This spot serves authentic Cantonese claypot rice that genuinely feels like a comforting, homemade meal. The rice is well-seasoned and achieves that perfect, crispy layer at the bottom of the pot. The sautéed water spinach is an excellent side dish to add to your order, and the fresh lemon tea is balanced and refreshing. Your meal also comes with a pot of complimentary hot tea. The establishment is clean and sanitary--with the added convenience of a clean customer restroom - which I feel is rare for Chinatown. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Don't judge the book by its cover. It is a small restaurant but everything we tried is tasty and authentic! The servers are very friendly as well! Be mindful of finding parking at Boston Chinatown though as it can get pricey.
Bringing colleagues to Clay Pot Cafe, and it was excellent as always. One colleague exclaimed, "I've been missing out on all the claypot rice煲仔飯 I've had before!" Minced Beef Claypot Rice免治牛煲仔飯: Surprisingly, the minced beef was served in a thickened meat sauce. The sauce was smooth, the rice grains were distinct, and after mixing, the egg and meat aromas were rich. The scallions were fragrant without any unpleasant odor, which was a surprise. However, the seasoning was a bit bland, so I added three extra spoonfuls of soy sauce. Spare Rib Claypot Rice排骨煲仔飯: The spare ribs were carefully selected, all easy-to-eat small ribs with a rich meaty flavor. My Sichuan colleague added a lethal amount of chili, which made me, a Cantonese, dizzy, but I have to admit it tasted good. Pork Pattie w. Salted Fish Claypot Rice鹹魚肉餅煲仔飯: I forgot to take a picture, but I didn't see any salted fish, while the patty had a distinct musty aroma from the fish--did it dissolve in the claypot? The pork patty was tender and smooth, simply divine. Hong Kong-style Iced Milk Tea港式凍奶茶: It tasted authentic, but as always, it was a bit bland. They were out of eel today; hopefully, I'll be able to get some next time!
A no fuss, no frills restaurant. Simply delicious food is what you will get. This is a rather small space. I came for a late dinner and it did not take long to get a table. They bring out a complimentary hot tea when dining in. I got the chicken and sausage clay pot and water spinach. Both were exceptional. The chicken was perfectly moist and juicy. The crispy bits of rice were amazing. I also got a hot Hong Kong style milk tea which tasted exactly like my childhood. I am not from Boston, but I would gladly come back whenever I am here visiting again.
This is a classic Cantonese clay pot place in Boston. The restaurant is quite small, but it wasn't too busy on a weekday lunchtime. I got the chicken and sausage clay pot rice, along with vegetables and a soup. The clay pot took a while to come out, but it was warm and fresh. The crispy rice bits from the bottom were great, and I really liked the soup and vegetables too. Always great to get authentic Chinese food like this in the states.
My wife wanted to eat here badly for lunch. We ordered the 1. Turtle Soup 2. Chicken gizzards with bell pepper 3. Frog Clay Pot Everything you do is over the phone like ordering. They hand you the food. We also ordered the tea as well. The vegetables like the peppers would good that we ate the entire thing. We ended up eating all three of the dishes and was good.
A True Cantonese Classic in the Heart of Chinatown Clay Pot Cafe is a remarkably unique spot on Kneeland Street. It was our first time trying this style in the U.S., and it's a total game-changer if you're looking for authentic Cantonese comfort food. The restaurant is small and cozy, giving it that perfect "hole-in-the-wall" feel where the focus is entirely on the craft of the clay pot. The Highlights: * Abalone & Lobster Clay Pot: My wife had this combination, and it was excellent. The lobster was fresh and paired perfectly with the tender abalone. It's a more upscale take on the traditional rice pot that felt very special. * Frog Clay Pot: I went with the frog, and it was cooked just right--nice and tender without being overdone. * The Rice : This is the best part of the experience. The jasmine rice is perfectly cooked and sauce, but the real prize is the crispy, caramelized layer at the bottom of the pot. Scraping that off is the highlight of the meal! * Stir-fried Rau Muong: We also ordered the stir-fried water spinach (Ong Choy) with garlic. It was a great, fresh side dish that balanced out the richness of the clay pots. The Experience: It's a very traditional setup, and because the rice is cooked to order in the individual pots, it takes a little time--but the wait is 100% worth it for that crust. It's a different kind of dining experience that brings a real taste of Hong Kong-style street food to Boston. The Verdict: If you want something beyond the usual dim sum or lo mein, Clay Pot Cafe is a must-try. It's authentic, affordable for the quality you get, and offers a texture you just can't find anywhere else. Just a heads-up: it's a small space, so it can get tight during peak hours
the clay pot is good i really liked the flavor. they have a variety of options to chose from and other dishes that aren't clay pot. definitely a worthwhile place to check out in chinatown if you're visiting just know the inside is small.
