The beef pancake is delicious! A sort of hidden gem tucked downstairs on the quieter side of Dundas (chinatown), definitely a place worth checking out when you crazeChinese foods: soupy dumplings, greasy pancakes rolled with beef, and other delicious options. Be warn, the table are sticky (lacks proper cleaning solution) but an overall great find! Recommendation to owners: great foods! Clean yourtable with "fantastik".

    Vegetarian options for buns

Hole-in-the-wall restaurants like Traditional Chinese Buns have a special place in my heart. Located down a set of steps (unfortunately not accessible), your first sight stepping in are the folks busy making the namesake items of the restaurant---buns! While posher folks might find some characteristics of Traditional a little rickety, i.e. an entrance door that sticks and some bins stacked on tables in an adjoining dining space, I find it unassuming, familiar and comfy--probably partially also because staff speak Mandarin and worry aloud about the marital status of the next generation while working. In terms of food, as a vegetarian, I was happy to find a handful of decent options (4 for buns) on the menu at a fair price. I was especially excited for vegetarian Shao Mai and decided on 6 for $9. Freshly made to order, the buns are satisfying and the service is fast. During my meal, I also saw some folks coming in to get takeout orders, and on the way out, I could see sizeable baskets of buns being churned out--mental note for future catering ideas. Overall, I liked the experience of dining here and would bring my friends to try more of their menu!

This unassuming little dive-y chinese joint is literally my favourite restaurant. Cheap and Cheerful. The owners are lovely people, right when you come in they're at the front working away on their gorgeous buns, and sometimes the older men are sitting near the back, having a laugh. Great atmosphere. They make amazing fried dumplings, and the green onion pancakes are to die for. Their menu is surprisingly eclectic, and nothing I've had here has ever been bad. It's a fun place for a date night, the only downside is they don't serve alcohol. Usually, we get drinks first, or after (or both lol), and just have their comforting, hot tea while here. Definitely recommend. I really, truly hope they will still be around once restaurants aren't arbitrarily shut down anymore (Thanks, Ford..NOT).

Went back this time to try the buns in restaurant this time!! Still tastes amazing Food (4/5) we ordered the Tian Jing Baos, which tasted delicious. My only complaint is that some of the buns got a little but soggy. We also got the steamed fried buns, which were SO GOOD. Crispy and juicy. Ambiance (3/5) I mean, I don't expect much from Chinatown ambiance haha it's a little messy inside but I like the design of this restaurant! Price (3.5/5) not the cheapest buns you'll find around, but it tastes great and is hand made!

I would have give Chinese Traditional Bun a 3 star. The floor is sticky..but is ok, I am not eating from it.. The deco is plain and non existent, but is ok, I am not eating that The food is decently good made fresh.. and I have fun with a group of my fellow yelper.. The dumplings are all made to order, served fresh and steamy hot!! But why 1 star?? Not only the ready made buns were lying around exposed and that lady that making the dumplings in the storefront didn't even bother washing her hands after she finishing using the bathroom... If I didn't witness.. I would say ok... anything can happen when I am not looking..but..... GROSS!!

Do not let the grimy, sketchy entrance deter you from descenting those stairs into a quite nice looking restaurant inside. Space is quite small but it is a hidden gem of the city. The kitchen is upfront so you can watch the two chefs do their work. I believe the woman does the buns and appetizers and the guy does the noodles and main dishes. Anyways, we ordered an onion beef pancake, Dan Dan noodles and a beef brisket soup with Bok Choy. Onion beef pancake: - Outer shell was crispy but not oily (big plus! Hate super oily pancake), they used hoisin sauce to piece everything together, laid down one whole stem of green onion that flatten and lightly charred on the stove/grill. The beef was super tender, literally just melting away in my mouth. Dan Dan noodles: - Noodles were cooked to slightly higher than a al dente, toppings were minced pork, wood ear mushroom and something else...burdock root I think then all of that was nicely drowned in chili oil with extra chili chunks added. Super spicy but I loved it! Beef brisket soup with bok choy: - Broth was delicious, no MSG taste, it was pure beef broth, noodles were more softer almost soggy in texture but still good. Beef brisket chunks were also quite tender and had plenty of cartilage. Total came to about $34 for two people which to be honest is pretty good. I was gonna go to Swatow but they were packed and I'm glad we took the right path eating here. Definitely hit up this place if you want amazing Northern Chinese style food. Kudos to Uncle and Aunt cooking in the kitchen.

