What a classic diner! Walking in around 8:45am on a Wednesday in September, the booths were filled with older people chatting or reading the newspaper/books. In the background is the open kitchen. When you walk in, the staff will direct you to sit anywhere you like. Menus are already on the table near the condiment area. For under $13, I ordered the biscuits and gravy. Four small biscuits come drenched in sausage gravy. It was tasty, but the hot sauce on the table helped give it more flavor. It comes with two eggs and hash browns. The service feels very down to earth. You choose your seating. It's very diner feel and bit on the hole in the wall. Since I didn't have breakfast I ordered my staple of biscuits and gravy. I've driven by this diner /cafe and have always wanted to try it! The outside of the building is quite inviting with its colorful red, white and blue exterior! We were seated right away, and the place was busy! Our server was pretty "matter of fact" - no pleasantries or smiles! Let's get down to business and order our breakfast! Well okay! I do love diners like this one, no nonsense, 70's orange vibe, classic menu! The grits and eggs were great, my bacon didn't come out like I ordered it and our server put in for more, but it never came. They were busy, so no worries, she adjusted the bill. My favorite thing? When I first mentioned to my husband I wanted to try out Five Forks Cafe for breakfast he initially was hesitant as thinking it would be a fru-fru place being some high end cafe: I assured him that reading through the reviews the food was good and it was more like a diner then an upscale cafe. When you walk in you can see right back into the kitchen and the cooks were right there on the grill making the food. The place looks like your typical old-school diner you would find where you can sit at the counter and see your food being prepared. We were sat right away and had a very pleasant waitress who was as sweet as could be. We ordered the following food to try: Corn Cakes with honey butter: loved these! I didn't even use syrup just some of the honey butter. Great flavor. Sausage Gravy over biscuits: also good flavor. Nice spice. Pancake: We like them more fluffy but it was still good. Eggs, bacon and hash browns either came with our meals or were ordered as sides and they were all cooked well and yummy! They had a cinnamon roll as a special of the day and it was very good! We ordered the $12 reuben sandwich comes with crinkle fries, $8 bacon egg breakfast sandwich (they are charging .50 cents extra per egg! and this sandwich has 1 very thin egg), $6 onion rings, $3 coffee. Wow you will not leave here hungry. As others have said this is what it is, a straight forward diner. Something's do not have to be anything more than what the customers want. The eggs were cooked perfectly the coffee was a mild roast. I do agree with the cleaning comments and change out stained ceiling tiles that are stained and maybe some new blinds. How in the hell does this place get 4 stars? The restaurant itself could use an update. It is old and tired, but more importantly it could use a deep cleaning. I don't mind a local joint with some character but it has to be clean. The food was nothing great. Frozen burger patties, frozen fries...nothing made from scratch. Our server was friendly but the service was incredibly slow. Our food sat in the window for an extended time and was cold by the time we received it. The worst offense was watching a server take food off of one plate with her bare hands, put it on a different plate and then serve it to a customer. Yuck! Stopped on our way to Jamestown and Williamsburg as it seemed out of the way and not your typical tourist spot. We were right on all accounts and couldn't of been more pleased. Generous portions of home cooked meals with genuine hospitality. A word of warning though; the 'breakfast sandwich' will feed 3 and as good as mom will ever make. While they don't appear special in any way the onion rings were tender and delicious and the generous portion seemed to disappear with everyone having to try them over and over. Great little diner. It's my son's favorite breakfast place in the area. Everything is always good and reasonably priced.

Wife and I had the mushroom Swiss burger. She had the onion rings and I had the fries. Also ordered a side of fried okra. My burger was great. It had fantastic seasoning and the fries were also equally seasoned. The okra seemed to have little to no seasoning. The wife's onion rings were delicious as well. There are some foods that, when I see them on the menu, I must try it. Country Fried Steak is one such food. At FFC, it's only on the breakfast menu, so I need to get there early to try it. Three days ago I had the chance. Sitting at the bar, I ordered Coffee, CFS, and Corn Cakes. They were busy; I had perhaps a 15 minute wait for my food to come up. No worries; I was in no hurry. The Coffee was good, as usual. The CFS, generously doused with gravy, was good. I ate and enjoyed every bite, but it's not good enough for me to repeat. And the Corn Cakes. I believe, that in my 60+ years, I've never had Corn Cakes. Basically, I think, pancakes made with cornmeal instead of flour. I was first struck by how dry they were. So I slathered on butter. That helped, but still too dry for my taste. I requested syrup and was given a cruet of HFCS. Use sparingly. Still too dry. So half-eaten, I abandoned the Corn Cakes. I was full, so I headed out. I love this place and will certainly return, but now I know what not to order. If I get there early, I'll have the Greek Omelette for breakfast; if i arrive later I'll have one of the many sandwiches I've not yet tries. read more

My love for cornbread but my dislike of pancakes had me on the fence whether to order. I took the leap of faith and got it with the corned beef hash and eggs. Loved the corncakes with syrup and corned beef was the traditional type that prepared me for my long exploration day in Colonial Williamsburg. We had the sausage biscuit and gravy combination with loaded hash browns (mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and delicious cheddar cheese). The food was amazing. We enjoyed fresh brewed coffee with our meal This location is quaint and homey. You have a main waitress but they all work together to keep your coffee cup full and your food served piping hot. A nice flow of great customer service. We drove an hour to try this restaurant and it was worth it. You will love anything you select. We saw people ordering a bit of everything on the menu, all smiles and giggles as we all ate as much as we could. Most people leave with rake - out dishes because the portions are huge.
