Great sushi. Friendly people. Reasonably priced.

Supermarket sushi at restaurant prices. Just 100 yards away from Chiyo Sushi is Whole Foods, which sells much better and fresher sushi. I was really taken aback when I got their 'Deluxe Sushi' dinner. The fish did not seem at all to be sushi grade and not particularly fresh. Even though I was the only one there, they still took a long time to make it, too.It tasted just like the nasty sushi one gets at Safeway or Giant. The whole point of sushi is that it is premium fish. Reply to comment below: Yes, I know you work at the sushi bar there.The whole thing was "disgusting" to me as it didn't seem like good fish, but the Uni sea urchin you put on the plate was also disgusting. I thought removing the Uni might help with the smell but I was wrong. The rubbery clam you put on instead didn't help matters. Interesting that you wanted more money for just simple piece of normal fish. I guess the strategy is to put stuff in there that is cheap, that you are trying to rid of. Anyhow... I am honestly taken aback at the other reviews on Yelp for this place. One should go to Sushi Sono or Sushi King, both in Columbia, for way better sushi at the same price point. I know its not fair to compare to pricier places. Still, Whole Foods sushi is better, and I am not really meaning to endorse Whole Foods sushi here. read more

Went to dinner with my best friend last Saturday evening. They do sushi right. The vegetable spring rolls were crunchy, hot and creamy. The Godzilla Roll was perfect. The tuna was moist and the outside was perfect. She had the Queen Roll which was perfect. I also had the Fireworks Roll. Fresh tuna in a perfect balance. Great local sushi spot. We have a sushi Saturday tradition (takeout/film at home), but finding a good place was tough before we settled on Chiyo. The one time I had to wait because of a rush, I sat at the sushi bar while the chef made our food, and he told me so many interesting things about his background and sushi, like the difference between Atlantic (maybe Maine?) and California uni. It's not a fine dining best of the best kind of place, but it's perfect for us -- efficient staff, fresh fish, reasonable prices. Also -- I've found if they have the ingredients, they'll make a roll, even if it's not on the menu (e.g. I often get a salmon/mango roll). Reliably great sushi every time! For the culinary snobs: it's not authentic Japanese (like in Japan) nor is it like sushi restaurants you can find in L.A. - but it's much better in taste than most other Baltimore sushi joints. Good sushi! My fave is Nate Roll which has lump crab meat on top! First time I've ever had one cz most rolls in other places use crab sticks.. Try Kamikaze roll and New Orleans roll too. They got wide selection of rolls. What I didn't like was d male server that we had. So cold and impersonal service. read more

I only had carry out but the a ingredients were all super fresh and love their level of spice on the spicy tuna. Will definitely be back! Only downside is parking is tight. read more

I ate at Chiyo recently for lunch. It was the middle of the week, so the restaurant was relatively quiet, which is a plus in my book. I had the sashimi lunch, which was delicious. It came with a side of hot rice, which I thought was unusual but a nice addition. I really enjoyed my lunch and am looking forward to going to Chiyo again in the future! read more

Our gold standard for sushi delivery. It's as good as going to Sushi Hana in Towson (out of our delivery zone). I compare it to Sushi Hana because they have some of the same creative rolls, like the Ivy Roll. I recommend the spicy tuna (they don't over season it so you can tell the fish is still good), the Ivy Roll, Patty Roll, salmon skin, and Joy Roll. Standards like the Philly roll, Alaska, and New York are also good. read more

This is by far the best spot in Baltimore for good Sushi. It's got everything going for it: ambiance (it's small and quiet), location (historic Mt. Washington), quality (again, the best sushi in the city), and price. I took my lady there once and she has been hooked ever since. I live about 30 minutes away now, but we still make the trip up once in a while. It's worth the drive. read more

I visited Chiyo tonight with my boyfriend after seeing recommendations on yelp and other sites. However, Chiyo was just average in my opinion. Service: Our server was friendly and prompt and refilled our drinks in a timely fashion. That's everything I need in a server. Atmosphere: This place is pretty cozy with about 6 or 7 tables and seats at the bar. (The parking lot is also tiny!) So far so good! The rolls: Were really just okay in my opinion. A bit too much rice, fish didn't taste totally fresh on some of them. I don't think they did a very good job at balancing flavors on the special items we tried. We got a sushi pizza, which was a tortilla with seaweed salad, tuna, spicy mayo, and parmesan cheese. The flavors weren't really balanced here at all. The nuttiness of the seaweed and the sharpness of the cheese totally overpowered the tuna. I've definitely seen the sushi pizza concept executed better elsewhere. The yellow dragon roll was also a cool idea but failed in execution. I don't think the mango was quite ripe, but I did really like how they topped the roll with thin slices of it. I couldn't really taste the fish very much as it was overpowered by mango. Similarly, with the Geisha roll, the toppings totally overwhelmed the fish, and there was not much of a cilantro flavor as promised, mostly just a tomato/onion taste. I did like that they had such a wide selection of raw and cooked rolls, but I don't think I'll be back to try more. I'll keep hunting for better sushi in Baltimore. (Yama Sushi in Hampden is my favorite so far!) read more

