What happened to the charcoal chicken??? This wasn't overcooked but was flavorless and dry. The shrimp and cod fritters were the same as always . The special's looked great but I was dying for that chicken and I'll never order it again. The staff in the past have been rushed and stand offish. Not the staff today. This place did not live up to the high Yelp rating and was more than a bit disappointing. The main problem was the service. It took forever until a waitress brought us menus and forever for every additional step (getting food, getting a drink, getting leftovers boxed, getting a check). This wasn't just slow, it was ridiculous. Food was tasty but nothing to go out of the way for. This is obviously a popular place during lunch but they either need more wait staff or to train the ones they have to be more efficient. What a pleasant surprise! My favorite restaurant was closed because they took vacation and I did a quick Yelp search and took a chance on this restaurant. I probably would had walk by it because it looks like a small takeout place but they have a beautiful bar setup (wine and beer only) with few tables. Worst place I've been to... I love portugués cuisine and I had heard that the chicken was good. So I went to check out the place. I don't judge places on appearance but here you get what you see. A disappointment. We ordered a full chicken with rice and potato chips. After a 40 minute wait for the food to come out I was presented with a cold plate of potato chips and rice. ( I was looking forward to those chips) such a disappointment. A couple minutes later the chicken came out....It was warm at best. Overly seasoned but flavorful.... I've never been served a cold plate of food. I'm not the type of person to send anything back so I just let it go. Service was poor. The only time the waitress came to out table was to take our order and to drop off the food. She never came back to see how our meals were, to refill our beverages or to bring the check. When I went up to the counter to pay the check I couldn't get anyone's attention since they were to busy bad mouthing the previous customers. At the suggestion of other Yelpers I ordered the chicken with the sautéed shrimp and garlic sauce with a side of the sliced Portuguese style potatoes, Yum! I dipped the thin crisp Portuguese potato chips in the garlic sauce basting the shrimp and chicken and I have to say 5 days later I'm still thinking how delicious it was! A few Yelpers mentioned the salad and how good the Vinaigrette was, I must agree, I really thought the salad and the dressing were outstanding, it's an odd component of a meal for me to compliment but I must say it was that good! Even when it's a little off, you can still get a delicious charcoal-roasted chicken with a tray of fries and rice (we Portuguese love to combine starches) for under $10, with some bread thrown in for good measure. With a bottle of wine, it makes a great picnic lunch, and yes, they do (a lot of) take out. Almost everything you can get here is grilled. Grilled salmon, cod, veal, pork, beef. They occasionally make some specials, which are on the board. If you're looking for a more intimate dining experience, ask to be seated in the back room, which is very Portuguese looking, and generally cooler and much quieter than the front room. The front room is where the blue collar crowd come to eat, and the back is for couples and families, generally speaking. Desserts are erratic here, and the bread can sometimes be stale. I just ate my first lunch at this local restaurant. I ordered the pot of clams,mussels,shrimp and lobster in a flavorful tomato broth. It was fresh, plentiful and robust with flavor. House bread served on the side was as fresh as could be and was a fabulous compliment to dunk in the delicious broth. The meal was so large that I stuffed myself silly and still had enough to bring home for a second meal the next day. I can't wait to go back with friends but might wait until the weather is a little warmer. Fantastic rotisserie chicken! I love this place, it's like sitting at someone's kitchen. The owner is your host and she is preparing you her traditional dishes. I enjoy watching the ownwers (husband & wife) cooking these authentic portugeuse dishes and having my taste buds greatly satisfied. Prices are reasonable and the portions are generous! You can almost miss this restaurant on Spring Street, but don't! Great authentic food, served by a helpful waitress, and a surprisingly low bill. I would recommend the chicken and the shell fish dish my husband had was excellent with succulent mussels and very tasty sauce. French fries are great, although visit (which will be soon) I will try the rice and fish. We ate lunch there, but the portions were big enough for a large dinner. Friendly service. Really feels like one of those places that Guy Fieri might visit on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. It's got a real local feel. Loved the olives set out with the bread basket. Bread was actually pretty good as well. Some sort of dense whole wheat variety. I unfortunately ordered the wrong item off the menu. I got the wild cod. It arrived at the table and hadn't been de-boned. It was my fault for not asking as I'm used to establishments that serve filets and not whole fish. (It did not have a head thank gosh!) I took a couple bites and it was fishy. I was more turned off by all the bones though and kind of scared that I might chew on one, cut my mouth or swallow it on accident. I quickly gave up and instead ate the buttery, garlicky and perfectly cooked i.e. not mushy broccoli and the also-soaked-in-butter boiled potatoes. Both were good, but I left the restaurant hungry. My husband ordered the rotisserie chicken (order this!!!) and it was great. Portions are large and meals are reasonably priced. The restaurant has a more casual pizza-parlor like anteroom and a more formal dining room in the back. It holds about 10-12 tables and all were taken during our visit. Good sign, right? Stumbled upon this place while driving back from Tuthilltown Distillery and the West Point campus over a long weekend. The food is amazing! The ambiance and service is lacking though. We ordered the grilled calamari and the roasted chicken. These dishes were full of flavor and very tasty. I will warn you the grilled calamari is not for the faint of heart: you will get the tentacles and whole calamari bodies on your plate. For us, it was such a delight to get more than just a calamari filet. As for the roasted chicken, I could have had that for days and not been sick of it.
