Going through a pile of unearthed coffee punch/stamp cards, I remembered Citizen fondly. It sure had been awhile and finally revisited back on 4/3/21. No problem getting street parking. Masked up and joined the socially distanced line to place my order. I ordered a 16 oz mocha and Croque Madame waffle. Previously in years past, I always ordered crepes. I remember escaping here for lunch and enjoying coffee and savory crepes when I worked in Belltown. While I waited outside on the sidewalk, I noticed that Citizen had extensive outdoor seating and an adjacent beer garden. Great way to pivot during the pandemic. A server handed me my mocha first, took a sip, thankfully it was spot on. This was followed minutes later with another gracious server handing me my takeout brunch item. It was a beautiful spring afternoon, I ended up dining on my car trunk under a blossoming tree. A blue corn buttermilk waffle with generous sliced ham, gruyere, arugula, bechamel sauce, and an egg. Big sweet grapes as garnish. Delightful! It is always a treat to revisit a place with fond memories and find that it still exists, has efficient and friendly service, consistent mochas, and tasty food. THEY NO LONGER OFFER CREPES. Under new management and crepes have been substituted with waffles. The waffle was decent and my boyfriend was pleased with the Farmer's Breakfast he ordered. The coffee was extremely subpar. I ordered a 16oz (with an additional double shot) latte and it came out looking and tasting like milk. I ordered an espresso shot (with an additional double shot) and the server brought a half filled four ounce cup. When I inquired if it was a double shot she looked me dead in the face and said "yeah, so it's a quad". If you're an espresso drinker, I highly recommend you go somewhere else. (Or maybe just avoid Saturday's around noon) All in all, we will probably be back because the food and atmosphere were enjoyable, but will steer clear of the cafe menu. read more

Meh part: they didn't allow me to pick a different item for substitute (for free), when I completely lost the appetite for the same dish... 2. The waiting staff wore a mask, but it was dangling on her chin the whole time, NOT covering a single bit of her nose or her mouth (read: the mask was useless), even when she was leaning OVER us to put down the dishes and talking to us at the same time (read: spraying saliva from top down, NO blocker). My review may seem mean, but let me clarify: I rarely write mean reviews on Yelp. During COVID, I try my best to be supportive and forgiving. I understand it's hard, and I adjusted my standard accordingly. But today's experience not only killed my appetite (this maybe exaggerated since I still finished half of my new salad, the hairless substitute), but raised my concern of dining here in the future, if the pandemic ever gets worse. We had a fabulous Sunday brunch here! It was a very rainy morning but we found some dry covered seats after we ordered and grabbed a number at the front. Someone came over and quickly turned on the heat lamp for us as well. With my winter coat and layers, I didn't even feel cold! What was shocking to me was the speed of service. I was that person who got a salted caramel latte and a mimosa and before I could have a sip of both, our food arrived. Both drinks were delicious. The salted caramel latte wasn't on their printed menu, but it was a special written inside. I got the chili verde burrito (without eggs) and it was delicious. So flavorful and the tortilla itself was amazing. I also split the pear waffle with my friend. It has a wonderful mix of sweetness from the pears and whip cream mixed with some fabulous flavors. Ordering is done by ToastTab, so depending on your preference/comfort, that can expedite the ordering process. I got the tofu scramble ($14.95 plus tax -- comes vegan by default) which comes with lemongrass tofu cubes, various veggies (spinach, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, caramelized onions), black beans, and a choice of toast/tortillas (I got whole wheat -- the bread looked grilled, which was a nice touch). My dish came out in about 10 minutes on a paper plate. They provide plastic utensils at the table. The food was tasty, though I couldn't really detect lemongrass on the tofu. I'd give the dish a 3.5/5 But I'm docking a star from the overall rating -- moving my overall to 2.5, but Yelp doesn't allow half-stars -- because of borderline deceptive/unjustifiable gratuity charges. They automatically tack on a 20% service charge (what was the point of ordering by phone?), then prompt you to leave an *additional* gratuity -- the nerve of set things up that way. Honestly very underwhelming. They do have a lot of indoor and outdoor seating which is great. They have outdoor games, fire pits and more. I heard their cocktails are supposed to be good. We came for brunch and we got burritos, a savory waffle and the turkey jam sandwich. The food wasn't flavorful at all. We also ordered lavender matcha which tasted like plain matcha. COVID review: Came here for breakfast on a weekend and it was pretty busy. Even though there were a decent amount of people, Citizen has a large outdoor space and everyone was well spaced out. To place an order, you send one person in from your table to order everything and then the workers bring your food and drinks to you based on your table number. I ordered a frozen watermelon margarita slushie that was very tasty and perfect for the summer day. For food, I enjoyed their huevos rancheros and liked the sauce it came with. Wow! This place was a busy spot for breakfast this morning! We were lucky to get a table and enjoy the table service. There was about a 30 minute wait for food, but our ice teas and umbrella kept us cool while we waited. We had hoped our yogurt parfait would come quickly, since it required no cooking. Alas, it came with the rest of the food. His breakfast sandwich was okay once he added hot sauce. My avocado toast