Cha-An came recommended from a friend so made sure to visit! The exterior door was a little hidden but not difficult to locate. Immediately upon entering you'll go up a flight of stairs and be greeted by the hostess for seating. It was fairly quiet when I arrived so seating was immediate. Only prepared for the sesame dessert prior to arrival so took a look through the menu for their other spectacular and highly recommended dessert: the matcha shaved ice. The sesame dessert didn't have as much sesame in it as I had anticipated -- I would've loved sesame on sesame on sesame (for example, I was expecting sesame in the ice cream as opposed to vanilla). My friends really like afternoon tea and since we haven't been to an asian-inspired afternoon tea place were were excited to try this one out. I had a group of 5 and we booked a couple months in advance since we were a larger group. One of us is also gluten free so I relayed that when we booked and they were able to accommodate that. We came in during the spring, so they had their seasonal spring menu for us. For our group size we were able to get 3 pots, and for the teas we got the Strawberry Mint, Hojicha with Osmanthus, and Sakura Sencha Tea. All of them were so good. The strawberry mint tea was on the lighter side, while the osmanthus hojicha was stronger, so it was nice to get a little bit of both sides to balance the food. For the first course we had more savory items, with the egg sandwich, salmon rice, and inari. For the special dish they brought out the strawberry tiramisu which was probably one of my favorite items. For the last course, they brought out these boxes stacked into 3, with each box containing the rest of the items. In the first box, there was a strawberry matcha custard cream puff and a strawberry tart. In the second box, there was a strawberry dango, strawberry mochi, and a strawberry jelly. In the third box, there was a mochi chocolate chip cookie, matcha nama chocolate, and a sakura cookie. My favorite items of that afternoon were probably the inari, strawberry tiramisu, and mochi chocolate chip cookie. All of the items we had were great though, and they weren't too sweet which is good for the amount of desserts there are. It's really nice that they switch up the menu every season so you're always getting something different. At the time we went was in the spring so their theme was strawberry. Rule #1: Everyone at the table has to order at least one item. Wish we knew that before sitting down, but heads up for you! I was thrilled to find a reservation for two on a Saturday afternoon to have their Matcha Tea set. Not cheap, it was $150 for two and does not include the tip. There is a cafe downstairs that is more casual, and the afternoon tea is served upstairs. We immediately liked it as the space is very cute. I consider myself a parfait connoisseur and having been to the parfait Motherland (Tokyo), many times I feel confident in deeming this the best parfait in New York (and I have tried them all). You have to walk up a narrow flight of stairs and check in on the 2nd floor with the hostess. Despite being on time for the reservation, there was a slight wait as the staff was setting up the dining area. The afternoon tea experience takes place on the 3rd floor. I was worried about portion sizes and wondered if I would still be full after, but each dish was savory and filling. I was comfortably full! That was one of the first phrases I picked up from Duolingo...which for a native Chinese reader has a bit of a gulf to cross, as daijobu (the first 3 characters) literally means "a true man" in modern Chinese, or in modern parlance "A real Chad"...which is far from the "are you okay" understanding of modern Japanese. I am sure more than one person from my age would've encountered "大丈夫流血不流淚" ("a real chad sheds blood not tears")...which explains my late dad and grand-dad's cavalier atitude towards mental health. its one thing to hear it on Duolingo, but when encountered while reading fluffy rom-com manga (yeah, I start reading in native Japanese), it's vibin' totally different. Anyways, Daijobu Desuka, Cha-An? You don't seem so hot. What is Cha-An? Well, it's a Japanese tea parlor situated in a small east village townhouse popular with the Cooper Union crowd. Mr. Yagi's TIC hospitality group owns several Japanese joints (including this) within a 4 block radius on East 10th and 2nd Avenue. It is responsible for taking a large chunk of my money growing up with haunts like Decibel/Hi-Collar (sake and Japanese whiskey bar respectively), and fast-casual joints Odafuku, Rai-Rai ken and Curry-Ya. To mention TIC we must mention Mr. Yagi's business rivals. If you remember Dojo, Angel's Share, Village Yochoko and Sunrise Mart, those were joints from Mr. Yoshida. They mostly moved to Japan Village at Industry City Brooklyn several years ago to escape gentrification, and are doing quite decently due to the foot traffic bought on by Book-Off, Daiso and their own food court and supermarket setup. Mr. Yagi's? I am not so sure they are doing so hot. After COVID hit Curry-Ya, Odafuku and Rai-Rai ken all