This is an extremely belated review. I went to college in Williamsburg and Five Forks was a regular spot for me and my friends. I moved to New York after graduating and it has now been ten years since I had the privilege of a hungover Five Forks breakfast, but I still think about it often. That's how good it was. One day I hope to be passing through...I will order biscuits and gravy, a breakfast sandwich on sourdough, corn cakes, and Greek fries, and eat until I pass out in a booth. You can just stash me in a supply closet until I come to. read more

Amazing place for cheap college students. Their breakfast prices are so highly affordable, and their portions are huge. A chocolate pancake (about the size of a middle age man's face) is only $2.75! I would also recommend going for a side of Loaded Hash Browns because it's cheesy goodness (but there are some veggies in it so you get the illusion of healthiness lol). Breakfast also runs until 3pm, so don't worry about getting there so early! Great for a late brunch while you're nursing a hangover. The service is relatively fast, but it's a small dinner. The wait can be 15 minutes to get seated, and about 20 for your food on a busy day! Unless there's a huge event (like WM Homecoming), do not worry about slow service. A few weeks ago, I was really hoping this would be the mom and pop I wanted it to be. It wasn't bad. The food was typical diner food. Nothing to complain about. The inside is very tight knit which was okay as well but maybe something to note for those who may be looking for more privacy or quieter/less dense atmosphere. Where the stars were lost is the service. I want to say that our server took care of us and checked on us when she could, I don't doubt for a second her ability to take care of a table technically. However, the table next to us had food go back thrice. A larger group of two adult couples and their smaller children came in within the last hour of them being open. They had visitor stickers from the historic triangle so I'm assuming they had finished up a morning there. The server was not happy (understandably, been in the industry a while myself and not a situation you wanna find yourself in when you're ready to go home). However, this industry is about care and hospitality and at the end of the day, customers are responsible for providing tipped income and continuing business. The server was uncomfortably vocal about her frustration with 1.) the children (they were all very young toddler-1st gradeish) and 2.) them being there while she could be closing up (there were still most of the tables occupied at varying stages in their meal so it's not like she's getting off as soon as we cash out anyway). She mentioned it to another guest at a nearby table that she was frustrated about them coming in within the last hour (again, understandable, but these are go-in-the-walk-in-and-scream scenarios not "go share with your guests negativity about other guests who are there for a meal and being respectful"). It was not a very friendly or welcoming tone and kind of ruins the novelty of mom and pops when you feel like you're one wrong scenario away from being an inconvenience to the staff in places that generally make you feel like family. I hope she was just having a rough day and this isn't the norm, not sure if I'll try it again, maybe later down the road we'll give it another shot. read more

It is truly a local dining spot, indicative of old style diners. The breakfast was good and came in a timely fashion. Had the blueberry pancakes and scrapple. It was a spam like side dish with a little crunchier exterior and pork and corn meal inside. Not bad, but certainly not your typical fare. 2 blueberry pancakes and scrapple ran about $12 with tax. No beverage included. My only disappointment were the ceiling vents that were very dirty. Regardless of Covid, they should be cleaned occasionally! read more

Five Forks Diner Cafe is a great small local spot. You get that home town diner vibe. This place is my go to when I have family and friends in town. My spouse says they have the best biscuits & gravy. The portions are plenty. They are only open for breakfast & Lunch hours and serve all your favorite breakfast lunch meals. A picture is worth a thousand words.. I enjoy sitting at the bar watching the chef's go to town. (I feel like Norm on Cheers now) I always sit in the same spot. They have the same small # of employees which I like. They are very personable, professional and courteous. read more

I went today for the first time! Small place, not impressive atmosphere but really good breakfast! I got my bacon extra crispy and it was wonderful. I'd never had corn cakes in my life but they were delicious and I'd get them again. The waitress was sweet. Service was fast and prices were very reasonable. Only negative: probably not the cleanest place in the world. I can't wait to go back and try more on the menu! read more

I was looking for a local place for a southern meal. This fit the bill. An obvious favorite of locals. The buttermilk fried cat fish was so tender and fresh. I had the savory and flavorful black eyed peas and fried okra for sides. So good and filling. Staff friendly and attentive. read more

