I came here for lunch on a Sunday with my family. I've been to Chikurin in Bensonhurst so I decided to check out this location since I was in the area. They're more known for sushi but it was a cold day so I ordered the Yosenabe (shrimp, scallops, imitation crab, fish cake, chicken, tofu, napa cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, carrots, rice noodles) which is essentially Japanese hot pot. Other people ordered the hibachi and the sushi rolls. The portions were just as large as the Bensonhurst location. The hot pot had a lot of ingredients but it was a bit bland. As a child, my friends and I would treat ourselves to a sushi lunch whenever we'd be able to make it in time for the lunch special following our last period of school. To that point, we always knew the go-to spots for good quality rolls (Nagoya, Omiya, Chikurin, Tenzen, etc.). Until recently, I thought they weren't unique in providing such fare until I had a recent delivery from a place around my neighborhood that was flavourless slop. That was a month ago, and I figure I'd go somewhere I trusted from the past to refresh my taste buds; my hope was that Chikurin would give me that nostalgic flavour and quality without breaking the bank -- after a decade, it still delivers on those promises! I ordered takeout through DoorDash on a sleepy Friday afternoon following the New Year's holiday, and thankfully due to the frost, the place wasn't really busy. I remember such sushi places taking upwards of 45 minutes (a worthwhile wait for school kids who didn't have much money), but my order was ready within 20 minutes, which was impressive. The 3 maki roll lunch special is $11.95 ordering through them, and a 2$ add on through DoorDash, but do go ahead and price-check with any coupons you might have. Even without the discount, twelve bucks for three rolls, a salad, and a miso soup is a STEAL anywhere. It took about a half hour for me to cycle home and defrost, and the food was still warm and flavourful. Each and every roll was flavourful and well-presented. Something that some places can get wrong is literally just the rice base, but Chikurin always gets it right. I ended up getting two lunch specials, and I can promise that each of these 6 rolls were delectable: Eel Avocado; Philadelphia; Ginza; Shrimp Tempura; Chicken Tempura; Spicy Tuna Crunch. You really can't go wrong with such a bargain. I would come and eat here in person, if I didn't live as far -- the fully stocked bar looks intriguing. Happy eats! read more

I have been to this place decades ago and have decided to try them again. Every now and again I come back, but I choose other places over them. The one thing I do like is that their sushi rolls are bigger than other places.. However, I ordered tonight, and I understand inflation is a thing.. but come on.... this roll used to be $2.50 it went up to $3.90.. it used to be that rice was spread thin on the nori... now the prices went up and the salmon portion went way down, they just filled it up with rice.. super disappointed. Their chicken teriyaki..the cucumber was rotten, it even smelled bad.. not sure why they would serve this.. and the chicken was just not good tonight, wasn't super soft and the texture was inconsistent between the pieces. My favorite sushi spot!!! I usually rotate getting the spicy tuna crunch roll, philly roll, and/or shrimp tempura roll, but I do love to try some of the speciality rolls as well (Brooklyn, Kirin, etc). They deliver quickly, prices are SO good, and quality is super consistent. I'm so glad this place is close to my house, I've tried every sushi spot in Flatbush and this is the one. Chikurin's premises had a nice traditional and sedate decor. The waitress was friendly and understood (nearly) all we said. We started with a pleasant Miso Soup (priced at a surprisingly low $2). We then had a decent Avocado Sushi Roll (for an affordable $4.50). The roll could have been colder, but it was quickly freshly made. The "Tokyo Chicken" was quite good (although we don't know what differentiates it from teriyaki chicken). It came over a bed of cabbage as well as some vegetables and a generous portion of rice. I ordered Yosenabe "Hot Pot", which was not the kind of hot pot I was expecting. I was expecting "hot pot" to mean a bowl of boiling broth or oil (over a flame) with raw ingredients to add from a side plate, What we got was an unusually large bowl of Udon noodles in broth with a hodgepodge of ingredients already inside, including crab style fish, chicken, and mushrooms. We've been coming to this location for past 20 years and I like it even more after they renovated few years ago. The interior got better and fancier, they also have a private room for larger gatherings with large rotating table. Service is decent, staff are attentive. I get delivery or dine in- food is good, soups, lunch boxes or combo specials, sushi and sashimi, shrimp dishes. I have not ordered any meat dishes (except gyoza) as I'm a sushi lover. I stooped by here on a Wednesday night as this place used to be very popular years ago. Upon entering you get a fishy smell which I already did not like. I know this place serves sushi but the odor of fish is not really a good sign. We sat down and someone came to take my order after 5 min which was pretty decent. I got the chicken katsu with their soup, the fried dumpling appetizer and a combo fried rice. the food took some time to come out but it wasn't such a long time. upon receiving it I was disappointed with the taste of the food. the fried dumplings were the best out of everything ordered and the food was edible but the taste felt different than what I am used to at other locations. the chicken katsu was missing flavor in the crust/batter so it tasted a bit bland to me. the combo fried rice had an odd taste that I only enjoyed the shrimp on it and not the pork or chicken mixed into it. read more

