Third time not a charm :o( Beware! When you place your order find out exactly what it come with and how much it costs because the menus online are outdated and so is their website. The service is wonderful and The gal who works there is an absolute doll! I really hate to bring a negative review here but I have to update from my previous one... So...I finally tried the coleslaw (the first two times we ordered from here, they were all out) it has pineapple in it ugh! Not what I expected at all. I love coleslaw (just not theirs) we couldn't eat it. Their Mac n cheese is so yummy but was a bit too buttery. The rolls that came with the order were chewy and I'm guessing because they were wrapped for too long in the foil? The way they prepare the rolls is different-they are cut in half and then "I think" they're brushed with butter! Then lightly grilled? Taste was good but the texture was ruined. Ended up in the trash. So bummed! The tri tip... no flavor except it had a weird aftertaste that freaked me out to where after eating one piece I couldn't eat any more ugh!! The half chicken was gross! And honestly the smallest half chicken we've ever been served at any restaurant-barely any meat! MAYBE 5oz tops!? On average a half roasted/baked/bbq chicken yields about 10oz's of meat.... My husband did not like the seafood gumbo. The spare ribs were good - not great All in all this was an absolute disappointment! We spent so much money on this order, purposely to have leftovers but doubt we're going to finish what didn't end up in the trash. I had high hopes for CJ's. I must say the restaurant was very clean. The service was very friendly and accommodating. The Black Eyed Peas were delicious and the green beans were southern style. The barbecue spicy sauce was very good. I ordered baby back ribs dry as I don't like a lot of sauce on my ribs. Unfortunately, they were dry and more than one way. It seemed as if they had been under a heat lamp for too long I could really pretty much only eat the meat closest to the bone. I was very disappointed in that as I do make baby back ribs often and they usually fall right off the bone. I would probably have sent them back if I bought them, but a friend was buying me lunch and I did not want to embarrass her. She had the beef ribs. I don't know how they were except very messy, but she did have a very difficult time. Cutting them with the plastic knife. We sat in a very pretty outdoor area. read more

Although, the restaurant is not what it used to be with its welcoming in-person dinning; and the wonderful interior that used to be before COVID. The food is exactly the same. For the folks complaining about the price, they don't cut the rib tip off, they give you the whole rib. Other folks cut the rib tip off, then charge you more for rib tips. The pricing was right for the quantity and quality. Ribs were perfectly smoked, mac and cheese was scrumptious and the greens were the perfect mix of tender with texture. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars is I prefer my greens to have a little more seasoning and spice level. read more

I asked for a tiny discount for there error and the lady with the glasses says its her fault but nothing she can do. I've driven right by this place many times and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich which was quite large and very tasty. It was chock filled with large chunks of white meat chicken and smothered in a tasty barbeque sauce. For a very reasonable $9.99 they do include a choice of one side, which unfortunately, I thought was disappointingly small in size. The place does not have any inside seating, but they do some have tables available for outside dining. Of course, due to the pandemic, they were all marked off with yellow tape, so it's basically a take out only place right now. You can call your order in in advance to avoid having to wait around while they prepare your food. read more

