The waterfront location is really the only thing that sets this restaurant apart. The view definitely adds to the experience, but it feels like the restaurant relies too heavily on it and lets too many other aspects fall short. Parking is very limited, and the wait system is practically nonexistent. For a restaurant that regularly has long waits and doesn't accept reservations, I expected a much better process. The host staff was short and unfriendly with our party of four and couldn't even provide a rough wait time. Service throughout the meal was slow. My water glass had lipstick stains around the rim, which was pretty off-putting. My father ordered a beer that didn't arrive until after our food, and by then we had honestly forgotten he had ordered it. We also weren't given appetizer plates before our appetizer was brought out. We ended up getting up and finding plates ourselves. The food was fine, but nothing memorable. Considering the prices, I expected much better quality. It honestly wasn't any better than what you'd get at a casual fish and chips restaurant. The waterfront view is beautiful, but it wasn't enough to make up for the service, cleanliness, and overall dining experience. Unfortunately, we won't be returning. read more

Surry Seafood is an excellent place for lunch. It's a real destination to enjoy views of the tranquil water. They offer the same menu at lunch and at dinner, as well as some specials, which are posted on the chalk board when you enter the restaurant. The crab and shrimp quesadilla is huge and delicious. The crab cake sandwich on a potato bun also is quite good. It comes with fries too. There are lots of choices for food and beverages at Surrey Seafood, and it's a very popular place. We go early to ensure we can get a table without waiting. Even if we had to wait, it's well worth it. read more

The birthday guy loves the water and requested a seafood dinner with a view so remembering I had a good time on my birthday some years back didn't hesitate to take a drive down 64E to @the_surry_seafood_company. I also wanted us to ride the #jamestownscotlandferry which offers a free lift to Surry Co while taking in some beautiful waterside views! From the time we came in until we left, impeccable customer care! There was about a 30-60 minute wait for seating tho we preferred to sit outside we opted for inside to cut the wait time. Our waitress Bo was super friendly and professional ensuring we had everything we needed from drinks to our entrees in a timely fashion. Appetizers: crab dip, oysters rockefeller, chicken wings all very good (wings a bit pricey imo). We all mostly ordered the Seafood platter(fried fish, shrimp, crab cake and scallops) which was plentiful and fresh. It was a beautiful day so I was shocked there wasn't a big wait when we arrived at 4:40PM Saturday. Well maybe it's the decline in service. Our server Sara was VERY lacking in care and decorum. You NEVER reach across a diner. Rude. She also made assumptions about my sides order instead of saying mama you get two options instead gave me double fries. Why? The soft shell crabs were heavily breaded and greasy. Not good!!! We also asked if we could order a side of fried oysters, she never answered our request. This place to me was worth it for the view alone. The food was not super impressive. But the crab soup was delicious. They were very generous with the chunks of crab meat. The shrimp was good. However, the coleslaw and hush puppies weren't the best. The hush puppies were dry and the coleslaw just was kind of disappointing and bland. The fried oysters were also not the best. But the staff was really nice and friendly. We drove about an hour from Richmond to try this place out. Heard that they were dog friendly, and brought our dog. And they took us to this section of the patio they have designated as the dog friendly section. And brought us a bowl of water for her. We had an incredible view of the water and surrounding nature from where we were sitting. It's so beautiful and peaceful out there. The staff were great. And the service was really fast. read more

Not sure why the rating is so low! Family came here after crossing on the Jamestown-Scotland ferry thing and this place was packed and looked great. Ordered buffalo wings app, salmon salad, the specials: blacked combo of tuna, scallops, and shrimp, and rainbow trout which both came with two sides, and I ordered the fish and chips. This was a totally excellent experience. First of all, to drive on the Ferry to get to Surry County was exciting. Looking out on the James River was absolutely beautiful, and FREE. After reaching the other side it's maybe a couple of miles to reach this very cute and delicious restaurant. The hostess was friendly and we were seated immediately. There is no bad seat, because all have views of the James River with outdoor seating as well. Private boats docked right off of the boat walk. I ordered buffalo wings as an appetizer. The wings were crispy and sauced perfectly. PERFECT !!!. Next the Fried Flounder, Fries, Cole slaw, and hush puppies with a delicious cocktail called "End Of Summer Blues". Delicious!!!! Oh yeah back to the food. The fish was golden brown, very lightly battered with the evidence of being fresh, not prepackaged frozen. Ok, the fork went in getting a crunch and after reaching my mouth, I smiled with a oooooh this is good. The slaw was FRESHLY made and delicious. The fries were golden brown but didn't have the Potato taste of approval that fries shoukd have. They just tasted different. I'll order something else on the Next visit. The server was busy but gave all of her customers that one on one excellent customer service. I also ordered to go a peice chocolate cake that was small, but absolutely delicious. Here is a tip if you are in the Williamsburg area. Take the Jamestown-Scotland ferry (free) across the James River to Surry and treat yourself to a delicious seafood dinner at the Surry Seafood. We got on the ferry by accident and a worker said we should go to the restaurant for lunch. What a great time! Husband had the scallop dinner and I had the blackened special with scallops, shrimp and tuna in Cajun butter sauce. The sides were delicious, too, roasted squash, fried apples! Don't miss the excellent tartar sauce. It was great on fries. We ate inside overlooking the deck and water. The service was great, too. This is the meal that makes a vacation special. We went there on July 3. They had two servers and there was an hour and a half wait. We finally got a table and then after 30 more minutes of waiting for a waitress to walk over we walked out. I'm sorry, but if you don't have enough staff, you should close for the day. You should put something on your website as a warning. It's not easy to get to. It's like an hour drive to get to this place. What a complete waste of everyone's time. Absolutely poorly run and managed and I hope it goes bankrupt so as not to inconvenience more families like ours. read more

