China Cafe is my go to Chinese place in Duluth. It just literally doesn't get better than this. Here's why: The service is bar none some of the best I've had with either pick up or delivery. The staff are always friendly on the phone even when they're slammed. The food is delectable, both in taste and presentation. I'll usually order either the Szechuan Chicken, General Tsu Chicken, or my personal favorite - the Mongolian Beef. I will typically order this a side of chicken fried rice and they will either throw in some awesome egg rolls or the fried donuts, which are to die for. I have always gotten to-go or it delivered. Its not really a sot down restaurant. But- the food is very good. The Spicy Garlic Beef is one of my favorites, (note- I love spicy food and eat it on the reg) but its really not that spicy. SESAME BEEF IS AWESOME! Lets see... also the Mongolian beef is really good but sometimes too 'drowned out' by the excessive onions and sauce. THEY ARE MY FAVE QUICK- TAKE OUT -CHINESE PLACE. They also have coupons online and on their physical menu. First of all, let me set your level of expectation for this place. It's a cheap, hole-in-the-wall chinese restaurant. There is really nothing special in terms of decor. Now, what makes this place worthy of five stars is that it pretty much rocks the food genre of cheap chinese. 1) The food is delicious. I've ordered several dishes and have yet to be disappointed. Everything is fresh. I love the sauces, both brown, sweet, or white. 2) The food is fast. Since they do take out and delivery too, I guess they have to be fast, but for someone like me who stops in to eat at their tables, the speed is awesome! 3) Waiter is attentive. This is rare in cheap chinese. Usually they're so busy manning the telephone lines and yelling at the cook, they barely have time to look at you much less give you decent service. This is not true of China Cafe. My water was always full, and the waiter checked on plenty. 4) The quantity and price are right. If you wind up spending $9 for a dinner sized entree you will be eating it for at least two meals. I mean, unless you're a huge glutton. Can't help you there. :p Anyway I love China Cafe. I have not eaten at the restaurant yet, so this review is for their delivered items. I am excited to try their buffet at some point as I have not found a consistently good Asian buffet in Duluth (which seems to have no shortage of bad or mediocre ones). Having said those things, my wife and I were VERY impressed with the food we got. It was delivered hot, obviously fresh and very flavorful and tasty. Their menu is fairly extensive and the portions were huge. In fact ordering 2 entrees and 1 appetizer, we managed to get 5 actual meals out of that (2 nights of dinner for us and 1 lunch for me), and those 5 meals cost us a total of $26 (including tip and delivery fee). Most of the reviews on here are very positive which is well deserved. To the one person complaining about the food being "Americanized", I can certainly attest that is correct, but in my 47 years on this planet I think I've only been to 2 Chinese restaurants in the US that were truly authentic to China. In this world, no matter what our jobs, we cater to our audience and that's all that China café is doing here. If they had a lot of duck tongue or chicken feet dishes on the menu, I'm guessing they wouldn't do that well. That's basically a long way of saying I'm not sure "Americanized" is a fair criticism. Iced tea is freshly brewed and tasty. Prices are very good -- $1.50 for most soups, $7 for any vegetarian entree. Ma po tofu is actually hot, as is (homemade) hot mustard. I really love these fortune cookies because they tend to include actual bits of wisdom such as "all virtues arise from honor" and "he who chastises one chastises twenty", and are printed in both Spanish and English. The random lottery numbers are chosen a little too randomly: mine begins 3, 3, 9, 76, 9. Note to vegetarians: Ordering a tofu dish doesn't ensure that it is vegetarian. Meh... It's just another typical Americanized Chinese food restaurant. If you like that kind of food, then their food is good. For those that are more adventurous, there are a lot of better places if you head towards P.Hill and its plethora of Asian restaurants. (I'm biased, having been to China.) As for the free food, well that's just to get you to return and continue to give them business. Perhaps it's yin & yang... what you get depends on how much you order, with expensive orders getting more. When we decided to stay in last night I quickly scanned the drawer of Chinese food menus that appear on my door at least 4 times a week. I never order food, always go out or cook, but I'd agreed to stay in and hadn't been to the grocery store. I found the menu for China Café and when I read the 5 star reviews here I figured it was worth a shot. We got shrimp fried rice, almond chicken and egg drop soup. I don't generally eat rice, but sometimes I'll do a couple tablespoons just for good measure. Like last night. The soup was good, but I did have to add some salt and pepper. The shrimp fried rice - delicious! Even for my non-rice-eating self. The shrimp weren't as small as they often can be in this dish and the rice was perfectly seasoned. Almond chicken was really good, too. Food arrived very quickly and was still super hot. Now I'll have fewer reservations about ordering in, but still won't make it a habit. This was my first time ordering from this restaurant and I ordered the Hunan Beef with fried rice and fried dumplings...my positive take aways were (1) the delivery of the food was much quicker than stated when ordered. I was thinking (or told) about an hour and it took them about 25-30 mins **I don't live but 5 mins away**. (2) the food was piping hot when it arrived, (3) the delivery guy was pleasant and (4), the food taste great! Especially for the price. My ONLY issue was I ordered my fried rice with no eggs and no onion. I open my container to see both had been added. I started to call back and complain but I wasn't supposed to have carbs anyway. Sorry, I don't get the raves. I eat here occasionally, but only because it is the only "all you can eat" buffet in the area. It's very