Kind of long so bare with me: I recently started eating meat again and I have been traveling far and wide, embarking on journeys to find the most tender of meats. I will admit, I am picky and some of you may call this being "entitled" while others may consider it having "too high of an expectation" but I believe everyone should be picky to an extent because that dictates your experience. CJ's Barbecue is hands down the absolute WORST BBQ I have yet to eat. Upon entering the parking lot, I was excited because I was met with multiple grills sitting out in the parking lot cascading an exuberant amount of smoke with this inviting delicious, good ol' Barbeque aroma. This was far from the case so don't be fooled by this! I feel I have to mention this, as it may not be important to most but to those who want the convenience of exiting their car and walking right up to the entrance which you think is the door facing the parking lot, you will not get that here. You will be met with multiple signs leading you to the way of the entrance which almost wraps around the entire facility and thank goodness they have these signs, or I can assure you, we all would be lost. Upon entering the establishment, I was quickly greeted in a fashion that was somewhat dismissive. The best way I could put this is if you showed up to a place Three Minutes before closing and they're annoyed and bothered you showed up considering they're practically closed, that's how I felt but, in my case, it was midday. After placing my order (which I was a bit weary of because I couldn't choose how I wanted my meat cooked) I looked inside their dessert display as I thought about getting something sweet, I mean who doesn't like sweets! Literally a few seconds into browsing their selection of desserts, a little cockroach comes crawling out from underneath their pecan pies. I wanted to walk out but I had forgot I already paid so I took a few steps back, stood there and waited. My order was beef ribs and tri-tip. Beef Ribs: I was greeted by overly burnt ribs, I mean charred like how Chucky was at the end of the 1988 film Childs Play. One rib was burnt so bad, it didn't even have meat on it and the other remaining ribs, let me put it like this, Beef Jerky would have been a lot tastier and more tender. If someone would have brought me these, I would have immediately thrown these away but the fact I paid for them, is what made me attempt to salvage what little meat I could. Tri-Tip: If you have a friend who hosts a BBQ once every three months and they have tri-tip, you're going to expect it to be average and that's exactly how this tasted, Basic. I was hoping it would be moist and tender but how can you achieve that when the tri-tip is cooked well done. The barbeque sauce barely saved this tri-tip because without it, there would have been no flavor. Again, you're better off buying a pack of Beef Jerky, any flavor of Beef Jerky would be more flavorful, moist and tender than this tri-tip. The only thing they would have in common is the chewiness and even at that, the Jerky might be less. Maybe I went on a bad day but to be served food looking like it was scavenged off a battlefield, how could I want to attempt to try it again. Who knows, you might have a better experience than I, so in the end, I can only leave you my experience and hopefully you have a better one but BE WARNED! read more

My roommate is from Texas where barbecue is plentiful and extremely cheap, so he's very picky about the quality we get out here. Ordered a sampler from CJ's last night. Thought I was getting 3 1/2 sections of baby back ribs, tri tip and hot links. I ended up getting 3 individual ribs and a bunch of tiny cut up pieces of hot link...I have no idea how many links it started out as. Everything was mediocre at best, and cold. The ribs and tri tip were chewy and the links, because they were cut up, had dried out. You can't cut up a link and leave it sitting because it dries up quickly. Links need to be served whole. Totally not worth $30. Based on this, I won't be going back simply because there's better BBQ in Oxnard. read more

We picked up a 'three meat combo' to go. One beef rib, three pork ribs, and some cut up chicken along with two sides. $32. The beef rib had the texture of a super ball. The dog loved it. The pork ribs were okay. The chicken was very dry with an odd texture. Along with being expensive and not very good- I will pass on future visits. read more

The meat was swimming in bbq sauce so much that I couldn't really taste the tri tip or pulled pork. I thought the bbq sauce and potato salad were too sweet. We moved here almost two years ago and have been looking for the best bbq around Oxnard and finally tried CJ's Bbq but in fortunately for the $70.00 worth of food the only thing I found worth eating was the onion rings, the beef ribs were so tough I couldn't even eat them, we also purchased the sourdough melt which I had to recook at home and found out it uses the same size burger patty as a regular burger and because it uses sourdough bread and it's almost twice the size as a burger bun I ended up redistributing everything onto one side of bread and the other went in the trash, I asked for Mac and cheese for the side but said it wouldn't be ready for another hour and a half so I got fries which were pretty much inedible because they were cold and when I put them in the air fryer they got too hard so in the trash they went. It is a shame because we were trying to find out favorite but we will most likely not return to CJ's Bbq! read more

