So I went online to Vallejo Community Group page because I was hurting for. Meat and three with Mac and cheese. This was recommended as a local spot that could give me what I wanted. They did not disappoint! Large portion that will be three meals for me. And I added a side of cabbage that was tender but not wilted with smoked sausage. Baked macaroni that still had body to it. Delicious candied yams. And three large pork ribs. I am diabetic so I'm used to low sodium and it was a wee bit too much for me, but the flavor was on point. So . . . it's been a few days since Thanksgiving, and I'm still not happy - so, if it shows in this review please understand my frustration. We had ordered a smoked turkey from here based on a word-of-mouth review. The turkey was $130, and apparently there were only 100 available that day. The photos and videos and videos on their Instagram looked good, so we went ahead. What a surprise we received! When the turkey arrived Thursday afternoon at home, we all had the same thought - no wayyyyyy!! The turkey was black. Not golden, not brown, but black - as in burned, charcoaled and crisped beyond recognition. We asked the family member who picked it up (it's a 45 minute drive from our house to Vallejo) if he asked about its condition, and he said they replied "that's the way it (the turkey) cooks." Well, in decades of having home cooked turkeys, and turkeys smoked elsewhere, none of the 7 adults had EVER seen a turkey cooked like this one was. I've included some pics from their Instagram and you can see the difference from what they advertised, and what they delivered. The shock really didn't wear off of us as we started dinner, and with some (limited) hope we tried the meat in side, hoping it was not affected. Hope springs eternal, and reality stopped us short in that fantasy hope - the meat was destroyed as well as the outside. The wings were atrophied, the legs were tough to pull apart, and the breasts were dry as well - you could grab a piece with your hands and literally break it in half like it was styrofoam. And, the whole carcass had a nasty burned smell, not smoky in any positive way, but like it had been through a house fire. The smell of freshly burned turkey permeated the kitchen AND the meat! Even if edible texture wise, the odor of the meat was like eating a campfire circle. Unpleasant on many levels. Not ONE of the 7 adults could eat any of it other than a sample taste to see if such was even possible. It was not. We are not sure what happened, but if this is what they consider an example of "Here at Ruby Jewels Catering we take great pride in the meals we prepare ..." and if what they stand for is "Commitment . . . Quality . . . Pride" (their website) then I think they need a new mission statement or better quality control. In any case, to pass this off to someone for the very high price of $130 is a travesty. If you are considering them for food service or catering, just remember this story of the trust we put in them for our family Thanksgiving dinner. read more

This was a little challenging to find especially at night since it's a small window between an office and laundry mat. No signage and no fancy lights, the only reason why we knew we got here was the people waiting outside & the number on the building. Highly recommend ordering online so your wait doesn't have to be that much longer. Our online order said it would be ready by 7:30pm, got there around 7:35pm and the order didn't come out until about 8pm. The lady was super nice and thanked us for our patience while the dude simply brushed us off saying "about 10 more min, i'm busy". LOL Anyway, the food came out piping hot which is a good sign. The total was about $60 for both plates. The fried shrimp was good but a little heavy on the salt. The garlic noodles had great flavor but the noodles seemed a little overcooked and that can be from sitting in its own heat. I had a good piece of rib, but my friends said their pieces were a bit tough. We all loved the mac and cheese, though. I'm a big advocate in supporting local biz and especially Black owned, so come check this place out! It is pricey, but just think of it as a good cause and the food aint completely bad. read more

