Terrible! worst spot I could've picked. Please do waste your money and do not eat here! My order was expensive for one for two the food was 100% old and was reheated egg rolls were stale fried rice stale and no taste, the orange chicken tasted literally like fermented orange peels and was also old I could not eat it it was disgusting in taste and texture. So, I I rdered house egg foo young for my husband and they gave us no gravy. Ordered seafood pan fried noodles and I couldn't believe how this dish was prepared. They used lo mein noodles instead of thin egg noodles. That was a disgrace to the dish itself because they used the wrong noodles. I'm sorry but do not waste your money eating here. What can one really say about this type of Chinese restaurant? The best thing about this place is the speed and accuracy of the products ordered. We have eaten from here pretty regularly and never have been unhappy afterwards, maybe a little stuffed though Staff is always friendly and I appreciate being to see where they prepare the food. Food is hot and made to order for entrees. Soups are pretty good as well. We prefer the combo plates or the lunch specials. Pretty straightforward shop that treats you right. China Wok has is my go-to place for Chinese Food in the area. This family run business is my go-to for Chinese food in the area. The China Wok family is always friendly and makes an effort to greet customers as they enter. The sisters who run the front counter and answer the phone are very friendly and polite. Their food is always served fresh, hot, and consistently prepared. I recommend their General Tso Tofu (comes as a large sized portion and is delicious) and steamed shrimp with vegetables (comes with enormous fresh shrimp with perfectly steamed vegetables). China Wok has a steady flow of customers and can be quite busy in the evenings, so be prepared to wait a little bit (better to call in advance). Another nice feature about China Wok is that you can see directly into the kitchen area and watch them prepare your food. I did notice how clean and neat the kitchen was and how efficiently the cooks were in preparing the food. Just a final note that they are closed on Mondays. read more

I'm giving the two stars for the lovely people who were very polite and attentive. But as for the food, it was really terrible. I'm not sure what province of China they're from or where they were taught to cook, but hot and sour soup is generally not thick, filled with floating mushrooms and about a quarter inch of chili oil, the hot comes from black pepper and the sour from vinegar neither of which were present. What's more, there's no sweetness add to that the different things that were in it were kind of odd ingredients for hot and sour soup! There were no lily flowers or black tree fungus but lots of shredded carrots which I've never seen. I give them credit for having a little egg and a little bit of tofu but definitely definitely not remotely close in look or taste to any recipe for hot and sour soup I've ever seen. The spring rolls had thick wrappers and mushy insides. The main dish I got tasted the same odd, sweet flavor as the hot and sour soup, so I think they just use the same flavorings I regardless of what the recipe is. I had ordered chicken and garlic sauce, but this was definitely not garlic sauce. They seem to be very nice people, but I would not go there if you wanted anything remotely like regular Chinese food. On the flipside, if you grew up somewhere where they had what I refer to as Chop Suey palaces and not authentic Chinese cuisine, you might like it. I've just discovered China Wok in the last month, and I feel like I've become a semi-regular already. Their lunch specials lured me in, and their lunch specials have kept me as a customer. I've had their General Tso's chicken, their sesame chicken, and their kung pao chicken; I've tried their white rice and their pork fried rice, both of which were delicious; and I've had their eggrolls. Regarding the entrees, the General Tso's chicken was excellent. It was not covered in a gel-like substance like you get in some places. There is a true sauce on the chicken that really pops. When the extra sauce is mixed with the rice it was quite delicious and made cleaning my plate extra fun. Similarly, the sesame chicken had a wonderful sauce with a very toasty flavor accented by the toasted sesame seeds. It might be my favorite dish I've had at China Wok. The kung pao chicken was just the right amount of spicy, and the vegetables were still very crisp and tasty. The sides are similarly tasty. The rice was cooked perfectly, and complements the entrees so well without overshadowing them. The eggrolls were just how I like them. They were very crispy on the outside, but not overdone. The insides were piping hot and crisp as well. So good. The best part of all of this is the value. A large dinner plate-sized helping of one of about 30 different dishes, rice, and two pieces of crab rangoon is $4.85 all week long before 3 PM. I sub out the rangoon for an eggroll. Frankly, it's one of the best deals going in Williamsburg. The interior of the restaurant is very simple (in a good way) and clean, and the tables are usually mostly full during meal times. It made me think of a 1980s pizza place with Asian decor. The booths are molded plywood like some of my favorite pizza and hot dog joints from childhood had. The service is very friendly, and they have always gotten my order right. I'm very pleased with somewhere I can purchase two delicious meals for less than $10 and be confident in the cleanliness and know that the service will be pleasant. I'm going back again today. We have had bad luck with the majority of "quick" Chinese takeout here and finally tried this one based of their google reviews. It seems the majority of their bad reviews were more based towards their customer service than the food itself. All I can say is the young lady I placed my order with was pleasant on the phone, the food was ready when they told me it would be, you could see back into the kitchen and it was very clean (Saturday night too), and they had it set-up very nicely for Covid if your worried about that. We got beef w/ snow peas, the chicken and shrimp special, shrimp Lo mein, and szechuan chicken. I regret not taking any pictures but our food was excellent. If all I have to deal with is the occasional cranky person answering the phone to eat food this good then so be it. read more