Breakfast in Wmsburg? Throw a rock, you'll hit one! A search on anywhoDOTcom shows 219 listings! But, my friends, get thee colonial arse over to Five Forks Cafe for an awesome, home-style breakfast! This place is run by owners/chefs Heidi and Jason Steeg. Heidi's the baker, Jason's on the grill. Wifey found the place by searching for "best sausage & biscuits". And indeed they were. Heidi makes them fresh daily, and they were crispy & light, and slathered in a peppery, creamy, sausage gravy. Yum! I had Jason's Garlic, Parmesan, Mushroom, Mozzarella Omelet - and it was killer! Along with a side of the best patty sausage I've ever had in a diner, the home fries are crispy, big chunks of potatoes seasoned just right. The servers were very friendly, service was fast for a busy little place, and Heidi even came over to say hello. You won't find this incredible breakfast in those big, cattle-call style waffle houses in town. It's a short drive to the edge of town, and well worth it! read more

I really don't understand what all the hype is over this place. I've been twice. The food has been average and the service subpar on both occasions. It's kind of hard to mess up breakfast, and they did not disappoint in that area. My 3 egg omelette this morning was pretty good. For about $7, you choose 3 ingredients to add to it- I chose mozz, mushrooms and ham. It was served with toast that was (in my opinion) over-buttered. The pancakes look really good- one of my dining companions said her banana nut cakes were excellent. Both times I've been, which have been late Saturday mornings, there has been a wait of 15-30 minutes. I've had the same server both times and she does not seem to have any motivation to be friendly. This time in particular she just acted as though she didn't want to be there. For instance, we would thank her and she wouldn't even respond to us, not even a nod or glance of acknowledgement. The attitude of the server can really make or break my opinion of a restaurant. I will say that I noticed the other server working was cheerful and laughing with her tables, so I've just been unlucky. I'll also say that our server made sure our coffees weren't empty. But seriously- take the frown off your face and stop acting so miserable! As for the space of the restaurant itself, it definitely fits the classic diner mold. Warm and cozy (but can get crowded with people waiting for seats). read more

September 21 From the outside, Five Forks Cafe looks like an abandoned 7-11 or Highs convenience store though our 5 star server, Sherie, thinks it has always been Five Forks Cafe. The inside reveals a divy little cafe with some great food. When I saw the Shrimp & Grits on the menu I thought, no way these guys could get it right. Well, I was wrong. The grits had a rich & creamy flavor. The shrimp were NOT over cooked, which is the most common problem with Shrimp and Grits. The Andoulle Sausage added just enough heat. My amazing wife, Lisa, thought the chili was "beef & beans" great with just enough cheese on top. The serving size was very generous, as well. She thinks we should come back tomorrow. Maybe After telling our new favorite server, Sherie, how much we loved the food, she told us her favorite was the hamburgers. No, she didn't just mention them; she raved about them. So that is where we will begin on our next visit. Great little place I wish we had in Fredericksburg. read more

This is a true local gem in Williamsburg. A majority of the guests here are regulars and the service is good too. It is a total dive diner with old school booths that have seen a few years between them. The servers too seem to be here since forever! But that means good service and good food, coz the place is generally always crowded. True to the reviews, food is good! Among their offerings, we like the following - Corn cakes with honey butter - YUMMMM! Grits - true southern style, needs a dash of salt and butter on top. Okay so I choose this as a restaurant to visit on a recent trip to Williamsburg based on all the Yelp reviews I had read. I was pretty sure I wanted breakfast for lunch since so many people raved about breakfast but at the last minute changed to lunch. Three words: Fried Chicken Gyro. So yummy! Service was good. There's a reason this place has a 4(+) star rating. I is exactly what a diner is supposed to be about - great food, a wait staff that's perhaps a bit distant, lousy coffee. Our experience this morning validated the great food and, for us at least, put to rest complaints about the staff. (In their defense, if you had to put up with some of the riffraff who wander into a place like this, you might be a little short once in a while too. Still, that's no excuse for being nasty, but in my experience more often than not the patron might have acted a bit more civilized as well. These folks work long hours for pitifully low pay - give them a break, for goodness sake.) And yes, the coffee is lousy, but this isn't Starbucks. My wife is a bacon and eggs person at breakfast, so her meal wasn't out of the ordinary. On the other hand, based on what I'd read here, I was ready to do some damage to a stack of corn meal pancakes. But then I spotted the weekend specials, one of which was Eggs Benedict, and that was as far as I went. Eggs Benedict are my weakness, and I figured that if everyone thought the food here was great, what did I have to lose? Not a thing, it turns out. In fact, while the dish itself was a little different than I might have expected, it certainly didn't disappoint. There was probably enough ham - hey, it's Virginia - to make a decent ham sandwich and still have enough left over to go with eggs. But none of that mattered, because the Hollandaise sauce was likely the best I've ever had. Eggs Benedict usually fail for me because the sauce is poorly done for whatever reason, but the cashier told me that their sauce is homemade from scratch on the premises. She was anxious finish her shift so she could go have some herself!! So, if you're in that area at breakfast or lunch time, it's well worth your time and effort to bypass Williamsburg's omnipresent pancake houses and give yourself a treat. read more

