Food we tried in order of favorite to least favorite: - Hot and Boiled Fish Fillet - Mapo Tofu with Minced Pork - Dry Fried Egg Plant - Beef Chow Fun: Noodles were a bit overdone but still tasty - Egg Fried Rice: Tasty but a bit salty - Dry Fried Pork with Chili Peppers: Chicken was super dry and there was more chili peppers than chicken Overall, we noticed most dishes are slightly on the saltier side and gotta be eaten with white rice. We were given one rice bowl per person and additional bowls are charged extra. Service was good. We dined around 5:30pm on a weekday and the restaurant was empty. For the third stop of our families first annual dumpling crawl we stopped at Masterpiece on Buford Highway. We originally went in hoping to try the purple sweet potato dumplings, but they were sold out--so we ended up with the pumpkin dumplings instead. The filling was finely chopped vegetables that, unfortunately, didn't have much flavor. We also tried the zhon-style dumplings and the pan-fried gyoza. While the gyoza had a nice crispy texture, neither option really hit the mark for me. To top it off, all three dumplings came with the same sauce, which was underwhelming. That said, the rest of the dining room was buzzing with people enjoying a wide range of Chinese dishes--and let me tell you, it smelled amazing. The portions looked generous, and the large 10- to 12-person tables came equipped with Lazy Susans, perfect for big families to order a variety of dishes and share everything. I genuinely loved that setup. Would I go back for the dumplings... no! But would I go back to try the rest of the menu... absolutely! This is the only Chinese restaurant in the newly launched Michelin Bib Gourmand at Atlanta. I visited here many years ago and revisited today, hoping to see difference, but I'm disappointed. The environment is okay, the service was courteous, and the menu had a lot of choices. We picked three dishes: Stir Fried Pig Kidney, Szechuan Beef Pot, Mapo Tofu. Overall, the taste was good, but the basic flavors of the spices were almost the same. Stir Fried Pig Kidney and Mapo Tofu taste very similar. The Pig Kidney was tender and crispy, but there were only few pieces, mostly were green peppers and celery pieces; Mapo Tofu tastes very authentic, I like the softness of tofu; Szechuan Beef Pot is very salty, and the beef is neither the brisket mentioned on the menu nor the beef shank mentioned by the waitress. In general it's okay restaurant but I have questions for the standard for Bib Gourmand. read more

Wife ordered Kung Pao chicken to go, which was really good. However, she found out that credit card users pay menu price which cash users get a 10% discount! This is, in effect, about an 11% surcharge for credit cards! Georgia law only allows an establishment to charge what they are actually paying to accept cards, and not to make surcharging a profit center. This is obviously not the case here. Oh, how far they have fallen! This restaurant used to be considered one of the best in Atlanta. Walking in to a completely empty dining room should have been the first sign of change. I'd eaten thee before and the food was good. This time, my wife and I both had HORRIBLE food - bland, no flavor - and that went for the hot and sour soup as well as the spring rolls as well. The only reason they would earn any stars is the staff - they were very nice so the waitress received a good tip despite the bad flavored food. We went here for dinner last night as a large group and enjoyed almost every thing we ordered. Of course, their fried egg plant with ash pepper is amazing. We also ordered veg noodles - delicious but portion was very small. Their stir fried green beans with garlic is a new revelation. I was a bit disappointed with Mapo tofu this time. Normally, that is my go to dish. The biggest revelation and the most liked dish on the table was steamed fish. We got it without the pork that it comes with and it was a perfect bite - well cooked and just lightly seasoned. Everyone loved the beef chow fun, the dumplings, and the fried tea duck. The cucumbers were garlicky and delicious. The salt and pepper shrimp was a hit for most of the group. The dried string beans were good, but not the best we have had. The cumin lamb had a little too much cumin so that the mushrooms turned bitter. The most disappointing dish was the eggplant with ash, which had been written up in lots of different reviews. It was the one dish that wasn't finished and that no one had seconds of. This place is serving some seriously delicious Chinese food! I really enjoyed the dishes with one small personal hiccup. The prices are fair and the restaurant is casual. Service was efficient. The one server was so kind that when I asked her about the hot and sour soup she didn't know the word for egg but she wrote it out. The soup was delicious and comforting. It had just the right amount of tang. My kung pao chicken was well seasoned and ordered spicy. It contained a lot of the mouth numbing peppers! The one item I did not care for was the sheer amount of peppercorns in the dish. I tried to pick them out but to no avail. I don't know if there is a way that they could use less but if not i would not order that again. The dish I absolutely loved was the green beans with peppers and garlic. A total home run. I would drive here just for that. The menu is huge and I'll be sure to try a few more things the next time. Highly recommended. read more

Thank you, Masterpiece for leaving such a bad taste in our mouths on Mother's Day -- of all the days! What a disappointment despite all the awards and accolades from James Beard and Michelin. Let me break it down for the ones looking to go here. If you are a family with children, beware because it takes forever. Your children will end up HANGRY and breaking down. It took forever to get someone to take our order. The food took forever. Even the check took forever. My kids ended up falling apart in the end. We ended up waiting for 45 mins for the additional order of fried fish to arrive. I canceled the order, they brought it later after I was waiting for the check. Still charged us and said it's because they were busy. The staff has no sense of customer service, inattentive, and is somewhat in a constant state of confusion. Food was meh. Dumplings and potstickers were out of stock. Flavor was ok. Go to Tasty China instead. It's better and they are nicer. We had the fried fish - not a lot of flavor. Sizzling beef was ok but a tad too salty. Fried dry Green beans are ok. Ambiance is what's expected of a typical hole in the wall Chinese restaurant. Since the food was ok and the service was terrible. It's not worth the wait, the children's tears, nor the drive. If it's an all adult crew with a ton of time and a ton of patience, go for it. If you are like me, save yourself the misery and go Tasty China instead. read more