Got dinner delivery from here and was very satisfied. I've been to the Clay Pot OG location in Chinatown many years ago and remembered it was quite good. So when I landed in Logan and opened Uber eats to look for dinner option, I was excited when I saw Clay Pot Cafe popping up. I ordered the clay pot dish with Chinese bbq sausages and pork congee. Both were very good. Highly recommend checking this place out.
Renovations have definitely improved claypot cafe from last time I was here which was like a decade ago. They leverage the QR code ordering system where you can scan the QR code from the table itself, which brings up the menu and you can select an order right from the directed website. You can order from the staff as well. He speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese. The food is cooked to order so you might have to wait a little bit. The prices are very reasonable and the portion options allow you to order a large medium or small. 4/5 - The beef chow foon was excellent with the right amount of wok air and very well priced at around $12 for big plate. 4/5 - the Chinese sausage with spare ribs, clay pot rice came piping hot and super fragrant. The rice was perfect softness and mixed with the hardened rice bits. The juices flavored the rice well and really hit the spot. 4/5 - Braised beef brisket was meaty and the flavorful sauce really made this dish top notch. Mix this with the rice from the claypot and you have the perfect combination. The portion of brisket is generous for the price. The staff tried to upsell me on the herbal soup, but I was way too full so maybe next time. Overall, an excellent place for a hearty and recently priced meal. It gets full really quick so I advise you to come right before they open. About 30 minutes after we sat down the place was already packed.
It's a very small restaurant with 6 tables but the restaurant was packed. Ginseng and black chicken soup was warm and nourishing. Chicken gizzard with peppers was slightly overcooked and chewy. The pork intestines with peppers could have been washed more thoroughly. Three treasures clay pot rice absorbed all the flavors of the meat cooked on top
When I visited Boston Chinatown, I randomly found a place on Google Map named "Mongkok Clay Pot Rice" in chinese, which resembled a place in Hong Kong. It was 19°F so we were desperately in need of warm and carb-heavy food. The clay pot kept the rice steaming hot from start to finish, perfect for the cold weather in Boston. ＊Chinese Sausage and Bacon Clay Pot Rice 臘味煲仔飯 (L) $33 Their clay pot rice is available in small, medium and large portion. We were too ambitious and got large...My jaw dropped when the food arrived. The portion was MASSIVE. It could easily feed 3-4 people. I chose the most classic and basic lap cheong claypot rice. It was a layer of chinese sausage and cured pork belly topped on a bed of rice, drizzled with sweet soy sauce. The crispy rice at the bottom was my favorite. I have never had claypot rice in Hong Kong even I was born and raised there. My standard for clay pot rice might be low, but at least they seemed pretty authentic. I wished they could add mushrooms to add more depth of flavors to the rice though. The space was cramped and busy. You place order through QR code, yet the online order system was a mess because they kept messing up people's orders.
When I walked in I was surprised how small the restaurant is. Despite that we were still able to get a seat. The online ordering system was convenient and I like that they had this feature. To start we ordered the Hong Kong milk tea which was standard. The eggplants and vegetable were also standard, nothing special. I was excited to try the eel claypot rice, but it didn't reach my expectations. During the middle of our meal, one of the waitress casually let out a long loud fart without worry. That was definitely a unique experience.
Amazing gem in Chinatown! Highlights of the trip at this no frills establishment. It is very loved by the community as it was packed with revolving customers. There is very limited seating and in a small space so order your clay pots ASAP as it takes 10-15 minutes to make, eat and gtfo so the next group can sit. There aren't a lot of places that make this style anymore and I really appreciated the memories this meal recreated for my family. For about 10$ a pot it was well worth the trip! read more
Delicious. Clay pot cafe is an authentic, hole-in-the-wall, cash only spot. I ordered the Chinese Sausage Claypot Rice and it was ~chefs kiss~. Make sure you mix the meats and sauce into the rice before enjoying! The highlight is definitely the crunchy rice, so don't forget to scrape off the layer of rice on the bottom. My friends said the Abalone Claypot Rice was a little soggy, and they preferred the drier flavors. To balance out the carbs, we also ordered a side of garlic pea shoots, which was kindly recommended by our server. If you and your party are up for a challenge, the restaurant also offers a large (like, enormous) claypot for sharing. read more
Small, hidden gem in Chinatown. Staff was extremely accommodating and nice. Got the Chinese sausage and bacon clay pot rice. Took about 15-20 minutes to come out but it was delicious. Definitely recommend checking this place out. Will definitely be coming back in the future! read more