consolidated into one and later shut down along with Tori-ben (the kara-age joint) and Cha-An's downstairs takeout counter. If you go to the TIC hospitality website some were still mentioned but only in passing as an ala-carte catering option. You got competition from the high-end joints in the area, and the fact that tastebuds are fickle things and loyalty can turn on a dime, the only differentiator is service and value-for-greenbacks. Japanese businesses pride themselves on hospitality and attention-to-detail, and given the relative weakness of the Japanese yen, experiencing it in Japan is good value for money. However, when translated to a Japanese experience in the US means that you are often paying top dollars for it, and if the food quality is mid, details are lacking and service is meh, it makes you wonder why bother. Around the same time last year me and the missus hopped on a flight to Japan (it was her birthday) and this year, I let her pick her experience, and she picked a couples Hojicha tearoom experience at Cha-An for 180 bucks (including obligatory service charge, taxes and whatnot). Well, we get to wait 10 minutes at a narrow stairwell (between 2nd and 3rd floor) while the tearoom is being prepped, and given the prevalence of finger foods in the afternoon tea experience, the hostess didn't automatically offer Oshibori (disposable hand wipe) to the guests. The tea was served inside a Hario Maru teapot and brewed with a tea satchel, and while it was supposed to be osmanthus hojicha, I can't taste much. The food was mid. We got the inari, the salmon don and the egg sando, and out of the 3, the sando tasted like something catered from Costco. The salmon don was fine once the sakura flavor kicks in, but it's essentially two mouthfuls of fishy rice in a plastic cup - the inari was fine...? The roll cake was fine, as was the dango, but the mochi cookie tasted a bit like dango leftovers baked with pillsbury cookie dough. We also got the anmitsu late because the waitstaff forgot about it. The tearoom itself reminds me of being inside the main dining room of Hi-Collar, so if you are expecting tatami mats and quiet relaxation, not really. I think the thing that kinda clenched it for us is that after it's all done, we had to waddle our way down past 2 staircases of waiting customers to exit the building, which seemed both a bit disorderly and dangerous. So, was that worth 68 USD per customer? Not really. It wasn't much pampering, and the food wasn't exactly great - in terms of value for money, or attention to detail. This is probably one of the best dessert spots I've been to since moving to NY. The items are a bit on the pricier side so maybe not some place I would go to all the time, but it was definitely a memorable experience. We went about 1.5 hours before closing and there was quite a bit of a wait. Although the space is small, they fit a surprising number of people in there. Seating area is located on the 2nd floor so you're just kind of awkwardly waiting on the stair case, but it's worth the wait! Each person at the table has to order at least one item. We were blown away by how soft the ice was. The matcha was really well distributed throughout and we loved the scoop of red bean and mochi. It wasn't too sweet either so even though it was a pretty large portion, we finished it without feeling too guilty. We also got the hojicha an chan which came with ice cream, agar jelly, and mochi. This is a lighter dessert and was really tasty. We loved the hojicha ice cream because the tea flavor was so strong. The agar jelly is really neutral so they also give you a syrup to pour over, which ties everything really well. This was such a great dessert spot and took me right back to Japan! Do not confuse this place with the smaller, take-out version a couple doors down (that one doesn't have seating or the full menu). The interior was a little small but very cute. Cha-An is a cozy little matcha gem tucked away upstairs in the East Village. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon without a reservation and were lucky to get a table. We shared the Premium Cold Matcha Latte and the Cha-An Matcha Tiramisu, while my husband ordered another drink (wish I could remember the name!). Both the latte and tiramisu had a bold, authentic matcha flavor--earthy, rich, and not overly sweet. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time and finally got a chance recently during the Christmas week. We 4 were there around 4pm on a Thursday and waited around 25 minutes to get in. The place is bigger than I expected as it is on the second floor through the small entrance on ground level. The interior has a nice cozy, wooden and Japanese vibe. I got the Hojicha Anmitsu and really liked it - the hojicha ice cream was very rich and goes very well with the agar jelly at the bottom (the brown sugar syrup adds to the sweetness nicely). The hot matcha latte is great for balancing the temperature on a cold winter day. It is more on the pricey side with each dessert around $20 each, but worth a visit for a treat when you crave authentic japanese desserts. read more