Williamsburg has, literally, DOZENS of breakfast places up and down Richmond Rd, sprawling from the Colonial area, through the Outlet Mall, and on to Busch Gardens. That said, most have a distinctly chain/cookie cutter feel (I mean, how many variations can there possibly be of the Super Huge Ginormous Monstrosity Pancake House?!?) and serve roughly the exact. same. thing. After a handful of disappointments, the wife and I went on a deliberate mission for something with more character and a discernible pulse. Thankfully, our friends at Yelp turned us onto Five Forks and we really haven't looked back since. Five Forks is a home town dive diner at heart with a casual, homey feel. The menu has all of the standard norms (e.g. egg plates, omelettes, pancakes, etc.) that are all tasty, but what really sets them apart in my mind is their incredibly diverse daily specials. On our last trip it was Jerk Pork with Fried Plantains, Scrambled Eggs, Hash Browns, and a Cheese Quesadilla (all for $9.99). The pork was tender and flavorful while the plantains were soft and just sweet enough to not be dessert worthy...not to mention, how many "hole in the wall" diners have a Jerk Pork breakfast special?!? Points for creativity AND quality! My main detractors are 1) that the service can be spotty at times, both in friendliness and speed and 2) if you happen to hit them on a less than creative day with the specials, the menu is a little boring for the more festive palates. All in all, particularly given options in the area, Five Forks Cafe is our go-to for breakfast. Even if the specials are lacking, they have more character and flavor than most, and at incredibly competitive prices, and do not look, act, or feel like a chain. read more

Stopped in for the first time. First impression was a nice neighborhood greasy spoon. The kid was hungry for a chicken sandwich. Started with cheese sticks, I must say anything fried is awesome. The wife had chili and mashed potatoes, they were good. Our little one had fried chicken sandwich and fries and she loved it. (No seasoning on fries) I had the bacon cheeseburger and fries and the only thing missing was a chocolate shake, so I subbed a Heineken. Perfect. My burger was cooked perfectly as I asked and the fries were good. Heineken was real cold. Great service and the prices are real reasonable. I want to go back and try breakfast. read more

I travel frequently for work and have developed an affinity for local diners to get what I call Real Food. Based on a locals recommendation I ate at Five Forks today for breakfast. Its a typical little diner that hasn't changed it's decor since the 70s but it's clean and comfortable. My waitress seated me and took my beverage order without the smile and friendly chatter that I usually see in diners, especially down south. But she returned promptly and as she set my drink down I said I was ready to order. She looked at me, said ok and walked away. When she came back a few minutes later I ordered corned beef hash, crispy, two fried eggs, whole wheat toast and what was listed on the menu as Cheddar Grits. My food came out in a reasonable time; all the items where nice and hot and the hash and eggs were properly cooked per my request. My first observation was that the toast was thicker than at most diners and had real butter on it! Nice! Then I noticed that the grits looked more like cream of wheat and whatever it was it certainly had nothing that resembled cheddar cheese in it. Tasting this concoction confirmed that it was not any kind of grits that this Southern Boy has ever encountered. Oh well. Next! As stated, the hash was cooked perfectly for me but the flavor was off somehow and not something I would recommend. The eggs were cooked correctly and were, okay. Nothing special for sure. I would like to say that the service was very good but, alas, I cannot tell a lie. After dropping off my food I didn't see my waitress again until I had finished my food and was waiting for the check. She wasn't rude, just not at all attentive. To add another negative, the bill for this mediocre meal was $15. I can't recommend Five Forks Cafe. Especially in an area that I know has some very good restaurants. read more