Located at a small corner of Chinatown in Boston, I believe this place serves the most authentic Clay Pot Rice. This was my first time there and the waiter recommended combining Eel and Sausage together for the claypot rice, it was perfect! There will be a slightly charred crispy part of the rice when you get to the bottom of the claypot which was fun because it reminds me of eating rice crackers. Pair the claypot rice with a side veggies, yield a heartwarming yet super affordable meal! read more

A little family owned restaurant around the corner, not intimidating at all. They used to only accept cash. Now they accept credit card too. The Chinese name of this restaurant is a landmark in Hong Kong. So I am guessing clay pot here is Hong Kong style (yes there are variations). But the sausage in Chinese sausage clay pot is a bit too salty and less sweet to be Canton style, delicious either way. I would recommend the signature yellow eel clay pot. The eel is fully flavored, soft and chewy. The rice is firm and crispy as clay pot rice should be, glazed with sauce and oil. It's delicious and unique. Haven't find a second place in northeastern America that makes clay pot like this. Don't miss out! read more

Awesome find! Little hole in the wall, super authentic. Great value, very reasonable prices for huge dishes. Of course you have to get a clay pot-- we tried the minced beef and pork, would recommend. Favorite, though, we're the freshly made pan fried dumplings (we got pork)-- best I've had, huge portion and yummy dumpling sauce. Cash only so hit an ATM before you get there :) read more

The perfect hole in the wall spot for a hot meal. I love just about everything on the menu because they're able to perfect the rice. I got the small, which was the perfect portion. My boyfriend got the medium, but I would've thought it was the large. There's a bunch of 2 and 4 tops and one 6 seater. I came with a party of 3 and they had us share the 6 seater with a couple. It really feels like you're grabbing a quick bite with your friend's family after school. Service is fast, nothing big to really talk about. Remember to bring cash!! read more

The claypot rice was delicious and reminiscent of Hong Kong. For Boston standards, definitely one of the better Cantonese options. The spicy braised brisket was alright, with 麻辣 (mala) spice but too much bean sprouts and not enough brisket for the price. Veggies were delicious and served in a clay pot. Price is slightly expensive for main dishes but the rice is reasonably priced. The claypot rice also had decent 飯焦 (crispy rice on the sides), an essential element of claypot rice. Make sure to ask for extra soy sauce. read more

Claypot cafe excels at the basics. The rice is aromatic, smoky flavored, and salted to perfection with soy sauce. The toppings are all Cantonese classics with bone in chicken cut in bite sizes, Chinese sausage and topped with fresh green scallions. Each bite is delicious and packed full of basic yet fantastic flavor. Even the layout in the claypot cafe is simple with a couple tables and chairs. The bathroom is tiny with makeshift towel handles, but don't get me wrong, it's all clean and neat and well thought out. Claypot cafe is fantastic, I can't recommend it enough. Expect to spend about 10-15$. read more

