Food 4/5: We ordered the escargot, braised short rib, steak frites. The escargot were lemony and garlicky, which we loved. The breaded short ribs arrived a little cold to the table but were very tasty and tender. The steak frites was spot on, and the bernaise sauce was definitely a highlight. We got the chocolate hazelnut pot de creme for dessert, which was ok. Service 5/5: Our server was very kind and attentive. We also like it when restaurants include a 20% gratuity in the bill! We value a business that doesn't short change their staff. Environment 5/5: We sat inside and the ambiance was great! Good lighting, not too loud, lively but not crowded. read more

Every time we visit from LA we have to hit up this place. Addicted to food and it's such a vibe in there

Visiting Chez Billy Sud for the first time in a long time, for my wife's bday dinner. Though we've casual and outdoor dining plenty, this was our first intimate setting indoor dining since covid started. Chez Billy Sud did not disappoint. The service was impeccable, with just enough attention without overbearing or interrupting conversation. Knowing that it was my wife's birthday, our waiter brought out two glasses of sparkling wine, which was very generous. Our starter salads were great, and we were given plenty of time to pick while we chatted. Pacing was handled very well. Our meals were also both delicious, and actually larger portions than we remembered. We both took home half for lunch the next day. Food was outstanding, service was top notch, and the space was intimate but not stuffy. We were very happy to be back and can't wait till next time. read more

This has been a long awaited review. I've been to chez Billy sud quite a few times. It's a staple restaurant for me in this area. I've sat at their restaurant, but normally sit at the bar area of their cocktail bar, called Bar a Vin, but they serve the same menu so it doesn't matter. Everything on the menu is delicious. I've had their duck, their mussels, burgers, sandwiches, desserts, almost everything and nothing disappoints. The service is so nice - the first time I went was alone and the bartenders were very friendly to me. The ambiance is nice - a bit of a speakeasy /cocktail vibe, but I never feel like I need to fit that vibe to go there. I normally go in whatever I'm wearing after shopping around Georgetown. read more

Dinning at Chez Billy Sud was a great experience. Many drink options to choose from which were all delicious. We had the French martini which was very refreshing. The espresso martini is also very good. The staff was attentive and friendly. All our entrees were great. The star was the confit canard. It was prepared perfectly. This is a great spot for a nice dinner. read more

Cozy atmosphere- in fact the bar side of the restaurant has a wood burning fireplace. Excellent servers, most notably, Fluke, who explained the dishes perfectly, was attentive and gave us complimentary sparkling wine for our anniversary. We had a delicious meal, I had the sea bass and hubby had steak. The dessert - rice pudding - is yet another reason for me to go back! Thanks for a wonderful night! read more

Ordered their zero proof drink, AMAZING!! Nicely balanced, not too sweet, with rosemary-highly recommended! Also got the cheese plate, and chicken pate. Cheese was delicious!! Perfect pairings with the honey, raisin bread, and hint of spice candied pecans. Chicken pate was too sweet for my taste. Also ordered the steak frites. Steak was delicious, frites were cool and droopy. They were redone, and hot, but still droopy. Disappointing, but the effort was appreciated. The béarnaise was excellent. Service was lovely, and the ambience was quiet in the early evening, growing more lively as the evening progressed. The chocolate Creme de pot was dessert, again, too sweet and not rich enough chocolate flavor. Room for improvement, but happy for their reopening. read more

The food was excellent! The service was excellent and the ambiance was nice and cozy at the cute little French Bistro nesstled in the heart of Georgetown!! Wow. French food is on the top of the list of my favorite cuisines and Chez Billy Sud does not disappoint! I haven't been to Paris in a couple of years, but this was a nice transportation back. The decor, staff, and food were all spectacular. Drinks: Garden Party- it was a bit sweet for my taste, but it still went down no problem Apps: Kale salad- Phenomenal. I don't use that word lightly. You get SO much salad and every bite was as good as the first. That tahini dressing is top-notch. Definitely recommend. Escargot- Not too oily at ALL. Escargot can sometimes come in too much butter, but this was in more of a creamy, garlicky sauce. Salivating thinking about it now. Entrees: Scottish Salmon- The potato crust was just that... CRUSTY. I've had Scottish Salmon so many times where the potato has lost all crunch. From that to the parsnip confit, you won't be disappointed. Sea Bass- I didn't get a chance to taste, but it looked delicious and my friend said it was wonderful. Desserts: We each had one of the specials off-menu. Each of the desserts had a sugar dome crust which created a beautiful presentation. Raspberry Panna Cotta- Perfectly tart and light. Just the way to end a heavy French meal. Merengue in a Cream Sauce- This was so so light and so so good! I would eat this every day. read more

