I ordered the 5 piece catfish and 1 order of hush puppies, which is 3 hush puppies,which were very small. The fish comes in thin strips instead of fillets so if you're hungry order at least the 5 piece. The flavor was meh, pretty bland and not at all crunchy. I got the Cole Slaw and the potatoe salad as I was required to choose a side with the hush puppies. The cole slaw was soggy and the potatoe salad was really sweet. Both tasted like commercially prepared pre-made products. I asked for extra tartar sauce and got 3 packets of nasty tasting sweet glop labeled tartar sauce. They also included 3 packets of hot sauce. Overall for the fish it's like they don't really care whether it's good or not. I haven't tried their bbq but if they care so little about the fish I really don't want to waste my money on the bbq. Ordered the fried snapper, potato salad, greens and cornbread and beef hot links with mild sauce. The only thing I enjoyed was the hot links. They were really good and the sauce is on point. The greens were plain, not a lot of flavor. The potato salad was decent. The fish was not very flavorful but my BIGGEST disappointment was the cornbread muffin. It was ice cold. Which tells me it probably wasn't made that day and just taken directly out the refrigerator, wrapped in foil and put in my bag. IF I were to come back I'd definitely get the hot links again. First of all let's start this out by me saying that I am very hard on barbecue. I have an awesome Louisiana and Mississippi background followed by some Chicago meats... I come from a family who puts their heart into meat preparation and barbecue. I found this place on a fluke. I am so impressed. As soon as I drove up I could smell the smoker going outside. I ordered ribs, sliced beef and some hotlinks along with macaroni and cheese, greens and some baked beans. First let me start out with the baked beans they knocked me off my feet. There's not just regular kidney beans in there but there is an assortment of different beans and they are delicious. The greens were cooked down tender like I like them and seasoned to perfection and not all vinegary. The Mac and cheese is made like how I make it at home baked in the oven and not creamy but... perfection. Poor customer service. Called and they were out of ribs at 2:00 in the afternoon and they only take cash. They told me to call back in 45 minutes for ribs. I call back 45 minutes later and the phone rang several times. Someone answered and hung up. Thought maybe there was a bad connection, so I called back. Same thing. Rang 15 to 20 times. They picked it up and hung it up again. First of all, what business in 2021 does not take debit or credit cards and why are you hanging up on potential sales? I'm a Black person who really tries to support Black owned businesses. But this really pisses me off when I have to concede to supporting my own because of this type of behavior. Makes me want to open up my own business. I'm assuming they continue to do this because there really isn't any good soul food barbecue places (and yes, there's a difference) here in Vallejo. And it's really sad. I've been in Vallejo for 5 years and the food places here are terrible! From the quality of food to customer service. Somebody needs to step up and put them out of business. Drove up to CJ's, having seen it a few times but never trying it out. Me and (turns out to be) Rodney met eyes. I said I'm looking for some good fish and chips, and he replied that he's got what I want. It was a nice day out, probably mid 70's, but it was closer to 80 inside this joint, and it somehow seemed right. Now, good fish for takeout lunch is hard to come by, and my experience is that, good or not so good, it aint cheap. CJ's is no exception. The menu is BBQ and various fish. Initially thinking some kind of ocean whitefish is what I'd order., but then catfish nuggets caught my eye, and that's what I ordered. Came with two sides, and here's my only complaint: less fries, more SLAW! The french fries were fine, thick cut, nice and moist. But the slaw... Coleslaw is a matter of taste, and there are many ways to make it. Cjs cuts the cabbage a little thicker, so it stands up to the mayo and whatever else they use to season it. And they happened to hit my taste buds square in my happy spot. MORE SLAW!!!! The catfish was breaded lightly, cooked just enough to be crunchy outside, moist inside. AND not over salted. It's always a bummer to get overly salty food of any kind. So nice job you guys, letting the product stand on it's own flavor, with room for salt should someone have to have it. Not me, seasonings were all spot on. I had hollered back at Rodney how I hoped I'd get good and full on my $XX Catfish Nugget w/two sides lunch, and I was not disappointed. My girl and I could have split it in half and been satisfied. Good thing she wasn't with me today, because once I started in, there was no turning back! I went in looking to satisfy my collard green habit. They don't do collards but do do turnip and mustard greens. Really good stuff! As good as any collards I had throughout the south touring famous bbq joints. The only thing I'd change is the styrofoam the take out comes in. (Isn't styrofoam illegal in CA?). I was hesitant about trying this place, but I found it surprisingly good. I got a two way combo of chicken and ribs. It was delicious, the first time I went I got potatoes salad and beans. I have to say the sides are very mediocre. And the sauce was too sweet, I regretted having not told them to put it on the side, but the next time I did and I was much more happy with my order, I also ordered fries which were made to order and a better choice than the sides. read more

