eat. Usually when in Ct a must stop. Location is beautiful relaxing eating on dock. We started by having parking issues the lot is extremely small. Once inside for our noon reservation we found out they ran out of lobsters and they were waiting for a delivery. Very disappointing. I ordered the fish and chips and the fish was good. My guests ordered the seafood sampler which was not eye appealing but tasted good. The other ordered the blackened fish taco. They are GF and without the gf lobster roll we're limited. So the hubby was looking for a restaurant with a ocean view and hoping for a beautiful sunset. Unfortunately the day we went was foggy so we didn't see the sunset....but there is a beautiful ocean view and you can see Fisher's Island from patio deck and interior seating as long as you facing towards the ocean. We arrived early free onsite parking which is a plus. Went inside Sat at the ocean facing bar had a few cocktails and split an order of Oysters Rockefeller 4 plump Ninigrit oysters warm and delicious and the margarita flatbread which I didn't think was going to anything special but it was so good topped with plump roasted grapes tomatoes, cheese and a balsamic drizzle. This was so good but a little messy. We decided to sit inside for dinner since it was a little chilly with the breeze outside. I went with the pan seared scallops over a sundried tomato and asparagus risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly. The risotto was cooked perfectly but was very bland needed some more acidity or salt. The hubby went with the roasted halibut special served over black rice with garlic, kale and roasted carrots. His halibut was cooked to perfection. I was a little jealous and there was garlic. Roasted kale was very tasty as well. All in all it was a good meal and it would be a nice place to go back to on a sunny day. read more

Great food with great views of the water. Their oyster selection (raw bar) was quite nice. My wife had a half pound burger topped with lobster and that was delicious. On our way back to Newport from Mystic, we stopped at Stonington CT for dinner on a recommendation from one of my husband's VPs at his company. He didn't steer us wrong. Breakwater has a great outdoor deck which we took advantage of. It's so nice to dine outside enjoying the ocean, watching the boats and the birds. There's a large bar area inside the restaurant and a large dining room as well. Our server Faith took great care of us. She was engaging and friendly. We started with drinks, a Paloma for me and an ice tea for hubby since we had a long drive back to Newport. I requested the bartender to omit the soda and my Paloma was perfect. Loved the tajin rim. My hubby and I shared the clam & corn fritters and also a bowl of the New England clam chowder. The fritters were crispy with the perfect crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. There were five of them served with homemade tartar sauce. The clam chowder was spot on, filled with lots of clams and diced potatoes, the soup was thick and creamy. I had the tuna tartare appetizer for my entrée, and hubby chose the Baja tacos with grilled salmon. The fish is so fresh in New England. We both enjoyed what we ordered, so tasty! My tuna tartare came with black rice and was served with perfectly crisp wontons. I love black rice! My husband's Baja tacos had huge pieces of perfectly grilled, flaky and tender salmon. He mentioned how much he loved the flavor of the salmon. If you're in the Mystic or Stonington area, I highly recommend this restaurant. I'm so glad it was recommended to us. read more

Brittany is the best! The restaurant has an ideal view and a great choice of outdoor or indoor seating with large windows in every direction. Wonderful breeze off the sound and boats to see coming in and out. Brittany recommended the scallops and she was right, they were superb. Generous portions, I could not finish mine, bit it was excellent. Nice bar selection, some unusual local beers, that's always a plus. Ordered 6 Ninigret Oysters and 6 clams on a half shell. It took 20 minutes for them to be delivered to the table. They were tasteless, the cocktail sauce was basically ketchup. Chards of shells in every bite. My husband ordered the seafood Fra Diablo. He called it good, not great. Solid amount of seafood, overcooked angel hair. Lacked spice. I ordered the broiled seafood platter in citrus butter. Absolutely flavorless. Over cooked salmon, shrimp were soft, not crisp, calamari was tough. The jasmine rice was clumpy and sticky with no flavor and my meal was not delivered hot. Plate lacked presentation. No coasters so drinks constantly sweat on table making puddles. read more

Had a late lunch with friends in this nice modern restaurant that was located literally on the dock and was surrounded by great water views. My bf and I got the clam chowder cup of soup and it was very good. It was nice and creamy and filled with big chunks of clams. We decided to share a bowl of mussels. The mussels came in a curry broth that was mouth watering delicious!! We only wished we had ordered our own bowl of musscles! The parking lot is hard to find, it is tucked between two historic buildings, but once you find the place you are in for a treat. Huge wrap around patio seating with ocean views everywhere. The chowder was excellent, and the fish and chips they brought for my son was delicious. My mussels were flavorless but that may be because I asked to hold the chorizo. I don't think this is a good restaurant to make substitutions or special requests. Also we added on a side of scallops, received 4 of them and paid 15.50. That seems steep to me. Showed up around 7:30 on a Sunday night and got seated without too much of a wait which was nice. However, our waiter seemed like he was either high, sleepwalking, or both. No specials mentioned (even though other tables were offered specials), and it took forever to get our food. The worst part was we got our entrees BEFORE our drinks... Without any explanation or apology. There was a table that was seated after us yet got their food and drink before us. The food was average. Maybe it just tasted bad because of the long wait and disappointing service, but either way, not worth it. We didn't realize we needed a reservation for another popular place down the street. They told us they couldn't seat us for 3 hours! I searched for another restaurant in the area and this one came up with great reviews. I called and asked if they could take a party of 8 and they said if we got there right away they could seat us outside, but in the sun. I'll take it! When we arrived it did take about 15 minutes for the hostess to set up the table, while a line formed behind us. One man walking out said, no tip today. I got a little nervous. Once we were seated though, the service was good. The table was definitely in the sun and there wasn't much of a breeze. My daughter and I both had the hot lobster roll with curly fries. Yummy! My husband had the surf and turf burger that he said was delicious. Our friends had the lobster BLT, which they also said was delicious. Overall, it was a great lunch.
