Move over Fresa's!! There's a new chick in town! Not only are the ingredients fresh, you can taste the quality! We were shopping in Bee Cave and got hungry, so I went to Yelp to discover this cute little place. I did learn that they are mainly a "take away" model hence the play on words "picnic" on their name. But there are a few tables and bar counter that you can dine in. We ordered a bit of food- 1. Half roasted chicken 2. Hot wings 3. Roasted Beets 4. Kale side salad 5. Fun selection of NE brand beers! Yes they have wine and unique beer selection there! The roasted chicken was definitely brined- it was super juicy and the chimichurri and salsa complimented it wonderfully. It was explained to me the chicken were free range and how they are raised humanely, reminded me of an episode in a tv series- Portlandia that made me chuckle. The hot wings... Buffalo style but not like at Anchor Bar.. still amazing in its own right. Fresh (I mean there were zero dry spots on carrots and celery and it was crunchy fresh that even me, the non-celery lover- ate 4 sticks with their tasty homemade ranch sauce. (I think it was the ranch dressing bc I literally licked the bowl clean) The roasted beets were served cold with feta cheese crumbles, mint and pistachios. I could eat that by itself as a meal! Yummy! Now, I usually hate kale. Only like it roasted. But I can eat Chicknic's Kale side salad all day long. It contains roasted cauliflower, pickled red onion and a mountain of pumpkin and sunflower seeds! (Maybe that's why I like it so much??) All washed down with a brown ale beer you find in the NE. While we were dining, several people came by to pick up their to go orders and there is a fun freezer where they sell delicious take aways like chicken soup and their famous chicken pot pie, chicken crepes, chicken enchiladas... oh did I mention this is a great place if you're on a keto diet or gluten free restriction?!?? what's up in the hill country looking for a quick spot for lunch and found this place on Yelp. So glad I stopped in. Had the chicken salad which was super fresh and delicious. The chicken is so tender and flavorful. Very fresh salad nice touch by adding fennel and orange segments. Comes with a delicious homemade ranch, but I also tried the lemon aïoli on the side. This is an upscale wants-to-be-better-than-fast-food roast chicken and chicken tenders place. They sell whole bottles of wine. Upscale beer is available as well as elegant Yuppie beverages. They have very good filtered water served for free in a nice samovar. I recommend the samovar. * * * I am likely to be fussier about Chicknic than are Bee Cave Residents. I would take those enthusiastic Bee Cave Resident reviews seriously. Factors that shape my not-with-the-crowd views on Chicknic. 1) It is actually harder than one thinks to do a roast chicken and chicken tenders restaurant that beats the competition because the competition happens to be very good. 1a) If you want chicken to die for, Your two best options are to go Peruvian or Guatemalan, All of which are available in Greater Austin. Inka, a Peruvian fast food restaurant on Wells Branch in the Pflugerville/North Austin nether land Makes some of the best roast chicken on the planet. Guatemalan chicken - which is done best if fried, can be found at Pollo Campero in Round Rock and the Buda/Kyle nether land. Pollo Campero is another experience not to be missed. 1b) If you limit the competition narrowly to American fast food chains, the chicken category actually has some of the most high integrity fast food chains in the country. Chick-Fil-A sets the standard for putting out good honest food in a fast food format. It doesn't hurt that they are ecologically responsible as well. They play "Southern Fast Food" because that is what they have to do for marketing ... but they are actually working at a higher level. Boston Market is more in the take-home-dinner niche. But they also turn out a high integrity product. 1c) The level of the competition means that Chicknic really has to be very good in order to beat out formidable rivals. 2) Bee Cave is seriously restaurant short. This is particularly the case given the high density of high income residents. So it doesn't take much to be a major contributor to the Bee Cave scene. Lakeway used to be that way - but Lakeway is finally fully restaurant stocked. Austin and Round Rock are rolling in restaurants. So us Yelpers from out of town can afford to be a little fussier than can Bee Cave Residents who for now are over a barrel. (Over time, Bee Cave will fill in appropriately.) * * * So what is my take on Chicknic? Under-salted. There is not enough alternative spice and not enough native flavor to make up for a basic lack of NaCl. Salt at the table would be a huge form of First Aid here. It could be fancy Pink Himalayan Salt from a gourmet store