spouse and I just ate here 7/16/25 and well we never judge a place on appearance because we have found many hole in the wall restaurants that had amazing food! so we stayed to order. I got spring rolls definitely not homemade and did not come with any sauce, egg drop soup was Luke warm, sweet & sour shrimp was very very oily and the sauce wasn't cooked with it came in a saucer. My spouse got the sesame chicken and well that too flavor wise could have been different and his Bobba was warm and not tasting like taro at all. However the prices are very low! Ate here today based on a couple previous reviews. There is not much of a selection in Surry, VA to choose from, so I decided to give this place a chance. First impression was that the building is akin to a dump. Not nice at all and they play the worst music imaginable! The service was passable, but the lady was abrupt and did not engage any customers in a friendly manner while I was there. Maybe I ordered the wrong entree', but the chicken with veggies was not as good as I was expecting. This unassuming building has been home to several different restaurants in the 16 years we've been driving by. Most have been okay. Chen's is pretty good! The staff are friendly and courteous, and just walking in, the place smells delicious. Darling Bride got the King Pao chicken combo, and I got the Chicken with Schezuan sauce. Combos come with pork fried rice, and choice of a pork egg roll or soup. We opted for egg rolls AND soups, for an upcharge. My hot and sour soup was excellent- the broth had the perfect texture, that sort of thick, almost slippery, not quite gelid mouthfeel. You know what I mean. Lots of places screw that up, but not these guys. My Bride was pleased with her wonton soup- the broth wasn't salty, and the wontons were good. The egg rolls were expertly fried- piping hot and crisp, with fluffy cabbage and warm pork bits. Not at all greasy. I would have preferred hot mustard, but the duck sauce was good. My chicken was delicious; the vegetables were fresh and cooked well, and the meat was nice and tender. Darling Bride's Kung Pao was excellent, with lots of red and green peppers. The hot tea we got was good, even though it came as a bag in a cup, instead of in a pot. The server was quick to refresh it. The total for two combos, two soups, and tea for two was $24 including the tax, but before tip. We will certainly be back again! read more

There food is very good and they are very accommodating when due to my job I have to call a few hours early for my order and it's always hot and ready when I get there. The fried dumplings are the best I have had anywhere. The egg too young is also good. There is no ambiance but it is mostly takeout there. read more

REALLY GOOD!! We stumbled into Chen's Asian Grill, not a lot of options in Surry, and found some of the best Chinese take-out we have ever had. Food is good quality, meats are good quality, and everything we have tried there as been very tasty. We own a short-term rental property in the area and recommend Chen's to all of our guests, and we get take-out from there every time we are in town. Our favorites are the Mongolian Beef and the House Special Pancit. Highly recommend Chen's Asian Grill if you are looking for very good quality quick eats in Surry! read more

We were staying at Chippokes Plantation SP and decided to try Chen's Asian grill. It was great. They were busy on this Friday night , but we were served quickly. Most of the customers (like us ordered their food to go) We had the spring rolls, chicken fried rice and the broccoli with garlic sauce. Our food was prepared quickly and the portions were generous- enough for leftovers. We will definitely return on our next trip. read more

The food was hot and fresh. The waitress was wearing a mask which is a good sign to me. I thought the restaurant was unkept but the staff were friendly. No sauces were offered and none on the table. My aunt and I ordered the fried rice with vegetables. My daughter ordered the French fries. I also tried the melon boba tea as they were out of all the other flavors on their menu. Truly a unsuspecting gem in Surry! The food has always been delicious and the helpings are generous. Despite other reviews on the crab Rangoon, I actually love theirs. The only reason I withheld a star was because I really wish they picked another day to be closed, if a closure is necessary. For our small community to not have them as an option on Sundays is sad...it's the only decent food in town and we can't make it an easy lunch after church. read more

This was the crab Rangoon someone raves about on Williamsburg recommendations. I can't give it rave reviews. It has more dough that crab Rangoon. It's not high on my comparison list compared to other restaurants. It's a 1 for me I do not recommend it. The dough is tough like they cooked it and put it in a microwave to reheat. Make sure you have strong teeth when biting into it to pull the dough. read more

We were camping at Chippokes Plantation St Park, and there aren't a lot of choices for dining in the area. We were truly pleasantly surprised to not only find Chen's but that the food was exceptional and inexpensive. There were 4 of us who dined in. The portions were quite large and tasted freshly made. The service was fast for non-steam table food. I got the house special pancit (thin rice noodles). Having lived in the Philippines for 2 years, I was delighted to get an authentic taste again!
