Let me say first off that I used to love this place. It was one of the main reasons I moved into this neighborhood, plus being less than 5 minutes away is just cool. A $1 coffee and a Mighty O doughnut make a great breakfast. Lately, they've been giving me total "Seattle Freeze," "Holier than thou" attitudes by the servers. I know it's Maple Leaf, and I really love to support local businesses. I got screamed out for wanting a sandwich yesterday. Also, what coffee house doesn't print their prices? While it's great they make most items in house, it came to $18 for two meh sandwiches!! Yes, I still love their coconut bread and Elvis cake but I can get a mocha anywhere. I waited until I had gone here a number of times before I decided to review this place, and by that I mean I've been going here two days a week for nearly five years... It is easily the gold standard of what a coffee shop should be. Awesome and varied baristas: Super sarcastic yet sweet gay guy, the retro gangsta in Jnco's (not sure if he knows he's ironic but that makes it better doesn't it?), coffee house mom, super friendly hipster girls, and the guy in a band who alllways hits on my girlfriend. They bring the personality to this place, and it's clear that its a good place to work because many of them have been here for years. Great coffee: Cheap drip, awesome Americanos, chai, tea, Odwalla if you come in with a hangover. They also have a pre-paid punch card if you're the type that get's the same thing every time. Badass.. MOTHAFUCKINBAKEDGOODS!!: Not Costco muffins drying behind glass, or shit biscotti in a jar, but proper baked goods, made onsite! Homemade quiche, muffins, breads, and if you stay too long, ohhh noooo you get BBQ... The prices are great, the atmosphere is good, there's a shit ton of puppies outside on a sunny day. Heavenly and right in my own hood! Beware weekenders: it gets pretty packed and counter line is in continuous flow. Once you've sat down and scored a table your greeted with the best breakfast in town! Vegan oatmeal, all pastries, quiches, scrambles are housemade and scrumptious! Came here for a study session. Received the most watery, weak latte ever. Definitely didn't taste like it had more than half a shot of espresso in there. Tried to tell the barista but she got super defensive and basically told me I was mistaken and there was no way that could happen. Okay. I recently went to see Patton Oswalt make fun of Seattle. He said that there's no other city where you could get away with paying for things with a poem and a smile. It's pretty much true here. They have a $4 minimum on debit cards, just so you know. BUT, if they see you regularly, you can do an IOU. You don't even NEED poem! But a smile helps (and if you come back and pay for your shit eventually). The parking is funny. It usually looks crowded because the lot is so small, but I magically get a spot two steps away every time. Just watch out for the Roosevelt traffic when you pull out! The Cloud City people are fantastic. I love walking in to the little jangle of the front door bell and seeing the regulars with their little hip babies and dogs. Besides, who doesn't want to be greeted every morning with a Big Lebowski quote, which is pasted to the front door window. Stuff like that just makes you feel like you're really in a place you belong. The coffee is excellent and always served quickly and to order. I recommend the $1 brew with some coconut bread: it's excellent. They have a great selection of juices, desserts (cookies and cake) lunch items (sandwiches mostly), and breakfasts (breakfast sandwiches, breads, oatmeal, scones and pastries). This is a nice little neighborhood cafe, staffed by pleasant people. It wasn't terribly busy around 11 AM, but appeared to host a variety of regulars. I appreciated that they had vegan and gluten-free food options available. My friend told me that they have really good sandwiches, so I'll try one of those the next time I go! I ordered a vegetarian GF frittata and received a generous slice. It wasn't anything special, but it was nice and salty and perfectly filling. I also ordered a 12 oz chai-der-nog (chai, cider, and egg nog) off their winter drink menu (I love that they have one! I love seasonal drinks!), and they mixed their sweet and spicy chai teas together for me. My drink was fine, kind of nondescript, yet with somewhat warring flavors.. if that makes sense. I used to love this place and come here all the time. However, my last visit changes everything. On a nice day, I like to play banjo outside which is never a problem in capitol hill or first hill and to my knowledge never a problem at cloud city. Usually their patio/parking lot is not particularly crowded and people always thank me for playing. I came to get a coffee and sit outside for a spell and I was informed of a new policy against live music. What? I was not given a reason for the policy and apologized to the 3 guys outside that were excited to listen, called the 3 friends that were going to meet me for coffee, and have written this place off as "not music-friendly". This place holds a special place in my heart. It was the first place I took my gf of 5 years too. Over the years cloud city has gone through a couple of changes all which I think have been great for the shop. I have always been a fan of their vast kitchen menu for a quick brunch. The coffee program has evolved over the past 3 years which have been really pleasant to see and taste. My only compliant is the inconsistence in milk texture. I drove by Cloud City a number of times before I stopped in -- it's on my way to my last workplace on the alternate (read, I-5 is f**ed) alternate (read, so is 99) route. It's set back from the road a bit, in a converted garage that used to house, if I'm not mistaken, a dog biscuit company. It was the "drip coffee, $1" sign that caused me to stop, but it was more than frugality that kept me coming by. The atmosphere is homey and family friendly -- there's a couch and kids' books and toys in the right-hand corner, but in the morning it caters mostly to a workbound crowd. The dollar coffee is made managable by the honesty box that you compress your dollar into. Then you help yourself to a cup of either size (I think it's 12- or 16-oz.), and pour from one of their dispensers. They run out frequently in the morning hours, so the coffee's pretty fresh. And there are a number of varieties with mostly-helpful labels on them. There's even a proprietary "Cloud City Blend." They do have lattes, of course, and if you choose the counter, you'll wait a few minutes in the morning. Not too long, though. It's not as packed, for example, as your typical downtown Starbucks. They also have a growing menu of food to choose from: bagel and muffin sandwiches; skinny, $2 breakfast burritos -- these are my favorites. Their pastries are great -- I know because they always have a generous sample plate, so I think I've tried every variety of scone. There are many. Cakes, quiche, sandwiches in the afternoon. It's good solid comfort food. Despite the aforementioned family nature of the place, it does cater to a younger audience as well. It's decidedly queer friendly. There's free wi-fi, and nobody will bother you if you sit there all day with your dollar coffee and your blog. There's a pretty decent sized bulletin board, and people often leave the New York Times for you to steal the crossword out of. All in all, it's a great place; I'd give it a 4.5 if I could. What'd make it a 5? It's a little crowded, and the chairs are OK, but nothing too comfortable. Not much to improve upon here. read more