A small hole in the wall restaurant, CASH ONLY as other reviews have noted. Food I've tried: - SCALLION PANCAKES ($4.50): very standard scallion pancakes, not too oily. - YELLOW EEL CLAY POT RICE ($12.75): the eel was well cooked and not rubbery. There was a generous portion of both the eel and rice, definitely for the cheap price. Though I enjoyed this dish, personally the sauce was a bit too salty for me, and as the rice itself was soaked in the sauce I could not adjust the saltiness ratio with the rice. Though I do have a lower salt tolerance. - SPARE RIBS CLAY POT RICE ($9.75): the marinated ribs were very tender, falling off the bone. Same with the yellow eel, the portions were great but it was a gain a bit too salty. Atmosphere: - Very small store with 4-5 tables. Decor is pretty minimal. Service: - Food came out pretty quickly. Again, it is a CASH ONLY establishment. Overall: - The portion is decent for the price. Flavors are good, they taste as you may expect from looking at the pictures if a bit on the saltier side. Definitely well seasoned. If you are in the area looking for a quick meal, this would be a good place to try. read more
I really want to give this place a higher rating, but I just couldn't. Considering their place is known for clay pots, I was very disappointed in the Chinese sausage and bacon clay pot. The rice was very dry, and lacked the crispiness people desire from clay pot rice. However, I love the shredded pork and preserved egg porridge. It's definitely one of the better porridges I've had in my life, and I would order this again over the clay pot rice. On top of that, this place is very affordable, so it's a great place to eat at if you want a cheap and homey type of restaurant. read more

It took 45 minutes for our clay pots to arrive which is a long time but worth the wait. Do not order the claypot if you're in a hurry. Rice was fragrant and the meat was soft. We got the yellow eel claypot and the chicken and mushroom claypot. Loved both dishes. The waitress was very nice to us as well and acknowledged the wait time. read more
Cash only place, beware. The food was good. But we feel like the owner kinda forced us to order more food and when we refused, he looked unhappy. We ordered the big clay pot rice, some green vegetable, and soup for 4 people and we had hot tea. Definitely enough food for 4 but when we were ordering the owner kept telling us to get more food because it wasn't enough. Maybe he's just used to getting customers that eat a lot and us west coasters don't eat much! My friend who is a local told me that this is a popular place so make sure to be ready to wait in line outside because the place is pretty small with only a few seatings available. But we were lucky enough to not have to wait at all! read more

Classic as classic gets. Clay pot cafe's clay pots tastes exactly like you would expect from a dish straight out of China. The rice around the edge is crisped to a delicious golden brown and the toppings (regardless of what you get) is so flavorful and permeates throughout the rice making eat bite better than the last. The restaurant itself is a smaller venue and come use some uplifting, but you're there for the food and not the ambiance. So that being said if you're looking for good classic Chinese clay pots, there's no better place read more