Amazing greasy spoon! The tile is so worn in this place that the top layer is chipped on the corners. Drop ceilings. Big assed griddle. "Order up!" hollered regularly by the cooks. Super nice staff. We had time to kill and went out for breakfast/lunch and the food here is killer. Literally. Nobody ate healthy and I don't care. This place is awesome! read more

Hours on yelp and google are wrong- place closes at 3. All the food was amazing and the service really good. The rouben was the best I've had in a long time - they crisp up the corn beef before making the sandwich. Burger and scrapple and eggs were excellent too. Oh my gosh! Do you want to know why there's a long line on Sunday mornings? It's because the food here is FABULOUS! I only get the pancakes because they are so great that I can't pass them up. They are just like Mom made-- large, crispy on ends but a little fluff in the middle. My friends/family have ordered various egg dishes (scrambled, over easy, omelet) and they've never complained. We stopped by for lunch. This was a true diner experience, with 90s country playing the whole time. We got a bacon burger and a blt, and both are good. The crinkle fries are never my favorite, but were well seasoned and delicious. Thumbs up on the blt, and the burger, though well done, really hit the spot. Went for an early lunch today and was pleasantly surprised. It's a bit of a dive but the customer service was excellent, Friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious. We tried the steak and cheese, and the BLT. We preferred the BLT and onion rings. When I asked the cashier if it was a family business, he said "sort of, if we aren't related we treat each other like family." Many of the customers we saw are obviously regulars because they hugged the waitresses as they walked in to the restaurant. We will definitely be back. read more

Don't let the slightly grungy exterior deter you. This is the real deal. Great service and excellent, home style but better than home cooked food. Two of us had salads, which were fresh, crunchy and delicious, with perfectly tangy homemade dressings. The chili has a hint of gaminess, which I liked a lot. The grilled cheese is just the way you want it: Golden and crispy-chewy. Do yourself a favor and stop for breakfast or lunch. read more

We were staying nearby on a family vacation, and we wound up having both dinner and breakfast here at Five Forks (not on the same day! the portions are large, I wouldn't recommend trying that unless you get up early!) Between the five of us we ordered a number of different things, and it was all tasty. Really seemed like home cooked food, and plenty of it. And the breakfast was excellent. Eggs were cooked perfectly (both poached and in an omelette). The service was super-friendly and helpful with our large group. I'd totally eat here again and again if I lived closer! read more

This place was very crowded, which is usually a good sign! We were seated promptly despite the lunch rush. I ordered the two eggs, hash browns and toast and added a pancake. My husband got the platter of eggs, bacon and pancake. I didn't expect the portions of egg, hash browns and toast to be so generous! There were four slices of toast (sourdough, I think)! The hash browns were very good - you could taste the grease from sausage cooked on the griddle. Overall, good food and timely service. @$22 before tip. read more

For hospitality I give this place 4 because they were very accommodating to me and my toddler who required a high chair and was blocking the aisle. This diner more so is very small inside. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak after learning that they did not have catfish at this location. The food from what I can see if not your home fries from scratch but the powdered shredded greasy ones. My mom said her grits had no taste and were too thick. My cheesesteak lacked enough grease and was not chopped well. Now my cousin had the special which I should have ordered a strawberry pound cake French toast and said it was divine. I for sure should have ordered that...such a clever spin on regular degular pound cake. I also like seeing my check written out like prices for each meal or item ordered. I simply received a $44 bill for a cheesesteak and one kids meal of dollar pancakes. This is an old school establishment everything written out and reminds me of a Waffle House but not my cup of tea. read more