A different coffee shop than most.... Positives: 1. They have good food and plenty of options from desserts to soups to sandwiches to salads. I tried both the herb tuna and the chicken salad. Both good. Not too much mayo. And huge portions! Plus with all sandwiches, you get a side of salad (small portion) or chips. 2. Specialty coffees of course, but even for drip coffee, they have multiple blends. It is self service. If you come in with a big 16oz personal mug, it is only $1 to fill it. Drop it in the jar and you can be in and out of the place in 30 seconds. A 12oz latte is about $3.55. 3. Many tables which is good since there are definitely a lot of people that come here to study. Also, some people that just come for a slice of cake and to socialize. 4. 2 bathrooms. Clean. 5. Parking in lot as well as street. 6. Free wifi 7. Friendly staff Negatives: 1. Not enough outlets. A lot of tables located in the center of the cafe with no easy electrical access. 2. For water, you basically need to go behind the cashier counter and get it from the soda tap. Would be easier if they just put out a pitcher. Definitely a good place if you want coffee + a sandwich - many coffeeshops do not offer this option. read more

Wow, why can't SF coffee shops be like this? I had a Mocha which was delicious. Also I had an organic bagel with egg, cheese and ham which was perfect. They even toasted the bagel with those fancy panini things so it was nice and tight and warm all throughout. The coffee and the food only start to make this place. I came here on a Tuesday afternoon and stayed from 12-4 to study. I got a latte which seemed decent, but I'm not much of a coffee drinker. Also got a tuna sandwich which was decent as well. Would have been 3 stars but +1 star for the nice baristas who let me study there for so long. As a place to hang out, it seems great. Lots of seating arrangements: couches, indoor tables, counters, outdoor tables. I saw several outlets so it's a good place to bring laptops. BUT as a place to study, the music is really loud. They played oldies from the 80s/90s which I find more distracting than indie. People around me would sing along with the songs. And the acoustics of the place amplify noise, so it was kind of hard to concentrate. And definitely a lot of kids coming through. So if you're a parent, it seems like a good place to bring kids. If you're looking for a quiet place to study, not so much. read more