Generally your hole in the wall Chinese restaurant serving more northern Chinese cuisine. They specialize in dishes you would not see anywhere else. My fav is the garlic eggplant. Not spicy and eggplant is soft. Also love their fried rice with pickled vegetables and chili. Not spicy at all even when they give it "1 chili"

The dreaded spill, styrofoam wonton soup

Just ordered off ubereats For the love of god don't order from this place. The packaging melted and the soup spilled everywhere, there were bits of styrofoam floating in the soup, the noodles we ordered was supposed to be veggie and what showed up were some of the saddest noodles I've ever seen- initially we thought it didn't come with sauce but realized that one of the "soups" that spilled was the sauce and it was full of rotten pork fat/chunks. The wonton soup had no flavour at all (and as I said, had bits of styrofoam that I kept fishing out). The buns tasted like playdoh and the dumplings tasted old and mushy. Literally not one good thing came out of this order except for ubereats actually refunding the whole thing. We had a few bites of everything but decided the potential food poisoning on the way wasn't worth it. Didn't even try to eat the sad noodles. Don't do it! There's so much good food in Toronto and this is not it!!!

A piece of extra protein (juicy cockroach)

I was a big fan of their Biangbiang noodles but not anymore. There was a bit of extra protein in my beloved Biangbiang noodles today that has unfortunately turned me off their establishment. They were nice and made our food free though!

    Pork and chive dumplings

I like to give hole-in-the-wall places the benefit of the doubt for being authentic, from past experiences elsewhere. This place was sub par...but at least it was cheap? Food: I ordered chive and pork boiled dumplings, tianjin style buns, Dan Dan noodles, and pickled cucumbers (from the Yelp check in offer of 1 appetizer under $4.50). Dumplings and buns were good, they are made in house. Pickled cucumbers were okay but came last. Dan Dan noodles were okay, good spice level! Service/atmosphere: there is a pile of random stuff when you walk in, so the restaurant does not look professional. On the way to the bathroom, I also passed another pile of stuff including a suitcase(?!). The bathrooms were out of toilet paper and one even has a broken toilet seat. The inside is freezing too.

employees all wear clean unified white outfit and white hat which is very neat. The place is small scale operation but their efforts shown!

If there is option I would rate 10 stars! The name is very unappealing : Cvinese traditional buns. They simply translated their Chinese name to English. But what the restaurant sign really reads : Chinese Staple Classic Buns. Which is quite telling what they sell--- things that taste like mainland China. Judging how big the Chinese population is in Toronto u'd be surprised how Difficult to find Mainland Chinese food that is eaten by billion people back home. In Canada majority Asian population is Hongkong background related n they have complete different diet. This is a place that brings u straight to the alley way in China that has little dinners making fresh buns n dumplings and noodles from scratch! That you could smell the aroma from distance. U instantly feel like you are in China. They have the most DELICIOUS buns! And dumplings. I have tried true pork buns, red bean buns. All delicious and fluffy mouth watering. I have tried their beef and Chive dumplings, pork dumplings and egg Chive dumplings . All 5 stars ! My personal favourite is NO.7 called ----pan fried steam buns. On the menu they look boring (upside down flipped over with browned bottoms up) but when they are served they are Sooo moist fluffy, there juices flowing inside the pork with ginger n green onion inside is so delicate. The white buns are freshly hand made , steamed to perfection and then pan fried at bottom. I have brought 6 friends there n each of them r hooked on these. And since then they have been coming back on their own. My bf's first time here he refused to order saying he was not hungry that he ate already. When these were served, he tried one n ate all my serving saying it's the best thing he has ever had. Their Chive egg dumplings r so yum. I am a meat lover but these are so tasty that is one thing I order without meat. ---- how to make steam bun/dumpling dipping sauce: Sniff the sauce bottles( because they both say Soy sauce but one is soy, the other is VINEGAR!!!! Lol ). Mix 2 parts soy sauce, 1part vinegar, some chilly oil . I have since tried other locations in China town , still not one place has more authentic flavour than this one. This place specialize in dumplings too which is 100x better than the Dumpling House . The service here is very good. They are very polite and very attentive. The menu is old and sticky and non explanatory. So if you bring someone speaks Cantonese or from Hongkong expect them to help with the menu then won't be much help. lol but just trust that the food here is good. Start with Their beef noodles and dumplings and pan fried buns. They recently renovated the place entirely . So previous ratings saying they were dingy which was true ,you no longer need to worry. The place is very inviting now :):)

    Xian pork $2.29
    Lauren M.