I came here with my two boys and we ordered Stir-fried Diced Chicken, chicken noodles and two egg roles for my kids. I was surprise at how flavorful the food was and I didn't taste that freezer burn like you get at some Chinese restaurants. The plate sizes were large enough for all Of us. This place used to be a lot better. We came for lunch on a Friday around 1:15 and it wasn't very busy. The staff were very helpful and the service was good overall. We ordered the Szechwan boneless chicken dish and the chicken pieces were very large. The flavor was good but i prefer the traditional smaller pieces of chicken. This one had a bit too much breading. The spicy pork belly was really good. It was cooked perfectly and very spicy. Loved the jalapeños. We also got the salt and pepper squid (i think that's what it was called). It had lots of flavor and i loved the large pieces of garlic. I would pass on the fried Szechwan fish. The seasoning was good but there was so much batter. I could barely taste any fish. read more

Tables and chairs, no special decorations Service was pretty good and food came out with good pacing We ordered 5 dishes- 1 of them really excellent (couple beef); 1of them pretty good ("water cooked beef", beef with chili sauce); 2 of them good (zhong dumplings with chili oil& fish and tofu with vegetables); 1 of them ok (Dan Dan mien) Our favorite was the "Couple beef" with beef slices, tripes and tendons in chili oil/ sauce with lots of cilantro. This is my favorite Szechuan dish and I've had it in many places across the country. I can say this was one of the bests- aromatic beef, and complex flavoring with the chili oil (not just salty and oily). The quality & proportion of meat and tripe were also good. Beef in spicy chili broth was great in flavors- I just like it better with bigger pieces of Napa cabbage.:) Fish with tofu was a little salty but it was cooked well. A large group came in when I was there and the waitstaff rushed over to see if we wanted to get more food before the large group ordered. Very thoughtful Food is solid. You can't go wrong here. I recommend the Dan Dan noodles as an appetizer so you can try out the numbing sauce. Keep the bowl and sauce and use it to dip your dumplings in it - yeah get the dumplings any of the three are amazing. The soup dumplings were disappointing but still tasty. I've had better. I'm so happy to find an authentic Chinese restaurant with good food, that is opened late, and has great service. I spent a long day at Spaland and was ready for a good meal so did a search for Chinese restaurants and Masterpiece came up with excellent reviews. I love going to Spaland, so I like that I now have a place to stop for a meal after my spa day. You can place your order online through their website and then pay when you pick up. If you use cash, you get a percent taken off of your bill. It's in a shopping plaza behind the QT so you shouldn't have to worry about parking and there are several tables inside for dining.   I ordered sauteed broccoli $13.95, salt & pepper prawns $19.95, and white rice $1.50. This was a to go order and the food was well packaged and was still warm when I arrived home 20 minutes later.  Very large portions and the prawns were huge so excellent price for what you're receiving. Everything was packed full of flavor and very fresh. I had enough left over for dinner the next day. read more

One of the few but best Sichuan restaurants I have been to! They have plenty of seating, their food will make you want to eat more. The furniture is a bit outdated. The service in my opinion could be a bit better, as the ladies are sometimes rude. But the quality of the food makes up for it. When they are busy they are forgetful; i ordered a Diet Coke and she forgot to bring it out so i had to remind her. I ordered the Kung Pao tofu, vegetable noodles. Mapo tofu w/o pork and vegetable fried rice. EVERYTHING was so flavorful with garlic and spices. Let me warn you food can be SPICY! So it's important to let the waitress know your spice tolerance. Not pictured - we ordered the eggplant with chili powder and pepper ash powder. This also had sichuan peppers, if you are not familiar with this, just be prepared for your taste buds to tingle and go numb for a bit. Masterpiece is one of the few Szechuan restaurants that is worthy of a repeat visit. This is the third time that I have been here, both with three different groups of people. The things that we tried, include the fish fillet, as well as the dry pot. Szechuan fish fillet : Pros: - Fish came out crispy in super large chunks - Portion was perfect to share, and this was actually one of my favorite dishes. - able to cater the spice level down a little bit. Cons: - none Spicy beef dry pot Pros: - Great amount to share - Meat was well seasoned and flavorful. - Nice balance with the fish, not as oily as I thought it would be. Cons: - For their entrées, you need to order a separate side of rice, it does not come with the entrée itself. Even though I would have to say that ordering a separate side of rice for dishes that you know are going to be salty and spicy is a little jarring, I would still come back. It is very hard to find good Szechuan in the greater Atlanta area, and this place does it well. More importantly, it's only a 15 minute drive from my parents place. The next closest Szechuan restaurants are located in Chamblee. Now with the traffic being as bad as it is, it can easily be a 40 minute drive instead of the 20 minute drive. I can't say how these would taste as takeout, I would imagine that it's much better to eat this in person in the restaurant as I have been each time I came here. Definitely coming back. read more

I've visited this place two times now and thoroughly enjoyed the experience both times. The service is efficient and everything i've tried so far was tasty! My favorite dish is the Fu Qi Fei Pian, which is a spicy cold dish with beef and other meat parts. I love the texture of the meats and it goes so well with rice, I think i'll probably get it every time I go there. I don't have pictures but the cumin lamb and fried chicken are very good too! A group of 6 of us ate there mid August. They rushed us taking our order, seemed a bit put out to show us pictures of the dishes, and actually none of us liked our food. Really disappointed. The servers were not at all friendly and didn't want to take time with us for food or drink service. Also one of our party tried to change her order WHILE the servers was still taking orders from another person at our table. The server said, too late - it had already gone in on the computer!
