* Update - They've re-done the restaurant * First - I want to mention that although they don't advertise "50% OFF" outside the restaurant, the prices are still the same, which is amazing to me, because the place looks 100x better, and the food is still tasty. I went the other day and had miso soup which was perfect, spicy tuna roll w/tempura flake which was great as well, california which is a staple, and dynamite roll which is also very good. I don't know how anyone could rate this location poorly at this point. The place looks like a fancy restaurant, your bill is a fraction of what it would be at another sushi restaurant.. When you think of sushi and you live in Midwood--you just can't get any happier than thinking of Chikurin. The menu list is endless, some of the stuff I even think is made up--but in a good way. Being Mexican, it all looks made up to me--wanna know a secret? They will even prepare specialty sushi rolls that aren't on the menu, how great is that? This place always has great customer service and if you ever want to order out--it's like their delivery guys have wings--I swear, by the time you hang up the phone--there's a knock at the door. Do not order brown rice from them. They do not make it fresh. An insider told me they cook the brown rice, store it in a container, refrigerate it till someone requests for brown rice then removes a portion and microwaves it to warm it up. Which explains why the brown rice i had ordered with my rolls tasted like mildew. Cuz it probably went bad. But the way, i paid extra for my brown rice!!! As for the sushi quality, you pretty much get the price you paid for. They are definitely not fresh. Fresh fish do not taste fishy. Hence why they mask the spicy salmon and spicy tuna with tons of spicy mayo so that most people can't tell their fish isn't fresh. The only rolls i recommend are the ginza roll and the inari roll (tofu skin). Both which are cooked and not raw lol. Just be careful! read more

I'm giving it 5 stars because no one expects it to be Nobu but honestly, Ive never had better or fresher sushi since my 2 meals at Nobu. However, the meals at Chikurin are 1/10 of the price. I almost always take out my meals and Ive never had a bad meal. Ive ordered from here and from the location on Kings Highway/Quentin Road. Both excellent. I usually order basic items like the salmon or tuna avocado roll or tempura shrimp roll (sometimes I will go nuts and have a special roll) but a few times, I ordered the seafood salad and its incredible and so filling that I couldnt even eat my main course. The fish on the salad (clams, octopus, etc.) is so fresh and the dressing is perfect. It's also a bargain! The inside of this location is so nice since the reno that I even have dined in once or twice. read more

The sushi is a good deal but the service is really lacking. If you come at a busy night, you will get extremely slow service. They just do not have enough waiters for the tables. Always check your order too if you're with a family and you order many rolls - they once forgot a roll that I ordered - worst part - it came 20 minutes later...that's how busy they were I think they like to keep it in the family so they save money by just having a few waiters. The fish is acceptable (the sushi chefs are always busy (no booger picking ;) and they always seem to be filleting another fish because the orders are endless all day....) it is fresh but the quality is not something that will really stand out. Also, they are generous with the fish in their rolls, which is good in this economy... So unless you've been spoiled by other high end sushi, this is worth going back. I don't know if this Chikurin is affiliated with the one in Queens - but if I had to compare, this one is cleaner, cheaper and the fish turnover is much higher. I've never had not so fresh fish here, but I did once at the Chikurin in Queens. read more

Service was attentive and very friendly; the waitress remembers the name of all her customers. Decor was good. Staff, unfortunately, was Chinese. Normally I despise Japanese restaurants with Chinese staff because the food always has a sheen of peanut oil aroma and flavor, but this Chikurin wasn't bad in this respect. Kama Hamatchi: A+ May be the best kama hamatchi I've ever had in my life. Pork Yakisoba: B- Nice flavor, but it was the wrong kind of noodle. This was almost like an angel hair pasta, not yakisoba noodles. Also, it was inexpertly cooked. Great yakisoba should be lightly charred in places. These noodles weren't and were a bit droopy. Still, they had a nice flavor, hence the B- rating and not a C+. read more