Chinese Traditional Bun, a dirty little secret tucked away in a basement spot on Dundas across from Pho Pasteur. This place is surprisingly under-yelped but it kept coming up on Chowhound and Urbanspoon as a good place for dumplings and I thought it deserved investigation. When I say dirty, it really is. The floors were littered with food and was in desperate need of a sweeping up. The food was honestly so good that I'm still giving 4 stars regardless of it's dinginess. There are a few nice ladies running this place. One speaks English and is happy to make menu recommendations. There is another older lady who is making fresh dumplings and noodles when you enter. Chinese Traditional Buns has a very unique menu with lots of Northern Chinese dishes that I haven't seen on any other menus. First up was the Xian cured pork sandwich ($2.29, bargain). Looks like a CHINESE HAMBURGER!! The pork was served on a small thin bun which looked something like an english muffin, and was flavoured and garnished with green onion. This was really tasty. Next came the dumplings - egg & zucchini steamed ones. (12 for $4.99). This was my favourite dish, REALLY tasty and fresh. I want more! Next were some steamed buns "Gou-Bu-Li buns of Tianjin". Whatever that means. 6 meat filled buns for $3.99! These were good too but not as delicious as the dumplings. We also ate a delicious eggplant dish that was properly spicy in a sweet glaze sauce. ($7.99 for a giant plate) Tons of unique menu items here, I will be back to investigate further.

A5 Mung bean noodle salad (add chili oil to kick it up)
    Jumping J.

I'm not proud that I know or even eat at this restaurant, but the truth is out now. This dumpling place is located in a dingy basement. When you walk down the dirty flight of stairs you come to a clear plastic curtain at the doorway which keeps out the cold in the winter months. The space itself is not as bad as you would think (it could be worse) maybe a little scuzzy and don't even get me started on the restrooms. Moving on, the soup dumpling is what I usually order here. They are okayish albeit on the small side. The broth is flavourful and doughy wrapper is a tad on the thick side but you do get that explosion of flavourful soup with the pork & ginger filling when you bite into it. Overall a decent dumpling for the most part. Today I wanted to be adventurous and ordered something entirely different: soft tofu soup and mung bean noodle salad. The silky soft tofu is swimming in a soya based tasty broth with cilantro, seaweed & chopped pickled veg, not bad. The mung bean noodle salad is dressed with a garlicky sesame soya vinaigrette; tasty but the noodles a little over cooked. All in all a positive adventurous experience I do not regret. Maybe a little ashamed, now my dirty little secret is out but I will endure head held high.

Bottom is their pork (B2) and top is their crab and pork (B3). The B2 is way better.

The posters outside caught my eye, and I decided to come back with a group of three friends to try it out. We came a bit late around 8 PM, and most of the fish were already sold out except the original. We ended up ordering the Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($40), a whole fish served bubbling hot with three toppings (potatoes, spam, and lotus root). You can choose between catfish and turbot, we chose the turbot fish. It looked extremely spicy, but the spice level was actually perfect. It was a bit on the oily side, but pairing it with rice balanced it out nicely. The fish was very tender and buttery, everything tasted amazing! We also ordered the Stir-Fried Egg with Tomato. The eggs were soft, the tomato sauce was rich. Not to mention the portion size was huge, we even had leftovers after eating until we were full. The restaurant itself was spacious, clean, and had plenty of seating. I think they were doing some sort of promotion so they gave us a $25 off coupon, though it expired pretty quickly so we didn't get to use it. I'd definitely come back for that grilled fish.

