Every trip to Myrtle Beach includes a stop at Captain George's, so we were pleasantly surprised to discover there's one in Williamsburg too. It didn't disappoint. The atmosphere here is quite different from the Myrtle Beach location. Instead of a beachy vibe, it has more of a colonial feel that fits Williamsburg perfectly. We were seated at a cozy table for two near the fireplace, which made for a warm, relaxing atmosphere. As for the food--exactly what we'd hoped for. The crab legs kept coming, the peel-and-eat shrimp were plentiful, and everything we tried was fresh and delicious. If you're going for seafood, you'll leave happy. We arrived right when they opened, which turned out to be a great decision. The restaurant was calm and uncrowded when we sat down, but by the time we finished eating, there was a line and the place was absolutely packed. If you're in Williamsburg and craving seafood, I highly recommend Captain George's. Just do yourself a favor and go early--you'll beat the crowds and enjoy the experience even more. read more

Came to Williamsburg for a quick little getaway. Wanted something good but different than home. This place had a seafood buffet with great variety. More traditional than your average Asian buffet and for the most part well seasoned. The marinated shrimp on the salad bar were delicious minus the fact that they weren't deveined. They have a great soup called She-crab. My daughter said the chicken wings were good as well. The amount per person was about the price of an average seafood boil so I'd say it was a great value. You can also order off the menu. I had my granddaughter so got her something off of the children's menu but it does include the dessert bar as well. Service was very good. I've been to the Outer Banks location but when I notice there was another location in Williamsburg, I said why not. We had a large party celebrating a birthday. You have a choice of AYCE buffet from four long tables with a variety of selections for $51.99 or you can also choose an entree with two sides for $36.99. The table had a split decision, some chose the buffet and some chose the entree which is perfectly fine. I chose the fried jumbo shrimp with green beans and baked potato. Those fried jumbo shrimp were tender, crispy and delicious. The two sides chosen were perfectly prepared. The service provided by our server Ceci was immaculate. She very friendly, humorous, attentive and knowledgeable. Even another server named Doug who occasionally check on us too. All staff had great teamwork, friendly and communication very well. The dining area is clean, has a full bar, plenty of seatings, and a water feature outside for photo ops. The decor is much better and very spacious too than the Outer Banks one. This is my go to seafood restaurant for AYCE snow crab legs. They almost always come out huge, and harm so the quality is really good. Too bad the nearest one is in Williamsburg, so it's like a 2.5 hrs drive for me. We only come here when we go to Busch Gardens or Great Wolf Lodge. Or, if we are passing Williamsburg going back to DC. Yesterday, I had an appetizer and entree of like 4 plates of crab legs! The only real variety with my dinner was with the dessert. Finally got to try Captain George's during a recent Williamsburg trip after years of curiosity. Highlights of the buffet for me were the softshell crabs, fried oysters, oysters Rockefeller, baked crab imperial, mashed potatoes, and collard greens. I liked the crab legs and crawfish but had a bit of a hard time getting the meat out of them due to my own inexperience which is obviously no fault of the restaurant. Dessert was good. The steamed shrimp was a little difficult to peel, and I wasn't super impressed with the broiled salmon. Service was excellent, and I really liked the atmosphere. Definitely recommend coming right at opening. I was there on a Monday night a few minutes after 4pm and it wasn't at all crowded, although it definitely started filling up by the time I left there still wasn't a line yet. read more

