Peter Chang (Williamsburg) GOOD: mixed meat Mei fun was excellent. Service was good and friendly. Prices are reasonable (but*) BAD: The pork fried dumplings needed a longer fry. They only appeared to touch the frying pan for barely a minute. They had a steamed, flimsy texture, and I was going for that nice crust, which separates a pan-fried dumpling from a steamed dumpling. My server was very good but the kitchen was very slow tonight, it took almost another twenty-five minutes to get the entree out after the appetizer, and the restaurant was only moderately busy at best. The table next to me also had to wait for every course. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. Even the dumplings that were under fried had good flavor. *Please be aware, which came as a shock to me, that the restaurants on that particular street are subject to a 12%to 13% percent sales tax, which was really off putting. I would still go back to Peter Chang's but probably another location because of the tax and the slow kitchen. read more

Peter Changs is a surprise waiting for you in Williamsburg. The staff are exceptionally attentive and will gladly help you make the best dining choices. This isn't your run of the mill prepackaged Chinese restaurant, they make authentic Chinese and dishes that break your perception of what American Chinese restaurants can be. While staying in Williamsburg recently I came here to try this location, since I've tried all the others where I've stayed in the past. The menu here is probably one of the more complete menus I've seen at a Peter Chang location, with all the typical items at his restaurants, as well as many more items. The place is pretty large inside and when I got there on a Sunday soon after they opened for the day, I was the first customer and the only one for a few mins, then the customers came and soon the parking lot was full. Service was friendly and fast. The food tasted pretty good. It wasn't exactly what I wished for, but it was still a LOT better than any American style Chinese restaurant. The heat level was decent as well, though I didn't sweat as much as I typically do when eating at Peter Changs. Overall, definitely decent... We wanted to try Peter Chang because we heard that the Fried Rice but we didn't just stop at ordering the fried rice we ordered crispy pork belly Dan Dan noodles and the beef with garlic sauce. A long standing Williamsburg institution that's close to the Premium Outlets, Peter Chang's is probably my family's favorite Chinese restaurant in the "757." I'm always amazed at the diversity coming here, there's a super healthy mix of Chinese and non-Chinese ethnicities, which tells me that it serves authentic, but approachable Chinese food. Service was OK, though I wish they checked up on us a bit more sometimes for extra napkins and water. Menu is super diverse, but it does seem to be focused on the spicier provinces of China - they are legit spicy. read more

Came here based off the reviews looking for some good Chinese food in the area. Ambiance is casual and laid back. Waiter was very friendly. Their takeout menus are used for ordering when dining in. I came in for a late dinner and reviewing the menu I saw something off the lunch menu that I wanted. They are ok with you ordering off the lunch menu for dinner. Cleanliness: Glasses were dirty and the table sticky, which immediately set a negative tone. Food Quality: Ordered a dish described as sautéed, but it arrived deep-fried and dry. When I complained, the replacement was drenched in soy sauce and inedible. Overpriced drinks almost double the price. Service: Staff were confrontational and adamant. To make matters worse, we were charged for a dish we didn't even eat. Overall: Extremely disappointing experience. I would not recommend visiting. Very good chicken fried rice. The flavor was spot on, the rice was fresh with just the right amount of diced onions. That was my favorite dish. The pork belly was good. Mapo Tofu was pretty spicy. Delicious! The restaurant was immaculate too. Bathrooms were spotless. read more

We filled up the circular dining table. Unfortunately, the one star off was because they didn't anticipate for the guests and the need for more waiters/waitresses. We have had takeout from this restaurant probably 10 times over the last 2-3 years. We have never eaten-in here--After tonight, it will be hard to return. The meal was blah at best and it was overpriced. I ordered two menu items (Generals chicken & Orange chicken w/ fried rice) and we found meal portions of good size (good enough for two additional meals), but the quality of the food leaves much to be desired. We ate here for lunch yesterday, had a bit of a time crunch as heading to a movie, but service was quick and easy. I had the Eggplant and Basil in a clay pot, and my wife had Chicken with Mushrooms Mix. Both were beyond delicious and served fresh and hot. Portions very good for the price, and very hard to find these days with inflation and food costs. Plenty of scrumptious leftovers to eat later. I have visited this Peter Chang many times and found it enjoyable but last night I was appalled by the service we received. We had an out-of-town guest with us and tried to find a quick, late dinner. We were excited that Peter Chang stays open until 9:30. We arrived at 8:55 and were refused seating because they were "closing in 3 minutes." If your doors are open then your business is open. If you are closing your business early post a sign. It is never acceptable to turn away guests because you are going to close. I will not return. read more

Good Chinese food option in Williamsburg. Had the green bean app and the Kung Pao Chicken for entree. The green beans were crunchy. For me the spice was challenging. I think it was the strong numbing sensation from the peppercorn. I know this is "normal" but it wasn't my favorite. The Kung Pao was tasty. Lots of flavors. It was a solid 3star. The decor was nice. I finally made it to the famous Peter Chang empire, and boy the fame is justified. You can just stop with the appetizers -- the soup buns and dumplings are excellent, the scallion pancake is very good, and the famous dry-fried eggplant is one of the best treatments of eggplant I have ever had. We polished off two bowls and probably should just have kept ordering more. The decor is ordinary, the restaurant was vacant on a Thursday night, and they've somehow lost their liquor license, but NONE OF THIS MATTERS. Just order more eggplant. read more

I ordered take out to try this restaurant one more time for the family. Hunan chicken had no sauce and had jalapeños in it. I've ordered this dish consistently over my lifetime in different places and never seen jalapeños in it. I did not mind the spice but it did nothing for the dry, sauceless meal. We stumbled on this place during our recent family vacation when I was craving some authentic Chinese food. We were pleasantly surprised by how flavorful and truly authentic the dishes were - who knew there would be a place like this in the middle of Virginia! We got 2 cold appetizers including my favorite with beef tendon, the Wuhan sesame noodles, cumin lamb, mapo tofu with beef, and the spare ribs - definitely wanted to try more but we were stuffed as it was. The kids absolutely loved their version of wonton soup. Everything except the wonton soup and spare ribs were perfectly seasoned with sichuan spices and extra spicy with the numbing peppers. They were cooked perfectly, vegetables fresh and crunchy, and sauces very good, not overpowering. Restaurant was very clean, bright and sunny, unlike what previous reviewers had indicated. This has become a go to place in Williamsburg, with easy access off Richmond Rd. The decor is dated and basic, but that is not why we are returning. For late lunch (stop serving it at 3pm) we had the #15 on the back of the menu-Chicken with Wood Ear Mushrooms & Snow Peas, this was done in a white sauce. I asked for extra sauce so I could moisten the fried rice with it. Well, the sauce was scant, barely enough to cover the meat/vege's, the server said this was extra sauce when I asked her about it. Ok. The meals came with a tasty vege spring roll and we choose Wonton soup. The broth was light and flavorful and the wontons were good, just the right amount of seasoning, all topped with green onions. Serving portions are generous, of course we took them home to enjoy later on our visit. The service was perfect. Spicy and pickly and very refreshing, stir fried eggplant and green beans and my husband ordered shrimp and vegetable stir fry with white rice.