I had the yellow eel and the Chinese sausage and bacon! The eel was very soft and a little bit chewy, and still had the skin on which I don't mind. I got smalls in both and it was a bigger portion than I thought. Such a great quantity for the price! The eel was lightly seasoned, and was less oily than the other rice (probably due to the bacon and sausage oils). However, I did like the sausage and bacon better because the extra oil allowed the rice to get extra crispy! This is such a unique restaurant, definitely go here to try something new. It is a tight space inside so I definitely recommend getting there early. The service was very quick and you order by scanning the QR code on the table you sit at. read more
This place is a perfect example of old school food that's done without compromise. It's an old school Cantonese spot that serves clay pot rice and other classic fare. The decor is non-existent. To call it a hole in the wall is generous. It's grimy and really no frills. The food though is without a doubt excellent. The clay pot rice is fragrant and delicious. The Chinese sausage along with the slated fish and pork patty rice was top notch. If I had to gripe, the size of the clay pot rice was pretty tiny so you you need multiple. Think of each one as a single serving. Prices are fair and I love supporting places like this. If you want a good clay pot rice in Boston, this is your ticket. read more
Warm heartfelt meals in cute little cute pots, what more could you ask for? This cafe nestled right in the heart of Chinatown is easy to miss because of its small size, but you shouldn't pass on it. Known for their clay pot rice bowls, this is one of my favorite places to go in Chinatown for a wholesome meal. Dishes ordered - curry fish balls - deep fried dumplings - chicken and Chinese sausage clay pot rice* - chicken and mushroom clay pot rice - minced beef and egg clay pot rice * *favorite dishes Pros - very tasty and packed clay pots - fast customer service Cons - smaller restaurant so it can feel packed if the restaurant is full - curry fish balls were not very tasty Recommendations - can't go wrong with any of the clay pot dishes. My favorites are chicken and Chinese sausage. The minced beef was very moist Verdict Great place to go for a warm and hardy meal! read more
I came here for a weekday lunch. We got lucky and were able to sit immediately but the restaurant is very small with only 5 tables. Definitely a no frills place with good food. We got the minced beef and egg clay pot, fish clay pot, and Singapore noodles. Everything was yummy and satisfying. Nothing mind blowing but just good comfort food. We finished all three dishes between the two of us but I was very stuffed. They also serve you complimentary tea. Cash only! read more
I am so excited about this place!!! Delicious, authentic, and cheap clay pot rice. Serving size doesn't look like a lot but it ended up being perfect size for each of us. NOTE: cash only We got the minced beef and egg clay pot and the chinese sausage and bacon (pork belly) clay pot. For both, the rice to meat ratio definitely had far more rice than meat, which could be a problem for meat lovers but I didn't mind. The egg with beef provided a perfect texture mixed with the rice. Chinese sausage was very tasty, but this dish was on the dry side compared to the beef. Overall very fast service with wonderful cheap eats. Feels like I'm back in Hong Kong in this restaurant. Can't wait to return. read more

It's a rare find in Boston for sure. Don't expect much in service and seating, it's a quite small place. Taste: I came across this place when I read about this place possibly being the best clay pot rice in Boston, and to my surprise I think this is one of the top clay pot rice I have tasted. The rice dish is very good, each rice on its own to a degree, the crispy edges are very tasteful and crunchy. This is only acceptable if you are okay with greasy food to a degree, but it's a nice treat once in a while. The other dishes I have were not much of a surprise. Service: barely any, set your expectation. Cost: very cheap for a place in city. Be warn of the service, so tipping will feel like you have been cheated out of you. Also cash only. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a quick cheap meal that's centered around rice. read more
Clay pot rice is a childhood nostalgic favorite and this place makes it the traditional way. Many people complain there's not enough meat, but the best part is the rice. The crunch on the bottom they is! Otherwise it's just claypot meat hah! But it's very family-oriented and owned. Any other vegetable noodle or soup orders feels like home-cooked. Try something new My go to: - chicken mushroom sausage clay pot rice, ask for an egg on top too! - garlic bok Choy - black chicken soup (very herbal) Many order the yellow eel. If there's a wait, it won't take too long. People go in eat and leave. read more

Warning for those coming for the good deal: the prices have increased to a min of $9+ for clay pots. CASH ONLY!! Only 20 seats really, but not typically very busy. As a whole, this place disappointed. The rice was pretty poor quality and very starchy. The toppings were sparse and not the usual generous servings I was used to from NYC clay pot rice places. There is some seasoning, but it's very mild and honestly barely there. The rice is 95% of the dish, and it's honestly too bad that you have to really portion out your bites to finish your rice. It's not a bad place if you're looking for a filling meal, but it definitely doesn't satisfy the clay pot rice craving. read more
A very small restaurant but the food did not disappoint. Before you go in, make sure you have some cash. I found this place on Yelp and I love rice cooked in a clay pot so I couldn't resist. The place is very tiny with no more than 10 tables. The waiter was nice and attentive. My friends and I ordered Peking raviolis (big dumplings), 2 hot & sour soups, minced beef clay pot rice, Chinese sausage & pork clay pot rice, and beef chow mein. The food was delicious, I love the crispy rice in the clay pots. The total was about $50. It was so cheap and delicious. I would definitely come back here. Minus point: this place won't be handle a big party. read more
CASH ONLY Also it's Chinatown so what do you expect but it was definitely something that I've been wanting to try for a while but the clay pot was good, different from what I expected as we ordered the small and the toppings were really tasty but there was a lot of rice in comparison to the rest of the food but I definitely seeing myself coming back if only to try the other stuff! read more