My wife and I went to Captain George while on vacation in Williamsburg. We love everything from the cleanliness, quality of food and the service. Actually I can't think of any dislikes from our experience. First our server was excellent and kept refilling our drinks and removing our used plates from the table. This is an all you can eat buffet but I like many other customers mainly ate the perfectly cooked snow crab legs. I ate two plates full of crab legs,steamed shrimp and fried oysters. No way as good as there were back in the day, all of the seafood was sub-par and appeared to be frozen imports. The soft-shell crabs were the size of silver dollars, the crab legs were so small they bent instead of cracking. Definitely not worth the $50/person price. My husband and I celebrated our Anniversary Labor Day weekend and I had gotten us a gift certificate for us to go out to eat. We've always loved eating there but this time was a let down for us. The crab legs (which we mainly go for) were overcooked and you could hardly peel them and get any meat out. The same with the shrimp. They were too hard to peel. My husband spoke to the manager which told him there had been other complaints from multiple tables as well. He told us he would see what he could do on our check and ended up doing nothing. The buffet has a ton of options -- from the salad bar to chicken, steak, plenty of sides, and of course lots of seafood. They also have a separate line just for crab legs, which is nice, but it tends to get backed up since staff serve them directly, making the wait longer. The food overall is good, though the crab legs can be a hit or miss depending on the night. My least favorite part is the dessert selection -- nothing really stands out as tasty. Suggestion: Since crab legs are the main draw, it might be helpful if staff circulated through the dining area offering them, rather than everyone waiting in a single line. Had an amazing experience with my family. Went on a Saturday around 7pm during vacation. There were 2 lines - one was for parties of 4 or less, the other for larger parties. We waited less than 5 minutes. The hostess that walked us to our table was so friendly and asked us about where we were visiting from and if it was our first time there. Our waiter was also very friendly. He made sure he checked on us multiple times and was on point with refills and emptying our bowl for scraps. The food was absolutely delicious! If you like all you can eat snow crab legs, This Is The Place!! You can eat them to your hearts content, and if you have any room left, there's tons of other things on the buffet as well. It's very clear the crab legs are the star of the show here, tho. They were delicious! All the staff we encountered were wonderful, and our server, Andrew, was excellent. He kept our plates cleared and our drinks filled along with answering any questions we had. He really was delightful! The atmosphere is very nice, as is the decor. It's quite a large restaurant inside and there's plenty of parking. I hear it's understandably very busy in peak season. This place is a huge with a really long buffet (70+ items) but you can also order a few items off the menu if you don't want the buffet. It is great for large groups. Tried out this restaurant in the off season. Mainly went for the seafood, which we ate a lot of! We enjoyed everything that was on the steam bar, some of the sides were a little lack luster and did not have much flavor (specifically the mac & cheese, rice pilaf and two of the cold salads). Our waiter was really terrific, very attentive and it was slow enough they checked on us a number of times. Did try two mixed drinks from the bar, tasted like the drinks used a lot of pre-mixed drink mixes. But they were also only $10 which seems like a steal these days. The Service is always amazing, best way to describe the experience is if you combine Cruise Ship waitstaff with an all you can eat buffet. The food is delicious and always hot and fresh. The main reason I go here is for the crab legs, and the are a 9/10 (only reason it's not 10/10, is the legs are thinner then other restaurants), plus there is a whole bar for non-seafood eaters. I had an amazing time visiting my 3 children and 3 of my four grandkids in Va. For a family farewell dinner we had the opportunity to visit Captain George . Although my children expressed how good it was, it was more than I expected. The food was very good hot an seasoned well. Our waiter was available to provide us with great service. It is pricey for a party of 6 but well worth it. We had to wait short periods for them to bring out more crab, but we didn't mind because they ensured that the crab was hot, tasty and and alot of it. Wow! Every time I come to a Captain George's I am never disappointed. We went to the one in Virginia beach last year and my fiancé loved it so much we wanted to come back for his birthday this past weekend. An to our surprise there was one a little closer in Williamsburg. Once we arrived on Sunday there was a life all the way down the sidewalk. If you see this DONT PANIC its just because the doors are not open yet but trust me there is enough room and food to go around. Plus they move the line quickly with large parties being in a different line. I totally forgot out waiters name (light skinned young black guy with either dreads or braids)! But man he needs a raise! He was smiling and friendly always coming to check on us just a pleasure to have a round. They have a large selection of baked and fried seafoods and for those who don't like or are allergic to it they have items like fried chicken, turkey, sausage, ham, salad, etc. They also have some great sides like corn, mashed potatoes, broccoli, etc. Some of the food they offer is a little different between locations like the one in VA Beach has steak, pizza, etc. However, it is a free for all when it comes to the crabs and there was an adult take away crabs from her last year. So, the fact that the Williamsburg locations has an attendee there passing out the crab legs and only letting you get so much at a time cuts down on any arguments or attitudes and ensures there is a constant flow. I highly recommend the baked clams, fried oysters, and crab legs! Did i mention they have a dessert bar also? They have everything from bread and banana pudding to fruits, jello, apple cobbler, cheesecake, carrot cake, chocolate, and white cake but my personal favorites are the flan and baklava! read more

So here's the scoop. If you love crab legs, oysters, shrimp, it's an incredible value. The seafood that I tried was really good. The shrimp were not overcooked. My husband, the crab leg guy, was really happy with his food. If you don't like seafood, the food is ok. We have not tried Capt George's in quite a while and so I thought Fathers Day would provide a good opportunity for an update. We were pleasantly surprised at the short wait for a table, even thought the were pretty full. The waiter greeted us quickly but it was at least 10 min before we got our drinks. When we started sampling their extensive buffet, I noted that some of my favorite Capt George's dishes were not as flavorful as I recalled them to be. For example, I love their Seafood Pasta Salid but it was just so-so today - lacking in... something. A couple of dishes were piping hot but most were only warm - not bad, but when you have lots of goodies your are sampling, only-warm items on the buffet get cold quickly on your plate. There were a few pleasant surprises like the maranaded sirloin which was flavorable and tender, but again, only warm. Every thing was pretty good flavorwise... except for the crab legs which were absolutely anemic. They were pretty small and for some reason the minimal amount of meat inside was almost impossible to get out. Capt George's normally has superb crab legs - the best anywhere. But definitely not today. What a disappointment. The desert bar had their normally sumptuous selection, but today, several pans were empty and others were a bit dry, as if they had been sitting out. When I mentioned the issues to our waiter, he asked if I had tried the Rice Pudding. I told him it was one of the selections they had been out of. A short time latter he showed up with a saucer full of Rice Puding which was quite good. All in all Capt George's was passable, but they can be so much more. read more

We had a nice Mother's Day lunch at Captain George's. It has been years since I've been there! The decor was nice and tables are in sections at different levels, which improves the ambiance. Despite the holiday, we were able to be seated immediately upon arrival. The waiters were attentive and cleared plates and refilled drinks quickly. They had a larger cocktail menu than most seafood buffets and did a good job keeping the crab legs stocked!
