It was great walking into the restaurant and hearing Mandarin conversations in the background. I was uber excited to get some real flavor. The Dan Dan noodles hit the mark. This version packs the szechuan spice with the vinegar dark soy concoction that made your tongue tingle. If I only stopped there, it would be a different review. The infused tea duck lacked in every department. It wasn't steeped long enough to absorb any tea essence, and the duck was bit dry and bland. I normally have it Shanghai style and this one was dim in comparison. Also, the soup dumpling had a homemade taste but lacked finesse. The skins were too thick and had a one note delivery. I've passed by this place a couple of times and from outside, it is very unassuming. Out of curiosity, I went in to check it out. The place was large but empty with the exception of the staff working on a table and a patron in a booth. One waitress pointed at a table for us and as we sat down, she brought us menus. We looked through the menu, which has a lot, and I noticed some of their purple dumplings. They looked appealing but I was out voted for other dishes. Nonetheless, I am happy I walked in. We stopped by recently on our way into Atlanta and I am so happy we did. I had never tried Szechuan food before and this place had been on my list for a bit. We came in for a late lunch. Were were greeted and seated immediately. Service throughout our visit was great. We looked over the menu and decided to start with a few noodle dishes. We chose dan dan noodles and Chongqing style noodles. For our main meals we decided to go with spicy diced chicken and mapo tofu. The waitress warned us that these dishes were spicy so we asked to have them made medium. Our noodles came out quickly and they looked good. We enjoyed the dan dan noodles a bit more as the flavor was more balanced. The Chongqing noodles were just a bit salty for our tasty, but incredibly flavorful. Shortly after we finished our apps, our mains came out. We both started on the mapo tofu. Thankfully we order it medium as we both broke into a sweat, but we enjoyed every minute of it. The szechuan peppercorns were pretty intense and it was an interesting feeling. The spicy chicken was equally spicy, but very much enjoyed. We managed to polish off both dishes and were quite happy with our selections. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal. The food and service were spot on. I read a lot of the yelp reviews and had a few things i knew we wanted to order & was ready for a menu with no descriptions. Our server was so lovely - i told her it was our first time & that one of us could not do spicy. She immediately went & grabbed an ipad with pictures of the menu items & recommended ones that were not spicy for my daughter. She loved her non-spicy noodles! Our hands-down favorite was the eggplant with the cilantro & peppers. We also had boneless fried chicken with peppers that was the perfect amount of heat.Black pepper beef had a great flavor & a nice sauce. Dumplings were delicious. Came here with my family from some recommendations by friends. Definitely a very authentic Sichuanese place with great food! We ordered the C1. Fu Qi Fei Pian (a must-have cold dish), D10. Fish Fillet w. Pickled Cabbage and Chili, E2. Onion Spicy Dry Pot Chicken, and E9. Masterpiece Stir Fried Chicken. All of the dishes tasted amazing and coming from a family from Sichuan, seemed pretty authentic in flavor. I've always loved Masterpiece, and now finally getting to write a review! They have home-cooking style Szechuan dishes, which are from the southern part of China. Szechuan style dishes are known for their spice and numbing flavors, which means if you can't do spicy, don't order anything spicy!! It took me a few tries to become a fan of this place, but now I'm a big fan! I have a friend who comes into town and every time he comes, he loves to dine at Masterpiece. He loves Szechuan food and although Masterpiece is a long drive from the city, it's the best in the metro Atlanta area. I've never really had a long wait here, but maybe that's just my luck. The staff sometimes has a language barrier, so please do your research ahead of time and know exactly what you're looking to order -- sometimes the menu doesn't translate precisely well and you could up ordering a similar dish but not what you're seeking (it's happened to me before!). My favorites! -Hot and sour rice noodle with pork intestine: this dish is like an adventure. The noodles soak up the hot and sour sauce, the peanuts are crispy and incredible, even the cilantro is good. Don't be a wimp, there's not that much intestine and you could always pick it out. -Dry fry eggplant: because, duh. -Pork with mashed garlic: this is a pretty unique dish and it is very delicious. It's strong with flavor but pairs perfectly with a bowl of warm rice. -Fried crispy pork: crispy, flavored well, delicious. You won't regret ordering this. -Stir-fried minced pork with sour green bean: my absolute favorite dish. I'm a fan of pickles, pickled veggies, pickly things so this is a win-win. 4 stars for a good Sichuan experience. I finished playing a round of golf at Bear's Best recently and decided I was in the mood for a really good meal. I wasn't in "dressed up" mode due to golf, so I thought I'd see what was nearby. Per the Atlanta Top 75 Restaurants list, I saw Masterpiece had received many raves and was right down the way on Buford Highway, so I made my way over. I arrived at the venue to find a pretty unassuming exterior. I proceeded inside to find your pretty "standard" takeout restaurant with dining room setup. There was a pretty equal split of Chinese people and non-Chinese people, which I think speaks to the venue's reputation and authenticity. A young man seated me fairly quickly and handed me a menu. I read that this place is very "mom and pop", and it shows with the server/waiter being very courteous and