I was surprised to see Chicha San Chen in Boston! I used to buy Taiwanese milk tea there all the time in Hong Kong. Bubble Volcano熔岩波霸黑糖鮮奶: It didn't taste as good as the Hong Kong version. The milk flavor was very weak, the brown sugar didn't cling to the cup and tasted artificially sweet, the texture was very watery, and the boba was just regular. It's basically across the street from Taco Bell on Boyleston st. This place is upscale boba tea if I'd ever seen one. While waiting inside, you can see workers measuring everything to ensure consistency and precision. It is very clean and it takes some time to get your order. The gimmick with this place is they give you your drinks in a thing with strings on it...so you can carry it like a bag/purse or something. Really great find! This boba shop was extremely busy on Saturday night, which makes sense given the location right along Mass Ave and Newbury St. The interior is clean, modern, and bright, though there aren't enough seats (or even standing room) for the number of customers! I ordered two drinks off their popular items section, the dong ding oolong tea (light sugar, less ice) with boba and the bubble volcano (less ice). We both loved our respective drinks. The dong ding oolong was great for a tea-focused flavor, and "light sugar" was the perfect sweetness level. The boba was also the ideal texture for perfect chewiness, which isn't always true of boba shops! On the other hand, the bubble volcano will certainly appeal to someone who likes sweets. Both drinks were $8.25 before tax and tip. They came "dressed up" with straws in cute little holders that theoretically make the drinks easier to carry, but I found it difficult with two (since I was worried about the straws falling out). My first time trying was in Cupertino, and I expected the infamous 45 minute wait for one brew of tea --- but I guess we're impatient in the east coast because my order was ready in 5 minutes! Their teas are brewed to order using high-quality loose leaves, with standout options, this time around I got the Osmanthus Oolong lemon with konjac. Rating: 4.4 Went to try the popular bubble tea shop recently opened in Boston to see if it was worth the hype. When we went it was rainy and the place was a bit difficult to find because the google map location was off and it was on the side of a newly constructed building complex. When we got there there were a-lot of people and was busy but they did have a lot of staffs to cover the load of customers. Inside was pretty small but had some table and chairs to sit and counter to place your orders. It was very busy but was able to quickly place an order through kiosk and they have a monitor to let you know when the order is ready which is very convenient. We ordered the Milk bubble tea and Dingdong oolong tea with boba, perfect sweetness and less ice. The bubble tea came with unique cupholder with string and straw that made it easy to carry the drink. Drink itself was pretty good as the tea was flavorful and not overwhelmingly sweet (with perfect sweetness option). Boba was nice and chewy and slightly sweet. I personally liked my Milk bubble tea better. The service was good and they were also offering tea making demonstration and tasting but the line was long so we decided to skip. Overall the place was pretty good. I would say it's definitely higher quality bubble tea shop than some I've been to. It wasn't cold probably because they used brewed tea and melted the ice, so the taste wasn't too strong either. However, the sample I got of the ice honey osthmanthus tea was delicious and refreshing. Overall, the tea taste is aromatic and clean, definitely not Kung Fu Tea or Gong Cha style. They brew every single cup from freshly grounded tea leaves right in front of you with their "tea-presso" machine. The tea leaves are carefully measured and served when the tea reaches the perfect temperature. Their bobas have the PERFECT chew. What else could you ask for?? New best boba spot in Boston. We came on Marathon Monday in the afternoon and the line was about 45 mins long. The dong ding oolong milk tea was probably one of the best milk teas i've ever had. The tea flavor comes through noticeably, delicately fragrant and mildly smoky. Less sugar and less ice were perfect, as the brown sugar boba (which was also perfectly chewy) added sweetness to the drink itself. At $8-9 a cup, and it's one size, medium only this place is really pricey, but it's truly worth it for the quality. At the back of the store, there is free tea tasting where you can try the loose leaf teas they have. There's like 10 different types and you can choose one to try. There's a session every 10 minutes and the tasting lasts about 7 minutes. If all the spots are full you can just get in line and wait for the next session, it goes pretty quickly. I tried the Dusk tea, which had an earthy, roasted and smoky flavor. It was delicious! read more

