I really wanted to like this place, but Peking Restaurant in Williamsburg just did not deliver. It's a buffet with a decent variety of dishes, but most of the food sits in chafing dishes that aren't kept properly heated, so everything ends up lukewarm and just... mid. The atmosphere didn't help either. It feels a bit run-down, and the waitresses were not attentive at all. What really sealed the deal for me, though, was the cleanliness--or lack of it. The floor and carpeting were filthy, and I'm not even going to get into what the restrooms looked like. If the areas customers can see are that dirty, I don't want to imagine what the kitchen looks like. For me, that's an automatic no. I won't be going back. read more

I remember stopping here last time we were in Williamsburg. On the road again, we naturally stopped at Peking Restaurant. The buffet is definitely a better alternative to fast food chains. It offers nearly every type of food you can think of-vegetables, beef, chicken, shrimp, mussels, clams, noodles, dumplings, rice, pizzas, soups, and desserts-though the dishes are neither exceptional nor authentic. For the price of a hamburger, you get a wide variety. The service was attentive and pleasant, and the price was very affordable. The restaurant is large and decorated in a traditional Chinese style. **Take Out Order Review** We ordered the Wonton Soup, Shrimp Fried Rice and Sweet & Sour Chicken. The Wonton Soup was perhaps the best I've ever had. The broth was full of flavor and the dumplings were perfect. The Shrimp Fried Rice and the Sweet and Sour chicken were good, but we've had better. We've actually had better from this location. It seems that the quality of the food has decreased over the last few years. It seems like the quantity of food being prepared has taken precedence over the quality of the food. The restaurant uses an online ordering system called ChowNow. Beware as the system added $ to the menu prices listed on their website. An additional $1 was added for our order of Wonton Soup and $2.50 for the Shrimp Fried Rice. We did not notice the price difference until we picked up our order and saw the restaurant order ticket totaled a different among than what we paid using the ChowNow payment system. This place is located in an older strip mall with lighting and lots of parking. The building and designer elements look older and could use some updating. The buffet has a lot of options. The staff is friendly and quick. The food is average. But the bathrooms. OMG. They are discussing, dirty, stink so awful, are falling apart, and holy mold! I found Peking Buffet's experience to be a mix of highs and lows. The service was satisfactory, the price was wallet friendly, and ingredients were fresh. Food however was so-so. Meat dishes tastes fresh but not as expected; for instance the general tso's chicken were sitting in a thin liquid sauce and tasted more boiled than wok fried. Veggetarian dishes were decently cooked but some again lacked the taste I normally associate with the dish. They had some seafood (shrimp, muscles, and clams) but lacked more fish options. They also had a sushi section but I was unsure how long the food had been sitting there. The standout was undoubtedly the Mongolian BBQ - you gather the fresh ingredients yourself, lather on sauce, and a nice and proficient chef will cook it super quick for you on a hot round cooktop. Down side is you have to flavor it yourself which could lead to some unsavory combinations. If you are unsure of how to flavor things, I suggest a nice portion of garlic, some ginger, a couple of ladles of mongolian bbq sauce, some rice wine, some seaseme oil, and some spicy sauce accordingly to your spice tolerance. The restaurant also has some interesting Chinese decor. I wasn't able to look at them too closely to check out their authenticity, but they definitely add a level of uniqueness and interest to this otherwise run-of-the-mill chinese buffett. read more

For an all-you-can-eat place, it's not bad! The variety is very good here - even your starches - different rice and noodle options. I noticed a variety of soups and even desserts - all in addition to the entrees and vegetable sides. There is a separate Mongolian grill area that we didn't go to because the other options were plentiful. The service was good as well. The only thing about the restaurant is that it's dark in there. Otherwise - we enjoyed our meals. Make sure you have a good appetite if choosing this one. I'll be back. read more