willing to help navigate the menu while handling a ton of work. I looked over the large menu and decided just to go with what the Atlanta Top 75 review mentioned. I ordered the Eggplant (I went with the garlic edition per the waiter's recommendation) and the Dong Po Pork. I also ordered the venue's take on a pumpkin pie as a starter in line with the fall season. The pie was our relatively quickly and, while more of a traditional pumpkin taste rather than the sweeter pumpkin pie you get at other venues, it was quite tasty. My eggplant and pork came out right around the same time. The pork had a really cool presentation and tasted quite as tender and tasty as other reviews suggested. The eggplant on the other hand was a bit of a miss. The dish in fact had lots of flavor and just the right level of spiciness, but the presentation was a bit plan and there was too much sauce or oil which resulted in the dish being a bit of a mess. Not bad per se, but not quite as mindblowing as other reviews led me to believe (and definitely not something I'd want as takeout after sitting in a container for a delivery). Overall, Masterpiece provided me with a pretty good Chinese food experience. The place may be a bit overrated in terms of the praise versus experience, but the service was great and the flavors and quality do make this spot stand out over its competition. read more

Masterpiece is a longstanding Chinese restaurant on the wonderful cornucopia of ethnic restaurants known as Buford Highway. I have been here twice. A few thoughts on the initial impression upon walking in: The restaurant is sufficiently commodious for either small parties at a booth or larger parties at a roundtable. It emanates a "no frills" atmosphere...consistent with its location at a low key strip mall. Service is...well...good enough. When asked if we could have minced pork on the side of the mapo tofu dish (instead of incorporated inside it), we got a frustrated look from the waitress, who went to check on this request (we seriously didn't intend for this to be an ordeal), and they ultimately obliged. The mapo tofu was quite delicious and more than spicy enough for the vast majority of palettes. Large dish as well! The Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce was excellent. Really tasty. Oily as well...though that is expected for Chinese food. The soup dumplings were great in every way - except for the fact that there was no soup in them! We have to dock a star for this...pretty absurd. It's too bad because they were tasty otherwise, and the meat was cooked well. One small quirk: The ultra large cups of water are great, but the straws don't even come out of the cup! All in all, I would still recommend it, and I was happy to dine here. read more

I ordered the Masterpiece spicy chicken. I expressed that I would prefer a medium spiciness. She said no problem we make it medium. Their solution for that was to pack it full of numbing peppercorns. Apparently that is sort of a thing in Szechuan cuisine but this was ridiculous- the whole dish was packed with peppercorns (unbeknownst to me at the time). My entire mouth went numb and left an aftertaste that made me think I had swallowed dishwashing detergent. Every time I went to wash it out with water it got worse. After 15 minutes of trying to get the waitress's attention she finally came over and I explained to her that the dish was disgusting. That's when she explained to me the peppercorn trick. No apology no offer to take the item off my bill no offer to replace it with a different dish nothing. She looked at me like I was an idiot. Weirdest, most disgusting meal I've had a restaurant in quite some time. She scolded me and told me that next time I come back I should make sure I don't order something that requires peppercorns. This place is always great. Since covid, I've been going for their curbside delivery. You call ahead and then they will bring it out to your car on a tray. The fried eggplant is by far my favorite dish along with the kungpao tofu and garlic eggplant. Their vegetables are good too, last time I got the stir fried green beans. Stopped by while car shopping in the area and definitely glad we did. We came for the soup dumplings and even though they were out the rest of the food was excellent. I had the Smoked Tea Duck and it was the most tender, flavorful duck I've had. The portion was large enough to even feed 2. My wife had the steamed chicken and she notes that it was juicy, tender and wanted to fall apart as soon as it went in her mouth. Only complaint I have is that their menu doesn't have descriptions or pictures of the food items so its a bit hard to decide what you want if you don't have a waiter to ask about it. I drove 50 minutes from the airport to try this place. Was it worth it? Yes. Equal parts fancy well executed food, and strip mall restaurant simplicity. Food is served on basic ceramic plates, with plastic rice scooper and stainless steel chop sticks. Table condiments and napkin dispenser on cafeteria style trays. But the food. Is amazing. I ordered the garlic pork. The layering of flavors gives it more depth than just the sum of its parts. And with table condiments of malted vinegar, sesame oil, and a rich soy sauce, you can add additional layers to suit your fancy. The portion of my one dish was generous. And for $14 could easily have fed 2 people. The server was prompt and polite, gladly helping me navigate the menu amidst my anxiety that I would order food that would bore a spicy hole through me. My dish was rated 2 peppers on a scale of 5 and it was perfect. Just a little bit of heat that complemented the flavors, but didn't take over. (Tabasco is the upper limit of my heat threshold). Great authentic food, but super duper salty. Got stir fry duck and frankly, hurt my tongue because it was so salty. tasted like I was eating a spoonful of salt without any other flavors. Imagine that - not