Informed wait staff at my daughter hated pepperoni and so waitress spoke to Manager and the manager response was that she could do nothing for us unless we waited for another pizza so my daughter who hates pepperoni had to choke down the ham, mushroom and pepperoni (who eats pineapple, ham and pepperoni Lol? it's Thursday we don't have all night. Cleary's is definitely consistent. We've been there a few times for meals over the years. When I first started coming here I was too young to even realize there was a bar too. The separate banquet room is quite nice and makes it easy to forget where you are even if you visit the restaurant and bar regularly. The last event I attended there was a baby shower for a friend. We had buffet style pizza and salad, which was good and a nice break from a lot of the food you get at some showers. The long room made it kind of difficult to see some of the opening of gifts, but the plus to that was that it was easy enough to visit if you were at a table at the other end and not interrupt the guest of honor. read more

A typical Irish pub with TVs and a lot of local knick knacks and photos filling the restaurant. There was a leak in the ceiling right when you walked in, and the bucket was full of just yellow, dirty water. Not exactly a great first impression. The furniture is a bit outdated, and when I sat in the booth, the entire seat cushion slid back. I had the fish sandwich, which is apparently a new item. It's one big, beer-battered piece of fish, perfectly crisp and fried. The fries were pretty good. This probably wouldn't be my first stop when I'm visiting, but I could see how I'd be a regular if I lived there because of their happy hour specials, and I'm intrigued by their weekend live entertainment. read more

Damn good honest food, often offered at an unbelievable value. A weekday lunch is particularly special with a 1/3 pound Angus burger and real restaurant fries to be enjoyed while sitting in a comfortable booth and costing about 5 and a half bucks. Even better, the order is taken and food delivered by a friendly wait person and you know at every moment you are in a family owned local business. Would you rather slug through a Mc drive-through? Walked in and said this place looks like it's the hometown bar in a movie that everyone goes back to. That impression, however, was unfair. I throughly enjoyed the goat cheese, in fact it schlap. I also ate the chilli and after 2 bites said that it was my favorite restaurant chilli I've ever had. Now granted I don't eat much restaurant chilli but you get the point. They don't know how to make a Reuben. My friend ordered a Reuben, and was explaining to the waitress how he likes it prepared. She completely dismissed him and said if you don't like it, send it back. Not surprisingly, the bread was gross and soggy, because she wouldn't take 30 seconds to let him explain. Also, she brought him the wrong sides. Someone, possibly a manager, brought him another one, but it was prepared the same, so it was just as soggy. How do they not know how to do a Reuben? Also... we ordered a pizza. Apparently, it fell when it was taken out of the oven. They told us they were making another one. No biggie, mistakes happen... Anyplace else I've ever been would have offered a free appetizer or something. They seemed annoyed that they had to apologize to us for us having to wait another 20 minutes. Just awful service all night. The one star is because the pizza did taste very good. read more

I want to say this review is actually between a 3 and 4 star review. I've been twice in the last 2 months months and both visits were enjoyable. Clearys takes covid restrictions seriously in the restaurant but not the bar. I don't care about that at all. I love to see a full bar full of people enjoying themselves. The food is great with good portions and great food and drink prices. There is literally something on the menu for everyone !! My only complaint is, they should serve the marinara for the breadsticks warm, not cold. I love the pickle fries. Probably the best version of fried pickles I've ever had. Service is not the best. Our appetizer came before our drinks. Overall though a great place to meet friends and eat!! read more

Cleary's is one of about a dozen restaurants/bars in downtown Howell. We were looking for decent place and came across Cleary's Pub. The main entrance is actually in the back, with parking, not from Grand River, but we weaved our to the hostess. Its a long and some what narrow place. With 6-8 outdoor tables on Grand River and another 40 tables and a bar spots seats too. It was busy, bustling is probably a better word. Noisey with many little groups having a good time. Its sort of an Irish place, with an Irish style menu, which has a number of options, a step up from the standard bar food offerings. I went with the shepard's pie, one of my favorites and the wife had a california chicken sandwich. They both hit the mark. Services was solid, Its a popular place and they do a decent job, its worth trying. read more

