This unassuming building has been home to several different restaurants in the 16 years we've been driving by. Most have been okay. Chen's is pretty good! The staff are friendly and courteous, and just walking in, the place smells delicious. Darling Bride got the King Pao chicken combo, and I got the Chicken with Schezuan sauce. Combos come with pork fried rice, and choice of a pork egg roll or soup. We opted for egg rolls AND soups, for an upcharge. My hot and sour soup was excellent- the broth had the perfect texture, that sort of thick, almost slippery, not quite gelid mouthfeel. You know what I mean. Lots of places screw that up, but not these guys. My Bride was pleased with her wonton soup- the broth wasn't salty, and the wontons were good. The egg rolls were expertly fried- piping hot and crisp, with fluffy cabbage and warm pork bits. Not at all greasy. I would have preferred hot mustard, but the duck sauce was good. My chicken was delicious; the vegetables were fresh and cooked well, and the meat was nice and tender. Darling Bride's Kung Pao was excellent, with lots of red and green peppers. The hot tea we got was good, even though it came as a bag in a cup, instead of in a pot. The server was quick to refresh it. The total for two combos, two soups, and tea for two was $24 including the tax, but before tip. We will certainly be back again!

We were staying at Chippokes Plantation SP and decided to try Chen's Asian grill. It was great. They were busy on this Friday night , but we were served quickly. Most of the customers (like us ordered their food to go) We had the spring rolls, chicken fried rice and the broccoli with garlic sauce. Our food was prepared quickly and the portions were generous- enough for leftovers. We will definitely return on our next trip.

This was the crab Rangoon someone raves about on Williamsburg recommendations. I can't.

I ordered the Kake Udon for me and two orders of steamed gyoza for my kiddo. I gotta say, I was surprised when the order arrived. The udon noodles were paper thin compared to what I'm used to. The fried tofu was so hard it was basically inedible, and the broth - well, it had little to no flavor. To top it off, my kiddo took a bite of one dumpling and then spit it out. This child DESTROYS dumplings, so I asked him what happened -- he said "who puts corn and carrots in a gyoza dumpling?!?" and I can't say I disagree with him. Pork and cabbage filling - duh! Overall, totally not our jam and we probably won't revisit it. I guess the reviews are based more on folks who haven't experienced true Japanese cooking? I don't know, but I'm pretty sure my Japanese host mother would have given it no stars.

There were a lot of different options on the menu. I opted for the yummy bowl where you get in line and pick your own ingredients, seasonings and sauces and the hibachi cooks make it and it is delivered to your table hot n fresh. It was so good! One thing to note is they do have signage that says if your bowl ends up needing a second bowl you will be charged the all you can eat price. That is why my bowl is a little skimp but I definitely could have added more things and been good!

How it works: Guests are seated, given a card to denote table number, name, rice preferences and special instructions, if any. Order drinks at the table. The server gives each person a bowl which you then go and fill with raw ingredients, buffet style. Your bowl, card and sauces are left on a tray. Once grilled by the hibachi chefs, the food is put on a bed of rice and returned to you steaming hot and delicious. Pricing: Regular dinner bowls are $15. For $5 more, you can convert your order to "all you can eat" and repeat the process, as my friend did. Fountain drinks are automatically bottomless. This was a really fun way to enjoy dinner with my friend. I would love to come back with her again sometime. My only criticism is, despite the appearance of the raw food being bright and fresh, the texture and taste gave the impression that much of the produce I had in my bowl was from frozen. And although the price was quite reasonable for a filling dinner meal, it always feels strange to me to pay the same amount for vegetables as someone loading up on shrimp/ squid/ beef/ chicken, etc. I wish there was a discount when forgoing animal remains. YES: Vegan friendly YES: Family friendly

The atmosphere: It's a small restaurant best suited for small groups, though there are a few tables that can accommodate larger parties. You order at the cashier and they bring the food to your table. There's also a self-serve drink station, and they provide free water cups that you can refill. The food: We started with the takoyaki and chicken karaage. The takoyaki was good, but fairly standard. The chicken karaage portion was generous, and the pieces were large. The coating was lighter than what I'm used to, which kept the chicken juicy, but it did make it a bit oily. I also wished there was more seasoning in the chicken or batter since I ended up relying on the spicy mayo sauce quite a bit. For my entree, I ordered the pork katsu with rice and tonkotsu sauce. It was fine, but nothing particularly memorable. I also would've preferred a slaw instead of just a few pieces of lettuce. Portions overall were big, and the dishes are definitely shareable. The service: Service was touch-and-go, very much a fast-casual setup.