I 'found' this place, driving through the parking lot as I was getting lost going somewhere else! I'm really glad I did! I've been ill for a few years and am having problems getting enough nutrition, so I need to make sure what I get, is palatable or I just can't eat it. I took a chance and ordered the catfish nuggets. These were, hands down, the best I've ever had. I didn't have high hopes, honestly. Usually people overcook fish to the point that I can't even chew it up. This stuff was perfect! The first bite, I thought I got a piece of fatty pork covered in seafood breading. The fish was perfectly fatty (which, I realize is a personal preference) and definitely not overcooked. I ate an entire small serving of this! The fries were good, but I had no room for those. Although I ate all the coleslaw, which is pretty impressive because I'm a coleslaw snob! It has a bite to it but not inedible. Some of my medication is also causing me to have a sore tongue, so a lot of things that I perceive as being "bitey" really aren't at all. We debated on the Mac salad--best ever, or second best. I'm writing the review, so best it is. Beans and slaw, from scratch and on point. We took enough home for another meal and then some. Horrible. I walked In the person taking my order was very nasty with a horrible attitude. I told him that's ok I'll leave. I personally prefer this place over Gracie's bbq bc Gracie's bbq lacks a kick to their bbq sauce. CJ's bbq is good because their medium sauce has a very nice kick to it. I must note that CJ's mild sauce lacks this kick. So if you try their bbq, go with either medium or spicy. The meat has a nice smoky flavor and the sauce is terrific. They let you chose 2 side dishes with the bbq, and I am not a fan of coleslaw, but I really like the coleslaw from this place bc it's not so mayonnaisey. I've tried their catfish, but wasn't too wowed by it, but then again, I am not really big on fried fish. But if you come here, try the bbq. It's kind of pricey, but tasty! read more

Ok, let's start this review by stating that I made a huge mistake when I decided to order through Yelp from their link. I placed the order and the system states that the order will be ready by 2:19 p.m. Upon arriving to pick up the food, I notice the cook up front scratching her belly while cooking, okay I guess. Then I proceed to step foot inside only to discover this place is dirty and dingy, and I think to myself it's kind of questionable to eat here. I approach the counter and the lady there seemingly does not want to help me as she's rummaging through her purse and states she's unaware of any order being placed through GrubHub. Ok, so I left empty handed and I guess in this case that's okay considering the impression I got starting from the cook, to the counter person and her lack of customer service, and lastly the restaurant's appearance. I will not ever be dining here, as I'm left furious due to the unnecessary drive and terrible customer service. I called GrubHub and disputed the transaction as I left empty handed, and requested a refund due to not receiving food in exchange for payment. Funny how they collect money for a nonexistent order, how does that work?!?! I guess I can consider myself lucky to be able to avoid a possible food poisoning. I would not recommend this restaurant, and I would have to say I will never dine using GrubHub ever again. If I could provide a no star review I would, as they don't deserve it! I was not happy with my two way combo and sides. The quantity of the meat was great but the BBQ sauce was super duper sweet and I'm not a fan of sweet BBQ sauce. The sliced beef was okay. The side potato salad needed some relish mustard and some more seasoning. It was served in the plate and all of the BBQ sauce spilled over to the potato salad the greens had turkey meat this was a plus and one of the reasons for a second star but they were stringy and mushy with vinegar yuck!!! the baked beans full of BBQ sauce and season salt I was very disappointed cold cornbread the food was overpriced for the quality. I've been going to KC BBQ in Berkeley for years. Since they've closed I haven't found any BBQ that I love but just settled for decent. I decided to try CJ's and oh how happy I was. The ox tails are great! The ribs are awesome and the beans are really good. I'm going back tonight to try the beef brisket, greens and Mac n cheese. Definitely recommend this place! read more

I've been really happy with this place for the past couple months that we've been coming here but today there was a sign saying "under new management" and now the ribs were tough, the potato salad and mac salad are totally different and BAD.