For our eighth anniversary, my wife planned a visit to the Surry Seafood Company. I was very surprised. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. Staff sat us down close to the window. Wow, what a beautiful view of Grays Creek! I ordered a pink lemonade (adult beverage), which was just right, and the Cajun pasta with chicken and shrimp, was awesome, and I added a splash of Tabasco sauce for a little heat. For dessert, I had pumpkin cheesecake with pecans and praline topping. I was done for after that. I was so impressed! What a great time! Very clean. Stopped at this place on way home from hunting nearby WMA. It had an amazing view and was pretty busy with bikers and hunters so we didn't feel underdressed. My husband and I were served by a very friendly bartender who made great recommendations (the special Ham biscuits were definitely worth a try!) We also enjoyed local beers and the Surry old fashioned (made with a local whiskey.) Definitely try the Crab Soup - which has the most ridiculously generous chunks of crab meat. We drive here from Richmond to try this place out. Walking in we were greeted and it was about a 30-45 mins wait. We ended up sitting at the bar. They were busy but it wasn't a lot of tables full so I'm guessing the kitchen was backed up. The manager/bartender/waitress was amazing and was handling everything professionally and effectively. We ordered the surf and turf and needless to say it wasn't great. There was no seasoning on either steak, the shrimps were bland and my mashed potatoes were terrible. I had to send my steak back bc it wasn't well done and opted for a baked potato. All in all, the food wasn't what we expected and could use some flavoring. We probably won't be back. read more

Stopped with our dog to have lunch on the patio and there was a dog loose in the parking lot named Sheba. Not friendly to our dog. Continued to bark and growl at our car. Went inside and asked several employees for help or if they could call owner. Said dog was from up the street couldn't do anything about it. This place is remote but so crowded, no one could consider it hidden! It's obviously a well-known place for locals. The wait was an hour for dinner at 7:00 pm on a Saturday evening. We were seated after about 50 minutes. I was VERY impressed with the hostess. She was very patient and professional with the folks who kept pressing her about how much longer they'd have to wait for a table. She's a pro! We were seated and had already perused the menu while we waited so we were ready to order (and hungry) when we sat down. Our server was Mashonda and she was friendly and helpful, despite being incredibly busy. The menu had a very good variety of selections and specials. The food arrived quickly and was cooked perfectly. It was delicious! It's easy to see why it's a local favorite. The two reasons they get 4 stars and not 5 is because the tables are packed too close together. That meant we could hear every conversation around us as if we were all sitting at the same table. The other reason is because there are no bussers to clean the tables. The servers do it and they're already run ragged. They really don't have the time to offer good service AND bus tables. Management should really consider hiring bussers. No one likes to see so many dirty tables around. I'd go back but not on a busy Saturday night. The food was worth the trek from Newport News, but I'd prefer to enjoy my dinner in a cleaner and quieter environment. read more

We took the ferry over from Jamestown and then drove around exploring. We needed up here for a quick meal. It was ok. My husband was not impressed, but I kinda liked it. Maybe it was the ambiance of eating outside with the view of the water. The food was not too bad. My son had the kid's macaroni and cheese. It was Kraft macaroni and cheese with melted cheese in top. Meh. The crab cake was pretty good. I enjoyed the baked potato side and the mixed vegetables. Perfect light meal. The Philly steak was ok. Bread was nice on it. We did not enjoy the artichoke dip. The pita rounds were fried in grease. Would have tasted way better not fried. The fish and chips lacked flavor. Our waitress was kind and helpful when choosing something to eat. We have visited twice in hopes of improvement. Unfortunately it's a seafood joint that makes overcooked shrimp! The Grits and hush puppies were a letdown as well which is hard to do. I won't speak to all of the servers, but two in particular were probably in the wrong profession. One of them was pushing customers to give their entire out after just sitting down, so she didn't have to make so many trips....yes she told people that. we went for our anniversary. It was ok. I got fried seafood combo plater. It was extremely greasy. I had to ask twice for lemon for my fish. It had no taste except for grease. I also ordered a house salad. It was wilted and not as fresh as it could be. I didn't even eat it. He got blackened scallops. he said they were amazing. His mashed potatoes were cold and dry. My husband and I went tonight for di ner for my birthday. We just sat at the bar to order a drink and dinner. To the left of my husband was dirty plates and glasses sitting on the bar. They were never cleared off the whole time we sat there. Employees continued to walk on by and never cleared it. I talked all week about going to Surry Seafood for my birthday dinner and it was ruined. Food was OK. Not terrific. The food was good. I got the chicken and shrimp Alfredo and crab lobster. Around $10 for soup and $20 for pasta. Onions rings were mediocre. Not too many vegetarian options but they made the crab quesadilla into a cheese quesadilla to accommodate us. Around $12 for cheese quesadilla. Drinks were strong. Customer service was weird. Maybe because we were seated soo close to closing but we felt rushed to order and eat. And it was just our waitress that had weird energy. It was the entire staff. It was worth the wait and makes for a lovely outing from Williamsburg when you take the ferry. We enjoyed sitting on the deck.

We drove to Jamestown and tried to find a at around a roadblock, so we went down this road and ended up on a ferry! Well, what are you to do but take the ferry over to Surry and explore. It was time for dinner so we came to The Surry Seafood Company: a great location at the end of a road where people live. It is on the James River and has beautiful views. My wife got a Crab Cake and I got the Fish and Chips. The food was good, service was very good, and the setting was awesome read more