if management needs something more in sync with the ethos of the place. Strangely the sauce I had (the sweet sauce that comes with the tenders) does not provide enough spark to cover for the chicken. And sad to say, the tenders just are not all that interesting as chicken, given the other stupendous chicken dishes that are available elsewhere in town. It could be the roast chicken is better than the tenders. It could be that the alternative vegetable side dishes are stupendous ... Although - the salt question aside - my traditional French Fries weren't too bad. * * * I think management really wants to have a legendary classy place. Certainly, most Bee Cave residents are not going to drive to Wells Branch to get take out chicken to bring home. Locals give this place enthusiastic Yelp Reviews. I see their point. If you live in Bee Cave, believe your neighbors. If you are the type of person who eats all over the place, then you may be more in agreement with fussy old me. read more

We had an appointment nearby and stopped in here for lunch. We were greeted immediately and the menu was explained to us. We split the chicken sandwich which is actually in a pita. The tenders and a very generous side of the cauliflower au gratin. Everything was very tasty. The pita had a bit too much sauce making it very messy and hard to eat. However it was packed with a wonderful combination of flavors. The roast chicken is so good. The tenders were perfectly breaded and fried, served with hot sauce. My absolute favorite ( I honestly will probably dream about this) was the cauliflower. It was so warm And creamy. This is a place I'm glad I found and will definitely be coming back! read more

Ordered a chicknic sandwich in the pita bread today with a side of sweet potatoes. Had this before. But havent been in over 6 months. The owner Russell was not there today. The food came to the table and the potatoes were cold. Not enjoyable when cold. Took them months counter and the guy didn't understand me. He took them back, waited a few minutes them the cashier came. I explained they were cold. He apologized and said he'll get more. He brought them to the table. Said they were fresh. Also cold. Finished the sandwich which was not how I remember when Russell made it. No orange pieces actually there was 1 piece, a sliver. But I remembered it being so unique. This was very bland. Very very inconsistent quality and very high prices. We have ordered take out here many times because they a very close. Almost whole draw to me is the popovers but sometimes like are more like cupcake and very small, Some times large but Almost always BURNT! And they are very expensive at $4.00 for two The chicken okay but not good. The Asian salad is inconsistent as well. Different toppings every time I've ordered it. The dressing is good. The orange/mandarin slices tasted moldy. Would I recommend it, it just depends if you get them on a good day. I make a phenomenal brined, roasted chicken so haven't had their roasted chook yet, but I was under the weather and too ill to make my own broth. Making bone broth is ridiculously easy. While I do think this one tastes pretty delicious, I think nine dollars for an 8 ounce little cup of soup is much too expensive. It should be closer to five dollars. That's over $1 and ounce. I realize everything has gotten more expensive, but that is insane. Not to self to keep homemade in the freezer. I can make a 1/2 gallon or more for the same price. Quiet little hole in the wall in a strip mall between Bee Cave and Spicewood. The specialty here is roast chicken, but for lunch my wife and I both went with the "chicken sandwich." It's actually more like a hippie shawarma, with (cold) chicken, sprouts, fennel, orange slices, and other salad fixins'... with white sauce and (at cashier's suggestion) hot sauce on the side. Solid lunch, extremely messy, and more than I cared to eat. In retrospect I would have selected the whole roast chicken meal instead, which gets you an entire chicken, two sides, and four popovers for $50. Our 2 sandwiches and a cookie came out to $43 (after tax). No tips accepted here, btw. I think one person does all the work -- takes orders, then goes back into the kitchen to prepare the food. Placed a pick up order and it was an easy experience. Their current lunch special of 2 pc chicken, side and a popover is an amazing deal for the quality of food. Their rotisserie style chicken is paired with herby and punchy sauces like aji and chimichurri. Also their sides are not to be missed. The Asian salad is filled with crunchy peppers sweet citrus and crisp lettuce. I appreciate that it isn't pre mixed and the dressing is on the side and since salads can end up soggy. There is some countertop seating along the wall but it's not exactly a dine in type of restaurant. All in all it's a great spot of you're looking for an easy and satisfying meal on days you don't feel like cooking. read more