Just had my first meal here since it was remodeled and wow what a big difference!! The place is beautiful, modern, and the food is fresh and delish. For a while the food was on a steep decline but I am so glad that they are back and better than ever. If you gave up on Chikurin like I have, you should give the Ave M location another shot. We've been coming for years. But recently we decided to ask the chef for recommendations and boy... We were not disappointed. Rather than ordering the same old sushi you normally get, why not ask the chef for something more special? The tuna dumplings were absolutely great. Very good and savory. The mango cubes were just the perfect balance for it, a bite of freshness, sweet and tart really was a party in the mouth. Another time we got a really nice boat with yellow tail lined up on fish bones. The way it was designed looked like the fish was jumping out of the boat. Sushi is so fresh!! The decor is also great. I love chikurin. I've been it transform from the old japanese screen doors to the new more modern booths that they have today. I really miss the way it use to be but the food is still great. The waiters and waitresses are awesome and provide great service. It seems a little sketchy from the outside but go a head and give this place a try. Wow. This place is horrendous. First of all I ordered the chicken katsu and when it was delivered it was undercooked! I contacted grubhub asking for a refund, and the restaurant called me saying the chicken wasn't undercooked and I didn't specify I wanted it "well done"?? What the heck, chicken only comes in one type, cooked! Are you kidding me? They refused to give me my refund and only gave me the option of them sending a new meal. Obviously I'm not going to trust them with chicken again so I asked for the pork katsu. Well I ate half of it and became what I thought was just really full, but realized later was FOOD POISONING because my stomach still ached for the entire night and I could not sleep. Finally at 4am I got out of bed and went to the bathroom and vomited my guts out! I tried falling asleep after but still couldn't, and 2 hours later threw up again and even pulled my neck muscle and was unable to look up without tremendous pain. Finally I was able to sleep for a little bit, and woke up at 12 and decided to contact grubhub asking for the refund I originally wanted, sure the restaurant would give it to me since their food made me incredibly sick. Well somehow I was completely wrong and the restaurant contacted me again refusing to give me my money back. And by the way, I spent $23 on this meal, and I only wanted the $6.95 that the pork katsu cost, I doubt giving someone seven dollars will put them out of business!!! They had the gall to offer me a free order of the same meal the "next time I ordered". Why would I EVER order from this place again, let alone order the same dish that gave me food poisoning!!!! I love their sushi, but be aware that they name their "Alaskan Roll" with "smoked salmon", and their "Philadelphia roll" fresh salmon. They have a picture of an Alaskan roll on their menu page and it shows "fresh salmon". Why would you put a picture of it and not go by it when you know customers like to look at pictures when ordering? Our waiter was rude and didn't understand, had to ask another waiter to change our order. Dislike the customer service here. read more

I have to sat Chikurin is hands down my favorite place in Brooklyn to get sushi. It's a bit of a travel to get to so I don't go as often as I like but if it was closer I'd be in here all the time. I've never had any bad experiences with Chikurin and that makes me happy because most of the normal rolls are cheaply priced. Every Time I tell people that they are always kind of give me a look like don't trust cheap sushi but here you can tell it's fresh and worth the price. They also have pretty decently priced special rolls that they show you the picture of so you can see exactly what you are getting. I've always enjoyed that. I've been going to Chikurin for a couple years now and they just recently did work on the place so it's a lot more fancier looking on the inside and looks so much better. I was stunned when I went inside but it looks amazing. They did a great job with the place and I can't wait to go back soon. read more

Okay, after reading an assortment of mixed reviews on this place, I kept on searching other japanese restaurants and continued to see this places' name popping up in various reviews of other places, where patrons stated they preferred this Chikurin over the rest that they were actually reviewing. So, I decided to give it a shot, even though the actual reviews for this place, weren't so impressive. First things first.... I ordered the teriyaki chicken lunch special, which includes rice and your choice of soup or salad. Being that it is still pretty hot outside, I requested all salad instead of soup. I am SO GLAD that they did NOT put the dressing on the salad, and put it in a ramekin on the side, bc it didn't even LOOK appetizing. So when I did a dab test, before dumping it all over my salad, it tasted as disgusting as it looked! I'm not even sure WHAT kind of dressing it is, other then off white-ish in color and disgusting. It is DEFINITELY NOT the amazing ginger dressing that usually comes with japanese food... I mean that was the first thing that caught my eye, it looked like old mayo or maybe a tapioca pudding to be honest. ICK! It wasn't the normal beloved orange colored ginger dressing that apparently every other japanese spot serves except this one. As for the Chicken Teriyaki, I suppose it wasn't too bad. definitely not the best I've ever had, but decent for the price I paid... again another place that uses the sesame seeds in with it though, people really need to start including the ingredients so that we know to ask for it without, but other then that... the sauce was actually pretty tasty....and since the cabbage the chicken was laid on was also covered in the teri sauce, it was also pretty good. My boss ordered the seafood soup and said that it was "Good, Not bad, not bad at all" lol..... I will personally never order it bc I'm allergic to shrimp so I never take my chances with stuff that says "Seafood" but he seemed to really enjoy it, and for the $5 he paid, when I pulled it out of the bag, was a gigantic portion. I would be confident in saying, if you were splitting a meal, you could also split the single order of soup. It was like 2 of those plastic containers you get chinese soup in... Will I ever order from here again? If I do, it will only be because it's cheap and bc my boss is going to order soup, as they have a $10 minimum to deliver so it'd be someplace I wouldn't have to spend alot to get them to bring it. I can honestly tell you my decision for this, is because of HOW AWFUL the dressing for the salad was. Maybe you have to request ginger dressing specially? or maybe they don't have it.. whatever it was... that is what I was really craving more then anything, and my tastebuds have not been satisfied! -__- read more

