This was my first time to check out CJ's bbq. I gave it 3 stars because my family said the ribs and chicken were good. The coleslaw, potato salad, sweet potato fries and corn dog were Ok. The corn and bbq beans tasted just like they were from a can. The berry cobbler was just a bowl of berries with a few pieces of pie crust and way too sweet. The only thing I really liked was the fried zucchini, but the portion size was not worth $10. On a whole for me, disappointed. Wont be back any time soon. read more

We have passed by this place for years, but decided to stop in on our visit to Oxnard on Sunday. The inside is really not much to look at but reminds me of places I used to frequent in Texas. There were a number of big screens with a couple of games on which was good to watch during lunch. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw, which you can tell if a BBQ place is decent by these two items IMAO. When they arrived the pulled pork was in a french roll and they had sauces in the cooler to the side of the dining room so you can get them yourself. Chose the spicy (cause I like it hot), tasty sauce and tender pork. The slaw was a little less desirable and honestly to me tasted a bit like the slaw from KFC so not a good one to me. I gave it the three stars because my son ordered a burger and said it was really good, but didn't give it more because my wife did not have the same opinion of hers and said her salad was not good at all. read more

CJ's is a good place for barbecue in the area. You can get a whiff of it just by driving past the smoker billowing smoke from its chimney in the back parking lot. Although the inside is pretty plain, for the most part, the food makes up for it. FOOD: CJ's Super Special Burger: The 1LB monster of a burger is definitely for those with a big appetite. The two tender and flavorful 1/2 lb patties are accompanied by cheddar and Swiss cheese, pastrami, bacon, and BBQ sauce. You don't get much fries, but given how large this burger is, you should be good to go. 1 LB BBQ Tri-Tip w/ Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas: Decent. The slices I received were pretty thick and had a nice outer crust to them, with some showing parts of a nice smoke ring. However, without the spicy BBQ sauce from the fridge, I may have not enjoyed this as much; it had little flavor on its own. The sides were just okay. BBQ 1/2 Chicken w/ Collard Green and Candied Yams: Really good! The chicken had really good flavor and was tender; it was also pretty moist. Like the tri-tip plate, it came with garlic bread. The yams were soft and sweet, but the collard greens were average. Mac and Cheese: I thought it was pretty good and cheesy, but my family thought it was average at best. The pasta wasn't overcooked and the cheese was gooey. *Tip: Habanero Mayo + fries (or anything, really) = Really good! SERVICE: Like others, the cashier when I was here didn't appear happy to be working the day I went; he was friendly to my family, though. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. All sauces are in the fridge next to the counter. Long story short, I'd definitely come back for the burgers; the rack of ribs look really good, too. read more

Great place for takeout barbecue ordered two dinners from here and they let you select from a good list of different sides that are included. And you can order a big dinner, a medium dinner or smaller portions and still get a good selection great tasting and good service. We will be going here again. read more

Awesome customer service! I forgot my mask, and the ladies here were still nice, and helpful when assisting me from outside to take my order. I ordered the 1lb. catfish dinner, catfish was fried nicely and well seasoned. The Macaroni & cheese however was not creamy/cheesy, tasted more like noodles and butter. The yams weren't nasty, but it was missing something. If you're from the south (east coast) and have tasted real southern food do not set your expectations to high.Overall, great customer service I will definitely be coming back for some more tri tip, salute to the grill master! read more

I moved away from Oxnard 7 years ago and CJ's was one of my favorite places to eat. So naturally while I was in town, I decided to stop in. BBQ sounded perfect after a long drive in from San Diego. Was definitely disappointed during this trip -- and so was my southern boyfriend. I felt bad I dragged him here (of course nothing tops BBQ in the actual south!) This is not "southern" BBQ and wasn't even that great of whatever BBQ. The sauce they use isn't good. The mac n cheese needs serious improvement. The hot links are not actual hot links! My favorite thing was the fries and ranch lol And the restaurant I remember is completely gone -- not sure if it was a covid thing pushing them to get rid of a sit down atmosphere? But it's a shame because that was one thing I enjoyed about CJ's. It's just a front where you order and have to sit outside. Really sucks to not have that sit down experience anymore. The lady at the register seemed swamped taking orders and taking phone calls. We didn't seem to have real customer service. All in all, this was not the place I remember loving. read more

I was in the Oxnard area and came across this place while driving down the street. It is a nice small place with really good soul food cooking. I had the fried catfish, Mac and cheese, potato salad and baked beans. It was all excellent! The portion size of the sides are a bit smaller than I'd expect, but the food was delicious. The pricing of the food is moderate/high. I will be back to try some other menu items, as the taste of the food is what really got me wanting to go back again. CJ's is my go to for bbq! I'm bummed that the Ventura Location had closed but it's well worth the drive from Ventura to Oxnard!! Family joint that produces some delicious food. My all time favorite is the blackened catfish salad!! For those who don't like bbq sauce on your meats for your sandwich simply ask for the sauce on the side but if you like the sauce you'll love the sandwiches! The family and I were craving bbq so we ordered some food to go. Ordered full rack of baby back ribs, 1 lb of Tri-tip, Mac n cheese, potato salad and corn bread. The only good thing was Mac n cheese!! The ribs were god awful!! They were burnt to a crisp and the beef jerky textured meat tasted sour! The Tri-tip probably could've been good but it was soaking bbq sauce. Wish I would've known they drench it on the meat. The potato salad was watery, more like potato soup. The corn bread was drier than a saltine cracker! Total waste of money!!! read more

Amazing food! Friendly service, and a big portion of fresh and tasty food for your dollar. I had to stop by for the 2nd day in a row, after tasting their homemade potato salad and tri tip - the smoker is out in the parking lot, so you know they're making it fresh. The fried catfish is out of this world! I was thinking I should have tried grilled, but once I got a taste, I was grateful I hadn't. A couple minutes later I received a call from a number I didn't recognize (and almost didn't answer). It was the restaurant saying that a part of our order didn't make it in. I am from the South and grew up on southern cooking. I have to say CJ's in Oxnard is among the best. We had catfish and collard greens and I felt like I was back in Tennessee.