My guess is there's a correlation between those who whine about a fair 20% service fee and their reviews. Plus, couples who "gang up" to write bad reviews shouldn't bother to begin with (9/13/24). I have need to visit DC about every 3 months, stay in G-town, and eat at Chez Billy. Never a bad meal or experience. The staff is always friendly and the food is always excellent. Worth every penny, including the 20%. read more

The food was not worth paying so much. They also charge 20% service fee! With this money, you can eat in much better places

Cute place but food is overall too heavy for my taste. Service is good. Vibe is nice. Went for brunch.

We love this place as it is not crowded like the other restaurants in the area. It's my second time here and again it was a great experience. The bartender Tim made the best drinks- Gin Martini and Old Fashion Armagnac! The Cesar salad was so fresh and topped with delicious anchovies. The Burgadian snail and mushroom dish did not disappoint. The sauce with garlic butter was perfect and puff pastry divine. The sea bass was cooked just right with a thin and crispy skin. The service by Tim and other staff was great! read more

The people, the atmosphere, the food, & the drink were all stellar thanks in no small part to our incredible Bartender, Aggie! I could go into exhaustive detail about the dark comfortable bar, the incredible service, inventively fun & exquisite cocktails, recommendations, the food, and the pacing- I could go on and on but I'd rather you visit Chez Billy & Aggie on a Sunday night to experience it for yourself. *Picture Credit-The Internet!- Grabbed this pic of the fireplace from the internet because this is how it felt inside the wine bar that cold night but we were so enamored with experience we did not stop to take any pix of our own! read more

A friend and I had a superb dinner last night Sun evening Aug 11 sitting outside in lovely patio area. Temp and humidity was perfect as both had dropped. I have been dining here for many years maybe 1-2 times/year but had not been there in approx 2 years. Food has always been top of the line but last night may have been the best most delicious ever! I had the perfectly cooked "loup de Mer" sea bass which had a fascinating subtle white sauce with fennel topped by almond-caper buerre noisette. I also had the Caesar salad which was the best ever. Has anchovies (fresh I think), delicious Parmesan dressing & garlic bread crumbs. My dinner companion loved her perfectly-cooked rare "Yellowfin Tuna". Couple at table next to us told us they loved their steak frites & herb roasted chicken! Also, the server Susan was excellent! Perfect professional but I especially loved her descriptions of dishes when we asked questions. It was like listening to Monet or Picasso describing paintings! I kidded her that her exceptional descriptions made it even harder to make decisions on menu choices! read more

LOVEEEE! I came here for my 16th birthday-10 years ago- and remembered how amazing their chocolate cake was. 10 years later and it is still amazing! We had to get all the desserts! It was a tough choice to make which resulted in my party indulging in all the sweetness. Hard to decide which one took the throne. So in other words if you're feeling indecisive, get them all! We didn't go as crazy for the appetizers which is probably why we were able to eat all the desserts. We got the salmon for the table and the olives. Our super attentive waiter kept the toast filled at all times for us to enjoy the amazing salmon dip. As for our entrees...The duck (Confit De Canard) was to die for! It was so tender I didn't have to use my knife. The flavor was just right and surprisingly the portion was very filling. My cousin got the Joue De Boeuf....wow. Honestly both entrees were to die for. The chef -Chef Tyler- came to our table, greeted us and had an amazing conversation with our table. Overall loved the vibe, mood and hospitality of this place. It's pricy for a reason, you really get your money's worth. Will be coming back again but this time will not wait another 10 years. 10/10! read more

Nothing but bad things to say about the service, food and experience. Incredibly difficult staff.

