Did you know that Cherry Creek Catfish makes one of the best hamburgers in Austin? Me neither. * * * Cherry Creek Catfish is an Austin Institution. It has been here since just about forever. On a Sunday you generally have to wait to get in ... even at 3 in the afternoon. It is one of the few places in Austin that has a really really diverse clientele. (Amaya's Taco Village and Buffet Palace are the two others I have found. Usually Austin restaurants belong to one group or another.) The crowd here is about 2/3 Hispanic, 1/6 Old White Austin, 1/6 New Yuppie Austin, 1/6 Black. The decorating and food are Old White Austin all the way. Why does everybody come here? Because the food is so damm good! * * * The place is known for its fried seafood - which makes up 2/3 of the menu. They are also known for one BBQ dish - BBQ Pork Ribs. Both the Ribs and the Sauce have won prizes. Then they got a bunch of other stuff. That other stuff is damm good because the kitchen is damm good. * * * Indicators of damm good. a) You order a plain old cup of coffee. In most Austin restaurants, the pot sits growing stale and you get an old and funky cup. You ask them to make it fresh and it comes out better. The coffee came out a nanosecond after I ordered it. It was perfect. They refilled my cup constantly. This is not a breakfast place that specializes in coffee. Everyone else was drinking soda and beer, I was the only coffee patron in the place. So even with like maybe a 0.3% chance of someone ordering coffee, they knocked themselves out to have a perfect pot waiting. b) The Chocolate Lover's Pie. One of the most sophisticated desserts you can get at Austin that is not served at an upscale Yuppie place with a price of $18. The Chocolate Pie is $3.99 and blows away any of the other desserts you get at the everyday places in town. The nearest competition is the Texas Cafe and Pie Shop in Hutto which makes absolutely legendary pies. If you haven't been to Hutto for pie, go. But in a head to head Hutto versus Cherry Creek Competition, Cherry Creek has some real merit. Hutto is all about over the top decadence. You have 900 amazing ingredients piled on a plate. You take one bite and you wanna go to heaven. Cherry Creek is simple subtle classicism. Chocolate mousse main layer. Whipped Cream on top. Chocolate dustings on top. Very thin pecan crust on the bottom. No one ingredient is particularly distinctive. BUT The pie is carefully curved. It is highest at the center. It is lowest near the edge. The mix of mousse to whipped cream changes with every change in the slope at the top. Plus the chocolate dustings are intentionally uneven. Some parts of the top have a lot. Some have less. So you get a pie that never never never tastes the same way twice. It is hard to predict how much chocolate dusting you are going to get, and each forkful has a different ratio of whipped cream to mousse. And then as you get near the end, the pecans slowly begin to make themselves known. I was completely fascinated. I would order that dessert again ... and again ... and again ... and again. * * * c) Now for the unexpected star item: the Hamburger. There are two ways other restaurants make a superior hamburger. a) Use a lot of superior beef, keep it medium rare and serve a super-steak. This is the Steakhouse Approach. OR b) Put a lot of exotic ingredients on the hamburger so you freak out over the crazy toppings. This is what Burger-Fi used to do in Circle C. * * * Cherry Creek doesn't pull any of those standard hamburger tricks. They do a very conservative, very classic hamburger. Ground beef. Toasted bun. Mustard. Lettuce. Tomato. Onion. Pickles. You have seen this 1000 times before. Furthermore, they cook the hamburger until it is absolutely well done. Virtually all of the meat taste is cooked out of the burger. Making a good hamburger with a well-done patty is nearly impossible. So how do they do it? Extraordinary execution on the non-hamburger items. The bun is perfectly buttered and toasted. The vegetables are all Sysco commercial vegetables. Nothing locally sourced or organic here. But they keep those vegetables very very very fresh. The lettuce, the tomato, the onion are all bright fresh wonderful specimens of what they are. The onions are 1015 - and 1015 at the prime stage of light onion-ness and sweetness. The hamburger itself serves the role of a bass player. It backs up the vegetables and gives them body. The fresh wonderful vegetables sitting on a yummy buttered bun do all the work of making an amazing sandwich. Super conservative design. But perfect perfect execution. I would order that hamburger a hundred million times. * * * But the fish at Cherry Creek Catfish looks really really tempting. And the ribs supposedly are famous. * * * There are a lot of people waiting on a Sunday to eat at Cherry Creek Catfish. One of them is very likely to be me. read more

