One drink needed to be Dr Pepper!

Yesterday I used the mobile app, but you have to share the line with balance of drive-thru. My mobile order was correct but long lines took 20 minutes (large orders in front of me). Today I ordered in drive-thru and the young lady couldn't get the order correct (Dr Pepper!).

That's two levels down from the hottest they offer! The chicken tenders are BIG; the "Sandwich & Tender" meal was more than enough food. I loved the decor. Like southern fried chicken breaking bad. I first had it at Hattie B's in Nashville. Hot! I mean really hot! And absolutely cravable. I had sort of given up on good hot chicken outside of Tennessee (not a fan of the other local spots in BCS), so I was excited to try Houston Hot Chicken. Stylish and functional interior, with good sized tables, comfy chairs. A little loud for talking. The best reason to come is the excellent staff, though. They explain all the different spice levels and are educated about the restaurant and their offerings. Super helpful and well trained folks (which anyone in BCS knows is remarkable in a town of college student staffed fast food). Sade, who helped me, is the best! I had a meal that included one tender at the Spicy Level and a Medium level sandwich, and subbed cole slaw for the fries. Also had a scrumptious strawberry hibiscus frosty lemonade - pro tip: get it half and half frozen and liquid for the perfect drinkability. Well, I should have eaten the sandwich before the tender because I blew out my palette on the addictive spiciness and succulent texture of the tender. 13/10 for pure tasty pain. The coleslaw, while not remarkable on its own, is a welcome break. The dipping sauce is fine but honestly, it added more texture than taste when you're eating at Spicy Level and above. I also like how you get the traditional hot chicken finish on the meat but without it coming across like a grease bomb (although your bright orange fingers will tell a different tale). I blew my spice induced runny nose about 35 times. The sandwich, supposedly medium spicy, was pretty mild at this point lol. Very tasty. The slaw and pickles provide a nice crunch and texture. Good bun, too, and nicely toasted. This is a great spot for hot chicken and even mild chicken. The no spice and honey butter levels are good for even the wimpiest diners . If you are a chile head, it's a no brainer, definitely go. And don't miss the slushes!

It normally comes with their house sauce, but I added the house‑made ranch since people on Google were raving about it. If you choose any heat level, it defaults to Nashville style breading; Coop's Classic is reserved for kids meals or no‑heat tenders. They asked if I wanted to swap the fries for something else. I asked what counted as an even exchange, and the only option was coleslaw--which the Double Clucker already comes with--so that made no sense whatsoever. I stuck with the fries. Oddly, the meal doesn't include a drink, so I added an Oreo milkshake since that also had good reviews. The staff was very friendly, and the milkshake came out first and fast. They served it to my table in the empty dining room. Flavor was fine, but it didn't come with the cherry shown in the photos and included in the menu description. Worse yet, it was extremely watery--super runny, not cold, and definitely not "Frosty" as advertised. See my videos. Big disappointment. When the food arrived, the tender itself was great--moist and flavorful. The mild heat level barely registered for me, but the ranch dip was better than the house sauce dip. The coleslaw didn't do it for me. It lacked flavor, and the cabbage pieces were cut way too large. Lastly, the fries. Oh boy. Not refrigerator cold, but definitely cool. Not warm, not hot--just... cool. And ack. Overall, I can only recommend the tenders. They do sell them à la carte for $4 and change, and those are the only thing worth getting that I tried. The sides and the milkshake were just a huge letdown.

We were told the order would be ready in 20 minutes, so we began driving there. It was fairly easy to find this Layne's location right off of Hwy 6, but the parking lot was confusing. Driving in, there was construction in the area and we had to go through a separate lot before we arrived at the restaurant. This particular location doesn't have a dine-in option, though there is the option to dine outside under the covered patio. There's an order and pick-up window, as well as a drive-thru. We pressed the button on the wall to let the workers know we were there to pick up our order. It was really windy the day we went and it was a bit uncomfortable waiting for a worker to come help us. We had to wait a few minutes; it wasn't the end of the world but we started to wonder if anyone had heard us. Thankfully, someone did come and brought out our order. We got the family pack, which came with 20 chicken fingers, a generous portion of crinkle-cut fries, 4 Texas toast, 8 Layne's dipping sauce, and some ketchup packets. The food was still hot and fresh when we opened it at home, and it was delicious. 10/10 would recommend.

A few small changes that I have noticed since their opening: they no longer offer lunch portions/specials and sadly the Rainbow Bowls no longer come with turmeric cauliflower Oddly, as many times that I have visited, I am either the only one there or at most, 1 of 3 people max. Hopefully it's just the early afternoon time of day I always seem to stop in because I would really like this place to stick around. And as much as I enjoy a good rewards program, their scanner has never worked once since initially joining so I have to manually input my receipt barcode into the app. Not a big deal but I haven't redeemed any rewards yet either so hopefully that will be a smooth process. And if I may end on a suggestion, Please lower the music by 2 levels. I have to put my noise canceling AirPods in every time because it's just a tad too loud and distracting to hold a convo. The first time we came here we ordered the Dave's #1 2 tenders with fries, some bites, and large loaded fries. Everything was seasoned to perfection and the spice levels were up to the level we ordered. Pick up was easy and efficient! After seeing they added the Dave's Hot Moz to their menu we went back and it was a complete miss. We usually order our chicken very spicy (extra hot and reaper) and on the second visit it wasn't spicy at ALL. The chicken and mozzarella bites were also extremely salty. The mozzarella was overly salted we couldn't eat more than the first bites we took. The mozzarella bites batter should be spicier instead of salty. The cheese itself is already salty so I wasn't sure why the batter was heavily salted. I'm not sure what happened the second time, but I'm not a fan of food quality changing in a span of three weeks. Overall the restaurant is pretty decent sized and has a large seating area inside as well as some tables outside. The employees here are also super friendly and always answer any questions I've had. There is also plenty of parking at this location. I do have to say this location tends to get super busy during the weekend so I highly recommend online ordering for easy pickup!!
