I wanted to try the viral fig matcha. I was anticipating a line, but there was only 1 other person in the store when I got there. It had a very chill vibe, and I even got to sit and do some work while I enjoyed my drink. I think I'm just used to socal matcha's but this wasn't life changing. It was a good drink overall, but definitely one I'd recommend mixing first before drinking. I'm not a mixer, I like to enjoy the layers separately and together, but by the time I was mostly done with the matcha, the fig cream had an entirely different flavor in my straw and I had no matcha to pair it with. One thing I appreciated was that this drink was not sweet. If you like a sweet drink, definitely get it more sweet (not regular sweet).
I came here after my friend recommended it and was shocked that my drink ended up being almost $11 but I kinda get it now. I ordered the Double Hojicha with Mochi and less sugar. I normally chug my drinks but there's a lot of mochi and it's super filling so it feels like I'm getting a huge dessert rather than an expensive drink. Would definitely come back!
First I must admit that my partner waited in that Choji line for half an hour before bringing me this fig matcha latte as a peace offering after a little spat, which immediately made the drink feel a little more special. But I also don't want to engage in stolen valor as I did not myself expend any time in that line. After all the hype for this fig matcha latte though I did not think it was any better than many other matcha drinks I've had. I think the matcha element of the drink was the best part. The boba was very mid, could never hold a candle to the likes of the boba at Xin Fu Tang. The fig cream added a nice sweetness but the flavor was much too subtle for me. In a blind taste test I would never know there was any fig in this. The dehydrated fig on top felt like it was just decorative. I took a few bites of it and ultimately ended up tossing it. So overall, tasty matcha drink, with mid boba and not at all waiting in any kind of line for.
More like 2.5 stars. The viral fig matcha latte videos brought me here. I decided on the Hojicha Latte option instead ($8.50 + 0.75 oat milk), unsweetened; with fig cream. The cold foam cream is medium sweet with a nice light fig (I guess?) flavor. From other videos (Fig Matcha Latte) I decided on an unsweetened latte - that was a good choice. However I tasted the Hojicha flavor only within the first or second sip & then none at all. Tried using my straw & tasting each layer separately, but still no roasted tea notes. Maybe their package of tea powder oxidized? Maybe I should have asked for the extra Hojicha latte scoop (but WHY pay more for flavor that you're supposed to already get?) The oatmilk was room temp/warm at the bottom of the drink, but there still wasn't any tea flavor in it! The drink was better around the top with the cold foam & ice. It was super easy to drink & I was finishing it quickly. But I realized that's because there was a lot of ice in it (don't think there's an option for ice levels on the kiosk). With 1/2 drink left, I even discarded (carefully around the $$ cold foam) 8-10 pieces of ice & there were still around 8 pieces in the cup. The fruit on top is actually freeze-dried (am picturing those bags of freeze dried fruit from the Asian Market or maybe a CostCo (west coast). It didn't have much flavor, cardboard-ish. Maybe a tiny bit more when I took it out and let it comes to room temperature. Disappointed because I really like figs, but they don't have the fresh fruit here. My recommendation would be to buy the Fig Cream by itself (if they sell it) & top off your own matcha or coffee latte at home. The shop is more of a to-go environment. There's a nice L-shaped bench along the window but it's not a space for work or meetings. The staff is really quick & focused! Laid-back environment. Appreciate the details in the decor - kiosk cord keeper box, small raised side tables on the bench, labubu's displayed up high. But as far as my drink, the depth of flavor for a $8.50 - $10 drink wasn't there. There were a lot of people coming in for the fig latte, but also a lot of Matcha and other fruit tea orders - and not only NYU students, other adults, a European couple, a young group in suits, guy from the gym..
Honestly the matcha here was quite delicious. But as with most matcha flavored drinks, the strawberry was the star of the drink and it was just a hint of matcha. For a mostly boba style tea shop, this was a delicious drink though. Was a bit disappointed by how many menu items they were out of. We were super excited to try the fig cream matcha and the banana pudding matcha. But both were sold out :( They had the matchas made pretty quickly! And the presentation and cups were cute and easy use. Place is small and cute, not much place to sit as with most nyc boba shops. Would go again for a yummy boba style drink. Also would wanna try a non-flavored latte to check out the actual matcha taste next time :) Overall 7.6/10 for a yummy flavored drink. But 5-6/10 for a strongly matcha tasting drink