Everything on the menu is reasonably priced, and most items I have ordered had 'hit the spot'. My personal favorites are the baby clam soup ($5.50), Lobster salad ($7.95), and black widow roll ($10.95). They have a great team of staff and a relaxed casual environment. My boyfriend recommended this restaurant and was so excited to take me. First of all the restaurant looks beautiful inside the colorful lighting, it's spacious, lots of booths and regular tables, clean, and cozy. We were greeted ASAP and seated in a booth. The menu has so many great options. I had the miso soup which was so flavorful so everything started out great. Then my boyfriend suggested we try the rib tips which was freaking amazing, medium slices that were so tender and the flair was perfection. Then we ordered the rock shrimp and I never heard of that but the presentation was beautiful and the shrimp are crunchy and the cooked shrimp inside with this amazing sauce that glazed the shrimp.....incredible. After that I had the California sushi with a mayo sauce on top it was really good. We finished things off with the green tea ice cream which I loved, great flavor and doesn't taste milky like others. All in all we ate well and all that plus refillable hot green tea for only $37. I recommend this restaurant to everyone read more

Maybe it was an off day, but maybe not. I came here for lunch on a Wednesday, and the sushi here was not fresh. It had a weird rubbery texture to it, and almost seemed like it was lightly dusted in a powder. One of my hamachi sushi pieces even had a scale on it. The tuna sushi was especially bad, and I ended up leaving all 3 pieces on my plate. For me to not finish my entire plate of sushi is not normal, and says a lot about what I thought of the sushi here. Because the lunch specials were a pretty good deal, I ordered a roll in addition to my sushi combo. Surprisingly, the roll was actually the tastiest part of my entire meal. For all you sushi lovers out there, you know when the rolls taste better than the sushi, that's not a good sign of a true sushi place, where the more authentic it is, the less likely they are to even serve rolls. read more

It's just great service, nice bathroom, not a long wait, and a small cozy nook to travel to. This location has been our primary (well, one of four) go-to for delivery and eat-in pretty much since they opened. Over the past year the quality of service has steadily declined - longer delivery or even pick-up times, inattentive service when half-empty, etc., however food was still good. Recently I called to place a delivery order (seamless and other online ordering websites for some reason place us outside of the delivery area), and that's where it went wrong. 1) Delivery was promised in under an hour - took 2 whole hours to a minute 2) Ebi fried, which I've ordered before, had 3 pieces instead of 4, and were billed at $8.95 instead of $5.95 3) When I called to speak with someone, I was first told that it has always been 3 pieces and $9, then told that the websites have outdated information, then that I should've ordered through a website, then asked to hold for a manager 4) Manager came on the phone in a few minutes and pretty much told me that if I don't know the menu it's my problem, order was paid in cash, so nothing they can or will do. To sum it up, the food is still fine, but it's their rudeness and devil-may-care-we've-already-got-your-money attitude that was the last straw. I used to frequent Chikurin when it was called Nanatori.( previous owners) Back then Nanatori was the prime spot for sushi. When the new owners took over this restaurant, they did a moderate renovation and began charging 1/2 price sushi. In the beginning, their sushis were a bit shaky. The Spicy tuna was runny and not mixed very well. Their california and their philidelphia roll was also something to be desired. But what a difference three years make. This Japanese restaurant has become one of the best sushi spots in Brooklyn! All their rolls are on the money especially their dragon roll and their fried crab roll. They also have a very nice salmon Bento box. It comes with a nice serving of broiled salmon with soup, salad, one order choice of roll and even fried shrimp tempura. While the staff is very attentive and quite the busy bees( they are usually running from one side of the kitchen to the other) they are not really classical waiters or waitressess I gather. But their lack of training is more than made up by their enthusiasm. They also have different sized Tatami rooms for private affairs but you must order a small minimum. This reasonably priced Japanese restaurant (an oxymoran) is a spot not to be missed. read more

I went in to order some food to go after reading some good reviews. There were not many people seated on a weekday at 6:30pm so I had to wait about 15 minutes for my meal. I ordered the chicken teriyaki dinner box. It was good but there was one sauce that was not mxed well and grossed me out. I may go back to try other items. read more
