I used to frequent this restaurant at least once a week when my daughter and I lived in the apartments across the street. The food was fresh, good, and the menu (though fairly predictable) rotated depending on the time of day and day of the week. We made friends with the sushi chef (who thought my daughter was darling and made her special plates!) and loved the staff! Each time we go back, things seem to change for the worse. First it was raising the prices, which is understandable- almost $12 a person now. Then it was kitschy crap at the payment counter. Then it was charging two bucks for drinks that used to be included. They have since lowered the drinks to a buck-fifty, but changed the kids' menu age ranges from 6-12 to 11. Just weird little things like this. I loved that they had punch cards. I found a couple at the bottom of my purse and hey! Freebie! Of course we had to go pay 'em a visit. We arrived and the feel was different. The cashier asked us how many and how old my daughter is, then finished her transaction and walked away. A waitress came and asked us the same and took us to our tables. The lighting in the restaurant seemed dimmer than I remembered. Everything was clean and well-maintained, no rips in the seating or anything though. The food was fine. The sushi was very basic- tuna, salmon, eel, Cali roll, about what you would expect to find- nothing new and interesting. The pieces were small and the fish was cut very thin. I noticed that the food wasn't heaping on the buffet table as it was in visits past, which hopefully would mean that they were cooking less more often, but it sure didn't taste that way. Unfortunately the fried items in sauces tasted stale and soggy. The fried food tasted frozen/prefab and seemed over-fried. The meat was tough or dry. I noticed they have switched to cheaper ingredients, a lot more "crab" than other fish.The crab legs have also gotten very thin and tiny- seems like they used to be king crab legs, now they are Dungeoness's little cousin.. maybe a rock crab, is that a thing?? Midget crabs? Little crabs? What is the politically correct term?? Desserts and ice cream were run-of-the-mill, salad bar was basic. I never do the Mongolian Grill..it was all kinda "meh.." I was very disappointed at the end when we went to pay that they are using new punch cards and now hand-write expiration dates on them. The cashier unceremoniously tore up my freebie and tried to give me a new punch card expiring next November- not even a year to fill a punch card and get a freebie? Not going to honor already-filled punch cards? Lame. We paid and left, refusing the new punch card. Man- even if the food was generic, at least the incentive program used to be cool. Have to wonder what kind of financial trouble they're in to not care about upsetting customers just to save a couple of bucks. In the long run, you always lose- there are places just as mediocre that want my business more and will up the ante on customer service, if not food quality. read more

Food is under par, chewy mushy fatty meat, I ate something with a mayonnaise base on it like a coconut chicken or something and it tasted just like that, mayonnaise on chicken. Absolutely the grossest thing I have ever eaten. This place used to be so good when it first opened but I get grossed out just thinking about the place now. I came here once a couple years ago, and it was pretty mediocre. For those of you who never watch the news or read a newspaper, keep in mind that this restaurant is is in trouble right now. Back in October, one of their cooks stabbed one of his fellow cooks to death, and the restaurant didn't report it (because both cooks are illegal immigrants)... Also, I have a friend who works at the nearby pornography emporium (Castle). He's told me that they've had to shoo said cooks multiple times for digging around in their dumpsters... So I'd highly recommend NOT eating here. That is, unless you want the plague (from dumpster rats), or hepatitis (from cooks' blood flying into your szechuan beef). Help prevent the spread of disease. The waiter who took our drink order, seated us and rang us up was EXTREMELY rude! Didn't say a single word other then "drink" and walked away. Even when she rang us up, she was on the phone while taking my card and swiping it. The meat was soggy and mushy and reminded me of left over chinese food that has been microwaved. The "mongolian" grill meat was tough and hard. Found a large bone piece in my breaded sesame mystery meat. Paid $11.99 for the Chinese version of Hometown Buffet. I was a bit hesitate about going to a Chinese Buffet. When we walked in I realized it was totally different than any other buffet of this type. They have a Mongolian grill bar that allows you to put a