Banana pudding matcha was the perfect mixture of banana and matcha flavor. I liked that there were chunks of banana in each sip. Only downside was that service was kind of slow. They seemed to be doing orders in groups, so the two other orders waiting in front of us got their drinks at the same time as us. They looked like they've been waiting a while before us and seemed a little irritated that their drinks weren't finished yet. We were the last order and it took 15 minutes from when we ordered to when we got them. The other times I've been here there wasn't a line at all though and it was fine. Seating inside is limited and ordering is easy to do on the kiosk.
Dare I say the best matcha place in NYC? The matcha is good with or without flavors (also got the regular latte another time). I would recommend to make a stop here! Only negative was that they really add a lot of ice, so the actual amount of matcha in the cup isn't that much, but maybe that's how they get the flavor to shine? Overall, love this spot. Not many places to sit though.

They have a couple of self service machines, which makes ordering faster. They had options for unsweetened, less sweet, and regular. I got less sweet, not knowing if it referred to the amount of cream topping or matcha base. It was for the later. I wished I'd gotten unsweetened instead because I found the drink to be too sweet. Anyway, I did enjoy the fig cream and appreciate the uniqueness and variety of the drink offerings.
My review is based on only one visit and one drink. After watching a TikTok video on this Korean spot, I bookmarked it for a future NYC visit and today was the day. Upon entering Choji, it is a super tiny cramped space. You will be shoulder to shoulder with everyone like you're in an elevator. Line up and order at one of the kiosks. No tables, just a few wooden blocks against the wall for you to sit at. It is more like a grab and go. I am a hardcore matcha lover. The menu is 90% matcha drinks. Shockingly, I decided on their seasonal Banana Pudding Hojicha. Lol. I usually order it with oat milk but when I saw that the alternative lactose milk was at no charge I went for that instead. Drinks be hella expensive these days, just trying to save a few $$ when I can. And guess what, my drink still came out to $9. And now for the taste...IT WAS FRICKIN GOOD. Hojicha flavor came through strong (nutty) and the banana pudding on top reminds me of Magnolia's. This is a dessert in a cup and it took me two days to finish. I had to put half of it in my fridge when I got home. Please note that there are NO restrooms available. I had to run to other businesses nearby and still no luck. I was dying and had to make a pit stop at my mom's apartment instead. That's NYC for ya.
If you're looking for a matcha spot with a vibrant array of specialty items, I would say that Choji is definitely the spot. Choji offers a variety of specialty items that you might not find in other parts of manhattan, especially not on one menu. One of the first things you'll notice about Choji is really the sheer variety of specialty drinks on the menu. From banana pudding matcha lattes to creme brulée and fig cream matcha, the menu reads more like a dessert café than a traditional tea house. These are drinks you won't find all in one place anywhere else in the city, and that uniqueness is a major part of the cafes appeal. I love being able to come in and having so many options for my cravings on that day. And the best part is that each drink is actually good, each crafted to balance well with the matcha. If you're visiting Choji expecting a traditional, ceremonial-grade matcha experience, you might be slightly disappointed. The matcha quality here is definitely not as good as other ceremonial matcha locations. And that is being that many of the drinks here are sweetened, flavored, and layered with cream or fruit, which means the matcha quality you're tasting isn't the same as a classic tea-house pour. That is however, not to say that the matcha quality here is poor. Using high quality matcha for sweetened specialty drinks would just ultimately be a waste of a high quality matcha's use. I believe they used matcha that was the perfect balance for the drinks they craft here. Overall, my friends and I really enjoyed all the drinks here.

AMAZING service. a stranger knocked my drink off the table before i could try a sip. it was a matcha massacre. the poor employee came out with a mop to clean up the mess in such a tight space. i felt SO bad. i apologized for the inconvenience but he said, "don't apologize for the girl's mistake." the kind sir (i wish i knew his name) made me a new drink!!! the fig cream matcha was delicious, not too sweet. the highest compliment from an asian LOL
I've been seeing this spot trending all over my TikTok feed with their beautiful and unique matcha beverages so I of course had to see what all the hype was about and this may be in my Top 5 NYC matchas! The Fig Cream Matcha is unlike any matcha I've had and this is the only place I've seen make it in NYC. The cream is rich and you can really taste the fig but the matcha quality is still there. I also tried their Banana Pudding Matcha and Banana Pudding Hojicha which were like a desert and drink combined. What I loved most was that there's no graininess at the bottom, so you know they whisk it very well. They were super busy on a Sunday afternoon. I think social media grew their popularity.
The tea was so fragrant, it was amazing! They have very creative flavors, lots of matcha and non-matcha options. I'd love to come back and try more of their drinks. I liked both the matcha fig cream and the jasmine matcha cream. It was very crowded inside. It's a small store, but it's very popular, so it takes some time for them to make your drinks.
WOW I was so incredibly impressed by Choji! I had seen and heard of them from several people I know and was itching to try their matcha. I came in during Memorial Day weekend, and it luckily wasn't too packed. The store is pretty small with limited seating (and no tables), but my friend and I thankfully snagged a bench. I ordered the Fig Cream Matcha, which was delicious. Their ratio of matcha to milk is very well done; the matcha is not too diluted, and the flavor comes through very well. I went with less sweet, which was also perfect. I will say that the fig cream doesn't necessarily taste like fig, but it was very yummy! My boyfriend similarly loved his Matcha Latte, and my friend enjoyed her Double Matcha. In general, I really enjoyed my experience here! I will definitely be back. read more