I've been wanting to try clay pot rice since I saw it in a YouTube videos years ago and finally got the chance to here, and they did not disappoint. I accidentally showed up with a party of 7 because a lot of friends ended up wanting to see what clay pot rice was, and I was worried that the restaurant wouldn't be able to fit us, but the owner merely chuckled and then unfolded a table and brought chairs over to make sure we all had a seat. Many people in my party had no idea what they were doing, but one of the waiters helped explain what everything was to them. Overall, great service. I was really surprised by how low the prices were (~$10 for a small clay pot) which I thought was a good size for a single person. Especially in Boston. They also brought us complimentary hot tea and refilled it quickly any time we indicated that the tea was empty. The clay pot rice came out ripping hot and the rice was perfectly cooked. There was some sort of sauce drizzle into the rice, so that plus the meat was very flavorful. The crispy rice against the side of the pots added a nice mix of texture and char to everything. The scallions were a nice touch too. They are a fairly small restaurant that can seat maybe 15-20 people total and only take cash, but they have superb service and tasty food so please give them a try. read more

I am visiting from out of town and when I saw this place pop up on Yelp I knew I had to try it. Very small little place with close seating but u didn't mind one bit. The man and woman working were so kind even though I had a hard time communicating what I wanted (he wasn't understanding "steamed" dumplings), he asked a Chinese/English speaking customer to help and we got it figured out. Hot tea was served immediately when I sat. I had never had clay pot before and it was so delicious. Next time I'm down this way I will be returning. read more

This was my first time eating at Clay Pot Cafe and it is a great spot for lunch or dinner. The location is conveniently located a block down from the Chinatown Gate on Kneeland Street. Chinatown is walkable from the red, orange, and green line. However, parking can be difficult in that area. There is not a lot of indoor seating - only about 5-10 tables, so it may be difficult to get seating around busier lunch/dinner hours. I went around 2pm, so I was thankfully able to get table for 3. The waiter was very nice and immediately brought us hot tea (which was great since it was so cold out!). The menu has plenty of appetizer, clay pot, rice, porridge, soup, and special dish options. I got the curry fish balls, steamed dumplings, beef clay pot, and wonton soup (pictured). All dishes were very flavorful and came out hot! I highly recommend the clay pot dishes - the rice gets crispy along the edges and is very tasty. The portions are also pretty large. It is priced reasonably as well. My friends and I ended up staying for over two hours and the waiter continuously filled our tea pot (at least 3 times!), so they were very attentive. Overall, I definitely recommend Clay Pot Cafe if you are looking for plenty of options and a fantastic meal. The only downside is the limited seating and the simple decorations, but the nice staff make up for it! Will be back again. read more
02/20/2021 I read the good reviews of this place and wanted to try it out. I got the Chinese Sausage clay pot. The service was pretty fast and I got my takeout pretty fast Remember to bring cash! Looking for a home cooked meal, Clay Pot is the place. It's a small place with about 8 tables. We ordered beef chow fun, abalone/chicken/mushroom clay pot and Chinese broccoli with garlic. All the comforts of home. The staff are friendly. Low key with no frills, remember, it's cash only. read more
I really liked this cozy little spot for authentic clay pot rice! They have some variety of other options, but clay pot rice is definitely the signature dish. I ordered some of it and found it quite good, though a bit tough to eat since the chicken bits had lots of bones. That said, my friend ordered the mapo tofu and I honestly enjoyed it more than the clay pot rice, so don't think the restaurant is only good for that. The place is pretty small and very homey. That plus the fact that it's a little off of the main Chinatown streets gives it a hole in the wall feel. Service was good, especially considering it seemed to be a one man operation (at least in the dining room). Note though that they are cash only. If you want to try authentic Chinese food from regions that aren't common in most American Chinese restaurants, definitely check it out! read more

Cozy and casual restaurant with authentic Chinese claypot cuisine. It took around 15 min to serve due to the nature of claypot cooking, but it's definitely worth the wait especially during a cold winter night. I have to leave a review for this amazing hole in the wall Cantonese restaurant! You walk in and you have 90s mandopop in the background with Chinese kids and elders all eating at the same table.
