Drove 1.5 hours to see what is this place about. We ordered Dungeness crabs, oysters, cat fish, basa and jumbo prawns. We asked for it to be fried. We waited 45 mins.. oh boy it was worth the wait! Can I just say, that I love the play of words with the name, SoulTrans. For those who know..know. This was my first time here and was happy that my cousin introduced this spot to me. I came on a Thursday during spring break. Things to know: They open at 10 am but don't start frying until 11 am. It took about 15 minutes to fry my order but can take longer to both order AND fry when you come on the weekends or at busy times. The parking lot is very small and they had construction going at the same time (someone was jack hammering) so it made it even tinier. There's street and neighborhood parking. I could've eaten in my car like all the social media folks but there's plenty of small parks nearby to eat at a table comfortably and not take up parking stalls. If I understand correctly, it's $3 to fry per pound and they don't fry unless what you're ordering is over $5. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The service was PHENOMENAL. I knew what to do because of research but I did let the guy know that it was our first time here. He was patient and kind and recommended yummy items. LOVE their garlic butter that they warm up for you. I liked to squeeze more lemon juice in it. Tasted just like Miss Apple's crab shack in cocoa beach Florida. So good and kicking myself for not getting more. Crack sauce was meh. Glad it's an option, love that it has fish sauce, but when you can and know how to make your own, you won't get this. You'll be in the hood of V-town if you roll through here. Stuff I observed that laid as evidence on where you are at. 1) tasty whiffs of green bud right on the sidewalk/storefront; 2) super tight parking lot that was chaotic as heck; 3) as I parked on the street I saw a truck push another car (inoperable) bumper to bumper through an intersection. LMAO Place is basically a seafood market where you can also get many things for a Soulfood pantry like beans of all types, etouffee and gumbo spice packs, hot sauces galore etc. I was digging it! The seafood cold case is actually pretty impressive tho not laid out to be pretty. If you're used to Whole Food's cold case, you'll be in for rude awakening. Lol. Things are just randomly laid out in piles, some have pricing, some don't. They got a crazy selection of at least 8 fishes, you can pick bones or no bones, lots of shellfish with many different types of skrimps (remember you in da hood), cleaned crabs and even lobster tails and crawfish. They also have chicken parts. Now what makes this place super unique and really draws a crowd is that they'll fry anything that they carry...for a slight upcharge, maybe $2-$3 per item you choose. And when they fry something it'll be coated in a nicely seasoned cornmeal/flour coating. It is light and will impart just a slight crunch, no big crunch that'll ring in your head. Things tried: Perch ($7ish/lb.4*) I wanted to try a fish that you normally don't run into, so I went away from snapper, catfish and salmon, even though they all sounded good. I think I asked for 2-3 pieces but they gave me 2 pounds which is a significant amount. But they cut the small fillets (with skin) in half so when fried you got these nice sized nuggets that curled a bit. I grew up eating perch from fishing off of the Pacifica Pier so it was a nice throwback. I love the texture as it is nice and mild and has a firm yet flaky flesh texture. Fresh Water Prawns ($20ish/lb/4*) These were nice and large and about 2 nice sized bites per prawn. I think they fried these a tad too long as it was getting borderline overcooked and chewy, no significant 'pop'. They were still fine but glad I didn't get anything too expensive like lobster or crab. I think I spent a little over $35ish for the fried seafoods and I had enough food to feed 4-5 people with other sides. So I felt the value was there, which also explains the omnipresent lines here. I also got a cluster of dungeness crab and a small jar of oysters still cold to take home to make a gumbo. Both were good quality except the oysters were some of the largest I've ever seen. I had to cut em, as I'm used to smaller/medium oysters. I think this town is lucky to have such a nice resource. I'd much rather delve in this hood and get something fried than any Asian market that does the same service, but they don't season/coat anything.
