Good local BBQ joint. At the far corner of a strip mall, sort of tucked out of the way. My local friends that referred me all really love it. I chatted with the owner who was outside at the smokers. Got several orders to go. Everyone loved their meals. I really loved the spicy buffalo wings. I like that you can get wings with the mixed meat plates. I also loved the collard greens. I have seen CJ's from the road, but was always curious to go and check it out. Glad I did! SERVICE: Went here for the first time today, pretty impressed! I got the 2 meat combo, and felt like it was priced fairly. I really liked how buffalo wings were included in the 2 meat option, there are lots of options to choose from. And lots of sides to choose from as well! Service was helpful and answered my questions. AMBIANCE: This is an order at the register and they bring your food to you restaurant, it seems like they do a lot of to-go orders as there aren't a lot of tables inside to sit at. But there is outside seating as well if you prefer that. FOOD: Food was good, I got the two meat combo: I chose Tri tip, buffalo wings and for side I chose fries, coleslaw. A bun comes with it as well. TRI TIP: This Tri tip was TENDER! The most tender I have had in Oxnard/Ventura. The bbq sauce on top is really good, but they slather it on there for you and it's a lot. I would recommend you ask for the bbq sauce on the side if you order the trip tip. --8/10 BUFFALO WINGS: The wings were average for me, nothing out of the ordinary. Other bbq places just give you white bread that is barely toasted sometimes. This was buttered and toasted to perfection. 9/10 Overall, we are definitely going here again. It's my birthday today but my dinner plans were cancelled. I wanted something I haven't had in awhile so I thought of CJ's. Called them up 30 minutes before they closed and they took my order. I ordered a full rack of beef ribs! Took of to make it there before closing and was greeted with the friendliest person that just kept a smile on. Gave me my order and told me to enjoy my food. I told him I will because it's my birthday. We started talking guessing each others ages and we were both off by 10 years. He gave a cornbread in the house. I asked his name and he said,"Chris...CJ" I didn't know that was him. Such a pleasure to meet the owner. Very personable. Reminded me of Sal at Sal's Mexican Restaurant went he was still with us and the place was open. Anyway, I got home and the ribs were the best! I asked for the sauce on the side because I don't usually use sauce on my ribs, but when I put some on...wow! It was even better! The bbq beans were great and so was the mac n cheese. I just wish my sides were bigger. As for the cornbread...so good. I ate everything except 3 ribs. I got too full. I'll be back soon for more, but I will order bigger sides. read more

It was the best experience I have had in a long time. Being active duty military is very hard to find a home like southern cooking. The service was completely outstanding. I don't do many reviews but I had to in hopes the listen and save CJ'sIt's sad when a place that was so good and an Oxnard fixture for many years goes bad I've heard rumors it was sold. This review is for 3 visits being a long time customer I was hoping it was just a unusual off days. The first visit I ordered a quart of chili large fries and beef ribs. The chili was very watered down tasted like water . Since I arrived about 11:30 and I know chili gets better as it simmers I thought well I was early and this is a first ever I'll just reduce it on my stove myself and let it go. A few weeks later I ordered the quart of chili and 2 CJs special burgers same thing with the chili and the burgers were smaller and so little bacon and pastrami we had to open them to see if they even put any on. The last visit was the breaking point we're not going back ordered the quart of chili and it was so bad had a sweet taste ! There was nothing I could do to fix it threw it out. The 1/2 chicken I don't think I can even describe effectively how bad it was. It had a burnt taste and I couldn't tell what was bone and what's was meat I couldn't even cut the breast with a steak knife I threw it out too. First off, the overall atmosphere gave be late 2010 vibes and i loved it, dont really know why, maybe it was because it was nice and sunny out, but the lady who was taking my order was very nice and respectful. I got the raspberry cheescake thingy aswell with a classic burger with a baked potato. The food came really quick, the wait was about 5-8 minutes. Right off the bat the raspberry cheesecake was DELICIOUS, it was sweet but not too sweet and it had some cakey bread, the icing wasnt too sweet either, which is great, overall just a great dessert 10/10. The burger was really good aswell, the lettuce, onions, and pickles were really fresh and the meat was TOP TIER, really juicy and just great taste 9/10. The side of baked potato came nice and hot wrapped in foil. They give u a little cup of butter and sour cream, the perfect amount. I think the phrase "you can't go home again" means that when you come back to something it may not be the same...not as good, etc. It's been at least 9 yrs since my last visit to CJ. I was in the area not knowing it was still around and it literally brought a tear to my eye knowing that I was going to have a 2 meat BBQ combo for lunch at CJ's ! The owner, who I remember, from way back took my order and that made me realize that at least at CJ nothing had changed. I bought a rack of beef ribs! Wow, delicious as ever! Every bite brought back a ton of memories from when my friends and I lived around the corner. And all things considered the meal convoy was a great value for the price. The memory of that (recent) meal makes my mouth water! I now live many miles away, and so do my friends...I'm going to tell them about my recent experience at CJ ...perhaps we can all meet here (families in tow) and have a down home BBQ meal like the old days. One note, they no longer have a dine-in option but there is outdoor seating available on a first come first serve basis...not sure the tables are specifically for CJ customers though. read more

WE got the family meal for 4 with baby back ribs, Mac and Cheese, baked beans and added Candied Yams, Baked Potato and Black Eyed Peas, The food hit the spot. Mac and Cheese was delicious, candied yams were amazing and the sauce on the tri tip was on point. Giving 4 stars because they chicken was good but nothing to write home about. This place used to be the happening place. After COVID this place seems like it never really rebounded. The sitting area is much smaller and the food quality really went down. Simply amazing barbecue. I have been here many times and drive all the way from LA just for these ribs. I have loved barbecue since I was a little kid growing up with a dad who loved to grill, way back in the 1960s and CJ's baby back ribs are as good as any I've ever had. Very meaty and tender and the sauce is to die for. They no longer have indoor seating so we ate on the spacious patio. Special shout out for the music which was fun and made the meal even more enjoyable. I am so confused. I used to come here all the time for their chicken Cesar salad. Havnt ordered in I'd say 6 months to a year but I called today to order my usual chicken CESAR salad...the girl on the phone(very nice no issues with customer service) asked what dressing I'd like and I said Cesar dressing....obviously right? She then said they don't have Cesar dressing and listed the available dressing options. I'm sorry but how are you going to have a CESAR salad on your menu...without the Cesar salad dressing...that's the whole point of the dish lmao that makes NO SENSE. Please change the name of the salad in that case bcuz then all it is is lettuce chicken croutons and Parmesan cheese which is NOT a Cesar salad if there's no Cesar dressing on it. I cannot. The quality, quantity and taste of the food is pretty good other than it was barely like warm when served. The customer service was less than impressive. We walked in as the employee was helping 2 people ahead of us. They were talking about the restaurant business. We got no greeting, or "hi, be right with you" as their discussion continued. 8minutes later they finally ordered. Still no greeting when we stepped up to order. In fact, he didn't even ask what we were going to have, he just looked at us. We ordered and the food was brought out to us. We thanked him and that was the last we saw of him until he brought us a to go bag, although we didn't need it. Ambiance was as good as an outdoor patio could be.