What a local gem! I've been coming here for about a year now, ever since moving into the Maple Leaf neighborhood. Disclaimer: I love sandwiches. Period. So this is a biased review. :D doesn't help that I love a good cup of coffee as well. Came here on a whim and was surprised at how many options there were for food! Breakfast burritos, pastries, cookies, and best of all- sandwiches!!! I ended up getting the turkey/cream cheese/cranberry sauce one with a salad as my side and I split the French press for 2. (This ran smaller than I thought- or maybe I just drink a larger amount of coffee than most?) Very cute cafe with adequate space and friendly staff who kept all areas clean. Oh, Cloud City...I had high hopes. With a kiddo you tend to look for new places that are child-friendly and near playgrounds. If they have good coffee, I'm there. I read about the Maple Leaf park and thought it would be worth a try (it wasn't, really, but there were some nice people there who told me the park is slated for a major renovation.) Wanted to grab a late lunch and a latte and enjoy the area. The coffee? It's that fruity-peaberry type, that tasted mulchy and peaty and is not my cup of tea. I am HILARIOUS. The COFFEE was not my cup of TEA. Oh, let me catch my breath. Ooo whee. What's up with dat? OK - so, the lemonade was decent. Not made there, but a good quality. Grilled cheese? Fine - kid was happy. Veggie quiche? Tepid, soggy, flavorless, sloppy, unsatisfying, expensive. Shall I go on? Weird flavor choices including brisket and pork. I think of quiche as a light meal. If you want to make a casserole, just do it, I say! What made everything especially unpleasant were the dozens of flies that the staff are evidently keeping as pets. No effort whatsoever to get rid of them. Not even fly strips in the corners or other deterrents. The walls/windows were all open, which is great, but that also revealed horror #2: the disgusting trash that smelled like (dear readers who may be eating please skip ahead) diapers or sewage. I was seriously almost knocked over by the awful stench. It killed the experience. The area for kids is just lame. The baked goods looked decent, but the overall gross atmosphere is a huge turn-off to eating. EVERYTHING needs to be cleaned. Even the chairs are dirty.Cobwebs and thick dust everywhere. Everything seems off-kilter. I'd shut down, clear it all out, scrub it all down, repaint, refurnish and simplify. But the worst was when I asked for a to-go box for the half-eaten kid's sandwich, and the guy who had just taken his sweet time collecting all the nasty trash (including from the bathroom) reached in an grabbed a container, holding it out to me with his fingers all over the inside. So I asked, "Didn't you just take out the trash?" "Yeah." "Well, did you wash your hands?" And he shook his head, put the takeout container BACK WHERE HE JUST GOT IT and sashayed over to the sink. O M Gross. Yeesh. Update: Got contacted by the owners who claim they will be making some changes. Haven't been back yet, but hope things are better. read more

Classic Seattle coffee shop! Been going to Cloud City 2-3x/month for 8 years. Building is former auto repair shop with large garage doors that still function. Service is counter only, line moves quickly and the staff always friendly. Self serve coffee- honors system is available, with several coffee varieties to choose from. Food is surprisingly great- the morning breakfast sweets are homemade and better than any starbucks. Morning breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches are fresh and beat fast food easily. Lunch menus vary with lots of tasty sandwiches and salads. Kid friendy, always a dog or two in the outdoor seating area. Free wifi. read more

I am definitely excited about Cloud City. Their coffee is wonderful and on any given morning, you can expect to be greeted by smiling faces and an abundance of yummy pastries and breakfast items. The muffins, scones, breads, etc change frequently and it keeps it interesting. I love the morning glory muffin, but last time I was in they had a raspberry feta and another day an apple ginger. Very unique and I like that they get creative with the baked goods. Their cookies are legit as well. Especially the molasses ginger one. Wow. Definitely a neighborhood gem. read more

I'm always made to feel welcome at Cloud City, and the employees, well, they know my name, and that's meaningful to me. What's in a name? Everything. Cloud City is a typical funky neighborhood coffee shop. It has lightly used couches, tatttoo covered baristas, a few middle aged professionals pecking at their laptops (what are they writing? a novel, a business plan, or ??), and servicable coffee. I go because it is in my 'hood and I can walk there. The $1 drip is a really good idea, particularly since you can drop the money in a jar and avoid the line. I also like the self-serve oatmeal. My only real criticsm of the place is that the scones (while large) can leave a bit to be desired. They can be a little dry sometimes. But that won't stop me from going there... oh no. They could serve scones made out of Qwik-Crete and I'd still prefer Cloud City over ANY Starbucks. read more