We celebrated my birthday at Chez Billy. Overall it was a lovely experience with a few misses. When we were first seated we had to wait a bit for a server to approach us. From there in the service was very good. The tables are a little close but not unexpected in a small Georgetown restaurant. My husband enjoyed his cocktail. I don't drink. We started with the beef tartare and the chicken liver mousse. The tartare was tasty but the meat was not uniformly chopped. I found the chicken liver mousse a bit sweet due to the gelee on top. The bread was delicious. For our main course my husband had the steak frites which he enjoyed. I had the duck confit. I thought it was overcooked and a bit salty. The skin was extremely greasy and yes I've had confit before. There was a limited amount of actual duck meat. Although I didn't love the duck the spinach mushroom base was delicious. It also came with a wedge of a potato "kugel" which was very good. My husband ordered a glass on Pinot Noir which he enjoyed though noting it was quite expensive. For dessert we shared the basque cheesecake which we both enjoyed. I was disappointed that the only decaf tea offered as camomile. All and all this was an enjoyable experience but for me it's a one and done. read more

We decided to check out Chez Billy Sud on a Wednesday night for a fancy outing. The restaurant is slightly tucked away, but has ample seating (indoor and outdoor) + a unique wine bar. We ordered two appetizers (the pork liver + french onion soup), two entrees (trout + duck confit) and two glasses of wine (Chardonnay + Pinot). At any other restaurant, our dinner bill could have easily reached $150, so we were pleasantly surprised to see that the entire experience only cost a little above $100. The service was excellent--the waiters were all attentive and more than helpful in parsing the menu. The duck confit was a bit salty for my taste, but the French onion soup was by and far the best I've had in my life. The trout was the perfect amount of crispy and juicy, and paired nicely with the wine. We sat outside underneath the awning, and aside from the occasional truck backing up in the street next door, the atmosphere was really nice. If I were more of a lover of French cuisine, I think I'd really love to come back and try some of the other recommended dishes. read more

Drinks The wine list was extensive and had great options. I ordered by the glass this evening, as I was the only person drinking wine at my table, but I look forward to ordering a bottle next time I dine there. Food As a native Rhode Islander, I always appreciate high quality seafood options, and this restaurant did not disappoint. I ordered the sea bass, and it was excellent. The fish was cooked perfectly, and I have nothing but good things to say about the dish. Service The service was great. My friend and I walked in on a Sunday evening without a reservation and were able to be seated. We both felt attended to, and the waitress was knowledgeable about both the menu and wine list. Ambiance The atmosphere did not disappoint. We sat inside, and the setting is classic but not stuffy. It's a fantastic spot for an intimate meal. We felt relaxed and not at all rushed. read more

Returned to Chef Billy Sud after its renovation and absolutely enjoyed the dining experience. Our server Armando took good care of us. The three of us enjoyed two terrific appetizers: the Plat de Fromage (with honey, candied walnuts and lovely pecan raisin bread slices) and the Betteraves (beets, Puy lentils, Roquefort cheese) - both were delicious and Betteraves was particularly beautiful. Our entrees were the Moules Frites, Loup de Mer (sea bass) and Cote de Porc - see the photos to see how delicious each plate was. Then, leave room for dessert. We really enjoyed the Riz Au Lait (rice pudding) and the Olive Oil Cake which was topped with just the right amount of blueberry compote. After dinner, we walked through the outdoor Courtyard (which takes no reservations - first come, first served) as well as the Wine Bar (which has a darker, woody ambiance). I would absolutely come back as this was a terrific dining experience. read more

Very quaint and cozy restaurant. STARTER: RILLETTES smoked blue fish, horseradish, dill, crème fraîche, trout roe ... 10 *Really great flavor, the rilette was very firm in the glass jar so it was a little hard to get out. If it came in a different container, it would've been helpful to get a little bit of the crème fraîche and trout roe in each bite or maybe serve those accompaniments on the side. ENTREE: MAGRET DE CANARD seared duck breast, celery root, wild rice, hazelnuts, sour cherries ... 34 *Duck was perfectly seared to a medium/medium rare. I liked the earthiness of the wild rice with the celery root. The sour cherries gave it a nice sweetness but after getting through half of the meal, it was beginning to just taste like sour cherries only and nothing else. SERVICE: Server was well informed on the menu, gave recommendations for starters, entrees and wine selections. She was very attentive, maybe a little too attentive. I think the food definitely warrants another visit. read more

We ate here for brunch. Amazing. My wife got the omelette and I got a burger and fries. Ingredients tasted so fresh. Our return to Chez Billy Sud was even better than we could have imagined. The Scottish Salmon is one of the best dishes in D.C. The aroma of the dish is wonderful and breaking the crisp potato crust on top of the salmon is reminiscent of breaking the brulee on top of the creme brulee. The bistro burger and frites were wonderful as well. The impeccable service and beautiful environs top off the dining experience. We dined in the fireplace room, which couldn't have been more welcoming and warm. read more