I had a most unpleasant experience today at Cherry Creek. Cherry Creek has been my regular catfish restaurant for probably 5 years. I've eaten there at least 3 times a month during that period of time. I went today and ordered the catfish - shrimp combo with a salad. The meal was delivered before the salad. I asked for the meal to be kept until I finished my salad. My meal was then delivered incorrectly 3 three times. After the the third attempt, the Manager removed my meal, told me that it would be comped as a to go order but that I could not eat it there. I left before the to go order was delivered to my table. Voicing my unhappiness with the ineptitude of the staff apparently made me disruptive in an almost empty restsaurant. I do not believe it is unreasonable to expect a properly trained waiter to get my order correct once in three trys. I do not believe it is unreasonable for the manager to make sure that the newnstaff is properly trained before she sets them loose on the customers. My treatment today pretty much ends my relationship with Cherry Creek Catfish. Really a shame because it really does have good catfish and shrimp. Just a really bad Wednesday manager. In my opinion, she should be fired before she runs off any more loyal customers. read more

I cant believe I couldn't find my review for this place. This is my place to go for Catfish & there are only two places I would go for catfish. This place & a spot in bastrop called Maxines cafe. The staff is fabulous & friendly. They always have suggestions & favorite picks of their own. Service is quick & they are always on top of refills for your drinks. When you walk in there will be someone to take you to your seat. They have extra space in the back as well. Their portions are great for the prices and food is always super fresh. The catfish meat is a nice clean white & you can taste the difference from others. They have a full menu & everything I have tasted & those that have joined me say the same. They have these fried pickles that are the best because they're spears not sliced & the breading they use is perfect. All this food even taste great reheated. The fried shrimp is so yummy, fried mushrooms as well & even the hush puppies. There is more than one way to have the catfish and they're both delicious. Well worth the find, we had the Catfish Platter and let me just sat, the Catfish was delicious. It came with Cole Slaw, Beans and Fries. All the sides were delicious as well. Had 8pm dinner August 1st . Catfish pieces are smaller and the salad was soaking wet I could tip over the small dish and water would come pouring out . It took several napkins to dry the salad. Plus they give you your ice tea in a tall glass and put a tea spoon in to stir but you have to put your hands in the tea to get it out . read more

I have been going to this restaurant ever since I've moved to Austin. I no longer live in the neighborhood but I make a trip out to Cheery Creek Catfish now and again still. I just love their fried green tomatoes. They are not overly greasy and have a subtle spice to them. They also make good po-boy sandwiches and other catfish platters. I ordered the small catfish plate, which came with beans, hush puppies, coleslaw and chips (you have an option here for fries, chips or something else and I went with the chips) The fried fillets were tasty - lightly breaded... So nothing too heavy. The fish Was fresh and tasty. The chips with Cajun salt on them were the hidden gem. Very crispy and full of flavor. The hush puppies were a little disappointing, they were the ball type and were a little heavy and bland. The beans and coleslaw were average but still enjoyable. Last night was our second visit to Cherry Creek Catfish, and the service was amazing. The servers work as a team, and service is seamless and thorough. We had poboys for dinner (1 catfish and 1 shrimp). The catfish poboy was great, and both were served with delicious fries that are straight fries but taste like curly fries (yummmm). The reason I deducted 1 star is their fried shrimp. The batter is really bland on the shrimp, and they are not gulf shrimp (more like a butterflied shrimp). Better fried shrimp would make this place worlds better. We also had a small side of hush puppies, which were cooked perfectly with awesome flavor. The value of the poboy and great service will bring me back, and this time I will go with catfish because both times my shrimp experience was mediocre. We ordered the hamburger and the seafood feast which included coleslaw, okra(up charge), shrimp and crawfish gumbo, beans, 3 fried shrimp, 3 fried catfish, and 3 fried oysters plus hush puppies. My boyfriend said his burger was decent but not great. Neither of us ate the beans or coleslaw because that's not our thing. The fries were too soggy. All of the fried food seemed like it had been sitting out and was a little wet. The oysters were just okay so I wouldn't get again. The catfish and shrimp were good but could of had more Cajun flavor. The hush puppies and okra were super good. And lastly, the gumbo was AMAZING!