As an admitted resident of the area, I have pondered on how to best describe this neighborhood, coffee shop. Had it not been for Yelp's lack of 1/2 stars this place would get a three and a half. Most of this review is service and overall "neighborhood" feel but it goes without saying no place is perfect. Service. I am 75% positive 25% negative, on this one. As a consistent Sunday morning coffee and snack customer, I am often at a loss when I have to repeat, after almost two years, the same order. Breakdowns 25% positive, their longtime male barista who gets my spouses 99% right, but still he reaches for that cup and knows and even remembers my standard drip. 25% positive after today, for recalling our snack. And 25% for having a loyalty program in the form of a punch card for those that constantly show up. 25% negative for not doing a better job of educating new staff on regulars, to make those have supported you through the years, feel more at home. Food & Beverage. Coffee isn't the best, but then again one cannot complain when it's still only $.99 a cup and it's self-service. My spouse enjoys the effort put into her her weekly latte, but admittedly is spoiled by Starbucks and the taste. Fresh baked food is great and the fact that one can get a vegan Mighty-O without having to drive to Tangletown, is also a plus. Environment. It can be a sociological nightmare, between the oblivious parents with one child but insist on taking up three tables, or the occasional "to-go" customer, who can't seem to understand that the door doesn't close on its own. If concrete floors and non-neutral soundtracks being played aren't your thing you might want to stay away. Overall this place has some pros and some cons, but for us this is our neighborhood coffee shop, warts and all. read more

There are lots of places to get coffee in Seattle, but very few with a family and sit down and hang kind of vibe - that's what I like about Cloud City; that feeling I can come and hang in a neighborhood atmosphere. Having said that, I find the quality of espresso drinks and food to be inconsistent. There are days the coffee is excellent, and days it is watery and tasteless. The pies look great, but the bottom crust has been raw dough each time I've tried it regardless of which pie it was. When I pointed it out, the Baker came out to speak to me and told me it was just because the pie had been sitting in the case. Not a great answer on so many levels. The other baked goods range from being terrific, to dry, dry, dry. Their gluten free choices are minimal at best, and rarely vary. Step up your game Cloud City - I get that you're popular because there is little around you to attract neighbors, but that's not an excuse to be inconsistent and not make changes where they are sorely needed. Hope to see better gluten free choices, consistent quality in your espresso drinks, and consistent baked goods quality in the near future! read more

What a cute neighborhood joint! This area is more residential and less commercial so a place like this is a welcome addition for coffee lovers this part of town. Not only can they make a decent cup of joe, they also have good food. Kudos to them for having a couple of well-labeled gluten free items! I've heard great things about their pastries too although I've yet to try them myself. I've mostly been on a frittata/quiche kick so I've been trying the variety they have. While none of the ones I've tried have blown my mind, they're still solid eggy breakfast offerings. They're satisfying and will hit the spot for you. I'm not too happy about them being microwaved but I suppose I can't complain too much because they hold up from being reheated. Wish they'd invest in a panini press though to warm them that way! Service is always super friendly. It's a great cafe to take your kids and even dogs to as I've seen many others do. Parking is not a challenge. You'll leave caffeinated and full! read more

This place rocks! Went her after my disappointing experience with pie in fremont by the suggestion of my esthetician. Was totally fab. Apparently they make their pies and goods daily in the early am. I got a slice of one of their like 8 (seriously) quiches. They have a vegan oatmeal bar (no honey), big cookies, fresh made egg criousant sandwhiches, coffee cake and so much more! Oh yes, and coffee. This is definately a local hot spot you can't miss. I imagine it's perfect for a sunny weekend morning with it's large patio area and big doors that open to the outside. Also a plus- multiple bathrooms, bar type work seating and a decent size kids play area. Super family friendly. Not by any means a library quite cafe though in the am; like I said it's a local fav. read more

I am only commenting on their ambiance. I am sure it's cozy for some people. It is LOUD, like a pub. I wouldn't read anything there and I don't think I can have a conversation with a friend without yelling at each other unless you sit under the umbrella outside and be right in front of the parking area. Parking is another problem, you can probably find street parking -- circle around the block a couple of times, or if you are lucky, you can find a spot in front of the shop, which isn't that big. read more

I live close and walk here all the time. The lines are long, the place is always packed, but the people are nice and the food and coffee is good. I sat here with my laptop one day before our internet was hooked up and oh-my-god the place never slows down. Good luck finding a seat, especially if there is more than one person in your party. You will have to be a lurky seat stalker to score anything most times. If you don't like kids, don't bother trying to hang out here. The area for kids and their parents is always packed and extremely noisy--sometimes beyond your normal kid noise. Some days it looks more like a giant playdate space that happens to serve coffee. If I didn't live so close, I'd probably choose to get coffee elsewhere, mostly because of the fact that it's always a little crazy, but it is seriously close. read more

This is MY spot! I've been coming here for around two years and I've never had a negative experience. I eat here at least twice a week, the staff recognizes me and a few of them know my order :) The atmosphere is perfect, the coffee is delicious, and the food is to die for! The staff is always welcoming and happy to greet any and all customers. If you have dietary restrictions, there's plenty of vegan, vegetarian, gluten and dairy free options. They make my favorite breakfast sandwich in the city and I always look forward to eating here.