Husband and I were excited to try a new place; and I wish I had better things to say. He ordered the chicnic sandwich and I had the Asian chicnic sandwich. Honestly, took one bite and couldn't do more. I don't know what it was but the chicken was not good, and the flavor combos were weird to me. Also bit into something hard that might have been a bone or something- definitely not a wonton. Husband had the same kind of reaction and we both ended up throwing our sandwiches away uneaten- which was $36 out the window. No sides included and they seem to begrudgingly offer even water - with tiny little water glasses. The pita was ok I guess. This place makes some very delicious chicken! I'm glad they added a couple tables outside and I now see people having lunch in front which is pleasant. Chicknic Blew My Mind! Our family had their first Chicknic experience today and, oh boy, it was epic! I had to start with their highly recommended chicknic pita sandwich and it was an instant hit, anytime I'm in the area I know where I'm grabbing lunch! We didn't stop there - we ordered the whole organic chicken and pretty much raided the sides menu. Everything was fantastic and obviously fresh. Plus, the owner's friendliness added a nice personal touch. It's clear they're all about top-quality, feel-good food. Already making plans for round two! Riddle me this: what do you get when a group of young, thoughtful, well-trained, food-obsessed, seasoned professionals team up to make a new, boutique, health-conscious, quality-driven, flavor-forward, community-based, chicken-centric, mostly-take-out restaurant? Why Chicknic, of course! This place is, in a word, wow. We were in town (Austin) for business meetings and had heard--through the grape vine--that Chicknic was a great place to eat in Bee Cave. We were starving and not too far away, so we thought we'd give it a try. We were immediately taken by the endearing and colorful decor (they make it hard not to feel happy in this place), which is punctuated by understated and surprisingly-sophisticated original artworks throughout. We were met with a smile and warm welcome by the fellow behind the counter. He took our order and relieved our concerns that they might run out of cowboy cookies before we had a chance to eat one (we arrived late in the day and apparently it is possible that they could run out of these freshly-baked goodies!). There were two of us and, as I mentioned, we were starving, so we shared a Chicknic Sandwich (we added the hot sauce and recommend it, if you're into that sort of thing), a Leg and Thigh with Chimichurri, and the Kale Salad. OH. MY. YUM! Fresh, bright, moist, deep, tangy--it's all happening. My only complaint--I couldn't eat enough to also order the other things I wanted to try (had to save room for the Cowboy Cookie). There is so much more on the menu, so we'll have to go back next time we're in town. Also, the beer and wine program is remarkably robust and well-curated (and at shockingly good prices). It was lunch time before we had another meeting, so we had a frozen sweet tea (a delicious and refreshing take on a classic). Run, don't walk, to eat here. Okay, if it's hot out, you can walk; but walk briskly. Or just drive. That's probably easiest. If we lived in town, we'd most certainly get into their freezer section so we could bring it home (to roost...bad chicken joke. Couldn't help myself). DELICIOUS! The sandwich is unbelievably filling and flavorful. We also had the leg and thigh, which was tender and a joy to eat, even without the skin. The popover is mind blowing. Thank goodness we don't live closer or I would eat one everyday. Everything was fresh and healthy, such that I didn't leave in a food coma, which is always a win on a Sunday afternoon. Fiyah! I've been wanting to try this place for a month or so and today I went there to get dinner for my wife's birthday. It did not disappoint. First, the staff are very welcoming and accommodating. I bombarded them with questions and requests and they happily met my requests. The ambiance of the restaurant had a modern minimalist feel. It was immaculately clean. This is not a sit down dining affair, but there are bar stools to sit at while you wait for your order. Now for the food. Like so many reviews before me the food is stellar. The menu seems pretty straight forward at first glance but let me tell you, when basic food is executed to near perfection it elevates it. We got the whole chicken dinner with two sides (cauliflower au gratin and sweet potatoes) and popovers. This meal could have easily fed 3-4 people. The chicken was moist and the skin was crisp.... Need I say more? The cauliflower was super tasty but the big surprise for me was the sweet potato... basic roasted and delicious.