What a treat! If you're looking for a tasty spot for the family I highly recommend Peking Restaurant... The restaurant has beautiful and traditional Asian inspired decor, a super friendly staff, and very good/hot/fresh food! One of the best buffets I've been to in quite sometime; a ton of choices, flavorful sauces, quality ingredients...something for everyone!!! I tried a number of different items and really enjoyed them all (the sushi was my least favorite, but I would go back for the hot buffet and Korean BBQ which is most of the choices anyway). A few personal favorites were the fried dumplings, the baby bokchoi, spicy Korean pork, miso soup, and the crispy chicken choices (general Tso's, honey, orange). Typically, all the sauces are all together in large quantities. They had some sauces all over and many were packets - lost time. The sushi, though good, was served via some weird conveyor belt style - two pieces per tiny plates. The wait staff was pleasant enough but the food was cold and ill-prepared. I told the wait staff at the buffet line but they just laughed behind my back. After the bill was paid our server told me that it was too bad i didn't tell her because she would have microwaved the plate of food for me. The food was exactly what I would expect in a Chinese buffet, decent but nothing overly spectacular. The was a large variety of dishes to choose from which makes it easy to please everyone at the table. While not packed, there were quite a few full tables which kept the food rotating and fresh. The Mongolian grill was great and the kids really enjoyed the sushi. The best part of the meal was how attentive the staff was! Constant clearing of empty dishes and offers of refills on drinks. Even the kids commenTed between their many trips to the buffet about how nice the staff was! Overall, a great casual spot for a family meal after a long day at the water park. We ate here on our first night in Williamsburg since we read all these great reviews. Here's a pro tip: if you are in between meal hours, order takeout! We got there around 4:30PM for dinner. We decided on the buffet since it looked to be full. However it was very obvious that it had been sitting. We were starving so we ate anyway. The Egg Drop soup was great and perfect temperature for eating. Some other foods like the chicken and broccoli and the honey chicken were a bit funky. Around 5, they started swapping out the buffet for fresh food for dinner. I went back up at that point and the food was WAAAY better, like night and day. My other complaint would be the salad and dessert bar. The salad and dressing were pretty much empty. The dessert bar had some chocolate pudding that had solidified and some tasteless Jello (I tried red, green, and white/almond). I would definitely get a takeout platter next time because we definitely didn't get our $15 worth. Peking is my go-to Chinese take-out spot. I occasionally get the buffet, but we mostly get take-out for the family. The prices are more than fair, the portions are large, and I enjoy the food. I have sampled other Chinese places for take-out in the area here and there over the years and Peking does it the best for me. Their portions and homemade sauces push it over the edge. They have good vegetarian options for when I am not feeling meat such as the Ma Bo's Tofu, Tofu Homestyle, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, and so forth. As far as chicken dishes go, I like the Peking Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, Orange Chicken, and Sesame Crystal Chicken. Their Orange Flavored Beef is also very nice. Of course, they do plenty more than that, I just drift towards those protein-heavy meals when I am feeling more gluttonous. The staff has always been very nice to us and I enjoy going in there and seeing them, and a few of them have watched me grow up over the years since my parents took me to the restaurant from birth and they have gone since it opened in I believe the 1980s. As far as the buffet goes, the variety is nice and the sushi is wonderful, especially at dinner time. They have a sweet sticky rice on the buffet that I love too. I rarely go for the Mongolian grill, but I know folks who gravitate towards it for the customization. You cannot go wrong when you portion your own dish, right? We are visiting the area from Pennsylvania and decided to try this location even after reading the mixed reviews on Yelp. Well, my kids and I enjoyed it. The ladies working were so pleasant and quick with service. While I agree with others that the food is different than a typical Chinese restaurant to which they compare it, the reality is they don't claim to be a Chinese spot. It's a Japanese and Mongolian restaurant so they put their own flare on some typically Chinese cuisine as well as have their own dishes. While the restaurant was dated, the tables and food areas were clean, which is the important part. I was also pleased to find the items covered. We would visit again. read more

Hello all, this is a place that I always come to when in Williamsburg Va. It's not fancy but a great go to for a Chinese buffet with a sushi train and Mongolian wok. The service is fine and you never leave hungry. I enjoy some of the sushi, nothing fancy, the Mongolian wok and making my choices for them to cook, the meats, mussels and chicken. My husband and I go to Peking several times a year because we enjoy the variety of dishes offered at this Chinese buffet restaurant. our last visit gave us Molly, our server who was so welcoming and took really good care of us. we were seated at one of the many lacquered tables for two, this is a fairly large place, our drinks were brought promptly and dishes cleared as needed. plus she had a smile n her face and chatted briefly about what was available. There is delicious Mongolian bbq, don't miss that, and the sushi is also. very good. Tucked in between the bbq and the sushi are at least thirty differed hot trays holding different Chinese dishes and they are changed all the time as needed. There is also a soup station and huge containers of rice. Desserts are offered but Chinese restaurants are not known for great desserts and Peking is no exception. The price is right and because we are of a. certain age we get a bit of a discount. A win-win situation all around. read more