plate together and have it grilled in front of you. They are a little bit limited, but pretty good overall. They also have a Sushi Bar that is very good. The selection of food for the buffet is quite large and the food is very good! It's not greasy or appear to be set out for hours. The price covers the buffet, sushi, and grill sections. By the way the other food bars are all-you-can-eat too. After you eat they got a decent dessert bar that offers a nice variety of sweets. China Sun has been gone from west Eugene for nearly two years now. The building is now occupied by Kabuki's, a Japanese steakhouse that leaves much to be desired. Every Chinese restaurant in Eugene/Springfield is repulsive. Yes, I've tried them all, most of them several times. The problem is demographics; there are very few Chinese diners, so the restaurants offer Americanized Chinese food. This might please some, but is disgusting to those of us who know what Chinese food is supposed to be. Still, if you are determined to eat at a Chinese buffet, try Empire on Franklin Boulevard - it is somewhat tolerable. read more

I've lived in this area for a little over a year, but my love of chinese has driven me to try a few different places. When I first got here, this place was a decent buffet. You got what you payed for and it was typical chinese buffet fare. I've watched this place slide downward and it's really to the point where it's gross. I don't know what happened and I'm disappointed. We don't eat here anymore. The food just sits in the warming tables because of how few customers there are and it gets even more gross. When you go to pay, odds are that the staff are playing with their phones and not even attentive to someone giving them money for their service. The only friendly person in the joint is the guy who does the mongolian bbq grill thing. He's the only spot of light in and otherwise dark and dead restaurant. Okay. I'm a serious foodie raised by a master chef and I have to be honest by saying this restaurant is s guilty pleasure of mine. I see negative reviews and I'm a critic as well, but our experience has always been great! Hot food, plenty of crab and meats for the grill. And bottom line, our kids love it. We live all over the world and our little boys ask to eat here! I love the grilled lamb and coconut shrimp.... Yes it's hot mayo and I love it!!! It gives me my dim sum fix when walnut prawns are so far away! My fav place is Jade Gardens in Seattle. So enjoy. Don't be a jerk. A buffet is a buffet, and this one is great. My friends and I like this place ALOT! We find the main meal foods and soups to be fresh and hot, and the desserts are always amazing, with so many things to choose from! Even the service, when it is a buffet, is also pretty good. I never use bathrooms in Chinese restaurants, have never seen one clean and comfortable. I am picky on this area, and they just never measure up. So all the pictures posted on this subject are "typical" in my book. The China Sun has set, and now Kabuki's has taken over. Great drinks (I recommend the ginger drop made with their own homemade ginger vodka) and consistently good food. The owners worked at Shoji's over 20 years and have brought that experience and flavor to their own place. Ginger dipping sauce is to die for. First of all, LOOK AT THE DATE of the review you're reading! Some of these go back more than a decade, and no restaurant is the same as it was 10 years ago. Second, this is a buffet, so you have to approach it with realistic expectations. If you eat sushi at a buffet, you're likely to be disappointed. The sushi here isn't good. The deserts are pretty bad. I never eat them (haven't tried the soft serve, but the kids look pretty happy). I've never bothered with the salad bar either. It's a Chinese buffet. Not gonna waste my stomach real estate on that. Third, come at a peak mealtime when there are enough people to empty the trays quickly & keep the food fresher and hotter than the rest of the day. Better to wait for the coconut chicken (lunch)/shrimp (dinner) to be refilled than to find a half-full tray that's been hanging out there awhile. So where does that leave you? With the hot foods & Mongolian grill. That's where the fun is. Unlike the buffet by campus, much of the chicken in the various dishes is tender stir fried breast meat, not overcooked deep-fried dark meat. The Mongolian grill is pretty good, & you can ask for less oil if that's a concern for you. You can also add spicy pepper before cooking-- it's the only way you'll get a spicy dish here. If you want more tender meat, go for the spicy pork or beef -- it's cooked separately over fire, not on the grill (btw, not really spicy). Grab a steak knife from the end of the bar -- it's hard to cut