The atmosphere and ambience was wonderful however I'm giving this restaurant this rating because of the steak. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out blue rare. When I asked them about it (after 25 min of waiting for my waiter to come to the table) they said this is their standard for medium rare. The interior of the steak was still cold when I bit into it and was extremely chewy. I couldn't eat it and took it home to cook it more. I will never understand how this is a certain restaurants 'standard'. When one orders something at a certain temp there's an expectation of how it will come out. The inside was completely raw and it was lightly seared on the outside. No one in their right mind would consider this to be medium rare. It is not even rare. Straight up blue rare. Ruined my dining experience unfortunately. read more

Loved our summer evening on the patio last night and our entertaining waiter. Delicious meal of several apps including salad verte, gazpacho, pate and asparagus. And 3 of the 4 of us adored the tuna entree which was protein forward, perfectly seared and with the lightest nicoise style accompaniments. Sorry no photos! The lamb sausage entree also special. The newly renovated space is just lovely inside and out. Calming despite being in the midst of Georgetown chaos. So glad our friends suggested this gem for us! read more

This place came highly recommended. I was worried about the hype but wanted to try it while I was in town. Made a late reservation but they were very accommodating when we got there early. They seated us right away and from the moment we sat down, I had the most exquisite dining experience. We got a variety of appetizers including the goat cheese, beets and Caesar salad, all of which was flavorful and well prepared. The goat cheese was especially delicious! Then the entrees came and we were blown away. I got the mussels and frites which were so good. The mussels were cooked in a broth of fennel and herbs with crème fraiche added for richness. It was very tasty! And the frites were fresh and crispy. The desserts were also spectacular. We got the crème brûlée and olive oil cake. Both were amazing and a great way to end the dinner. Our server was fabulous and very friendly. Overall, my friend and I were blown away by our meal and general dining experience. I've been recommending Chez Billy Sud to everybody now! read more

My daughter and her boyfriend ate here a few weeks ago and raved about it, so we decided to try it as a group for Saturday brunch, and we were not disappointed. Our party ordered French onion soup, an omelet, French toast, and a creamy goat cheese with bread. All of the dishes had fancier French names, but you get the picture. All of the dishes were very good and artfully presented. The chef clearly takes pride in his craft. The portions were just right-- not fancy restaurant tiny, and not huge. I felt that the prices were reasonable as well. The house made lemonade was a hit. The decor and atmosphere is attractive and decidedly French right down to the photographs of naked ladies in the bathroom. That was a little unexpected. LOL All in all, I was extremely satisfied and I will be back. read more

4 stars for being exactly what you would think: an upscale French restaurant in Georgetown. When it comes to Georgetown, it has a little bit of a reputation for being a little upscale and standoff-ish. After living here for more than a year now, I don't really mind the reputation when the venue delivers. Places like Chez Billy Sud, located on 31st Street near Washington Harbor, lives up to everything involved with that reputation. A friend and I decided to stop by Chez Billy to grab brunch one Sunday. The interior of the venue is kind of small and long with tables bunches together. The venue does have outside tables, but they are only open during warmer times and are gated off so that you can only enter from the interior (aka no dogs). However, both the inside and outside are well-decorated and have a pleasant French restaurant feel. Again, lives up to all aspects of the Georgetown reputation. My friend and I grabbed a seat and a waiter came up to take our order. The waiter was a little young, but fairly knowledgeable about the menu. He was also not great about checking on us at a regular rate and a tad standoffish...which is exactly the type of service I got while in Paris, so you can say that he was authentic. We decided to start off with a couple drinks and an appetizer. I got the bitter bees knees (solid) and some pate (also solid). The drink and appetizer came out relatively quickly and wasn't too expensive. We then moved on to our main course. I order the nova scotia, which was a small yet tasty dish that mixed various flavors well. We then finished with dessert. While they were out of the one dessert my friend requested, they brought out this ice cream dish that was delicious. They didn't charge us for the dessert since they didn't have the original request, which shows some good customer service that left us happy and ready to leave a little extra with our tip. Overall, Chez Billy Sud provided a good Georgetown French restaurant experience. read more