American Chinese Buffet food. What's good: -It's a buffet so you can get in and out quick. -Service - server brings beverages and do this well and are friendly. Let me stress this: they are very nice people. What's not so good -Layout is small, and you literally sit back to back with other patrons. -It can be hard to get to the buffet and back - did I mention all you can eat? When you go through the line you end up in a corner and have to squeeze past the feeding line. A little too intimate. -The buffet is limited - maybe 10 dishes and does not vary. -The food is only ok, but you can eat a lot of it if you are hungry. The hot and sour soup is... well... funky. -I have been there when the health rating was below 50. Said it was due to a refrigerator going out and an inspector who was not understanding. -The napkins on top of the buffet smell kinda like kerosene. -Some of the condiments on the table frighten me. If you are looking for a 4-5 star experience in a Chinese restaurant, this is not it. What can I say that everyone else who gave this 5 starts hasn't said? Not much but I love to throw my 2 cents in anyhows... Very fresh and big portions. A vegetarian pal ordered something w/ tofu and said it was cooked just like she hoped it would be...I have no experience in that field. My girl ordered garlic chicken and despite my recent health kick I kept stealing some off her plate. She was surprised at how much better than she expected it had tasted... and obviously i was too, Was jealous of her plate. I got the steamed chicken and veggies w/ a teriyaki sauce on the side. Very "fresh" and cooked to perfection. Bland without the sauce because it's a lower calorie plate and it's not drenched in anything yummy but it worked for me. The Kung Pao Chicken was really sweet, like sweet/sour chicken sweet, and to my horror, so was the peking delight. It was more or less like they were dunked in the same sauce, some non-descript sugary, salty sauce. It was really quite disgusting. As much as I enjoy exploring all of the various Asian restaurants in the Duluth area, sometimes I'm just in the mood for Mongolian Beef, General Tso's Chicken, Moo Shu shrimp, and the like. This is exactly what China Cafe has to offer, and for that I commend them. Having recently lost our go-to Chinese delivery spot (Chin Chin 7 on Sugarloaf), we've been looking for a place to fill that void. China Cafe's food was certainly tasty, albeit not mind blowing. However, it definitely fills that void for classic American Chinese food. We will definitely be ordering from here again in the future. If you're looking for a less Americanized Chinese food experience, look elsewhere. MEDIOCRE....I ordered delivery, which did come before the estimated time I was given. The Crab Rangoon was HORRIBLE. There was literally NO filling (which is the best part), and the filling that was there was dry and tasteless. The sesame chicken was hard, the Mongolian beef was ok, and the egg-rolls were decent. Customer service sucked. Order wasn't correct. Asked for extra veggies, no rice, no eggroll, and no "chicken" wing, and I even paid extra $ for the veggies. Well, I got the rice, the eggroll, and the meatless wing (which still had hair or feathers still on it, GROSS!) and no extra veggies. Seriously? So, I called them and they told me that there were extra veggies in it. (Um...No, it was the exact same size as it was last week.) They use to be really good, had nice sturdy containers (which we reused) versus styrofoam. They use to put the rice on the side for people who don't want it in their food (which happens when you use cheap styrofoam dividers and it's all mixed up by time you get home). The food has completed changed as well! Proportions are a small scoop of meat and veggies and two HUGE scoops of rice. As far as I am concerned, their meals are basically the most expensive rice you will ever pay for, with a small side of actual food. I am not sure what is going on with them, but I have given them three chances since their "change". Well, they struck out with my husband and myself. They lost our business. read more

Fantastic Chinese restaurant despite its name having "cafe" in it (I really wouldn't consider this a cafe at all). The food is great, and the best part of going here...the owners have an amazing ability to remember all of their customers! I may have been "spoiled" many moons ago by an authentic restaurant in Tampa, FL & another in Gainesville, GA, but I have yet to find a place in what seems to be the meca-center for this type of cuisine in Duluth that isn't over breaded & rice that is authentically fried and not white. This has to be my favorite chinese restaurant in Duluth/Berkley area. I either do take out or delivery so I cant comment on the dining experience. In regards to the food, its really good. It's always really flavorful and large portions. My favorite dish is the Singapore Me fan...just the right amount of spicy and its not drowning in onions like others places do theirs. The owner is super friendly and remembers you if your a regular...they also give out free items if you purchase a certain amount of food.... like free wings or egg rolls. If I am picking up it takes 10-15 mins and delivery is 30-45 mins so its pretty fast and their prices are decent as well. It's worth trying. read more

This was the first time we ordered delivery from here! I got the veggie Lo Mein and my husband ordered the Ma Po Tufo. No where on Yelp or on their website does the description say that this particular dish comes with PORK. We can't eat pork and really it's not big deal, mistakes happens! It's really how the business deals with them. We called to ask what kind of meat is it? And "Annie" told us it was pork. Obviously we were pissed and the way she handed it was less than professional and kept on saying that it's a very common Asian fish and everyone know it has pork in it. Umm no not EVERYONE knows that! I was appalled when she started screaming at us. "Annie" this was the last time your restaurant got our business. Possibly one of the worst experiences I've had in a restaurant. I ordered the teriyaki chicken. Very skimpy on the chicken, overdid it with the green peppers and onions. I had a dirty glass.