up the larger pieces of spicy pork/steak with fork & spoon. The dinner/weekend lamb kebabs by the spicy meats are my favorite -- get a handful tossed over the flames. A number of the main buffet's meat/veg dishes are good for Americanized Chinese food. The fried fish is surprisingly tender (though the zucchini is mushy & flavorless). The wonton are pretty good too. Be aware, they use a lot of oil in their cooking, so if you prefer something lighter, this isn't the place for you. I'm guessing this is a family-owned restaurant, because almost every time I've been there the workers are the same people. They're friendly & very accommodating. Again, it's an affordable buffet. Come with realistic expectations, at a peak hour, and be strategic in what you choose. If you do, it's a pretty good place to eat. read more

Chinese buffets that are actually of the quality of China Sun Buffet come far and few ... more notibly, the one reviewed here (Springfield) is much better than the one in Eugene (11th)! Go figure. The buffet is stacked with about 4 isles serving: Chinese food Chinese-American Food (virtually anything deep fried and aimed at non-adventurous Americans) Mongolian Grill (Various choices of raw meat and noodles for cooking) Desert / Fruits / Salads Sushi (Unagi, Salmon, California Roll) The service is very attentive and friendly. They're fast and prompt serving drinks and cleaning tables. The mongolian grill and sushi make it worth the $10 (dinner) price alone. While the Chinese food isn't the greatest (to me anyways) it will certainly satisfy the tastebuds of many who enjoy an afternoon/evening Asian meal. read more

We never plan on eating at a Chinese buffet, it just happens sometimes. Indecision. Too hungry to think. Toddler with a soy sauce addiction. China Sun isn't bad. We've hit it twice. The Mongolian grill is definitely the highlight - the fish and meats are seasoned well and they'll make the beef rare if that's how you like it (I do). The sushi is okay. It's a bigger selection than what you get at Empire in Eugene, as I recall. The eel was nicely done. The wasabi is real and not watered down. I steer clear of the deep fried items and the pu pu platter favorites, they are not worth the calories. The salad bar doesn't see a lot of action but there are some items worth sampling, along with the shrimp, and the chili paste is located there so make a visit. Parent's Note: Lots of seating and high chairs available. The tables are sturdy and support a clip on. There is lots to look at to keep your tot interested and a wide array of dessert options. Standard Chinese buffet for the most part with the expected offerings plus crab legs, clams, mussels and a little sushi. They have a grill so you can load a plate and have it cooked fresh... the meats are grilled separately and that was a nice change for a buffet (spicy squid and pork was great) Clean, well lit and decently decorated. Lunch buffet 7.50. Chinese and sushi, also a small Mongolian section but I can never figure out how to get your stuff coooked for the Mongolian food. All the fixins are there, but of course they are raw. Do you hand it to the sushi guys?!? There are 3 or 4 buffet tables as I remember: 1 has raw food for Mongolian grilling but again... no idea where to take it to get it cooked. 1 has mostly seafood.Not great though. 1 has salad items and jello etc 1 has sort of standard Chinese food. There is also a very small sushi area with 4 or 5 offerings of sushi. These are standard ones like California rolls and such, similar to the ones you can buy at Safeway. I found it to be bland for the most part and their soups (hot and sour and egg drop) left much to be desired. I was also disappointed that there were not even sesame seeds available. Most places have a shaker on your table. Needless to say, my teenage son (who eats me out of house and home) barely ate. For the most part I enjoyed what they had to offer. Food was kept at an acceptable temperature, and was also reasonably fresh. However, ALL of their sushi had avocado in it, which I don't enjoy on multiple levels. Also, though I enjoyed their Mongolian style grill options, if you give them meat to grill for you separately, keep an eye to make sure they actually cook it completely. I've gotten back chicken and pork that was still raw in the middle. Overall I'd say, if you're in the neighborhood, it's a worthwhile place to go. Came in tonight after work. First sight of the food made my stomach churn (should have left) Sushi had been sitting out a long time (avacado on the line was black) Most of their food needed to be re-filled. I put 3 small portions on my plate to test. Boyfriend did the same. Only meat options were available. Every thing cold, so we didn't eat ANY of it