Yesterday's visit found the inside to be way too warm. So we sat on the shaded sidewalk patio. This turned out to be an excellent choice on this beautiful sunny afternoon. Our table was perfectly positioned to people and traffick watch. Grand River is the main drag in Howell. You can see every kind of vehicle from new to old and restored pass by. Then I enjoyed the pedestrian fashion parade. I ordered the blackened sirloin tip salad. Which I found eatable, but would not order again. My friend was happy with the choice of crabcakes. When I walk into a restaurant, I want to smell food. We ate here like 3 times while visiting my sister and never smelled food cooking. I think everything is frozen and microwaved. My sis loves this place, but I can't find anything positive except they have Oberon on draft. Burgers - eh Shepherds pie - eh Pizza was okay. There are so many better choices to eat. The service is not as good as the food. We've been here countless times since moving to Howell. The first time, we went on a Sunday night. The dining room was empty. We were 2 of the maybe 10 customers there. Despite being slow, our waitress was constantly disappearing. Luckily, there was nothing wrong with our food, but it was a hunt to try to get our drinks refilled. The second time: I met a girlfriend on a Tuesday night for appetizers and drinks. We walked in the front door, and a staff member yelled at us to go to the back to be seated. Our mistake, but it isn't particularly clear where the hostess stand is or which door is preferable. Service was hit-or-miss again. When we asked the waitress for a beer/wine list, she told us no, they didn't have one. What? 10 minutes later, she came back and - miracle! - a beer/wine list magically materialized. I ordered the Griz that night, and would not recommend. It was not flavorful, and very greasy - I became very ill later that night. Most recently: We ordered two Deli Reubens for takeout. They were fast, hot, and still our favorite. Also - we met our friends here last week, and while the service was admittedly better than before (even on a busy Friday night with a live music performance), it still wasn't stellar. The food was just as good and the wait for our table was only about 15 minutes. Would recommend to others, but with a grain of salt. read more

First time I've been to this one vs the Chelsea venue. What a difference! Had the Delmonico steak & it was deliciously cooked to perfection with a large portion of steamed, fresh veggies, salad & baked potato! Our server was not trained on cuts of meat or the practice of serving butter with potatoes. One of our Howell go-to places when we have visitors from out of town. Irish-themed pub in downtown Howell that gets a little too busy at peak times (Friday dinner time), but usually offers pretty good service. The pizza is pretty good, especially with the pub's garlic butter on the crust. We're also fans of the fish and chips, the griz sandwich (but ask for it on a sub bun instead of a wrap) and the fries. Not a huge fan of the sweet and sour chicken wrap, it was dry and lacked flavor, and the California chicken sandwich, also a little dry and could have used thicker avocado slices. Prices are average, but they have great beer specials during Detroit Tigers games. read more

This Cleary's location has an excellent menu. I've never had anything I didn't enjoy. June and Mindy behind the bar are always smiling and sweet. They provide for excellent service and great conversation. In the summer it is always nice and cold in here which love. Great pub style atmosphere with beautiful dark woods, long welcoming bar, with a positive, lively crowd that offers just the desirable amount of background noise so that table conversation is still possible. We came out Thursday evening for dinner, it was packed, but we did not have to wait long to be seated. They have a good menu selection to choose from. The food presented nicely, and our waitress was pleasant. My mushroom swiss burger tasted a bit saltier than I would have liked it, but otherwise it was good. But boy was it LOUD. I could barely hear across the table, it sounded like people were trying to yell over one another, to the point my ears were aching! Food is wonderful and the drinks are awesome. Especially the upside down brown sugar cake drink. It has BSB (brown sugar bourbon) in it and it's like drinking a pineapple upside down cake. I came back here last night again to show my gf how good this place was because I loved the fish & chips here. Of course, as luck (or bad luck) would have it...she ordered a stuffed chicken dish and it came out looking very nice and yummy...however, the first bite was disasterous. She had me try a piece to see if it was just her or if the chicken really was as bad as she made she thought it was and yes, it was pretty bad. I would say it tasted like chicken you re-warm after it laid a couple days in the fridge...just not fresh tasting but kind of old. We flagged down the waitress and she promptly replaced the dish with something else. The second dish we ordered was fried shrimp (6 good size pieces) and they were pretty good but, considering you had to taste gross food and then had to wait additional time to get it...the least a business could do is give you even a $2 credit for the inconvenience. I'm not looking for free food ...just good food and sometimes that's a lot to ask for. read more