Smells great inside, like a BBQ joint should. Pulled Pork Sandwich comes with one side, I had the Mac n Cheese. The sandwich was ok but too fatty! Pulled pork is fatty but when served should have the majority of the fat removed. It was also cut into chunks which I didn't like. I prefer the meat to be "pulled" not cut. Unless it was the "money muscle" which should be served very differently. I also wish I had a nice round bun instead of a french style roll. The Mac n Cheese was good. Not sure what kind of pasta it was but it was similar to small ribbons or something. Maybe a more traditional pasta would have been better but the flavor was good. While I gave them 3 stars, you may like it. It wasn't terrible. The place did ha e a good crowd at lunch. read more

I'm a big time foodie that LOVES mom and pop spots. We got the Catfish, red beans and rice, collard greens, cornbread and potato meat skins. The catfish is probably the "best" around between Oxnard, Ventura and Camarillo! The cornbread was super warm and moist and a big portion. I just have to say this was as close to growing up comfort food as it gets. It is definitely a place to eat at if ever in Oxnard with a large selection menu. I've eaten at almost every place that serves catfish and this place serves large cuts of fish and seasoning/fry it really well. People will not be disappointed. Get your foodie on! After passing CJ's for a year along Victoria, we decided to give it a try. Glad we did; now we know. The food isn't bad, and it is genuine. However, the Tri-Tip was tasty, but tough. So upon a closer examination I saw that they don't know how to cut it. Hint for you, you always cut a Tri-Tip against the grain of the meat, not with it. Hint No. 2; before you cut it and serve it, you should "rest" the meat. The baby back ribs were not prepped. Tasty, yes, and honestly, I suck at cooking ribs, but these needed more prep before cooking. I don't know how the really good places do their ribs, but I would recommend that you figure it out. The BBQ Chicken was great however, and how they earned 2 stars instead of 1. The salads and beans were also better than average. I don't know if they make it or just purchase the potato salad or the cole slaw, but they are quite good. This all said, odds are I'll give it another try some day, but this next time will be take-out since they don't really have comfortable places to sit. read more

Usually I get the tritip sandwich, but I wanted something different, so I tried Tritip Nachos, and a side of their delicious sweet potatoes. So yummy. Next time, I will add the greens. CJ's is a good place for barbecue in the area. You can get a whiff of it just by driving past the smoker billowing smoke from its chimney in the back parking lot. Although the inside is pretty plain, for the most part, the food makes up for it. FOOD: CJ's Super Special Burger: The 1LB monster of a burger is definitely for those with a big appetite. The two tender and flavorful 1/2 lb patties are accompanied by cheddar and Swiss cheese, pastrami, bacon, and BBQ sauce. You don't get much fries, but given how large this burger is, you should be good to go. 1 LB BBQ Tri-Tip w/ Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas: Decent. The slices I received were pretty thick and had a nice outer crust to them, with some showing parts of a nice smoke ring. However, without the spicy BBQ sauce from the fridge, I may have not enjoyed this as much; it had little flavor on its own. The sides were just okay. BBQ 1/2 Chicken w/ Collard Green and Candied Yams: Really good! The chicken had really good flavor and was tender; it was also pretty moist. Like the tri-tip plate, it came with garlic bread. The yams were soft and sweet, but the collard greens were average. Mac and Cheese: I thought it was pretty good and cheesy, but my family thought it was average at best. The pasta wasn't overcooked and the cheese was gooey. *Tip: Habanero Mayo + fries (or anything, really) = Really good! SERVICE: Like others, the cashier when I was here didn't appear happy to be working the day I went; he was friendly to my family, though. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. We have passed by this place for years, but decided to stop in on our visit to Oxnard on Sunday. The inside is really not much to look at but reminds me of places I used to frequent in Texas. There were a number of big screens with a couple of games on which was good to watch during lunch. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw, which you can tell if a BBQ place is decent by these two items IMAO. When they arrived the pulled pork was in a french roll and they had sauces in the cooler to the side of the dining room so you can get them yourself. Chose the spicy (cause I like it hot), tasty sauce and tender pork. The slaw was a little less desirable and honestly to me tasted a bit like the slaw from KFC so not a good one to me. I gave it the three stars because my son ordered a burger and said it was really good, but didn't give it more because my wife did not have the same opinion of hers and said her salad was not good at all. read more