But I have had some pretty bland Chinese food over the last 30 years and this was about as generic as it came. I even added some soy sauce to the lo mein and some duck sauce to my Eggroll and it did not help any. I should have gotten a pizza. My rating system is : 1 star - if someone else buys it I won't eat it 2 star - if I'm hungry, no other options and someone buys it - I would consider eating it 3 star - I'm ok with eating it as long as someone else pays 4 star - I will eat again and pay for it and be a semi-regular customer 5 star - I will travel for good food and pay good money and be back on a regular basis and maybe even pay for yours just so we can go read more

By far the best Chinese takeout experience I've had in Williamsburg. I ordered takeout on a whim after running errands yesterday. I had noticed this place before but it's sort of on the other side of town from where I live, so hadn't had a good opportunity to try it. Without even looking at the menu, I called and ordered the Szechuan Chicken. I was a bit surprised at the price of $8.95, but realized later than the portion of this dish was fairly large. I later took note that on the menu there are certain items, such as Chicken n Broccoli and lo mein, that are available in a small portion with standard cheap prices of about $5. I'll need to try one of these later to see if the quality matches what I ordered. Anyways, my Szechuan Chicken was awesome! Very flavorful, and spicier than what I've had in the past. It was full of veggies, including broccoli, green onions, water chestnuts, and sugar snap peas. Considering I can get two meals out of it, I would certainly get this again. As other reviewers have noted, service isn't friendly. The lady on the phone was difficult to communicate with. When I came in to pick up my food there was a shy young girl (maybe 10-12 years old) who rang me up and I wasn't acknowledged by any of the adults. read more

They went above and beyond on our order. I ordered the Seafood pan fried noodles and they were delicious - lots of large shrimp and delicious scallops as well. The noodles and white sauce was perfect - not too much and perfect texture. Thank you! They also fill the rice to the max and everyone had leftovers. Of all the "cheap" Chinese places in Williamsburg this one has the least palatable food. The service was fine; fast and courteous. But the food was so bad we ended up throwing most of it away. **FOOD** The general Tso was stringy, broccoli mushy, hot and sour soup was sugary - and not hot or sour. Won ton soup broth was sugary as well, but the wonton was ok. We wouldn't go back here again and it's a shame because of its proximity to home. If you're looking for cheap Chinese joints (not the ilk of Ichiban or Peter Chang) I'd recommend Tops China which is only a one minute drive away from China Wok. Food tastes MUCH better. China Wok, you are a lifesaver! Okay, this is definitely not a fancy place that you would go for a special occasion... but most Chinese restaurants aren't anyway, so you should already assume that. We were staying at the Powhatan Resort and saw a flyer for China Wok. The free delivery caught our attention (yes, we're cheap). The menu is HUGE, there's so much to choose from. The portion is VERY generous. The regular portion can easily feed two hungry adults. We ordered 3 regular dishes and 1 small dish, and it was enough for the 4 of us for lunch and dinner... there would've been leftover for breakfast, but Chinese food for breakfast just doesn't sound right. The dishes were super tasty. Sure, some are greasy and kind of on the salty side, but not more than the Chinese food you'd find anywhere else. Also, the people were awesome. Most of my order was not cooked correctly or tasted right. Szechuan beef is supposed to have shredded carrots and celery. Mine looked more like hunan beef with added red pepper. It had broccoli, mushrooms, and large peices of carrots and green peppers. Half of my container of sesame chicken was broccoli. Shouldn't have broccoli at all. They must have had it for a filler. When I ordered, I asked them if they made their meat dumplings from scratch. They said yes. What they called dumplings was just stuffed wontons. The egg drop soup was tasteless. The hot and sour soup was not good. It lacked all of the standard mushooms that you typically find in hot and sour soup, and did not have the correct flavor. I ended up throwing away about half of the food that I had ordered. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone that likes Chinese food. read more