was okay once I added salt and pepper. Not sure if it was worth the wait or the price. The waffles looked good... so perhaps we just missed ordering their signature items. Despite our dining in, everything was disposable. Compostable plates and yogurt cup, recyclable cups for our tea, and landfill bound water cups and utensils. While there were some bins to separate items, I also saw some bins where everything was comingled - meaning it's all landfill bound. If single use is the only option, perhaps Citizen could consider moving to 100% compostable to reduce complexity and ensure items are disposed of correctly. The service was great with our server checking in on us frequently and being very friendly. The only thing that I hope they fix is there outside carpets which are just begging to trip someone. They curls up about a half foot which is definitely enough to notice. I would recommend some strong glue or even drilling the edge down (with how curled it is it might need that). read more

They let us know we can stay to finish whatever we order even after closing. There was many different seating options but we found an inside nook with windows and a fan. We both ordered the "Frose" which is essentially a blended margarita with Rose wine instead of tequila. We both loved it. The alcohol seemed strong and the drink had a great citrus flavor as well. We both said we would have ordered one or maybe two more if the restaurant wasn't closed. It just feels good to be there. The service was quick and friendly, bartenders laughing at patrons' bad jokes and rolling with the punches. They had a decent selection of beers, though the winner was the Ten Pin Pineapple Hefe. They have QR codes on the tables for menus, but the menu is for Lazy Susan, a restaurant a few blocks away. They charge an extra $5 for delivery to Citizen, and charge $13 for a plate of kimchi fries. I had been really looking forward to trying their brunch since I found them on Instagram and they sure did not disappoint! We got there early (around 9am) on a Saturday and were seated right away. I had the cowboy casserole (delicious and huge) a bit spicy which is just how I like it. My friends and I ate here during our visit because it was close to our hotel and the menu looked really good. I ordered the grilled cheese with a side of bacon, a peach mimosa, and a strawberry lemonade. My drinks were good my sandwich was fine. My friend didn't like her cuban roasted sandwich and my other friend didn't like the combo of the apple smoked bacon. Good food served on paper plates! I thought this was interesting, and allowed for quick turnover of tables. Drinks took forever, and came out long after our food. We had to flag a server as we had tickets to a show at Climate Pledge Arena and were afraid we weren't going to make it. Luckily we were able to checkout quickly and get on our way. The food and drink were satiating, and parking nearby was easy to find (and free on Sunday!) I had the pesto crepe and my friend had the huevos rancheros. We both agreed the food was very good. We had a server who gave some good pointers and recos on how to order. We enjoyed the music they were playing on a rainy Sunday. My experience today was not good due to a hair being in my food and the way it was handled. It was toward the end of my meal but definitely stopped me from finishing the rest of my potatoes and eggs. I told the server there was a hair just to let them know and she responded "I'll let the kitchen know". She didn't apologize or say anything else. When she brought out the check nothing was taken off. I did not expect or need a comp but did think an apology would have been appropriate. The Henry scramble I ordered was $14. Instead of beans I asked for avocado and the total for that entree was $17.45. While they gave a generous amount of avocado (as they should for a $3.40 upcharge), the total entree wasn't the best value for the amount of food. The chorizo burrito my husband ordered was tasty and better value. Would get that next time. We also ordered a side bacon and it wasn't anything special. I would skip that next time. Went there on a Saturday morning. Sat outside on a table with the inbuilt heater. This was the highlight. We ordered a mimosa ($11) and mocha ($5). The former was good, the mocha was below average. We ordered an avocado toast ($10) which was pretty tiny and bland tasting, just a slim slice of toast with guacamole smothered on it. The spicy tofu taco was slightly better but could have had more better marinated tofu. Serving size was in the smaller side for price ($15). They shadily add a 20% tip which you cannot reduce and have the audacity to prompt for additional tip. We all ordered together; Three of us got waffles. I got mine food within 10/15 minutes -waffle was overdone. The other two got theirs 20 minutes after me, one was perfect, the other slightly under cooked. The burrito took forever but was good. I suggest Citizen rework their kitchen or delivery process. Here is why I knocked off two stars- I ordered avocado toast and my toast was super hard! I couldn't cut it with plastic knife but truth be told it was so hard that I couldn't have even broken into it with proper silverware! The second reason why I knocked off stars was because at the time of paying they did NOT tell me 20% gratuity (service charge) was included so I added an extra 15% to my tab. I didn't notice the service charge while paying. So I paid 35% tip for them to bring me food because the rest was done by us. We place the order at the counter, picked up our own plastics, napkins and condiments before heading to table and than bussed our own table. Common, have the decency to tell people when card ja run that 20% service charge is included and if they want to pay extra there is a spot. If you don't tell us and we pay extra that feels a bit like cheating and fraud. So overall, decent breakfast! Looks like it would be fun place for evening vibe with the beer garden look.