besides the test bites. Was in and out of the restaurant in five minutes. Went to go pay (for two waters we didn't touch) and the lady charged us $12.49 even though we were vocally (respectfully) unhappy about the food. This is my absolute favorite place to eat in Eugene and Springfield. The repair dishes on the buffet are excellent! At the abundant shell fish and seafood in salmon and shrimp and every delicacy it's really impressive and delicious. The prices are really good and the food is healthy and prepared on site. I had eaten at this little place about ten years ago and remembered it being very good- I was looking for a quick easy stop for dinner while traveling and thought that a buffet would cut some wait time out of my dinner stop- the food itself was okay- in fact some items were quite good- they also had sushi but it seemed like it came in prepackaged and was then placed there- they also had a table of raw meat that you can select and take to a grill... more on that in a moment... long story short the food was just okay with less selection then it felt like there was when I first walked in and many of the items were either over seasoned or over cooked- the deal breaker was how incredibly filthy the place was... I'm not talking very busy Saturday night trying to keep up dirty- I'm talking about thick layers of filth and grime that is literally never getting cleaned... the items on the table- the walls- the floor- everything.... I have been eating here for many years. It is the best Chinese buffet in the Eugene/Springfield area. A full spectrum of standard Chinese buffet items, Mongolian grill and sushi. The food is always fresh. The flavors are wonderful. I can't say enough about this place. They even make their own kimchee which is awesome! If you think they are rude, perhaps its because they are family run and not all of them speak great English. Maybe if you eat there at closing time, the food will be lower quality but isn't every buffet that way? I'm amazed that anyone didn't like the food there but to each their own. Worst experience in an asian restaurant We asked for the dinner price to go. The sales clerk pointed at the board that said dinner: $4.99. I asked if seafood was included, and she said just a little bit more.....we brought 2 dishes with some seafood....and a lot if nin seafood. She wanted to charge us $9.00 per pound!!!! We said this is not what you told us, She screammed at us that she said ut was a litttle bit mire and that is it we need to pay.... that is 80% more than the price....so 2 small dishes was going to be around $45.00 when the buffet all you can eat is $9....so it could feed almost 5 people.....also i said that the restaurant should have the listed price....how do i know that was the true proce? When we visited about a year ago, it was merely mediocre. It's gone downhill since then. All of the food that we tried was tepid; the only item that approached 'warm' was the soup. The flavors ranged from tolerable to bland. Eating more than a few bites is really a matter of determination not to have completely wasted your money. I didn't try any of the sushi, so I have no idea if that was room-temperature, too. The ironic thing is that they have signs posted that say 'Please don't waste food'. They don't seem to realize that if the food was at least fresh and hot that people wouldn't be so willing to discard it by the plateful. This place is okay for what it's intended to be. Cheap, all you can eat Chinese food. It's not great, but it's not inedible either. I'm not impressed with the sushi, it tastes kind of odd. My husband won't come back here because he swears the whole place smelled like vomit last time he was there. (I haven't personally noticed this) If you're going to go to some $8 buffet type thing, I recommend this one for its variety, Mongolian grill, etc. but the quality is pretty mediocre when compared to non-buffet Chinese restaurants in town. read more

Recently revisited this buffet-style restaurant; big improvement in food - but the service? Not really. One thing I think I forgot to note before.. they have a customer loyalty punch card - for every so many meals, lunch or dinner.. you get a freebie. Discount for senior citizens. They also have a Mongolian style kiosk that will cook things for you for no extra charge, but I prefer the standard fare there, especially the orange chicken, the sesame chicken, and the pork mushrooms (NOT fried). Good value for lunch.. ($7.50 or so I think.. buck less for senior citizens). Poor selection of desserts, and no free drinks, except water or hot tea. Big difference dinner vs lunch? Slightly better variety at night - have gotten some decent crab legs there when I had the hungries (or 'itch') for them. read more