I am so happy this place does delivery near me. I have just been so disappointed with the Japanese places near me that I just had to have high hopes for this place and I wasn't disappointed. My friend and I split a lunch chicken Katsu and a three roll lunch (pick tuna crunch, California roll and a chicken tempura roll). I thought the katsu was fried perfectly! I kind of wish the lunch box was a little more special as it was very basic but tasty. The sushi all tasted fresh, the tuna was fresh, no weird taste or smell. The only thing I didn't like with the sushi was that there was mayo on the chicken tempura roll.....never heard of that before and it was a little off putting. He won't bring you the check where you (the customer) put the tip amount, hes already added the $10 for his tip, and bring it to you like it's the total amount. This is my go-to sushi spot in Brooklyn. We drive here from Queens at times if we want good quality, nice service and fresh sushi. Service is fantastic. The servers know their regulars and we always feel welcomed here, even if we haven't been here in a while. It is stroller friendly and they are very accomodating with table requests, granted that it's not busy. Their menu continues to grow and recently had a lot of new special rolls added. My favorite here is the spicy salmon sushi. I believe it is $1.50 per piece. They load it up and it is one giant sushi. Five of these plus one roll and I'm good for lunch. Their rolls are always filled with fish and they don't cheap out. Good portion size, very little rice and plenty of fish. They also don't cheap out with the avocado for any of the rolls that come with it. Their ice cream is one of the smoothest and creamiest I've had at Japanese restaurants. The worst is when you try to scoop or bite and it's still icy or too hard. Chikurin's is easy to dig into, great temperature, texture and consistency. Whichever vendor they use for ice cream is on point. You can find street parking easily. Although, this restaurant can be tough to spot. While it is on a corner, there are no windows so look for an odd looking restaurant on the corner. read more

I used to come here regularly with my friends, my brother, and family. This was pretty darn good and it's still very good. Last time I came here was approximately 5 years ago. Since then they have renovated their place, their menu still is generously priced. The food was still good and I recognized some of the staff members that worked here 5 years ago. They didn't recognize me (they kind of did back then). Regardless of recognizing me as an old regular, their service was on point. From filling up our cups with tea and water. The food was as I remembered from 5 years ago, great. The staff members were just as friendly and attentive. The decor has changed, it used to be more old school Japanese with booths and walls. Now it's more modern and open. This place has and always will be one of my favorites. I'll be sure to return next time I'm in the area and craving sushi. read more

Had a delightful dinner here the other night. Place is big, spacious and clean. Waitstaffs are attentive and brings over water and extra plates as needed. Sashimi were fresh and the slices are thick. Presentation was spectacular as the sashimi love boat had an ice sculpture and blinking led lights. What my table didn't realized was the ice started melting and leaked all over the place. Sushi were on point and the Unagi Don tasted good. At the end of the meal we got an extra ice cream with whipped cream. A sweet end to a good dinner. Prices are average for this neighborhood. Yelp said it would take an hour to an hour and half to arrive but my food came in 30 mins so the delivery is pretty fast. I've been getting takeout from Chikurin for 3 years and am very satisfied with their consistency. The salmon always has a smooth texture and is flavorful, and portions are generous (they don't bury the sushi in a ton of rice and you can see huge chunks of avocado or fish pieces inside the rolls). One thing that sets Chikurin apart from other sushi spots is their Philly rolls. While almost all places use smoked salmon, which is how Philly rolls are normally prepared, Chikurin uses fresh salmon, and large pieces at that! Philly rolls are one of my favorite rolls here along with the salmon avocado rolls. Both are two of the cheapest priced rolls on the menu, have a great amount of the ingredients, and taste delicious. I am not the greatest fan of their eel or tuna rolls, and the cooked salmon rolls (salmon tempura, ginza) are hit or miss for me, but these rolls are definitely okay to eat - I just am a fan of their fresh salmon rolls the most. read more

This is a no. While the decor is nice and the staff is pretty friendly, the food, what we're all there for is a no. We tried many dishes, from soba noodles, to sushi, to steak teriyaki. The food was very bland, bleh, definitely had better for the larger part of the meal, and while dessert was ordered, no one really bothered and most of it was left behind. What happened later, is my wife was sick, my mother in law was sick, and my sister in law, who was not originally convinced that the food made anyone sick, later ordered from here and got sick from the food! Both were deep fried and also very delicious. I made a mistake and ordered the mojito. The drinks aren't good... it tasted like cough syrup and very cheap. I would recommend a coke. We were surprised to see that the Spicy Salmon and Spicy Tunas to be so red in color. It tasted absolutely terrible. It was extremely salty and contained mostly red fish eggs. It was as if the fish was not fresh and they needed to mask the color and taste of the fish. The salmon even tasted salty and not fresh in the Alaskan roll. This place is pretty much a Chinese run Japanese restaurant that gets things just slightly askew. It does state on the menu exactly what it is, but if you aren't paying attention and expecting certain rolls to be properly made you're in for a surprise. Common rolls such as the Alaska roll turn out to be cooked salty salmon which is quite the shocker. Service is inattentive if you happen to be on the back side of the restaurant. Majority of the wait staff has a major language barrier and they basically treat the customers like everything is your fault. This place doesn't look like much when you wall past it but it came highly recommended by my friend so I was open to try it. To my surprise I was pleasantly surprised at how crowded it was in there. We were seated shortly at a booth and when I opened the menu I was flabbergasted at how many sushi options they had. Pricing was so affordable, and the food was absolutely amazing. The miso soup is an absolute must, as well as the gyoza which may I add comes in vegetable or pork options and is served piping hot. I honestly didn't have one bad thing at this restaurant. They have a fully stocked bar filled with beer, wine, and hard alcohol options (and $5 shots!!!) We even received complementary scoops of icecream with our bill.