I was a little worried that the line would be crazy if we went during the Boston Marathon. Turns out it wasn't too bad! We waited about 45 minutes to order, and then we spent 15 minutes at the complimentary tea tasting. The staff who was doing the tea tasting was very nice and helpful! She explained a lot about the tea to us in both English and Mandarin. I tried the morning and my wife tried the dusk tea. They were both good, but I really liked the morning one. That was an awesome experience and I 10/10 would do it again. Cassia Black Tea w/ Mousse: Delicious, but I think I liked their oolong better. We got less sweet, and it's actually a lot less sweet than other boba shops. Usually getting 50% is the "sweet spot" (haha), but here it's actually less sweet than I usually get it. That was fine with me, as it really helped the tea flavor shine through. Dong Ding Oolong Latte: This is one of my favorites. Their oolong is really top tier. Definitely try this one or the bubble milk tea (although I can't confirm about the bubble milk tea for sure, as the one I tried was at the Atlanta location). Line was very organized. There was a staff at the door controlling how many people could come in. There were two self-order kiosks as well as staff taking orders. Super well-run for their grand opening weekend. Beautiful day on newbury, marathon weekend in Boston-- the wait didn't feel like waiting, so much going on in town. While waiting for our chance to enter the shop, they had staff outside giving samples of their milk tea base to cheer people up (nobody seemed like there were in a bad mood on a 80deg day! We are grabbing a few of their offerings + bubble milk tea (got to try the standard) + bubble volcano + Osmanthus Oolong tea + Passionfruit Green tea Great for our walk around newbury staying hydrated haha. The Bubble milk tea was yummy, their tea is really brewed well (note i get less sugar in all drinks) and the boba had a very good chew and sweetness! Tea def shines for me. The Passionfruit green tea was suggested by the host line miss, whom showed us inside! It was very yummy, glad we got less sugar too and that they seem to taste like real Passionfruit seeds. The bubble volcano is basically the brown sugar one haha sugar intolerant beware but it's got a really nice punch of flavor for a sweet drink on a hot day! The Osmanthus oolong (is one of my favorites just because Oolong tea is my jam! Add grass jelly and boba = fire) light bodied, but full flavor of oolong with less sugar. The staff really trained up on the history of the tea, the process of harvesting it, and brewing it. All ofc to be better... SME or tea advocate! Great experience will def be back! They also have a tea tasting station, take a ticket number and wait for your group to be called (up to 5 people). My guy leading the tea tasting was awesome, personable, funny and definitely ace'd their public speech class haha. They have a small presentation giving you the history of where Chicha sen chen harvest their tea leaves, process of handpicking them, how they brew them and show you during the tasting. There are 5 flavors of tea (which they also have for sale to brew at home by the bag, or a full travel case $180 i think) the 5 flavors: + Dawn + Morning light + Daylight + Dusk + Night The darker the roast (corresponding with their names) the less caffeine content is in the tea. The lighter the tea leaves the more there is. You can tell a clear difference even before the tea is steeped and brewed. They follow ISO standards for tea tasting, 3g of tea leaves steeped in 90deg C, for 6 minutes in porcelain cups. The porcelain cups are used to amplify the senses, smell , sight, and taste. I def liked our choice of dawn and morning light, morning light probably being more flavorful yet still light. Can kind of see it as the choice to start your day. The darker roasts probably have more tea flavor and is good with your dinners or a night cap. Loved the whole experience! Came here while I was around the Newbury street area and glad I was able to stop by! It has been such a popular spot for bubble tea, I definitely had to try it. I ordered three drinks for myself and they all lived up to the hype! All of them had a strong tea aroma and definitely tasted like good quality tea. Really disappointed. I've been to Chicha San Chen locations in Southern California and those were by far the best boba I've had. The Boston spot did not live up to that. I tried the signature and another tea with foam. The tea lacked the rich flavor I expected and the foam just didn't taste right. I probably won't come back. The store is bright and lively, and the tea sampling is a nice touch. Service was faster than the SoCal locations, but I would rather wait for better tea. Drinks are also expensive, averaging 8 to 9 dollars each. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because of my positive past experiences with the brand. read more