A few of their dishes come out on a sizzling plate with flames underneath. They are still in soft-opening mode with several specials. You can see the menus via a QR code. The Hunan cuisine is listed as "Hunan Noodles" and the Szechuan cuisine is listed as "Chopfire Menu". The Szechuan dishes are listed with 1 to 3 chilies representing the spiciness. If you can't handle spicy, then avoid eating the chili pieces and you might "survive". The restaurant decided to minimize their food offerings so that they can focus on refining their dishes in terms of quality and taste, including from customer feedback. We ordered the following: 1. Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($39.95). 2. Home Stir Fried Beef ($21.95). 3. Bullfrog with Baby Ginger ($19.95). 4. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork ($15.95). 5. Drunk Oolong (charcoal roasted oolong tea base) x 2 ($5.95 x 2). 6. Lemon Taro Balls ($7.95). We also saw the following: 7. Stir-Fried Sliced Pork with Green Pepper Noodle Soup ($9.99). First 10 customers each day, only pays $1.00. 8. Ink Painting Cocktail ($5.95). The Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish came out on a huge sizzling platter. The BBQ Fish, a Turbot Fish, was very fresh and flaky, easily coming off the bone. There is no head attached like at typical Chinese restaurants but it would not have fit in the platter. The platter had a delicious sauce (soupy consistency and not sweet), luncheon meat slices, lotus root slices, and two other vegetables, along with chili pieces. The entire dish tasted great together with the various flavours. The menu listed it as 2-chili spicy but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Home Stir Fried Beef is tender. It is listed as 3-chili but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Bullfrog with Baby Ginger has the bullfrog cut up in little pieces; no you don't see a whole frog! The meat was actually good but most pieces have bones in it, so it takes time to eat it carefully. There was ginger slices in it but it, but we thought the slices were quite large! The Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork was very delicious! It came in a sizzling plate. The Cauliflower was flavourful and was not crunchy and not too soft. I've never had preserved pork slices before; it was quite good, not as salty as Chinese preserved vegetables. The Drunk Oolong has comes in a small bowl a with gin and ice. On the side, they include pieces of the charcoal roasted oolong tea leaves so you can smell it; quite a good smell indeed. You can also order it without the gin, which is what I ordered for mine (since I don't drink alcohol). It was such a nice drink! The Lemon Taro Balls dessert was pretty. In the centre was a slice of lemon. The customer service was good. There is plenty of indoor table and counter seating, including a small private room at the back. There is also an outdoor patio during warmer weather. There is pop music playing in the background. There is no free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There are two gender-neutral washrooms downstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-026

We also ordered a few larger dishes for the table, and I really appreciated how everything still felt refined without losing that comforting, indulgent side of Chinese dining. Some dishes leaned rich and luxurious, others were lighter and more aromatic, so the meal never felt repetitive. Service was another standout. Attentive without hovering, smooth without being too formal.. exactly the kind of service you hope for in a restaurant like this. Overall, Mott 32 is absolutely the kind of place I'd come back to for a special dinner, celebration, or just one of those nights when you want the meal to feel a little more elevated than usual.

Finally back for dim sum…read more First off, they need to fix their reservation system. Don't accept 1:45pm reservations if the dining room closes at 2pm. Also, when we call to check if dim sum is being served, it makes sense to inform us of the dining room closure instead of having us come in anyway. We settled for eating in the lounge which ended up being good because bartender, Aiki?, was excellent as our server. Really great. Ordered the following: King prawn Har gow: standard. Not worth the premium Mott charges. Miso black cod dumpling: not good. Wouldn't order again Shredded Peking Duck Spring Roll, Sliced Vegetable : Excellent. We loved this! Nice and crunchy. Delicious duck inside. Good vinegar dipping sauce. Good volume Hot & Sour Iberico Pork Shanghainese Soup Dumplings: Fantastic and unique. The dumplings don't really need dipping sauce since inside there is a hot and sour soup along with pork. These are unique and delicious. Fried Wagyu beef taro croquette : pretty good but really tasted like a Jamaican patty Cold noodle with shredded duck : very generous with meat. Honestly a lot more than any other restaurant that serves this. To be fair no one charges this much either so it should. Flavour could be stronger but certainly decent. Fresh Mango, Coconut, Glutinous Rice Roll: nice fresh dessert. Our favourite. Frozen xiao long bao with chocolate and nut: Tastes like a mochi. Not bad. Dragonball Zen - fun name. Delicious drink. Jasmine Dragon Ball Infused Tanqueray Gin / Peach Liquor Lime / Rose Water / Mint / Seltzer Over $200 for this meal before tip. It's premium an debatable if with it. Will be back but just occasionally.