You wouldn't know about this place unless you heard about it because they don't have any signage outside. It's a little hole in the wall spot. I thought it was good. I liked it. Have ordered their $50 crab dish on several occasions. Food is typically tasty but today I purchased 2 crab dishes. The crab pieces (4) were smaller than my ring finger and dry. They had two additional larger legs but also extremely small. If the restaurant is unable to procure average size pieces then they should temporarily remove from the menu. I spent $134 for two plates of food and received crab pieces. I can't even call it portions. As previously stated I've purchased this crab dish several times from this restaurant and know what the portion sizes typically are. Extremely dissatisfied, last purchase. I got the oxtail special that was hardly edible and the gravy that was made for it tasted burnt. I had Mac and cheese and baked beans but the Mac and cheese was super salty and very dry. Baked beans tasted like bush's so edible at least. My friend got the Tri tip served well done that tasted like straight bbq sauce as it was totally smothered. Garlic noodles were a lil on the mushy side but two plates ran $60 bucks which is way too much for 6oz of Tri tip and 2 inedible oxtails. I definitely will not put my Holiday Meal fate in someone else's hands!!! A meal on the run with a little adventure is fun . But I can go on and on. My mother loves this place but the third year is the last year! The first year the food was great, but my husband bit into a thumbtack! The second year the food was great but not all sides promised were included in the order. So this year I decided not do sides just get a smoked turkey. I saw a review of Ruby Jewels on the bayareafoodz Instagram page and had to try them out. I've been following them for a minute and showed their posts for today's food to Mike. They looked so good that we decided to drive from Vacaville to Vallejo today to check them out. As we pulled in the lot you could smell the food smoking and it made me want to eat right then. OMG the smell was When we saw the menu from the car we were like DAMNNN (in our Craig and Smokey Friday voices). The prices were a tad bit on the pricey side as the last post I saw with pricing was about $5 less a plate. But we love BBQ and to support our small businesses so we got out and ordered. The kid who took the order said it would be about 5 minutes. When it was ready I talked to the lady inside and she asked if we had ever had Ruby Jewels before and I told her it was our first time and we drive from Vacaville. She said we would like it. I asked for a bag so Mike couldn't eat it on the way home We got home and opened up the bag and the food smelled and looked delish. I will say the reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is based primarily on the portions we received. On their Instagram page most plates looked pretty full and ours not so much. I would have thought we would get a full link but each plate only had a half link cut into two sliced sections. The links were very good though. Not too spicy and with good flavor. Each plate came with two ribs which were pretty meaty and with limited fat. They weren't drenched in sauce which is good because I love dry rub ribs. I was able to taste the smoked flavor and the great seasoning. Ribs weren't tough but they also didn't fall off the bone. The ribs were my favorite taste-wise as they were full of flavor. Mike had half a chicken breast which was really good. Can I say there is just something about grilled chicken. Yum. The chicken was cooked to perfection. Not dry and not too moist. The chicken also had good flavor and didn't need to be drenched in sauce. The last meat was the steak which was really tri-tip and was thinly sliced and only had 4 small pieces. I did have to dip this in the BBQ sauce as it didn't have much flavor/seasoning. Now I also love sides and I wasn't overly excited about these. The Mac & Cheese was okay but needed some salt/pepper as it lacked a little flavor. The beans were good and not too sweet and had an added bonus of meat in them. Mike's wasn't too full and I swear he ate all his beans in 3 bites. So...Ruby Jewels has good BBQ that I might grab again if in the area or eat if I saw them at a food festival but overall we were a bit disappointed in the portion size. My Grandmother lives in Vallejo and I wanted to send her a nice Mother's Day dinner. I ordered the crab, shrimp and pasta. Added on yams, drip juice and mac&cheese. Small establishment at the ends of Vallejo. There's a sign on a smoker out on the sidewalk but the window itself is pretty small so I missed it the first time (i tried to open the door to # 1922). I placed the order ~130 for a 330 pick up, i ended up picking it up a whole hour later (bad on my part because i was running behind). The gentlemen that helped me were super nice - i always appreciate when people look directly at me when speaking (vs looking at the register, phone, etc...) Ribs - these were beef ribs, I'm not sure that it specified pork vs beef. They fell off the bone and the meat was fairly tender. 7/10 Tri tip - a little tough here. I was hoping for this to be juicy and tender but it was not. 4/10 Links - came with a whole link, nothing special. 6/10 Chicken - I'm not typically a chicken person (I'm usually biased towards red meat considering I'm an almost blue rare kind of steak person) but this was my favorite item. Super tender, soft and not dry. 9/10 Wings - these were some tiny guys. The sweet chili was good, I'd pass on the garlic parm since the garlic flavor wasn't enough for me here. They did have an okay crisp to it, they weren't soggy. 