This is one of the best sushi places around. It is a little tucked away and parking can be a hassle. It is worth it. The staff are not the most friendly but they are prompt and attentive. That is all that matters to me. Thank goodness there is a decent sushi place around here! read more

This probably the best local sushi bar. So many delicious specialty rolls. Geisha roll with salmon and cilantro almost looks like a work of art. Just tried a roll with duck. This place has some of the best sushi and nigiri in Baltimore City and county. Very extensive list of rolls including some healthy options, hand rolls and some very interesting rolls. Only place we've found that serves pickled veggies which is very traditional Japanese cuisine especially during sushi meals. Affordable prices as well. I just sat for dinner at Chiyo tonight. Service was great, that is where it ended. We ordered 2 rolls which looked nice and Udon noodle soup. within 5 minutes I was able to pull out over 5 bugs from the soup. I showed the waiter and let him know we were not going to pay for the food and leave and he insisted that we wait for the manager/ owner who came a few minutes later and said, "oh yea I see them, well we don't serve Udon a lot so we only buy the vegetables once a week and the bugs came from them so we are not responsible for that" WOW I couldn't believe that response and I had had enough. This is the best sushi place that I have been to in all of my travels. I have lived/worked in well over 10 states and always look for a sushi place.. this is the reason I keep coming back to Baltimore! They have plenty of rolls (choice is always nice).. the pricing is very reasonable.. and the best part, in my opinion, is the friendliness of the staff! The menu is so extensive it took us quite a while to order, we ended up having a wonderful, leisurely almost 3-hour-long dinner and we never felt rushed. The people working there were just the loveliest. The food was amazing. Super fresh and delicious. There were things we liked more and things we liked less, but we really liked everything, there was nothing anyone in our party didn't like. The prices were surprisingly reasonable for the quality of the sushi. The only issue I had was the rice in my nigiri fell apart, but everything else was so outstanding that this detail didn't bother me. If you like sushi, you'll LOVE Chiyo. It's the first sushi I've had in Maryland that I've craved on a pretty regular basis (and we've tried a BUNCH of different places). Their special rolls are incredible, but even their basic rolls are well made. The portions are perfect, and the fish always tastes fresh. Our go-to appetizer is the wasabi shumai. The only complaint is with the consistency of the sweet potato roll; occasionally the sweet potato is undercooked and not pleasant to bite into. All in all, this is our favorite sushi place. The staff is kind and attentive, and we love getting the packets of gum at the end of the meal. A nice touch to prevent the after-sushi-fish-breath! read more

Finally we found our place for sushi in baltimore! The restaurant itself is not big, but very cozy. Everything was super clean: The tables, the floor, the menus.. A low volume Japanese music was played in the background. The waiter was very kind. The menu offered a wide variety of options. the spring rolls were excellent. The fish tempura was tasty and the 3 different sushi rolls we ordered were super fresh and tasty. In short, we will definitely visit there again soon! read more

just went back for our valentines day feast - i was not surprised by the quality at all. the service was the same as its always been. there was no change what so ever. it still rocks. after eating at as many high rated sushi joints as we have had the opportunity to, its still top notch. love the bar. sake selection keeps me pleased. cold cold beers, great fried animals, the dead fishies are superb and rice is magical. i STILL have no idea what the 1 star guy is on about, other than some sort of grudge. read more

Came here last summer after reading a review in the Baltimore sun stating that the restaurant was superb. When we got there it was pretty quiet-- just one huge (30+ people celebrating a birthday). The server sat us and proceeded to ignore us for nearly an hour. Once the order was placed it took nearly an hour for our rolls to come out and we did not order any speciality rolls. A friend at work told me that this was her favorite sushi restaurant (and she has resided in both NY and Boston). Needless to say, I went to determine for myself, if in fact, Baltimore had an excellent sushi locale. I had my doubts but they slipped away as the red snapper sashimi melted in my mouth for our first course. This small, unassuming place tucked in Mount Washington is truly a gem and I will absolutely go again. The sushi rolls were numerous (maybe 40 on the menu); the owner said the total, on and off menu, was about 100 or more. We tried several and each was as excellent as the one before. These were not your typical sushi rolls from a so-so chef who is not careful about the presentation. The rolls were very nicely executed; the flavors all made sense and the textures and freshness were spot on. The owner is especially creative in combining ingredients. Notably he was very willing to strike up a conversation with us during dinner. I was a little disappointed that none of the staff I encountered spoke Japanese, but such is life on the East Cost aside from Manhattan. Service was decent, food was decent, nothing stuck out though.