good. But the texture was great. Frying didn't dry out the duck, which really does require good technique. Also had kung pao tofu. It was good. Nothing special though. Not as salty as the duck, which was very welcomed. You can tell their dishes are delicious but make sure you order wisely. Some dishes are obviously better than others. We live in the city and this restaurant is located in Duluth. Once we tasted the food we all agreed that this is a destination restaurant worth the drive. It fronts Buford highway and is next to Quick Trip. The dining area is casual and clean with a mix of tables for large groups and smaller booths. I ordered the vegetarian dumplings served with a spicy chili sauce. They were delicious and a good portion size for the price. My main was the tofu with mixed vegetables. The portion was large and tasty. My partner had the hot and sour soup and the Kung pao chicken with peanuts. He said both were excellent. Our friends had the pepper octopus, the duck and a shrimp dish. Steamed rice was also served for the table. They also ordered an amazing eggplant dish. All food fresh and delicious! All staff was smiling and friendly, however this Saturday evening they were stretched thin. I first came to Masterpiece on a hot, humid afternoon in August, where even thinking about a scalding bowl of soup or the numbing spice of Sichuan peppercorns sets off an internal battle -- can I bear the anticipation of impending heat or should I return when the weather is colder and I crave the warmth? My friends insisted the food was worth enduring the layers of spice despite the Atlanta heat, and they were right. The restaurant itself sits unassuming along a strip mall and the interior offers no additional clues to the award-winning food within, besides the pictures on the wall alluding to the restaurant's success, hidden among family photos and quaint decor. When we arrived, the dining room was empty. It seemed no one else was willing to brave the heat, or at least, had sought out cold noodles or ice cream. The menu looks as you'd expect, given the decor -- a simple paper brochure. But open it up and you will be greeted (and perhaps, slightly intimidated) with the wide array of options. For the typical American restaurant-goer, Hot & Sour Soup and Kung Pao Chicken will jump out as familiar options offered at other Chinese restaurants. But Masterpiece is not like other Chinese restaurants -- specializing in Szechuan food, some of the best items are ones that you likely have not had before. My group (a party of 6!) ordered 10+ different dishes. We arrived very hungry, but the waitress warned us that we had ordered a lot of food -- perhaps too much? We went full force ahead anyway, and I'm glad we did because we absolutely cleared the table. The dishes arrived in waves, all very quick, and were shared family-style. The boneless chicken with dry red peppers was the first to go -- only moderately spicy, you can pop the small nuggets (dusted in red pepper and so satisfyingly crispy) in your mouth quickly without thinking, but be mindful of the actual peppers. We also got the fried crispy pork, which was also a table favorite for the mouth-watering crunch produced by this dish. Another fried delicacy is the Eggplant with Chili Powder and Pepper Ash Powder, and this is a must-order. It's crispy but not at all oily and perfectly dusted with a salty, garlic-y dry rub that completely transforms the eggplant. That said, not sure I'd order all of these together in the future -- it's a lot of fried food! Next, we went after the Sauteed Broccoli, drenched in a delectable and garlic sauce. Between bites, we conquered the Boiled Fish Fillet with Chili stew -- marked as one of the spiciest items on the menu. The sweetness of the garlic sauce and crunch of the broccoli provided only temporary relief from the tingling, burning sensation overtaking my tastebuds from the fish stew. This dish is not for the faint of heart, and I have not ordered it since (although I am sure they could accommodate a request for less spice). After my experience with the spicy fish stew, I was hesitant to try the (also spicy) mapo tofu, but it was amazing. The tofu was light and fluffy, allowing your tongue to be entirely overwhelmed in the best way possible with the Szechuan oil. The potstickers and green beans were next -- I wasn't ready to tackle anything spicy for a moment. The potstickers aren't your usual steamed variety, opting instead for a crisped outer casing (which I prefer more), while still delivering on a juicy, flavorful meat filling. The green beans were a miss for me -- a little too oily, without absorbing all of the garlic flavor that I was expecting -- but still good at serving their purpose of giving my mouth a break from spice. For our last meat dishes, we got the dong po pork and smoked tea duck. The pork was hard to share because everyone wanted to dig back in, but with only four small slices, there wasn't much to come back to. It was simply amazing though, very tender -- almost melt in your mouth. I would recommend pouring the sauce over a pile of rice, and using it to provide relief from the heat throughout the rest of your meal. I would not recommend the smoked tea duck in the future -- not only is it a huge portion, but our order was dry and the tea flavor did not come through as much as I would have hoped. This was the only dish that we had leftovers for. And just like that, our feast was over. The plates were cleared as we finished, and the waitress seemed very impressed with the work we had done. Although I have not ordered the same quantity of food since returning, the quality (and spice!) has been consistent across all of my favorite items. I am excited to take new friends to this restaurant and continue exploring the menu, and can't wait for the weather to get colder so that I don't have to brave the heat on two fronts to enjoy such great food. read more