10 of these for $17 is a hard no for me 4/10 Garlic noodles - these were also just okay and the garlic flavor didn't really come through for me. 4/10 Mac n cheese - this was solid. A tad on the saltier side but packed creamy, buttery, cheesy goodness. 8/10 Cornbread - also nothing special but i like when it's more on the gritty/easy fall apart/not overly sticky or sweet side 7/10 Vallejo is where i was born and raised so i always want to make sure i try out the smaller businesses that pop up here but overall, i probably wouldn't go out of my way to come here again (today, i came from the 925 area). If i was in the 3-5 mile radius area and was craving something heavy, I'd go but try something else. To be fair, i may have just ordered the wrong thing - i feel like most word of Mouth I've heard is around their fried items/seafood. The meats were okay but really relies on the bbq sauce to hold them up/give them flavor. -1 star for lack of flavor in items, -1 more star for price/portion size. I paid ~$80 but definitely didn't feel like it was worth that. I'm honestly not a cheap person, especially when it comes to food. I'll definitely pay a good amount of money for a meal that makes me want more but this wasn't it. I really really wanted to love this place. It's definitely a must try. The tri-tip was so tender you could cut it with a fork! The ribs were falling off the bone. They were so flavorful & the sauce was perfect it didn't overpower the flavor of the meat. The prawns were deep fried a little bit too much but they were still flavorful and good. The sides were on point too. Mac N Cheese was so good! The garlic noodles were cooked just right not too buttery and you could taste the fresh garlic. Hawaiian rolls were fresh. My potato salad wasn't in the bag, not a big deal. Maybe double check your order before leaving. It was worth every penny! I will say that it's not a spot to go on a lunch break. We decided to give it a try and I can honestly say that RJ rivals the best I grew up eating in The Town. It might be too premature since we have only eaten there once but they might even be better. The mac n cheese, OMG it was on point! I might even go as far as to say better than my MIL who is from Louisiana and throws DOWN in the kitchen. (She might kill me is she ever read this) LOL. I never thought the day would come where I would have to leave such a review like this for this establishment. Yesterday I saw on Ruby Jewels Catering's Instagram that he was open and was also incorporating a new smoker so that it can cook more BBQ meats inside. I was intrigued by it and decided to come by yesterday night. I drove from San Jose all the way to Vallejo to possibly enjoy some good food since I was having a slightly stressful day. Seeing from other reviews on here, I did notice the terrible customer service people had anticipated and also the somewhat long wait. I don't mind as long as the food quality is great. The second I tried to order I had to juggle between other people trying to pick up their orders as well. It was beyond confusing because I was intending on ordering 2 plates but I was told that they had ran low on ribs. (What I thought might still be there since he had a bigger smoker from his earlier post) He abruptly went to go place the order in the back kitchen so I just stuck to one order after that. It was also beyond confusing to pay because the second people got their orders at the window, they started pulling out their cards to pay. So what is it going to be? Pay first and then wait to get the food with the buzzer? Or pay once the order is ready at the window. Then people wanted drinks with their orders and that took extra time as well. It was just a hot mess. I do see what people meant by how dismissive/slightly rude the owner was during your interaction. It seemed rushed, and the experience doesn't make you want to come back. When I received my order, I was underwhelmed by the portion size. The tri-tip chicken tasted alright, but as for the hot links it was probably on the grill too long because it was literally burnt. I don't mind a little char but from the photo below it was really dark and dried out. The Mac and Cheese was really just cheese and noodles like another reviewer stated. The beans tasted fine. The blueberry drip juice was watered down and didn't taste like much, was not worth the $5. This $25 food plate and the $5 drip juice was not worth the money, neither the drink, or the experience. We hosted a Youth Easter egg hunt with barbecue catered by Ruby Jewels but due to inclement weather we had to reschedule. We rescheduled to an inside venue and Chef Drip provided the buffet in grand fashion. The meats (ribs, Tri-tip, links, roasted chicken and fried chicken) were fresh hot off the grill. With his grilled parked in the parking lot, Ruby Jewels Catering provided the main dishes and sides along with the best Tri-tip - hot!!! You know real meat Tri-tip!!!
