Nearly each day of my life I feel sad that I live too far from Boston to buy Clear Flour regularly. Along with Tartine in San Francisco, this is the best bakery in the United States in my humble opinion.
As for the treats I am going to name my top ten here. Everything is virtually perfect in nearly every single way but if you are like me, you are reading this to get some idea of what to buy among all the ridiculous stuff on sale. Frankly, if you are about to eat here you are one of the luckier people in the world right now. I wish I were in your place. Anyway, top ten!
1) The Bouchon: Sometimes people order the chocolate pudding thing, but they are just confused. This is one of the most perfect, glorious, tasty items ever created in any bakery. When you bite into this you can taste like a quarter pound of Valrhona chocolate.
2) The Financiers: Jeeze Louise these are amazing. Chewy, almondy, with an almost custardy center and a crispy, buttery exterior. Just ever so slightly accented with fruit (sometimes blueberries, sometimes raspberries). A stunning treat.
3) The Almond Macaroon: You will notice these little gems not on the rack at the back but rather under glass right when you are ordering. Do not pass on these. In fact, order a few. They are worth it. Airy, light, and astonishingly good. NOTE: After a recent visit I feel the Bacon Egg and Cheese Croissant should also be #3.
4) The Baked Donuts: So stunningly light, not greasy, and enlivened either raisins or a touch of aniseed. These superb donuts are pillowy, decadent, and subtly sweet.
5) The Morning Buns: I thought they just had these on the weekend but I was wrong. They have them during the week too. They are insane. So light and full of cinnamon. Get the one with walnuts.
6) The Chocolate Chunk Cookies/Molasses Cookies: This is a dead tie. The chocolate chunk cookies literally have striations and levels of chocolate among excruciatingly perfect, buttery cookie crumb. The Molasses ones are everything you could want from such a cookie. Chewy and wonderfully spiced.
7) The Raspberry/Apricot Croissant. This should be higher but there is some tough competition here. The bright, fruity jam perfectly sets off the croissant's delicate layers.
8) The Monkey Bread: This is like the morning buns but all stuck together and with a lot more of the sweet syrup in it. Just really decadent and amazing.
9) The Baguette. I know, I know. The bread shouldn't be so low on this list. This is Clear Flour Bread after all. But listen, this is a top ten. Meaning I feel this is better than almost everything they sell and it is awesome so definitely get it.
10) Gruyere Croissant/Chocolate Croissant: While these both kind of take second seat to the glorious raspberry versions they are well, well worth a try.
I also want to shout out to the awesome quiches, rustic tarts, the Chocolate Coconut Macaroon, and the rare Caneles and Pretzels; but if you walk into this place blindly and just order anything you will be happy.
I have probably stood in line about 10 times here before the place even opened. Each time there has been a large amount of other like-minded people in front and behind me. Once it was so hot people could barely stay in the sun more than a few minutes without risking serious heat exhaustion and still the Clear Flour line was long and proud.
It is well worth the wait. It is well worth the price. Trust me. This is about as good as bakeries get in the United States. read more