Super friendly staff made drinks with care. Tried strawberry matcha and banana pudding and they were both delicious. Just enough sweetness and creamy. Can't wait to try some other flavors. Cute shop with 2 kiosk and some seats. read more

Yum!! I got their fig cream matcha (less sweet with oat milk)-- one of their more popular drinks. It's creamy much like an einspanner and more dessert-like in nature. I like how smooth and milky the drink tastes. As for the fig flavor, I don't really taste too much of it except for a slight sweetness. read more
I stopped by on a weekday night, and I was able to quickly place an order on a digital kiosk after taking a look at the large menus on the wall. The wait for my drink wasn't too unreasonable for the amount of people sitting in the tea shop. The Matcha Fig Cream's fig cream was just a bit gritty, but I enjoyed the drink overall. The balance of the drink wasn't perfect; I wish the fig flavor was stronger and the matcha latte was richer. read more

Today I stopped by here to try it out and got Mochi Cloud Bubble Milk Tea, the taste of the milk tea was only ok. The flavor of the tea was not that strong in either the mochi cloud bubble milk tea or the regular bubble milk tea. I actually prefer the bubble milk tea at Wanpo right across the street from it. read more

genuinely one of my fav matcha spots in the city now! the fig cream is top tier and a flavor combo that really sets them apart from classic flavor combos you see with matcha. they use A LOT per drink so it ends up being worth the price which is $9+. fig cream actually tastes very fresh and flavorful and love that you can adjust your sweetness- i thought light sweet was perfect. can't wait to try their other drinks!! it was very busy but service super fast and minimal seating so it's best for grab n go. read more
my friends all ordered different drinks. their matcha and hojicha were good. however, mine came too sweet even though i asked for less sugar. my friend got full sugar and tasted less sweet than mine. so beware that the drinks are inconsistent. the wait time was also a bit egregious since it's hyped right now read more

Never try fig matcha before so went to try .. is creamy & thick strong matcha flavor too ..not bad pretty good matcha drink .. probably will com back try cream brûlée matcha next time read more
Got the viral fig matcha and it tasted so gooood. Best way to describe the taste is like a fig newton. However, the price is kinda crazzzzy for a small matcha. If you come here get the larger size so it's worth the money. They have other flavors that sound good so I will be back for sure! Wait is kinda long, there's so much people in and out so keep that in mind. read more

Wow the matcha here is something else. Their drink are so green it had me wondering when i'd be going to sleep that night. The matcha quality is great and they have a variety of flavors. I heavily reccomend their fig matcha latte (I haven't seen another matcha place selling it so far either). Their banana pudding latte was also good, the banana was fresh and not soggy plus they give a bigger cup for it so they don't skimp on matcha. Service is kiosk and there's little seating inside. Overall great drinks and i'm already a regular. read more

tried the fig cream matcha and it was my easily one of my favorite drinks i've had. super creamy and the fig was a really nice compliment to the matcha. i really liked the drink selection - lots of unique flavors (e.g., creme brulee matcha). when you get inside, you order at the machine and they call your name once complete. there are options to adjust the sweetness level which i really liked. we did have to wait a bit for our drinks because it's a local spot for NYU students. read more

Huge menu selection of unique drinks including milk teas, matcha, hojicha, fruit tea, and non caffeinated drinks! Your order at kiosks and there is a small seating area for you as you wait or to enjoy your order. The matcha is good cafe quality (not crazy bitter and astringent), alternative milk doesn't seem to be extra, and you can select for it to be unsweetened, which was perfect for my Fig Matcha! A pretty large drink too given the price point is the same as other cafes in the city! I want to come back already because of how unique some of the drinks are and with how great the hours are! read more