I ordered this to go and when I got back to my office I was upset that they put green peppers in when I specifically asked to not have any and then I double checked my receipt and saw that they charged me extra for them. I'm the picture you can see an entire mound of celery that I picked out. What little chicken and rice was left was dry and flavorless. Let me be clear. This restaurant does not deserve five stars. Yet, I find myself emotionally unprepared to deliver fewer. I'm kinda annoying about going here literally every time I'm in Williamsburg. The journey for me began well over 20 years ago when I encountered the restaurant for the first time as a high school student visiting Williamsburg to check out W&M. Or perhaps it was as a Freshman as my parents came to town and took me out for some fine dining. Who knows. The point is - this is anything but fine dining. You might be alarmed as you pull into the dilapidated shopping center. As you drive past a few boarded up stores, you'll have an uneasy feeling that perhaps getting out of your car around here might be a bad idea. As you emerge from the car you'll notice the stray weeds endemic to abandoned municipalities coming up through the cracks in the cement. Again you wonder: "why did I come to this place?" But confident that my review will not steer you wrong, you trundle towards the large gold lions flanking the front door of this establishment. Walk in and you'll find COLOR! Red and gold are flung about on the tables and walls so you know you're getting Asian food of some sort. On one end of the restaurant as you walk in you'll see the large Mongolian grill - a flat surface on which they'll cook your food. To the left is the Chinese buffet. Beyond that, Vietnamese soup flanking a few Thai options... and then there's the dumpling station, dessert, and ice cream machine. Oh but wait... is that a sushi conveyor? Why yes it is! It's like a food tour of Asia in one restaurant. Wander to your table, grab a seat and a server will be over to take drink orders. Hot tea goes nicely on a cold day, your drink of choice otherwise. Are your arms sticking unpleasantly to the table? Is there nothing you can do with your napkin to get rid of that weird feel? There is a solution! Don't touch the table. Instead, get up and head over to grab some food. The important question: is any of it good, though? Yes! Some of it sure is. Here are a few tips and tricks to help ensure you emerge with joy in your heart and a nap in your near future. When to go: Watch out for weekdays. They're low traffic and your food quality may suffer for it. Mongolian BBQ Hit up the Mongolian table - it's delicious. Your food should be heaping above your bowl if you're doing it right - it cooks down a lot. When you get to the sauces, get as much solid garlic into your spoon as you can and then dump it on your bowl. If you're embarrassed, you're doing it right. Add another ladle full of garlic water. One or two ladles of ginger water. TWO ladles minimum of Mongolian sauce. After that it's up to you, but I'd highly recommend some lemon, a ladle of rice wine, and a full ladle of sesame oil. Personally I enjoy some chili oil ... they don't have that with the sauces but you can ask your server and they'll bring some to your table. As you get back your cooked food, find a set of rice makers behind you ... if you didn't go with a noodle base, you probably want some rice to soak up the delicious sauce. Chinese buffet I mean, it's a Chinese buffet. You know what to do. Take what you enjoy, leave what you don't. I was especially pleased with the bivalves when I went the other day. While you're waling down the trays look behind you: you might want to snag a bowl of hot & sour soup or egg drop soup as an appetizer. And don't forget the crunchy wonton strips too. Thai and Vietnamese options They're there somewhere. I feel like I've tried them a few times. The dumplings are pretty good - but be prepared for perhaps a thicker wrap than you're used to. If you use a spare bowl for your dumpling sauce it pairs well with some of that chili oil you asked your server for. Are the dumplings Thai or Vietnamese? Honestly I have no idea, but who can remember what's in these sections? Ice cream I feel like this has gotten better. It used to be that sort of ice-milk stuff, but more recently was delightfully creamy. I was pleasantly surprised. At the risk of misleading you though please expect ice-milk and then if it's good you too can be pleasantly surprised. Sushi conveyor If it takes you a while to get here and you're too full: good work! You've done the right thing. Choice is limited, fish is sparse, and it's mostly rice. Besides, how long has it been sitting on that conveyor anyway? Strongly recommend you stay clear of this unless you're a big fan of rice with some flavorings. read more