Once again I found myself jonesing for a Chinese food fix so I called China Wok which has a couple of things going for it. First off, it's very close to my home. And while these take away/eat in places are ubiquitous in our area, no other is closer. Second, the food I have ordered here in the past has always been fresh, well-cooked and very tasty. I couldn't ask for more from a "fast food" joint. I'm a man of simple tastes and habits born of long standing, so what I order usually runs to a few of the many menu selections - typically General Tso's Chicken, House Lo Mein, House Fried Rice, and Egg Rolls. The menu here is extensive, but I can only imagine the other items would be as tasty as what I order. I noted comments by others regarding the friendliness of the owners and "staff". Most of the folks working here are all from one family and typical of restaurant families, everybody gets to work in some capacity at some point. The Chinese are not known for being particularly "warm and fuzzy" with strangers, and in a business setting it's just that... business! One thing for sure at China Wok is they are always busy taking orders, cooking, packing, taking payment, etc., etc. so they don't have a lot of time to schmooze the customers.I have always found the folks here to be very friendly and I make a point of speaking to them in a friendly way regardless of how they act.My kindness is always reciprocated. This year I even gave them the gift of one of my hand-made and hand-painted Feng Shui snakes as a Chinese New Year gift. Follow the advise of other reviewers regarding portion sizes. Lunches at $4.85 until 3 PM are the best value and are served with your choice of fried or white rice and 2 pcs. of shrimp Rangoon. Dinners run from $5.95 (veg Egg Foo Young) -$11.45 (mostly the seafood dishes with giant prawn, etc.) depending on your order, but the portion is enough for two people to share and be full. It's lunch time and I have some left-overs from my dinner I'm thinking of revisiting, so I'll wrap things up simply by saying - Hungry for good, fast Chinese? Alright. Lots of random reviews going in here. I feel the pain of people who feel like they got dissed by this place. As a local, I go here at least once a week. Why, cuz it ain't awesome but it is one of the best takeout places. My biggest critique is that it is not always consistent in terms of quality. But more often than not it is pretty good. I just went there today and got the best steamed dumplings ever. So. Not sure what's up with the place. It is doing good food, for me, consistently (sometimes) over the few years I've been going here. What better way to start off the new Year than take out from China Wok. Literally didn't feel like moving on New Years Day so my hubby, cousin and I ordered delivery takeout. Standard Chinese take-out, we ordered vegetable fried rice, chicken and broccoli with gravy, Szechuan chicken and General Tsos chicken. I honestly have not had Chinese take out in awhile and it hit the spot. We're talking years of not having Chinese takeout. Anyways the fried rice was delicious and the General Tso's was spot on. The scechuan chicken was lacking a bit in flavor but the chicken and broccoli was great. Thank you China Wok for making our New Years experience a wonderful one. We got the General Tso Chicken and the chicken was very dry. We asked for a refund, but they just said we started eating it and refused to give the refund. What a miserable experience. I was visiting from out of town. One of my (elderly) mother's rare treats is to go out for Chinese food. I wanted to take her out, thinking it would be a fun time for her. Boy was I wrong. She suggested this place, having been there once before. We walked in, but the place was completely empty. At lunchtime. Should've paid attention to that. The Chinese woman at the counter did not greet us as we came in (or when we left). She was the most SULLEN person I've encountered in a long time. Extremely unfriendly. Didn't smile once. As I placed my order, I was taken aback when she barked at me, "Egg roll!" I smiled and said, "No, thank you, just the rice, please." She barked back, even louder, "EGG ROLL!!!" I looked back at the paper menu and realized what the problem was. Well, excuse me, but it being my first time, I didn't know you had to choose between the egg roll or crab rangoons, sheesh! I kept my cool and continued to be friendly, but it was really confusing because she was being so unfriendly and also because it should've been easier than this. It made me feel really uncomfortable. I kept trying to be nice, but she seemed so miserable and somehow that was OUR fault. So I ordered the roast pork chow mein lunch special. Guess what? I ordered Chicken Lo Mein, General Tsao chicken, an order of crab Rangoon, and an order of spring rolls for delivery around lunch time. The Lo Mein was flavorless, the General Tsao chicken was so over cooked, it was like chewing on shoe leather. The sauce was tasty, but the chicken was so hard to chew I lost interest. The spring rolls tasted weird... Not bad, just not like the usual cabbage spring roll. Lastly, the crab Rangoon, my favorite Chinese food appetizer, had a filling made with pickles. PICKLES. WHO PUTS PICKLES/RELISH IN CRAB RANGOON?! It ruined it for me! Even the white rice that comes with an entree was dry. I do not recommend this place, even to satisfy a Chinese craving. We just got takeout here, thanks to the other reviewer, and from word of mouth from someone in our supper club. We couldn't have been happier! We've been long time Ichiban customers, but this place will be getting our business now, unless we want to sit down. I think what really sealed it for me was the broccoli in both of our dishes, which is very difficult (just ask Cooks Illustrated: http://www.cooksillustrated.com/recipes/article.asp?docid=23337), but it was perfect. Still slightly firm and that wonderful dark green when you steam it just right, but not mushy and gross. The rest of the meal (chicken and broccoli, bean curd szechuan style, moo shoo veggie, and some very good egg rolls) were all good, and it was $28 with free delivery.
