When I go to a restaurant I consider two things... the food and the customer service. The later includes the speed of the service as well as how the employees at the restaurant treat you.. This review is not particularly about the food (it's ok, portions are good) but about the general 'sense' I get from the owner... He is the reason, the only reason I will NOT be returning. There was a party of 8 and, except for a couple, we were all paying individually. When it came time to 'do the bill' it seemed that the owner was very annoyed that it was 'separate' checks.. My feeling ... 'great he has people eating at his restaurant. He should be happy that there are 'checks' period.' And then there was the time I accidentally i took a sip of the drink that I erroneously brought in. He saw me taking a sip and I felt like he was 'scolding me'... ( the drink was not 'booze', it was a hydration drink). I was not supposed to bring in other food into his restaurant.. I get that. I was wrong. It can be hit or miss as far as service and howi busy they are. Sometimes there will be no one in the place and you can get some of the best service in town, but the other night it took 20_ minutes toget another beer even though there were 3 servers working in the tiny place. The food is sub par, but cheap. The drinks are very cheap as well. If you want a dive with cheap drinks and food this is the place to go. So i've been back a couple of times since my initial review. And I feel that the guys deserve a bump from 3 to 4 stars. You can't beat the super long happy hour and cheap dos xx. I went back to try the breakfast tacos. Much better than my dinner experience. I was initially bummed that they were out of bacon (my favorite ingredient) but the cashier was super apologetic and I got sausage instead. Also people In my group got beef, chorizo, and bean and cheese. A man that I assume was the owner of the place offered a complimentary drink while we waited and was super nice. This sucks that I have to post review, because the food is just excellent! I went in the morning to have a little breakfast with my daughter. There weren't many people in the place, I think I was the third person there and I thought great, I'll have a nice quick breakfast with my daughter before work. I ordered the breakfast taco combo for my daughter and ordered three carne guisada tacos for myself. I was told that the carne guisada tacos weren't a part of the breakfast special and I was okay with that and told her so. So my daughter receives her taco plate and she tells me it was excellent. I didn't receive my plate and assumed that my plate was delayed because I chose something from the menu that wasn't a breakfast item. So some times passed and my daughter's halfway done with her plate and she comes to ask if everything was okay. I then realized hey, I didn't get my food. My server then mentioned that she was sorry and thought I didn't want to place the order. I said no problem, no big deal and waited for my plate. She came back a few minutes later with one carne guisada taco. At this point my daughter was mostly done with her food and I thought maybe when she comes back I'll order the tacos to go. I put the taco in my mouth, not only was it hot, but it was so hot that it burnt my lip and I wasn't given any warning as to how hot it was. So I waited for our check, it never came and we weren't checked on either. So I went up to the register and paid my ticket, frustrated and before I could ask to order tacos to go, she had already rang me up with my total. So with a sign, I paid my check and still included a tip since I know waitresses and servers do not make much an hour. But I was super frustrated about the service and had to pick up something at the convenience store to quell my appetite. It's a shame too, because the food was great, I wish the service was better. Cheko's is muy yum yum!! Their refried beans and rice remind me of my own Mother's recipes. Plus their fajitas are cooked just right. I called Sergio, the owner, for a last minute Ugly Christmas party dinner and asked if he would accommodate me for a large take out order. He normally doesn't do catering but made an exception and it was well worth it. The food was a big hit!! Beef and Chicken fajitas with all the fixins. Everybody kept asking me where I ordered them from and I kept saying Cheko's on Koenig!! Plus I've been there for lunch and dinner plus happy hour. They have cold Modelo Especial in bottles, my favorites!! Their queso is good, along with their enchiladas, nachos, burritos and oh gosh, I must order from them tonight, I'm hungry just thinking about it. My running group sometimes come here for breakfast. Why? Because it's cheap and they have a decent breakfast menu. Other places there's not much as far as breakfast as Chekos. It was my first time here. Pretty colorful layout. The service was good. They actually had a breakfast special which was 3 breakfast tacos with a side of potatoes for $3.75. Not bad. Coffee was okay. I had the egg and machado taco with a side of potatoes and coffee all under $5. Pretty filing and decent food for me. It wasn't great food but it was edible. If my running group decides to come here, I'll come back too. read more

I've only been here once and it was take out, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I ordered the cheese mole enchiladas, and they didn't taste terrible. But, what really disappointed me was that they microwaved my meal in the styrofoam container. So, when I opened it up to eat when I got home, I noticed some of my food had melted into the container....not very safe, if you ask me. I'm not sure if the food is also microwaved when you eat it there also, but that alone knocks off a star for me. Salsas weren't bad either but not the best I've had. I thought I would try this place out since I drive by it all of the time. Some one on the list suggested the breakfast tacos are very good. I didn't have the breakfast tacos since it was too late and there is a one dollar up charge for breakfast items after noon. I had the chicken fajitas and found it bland with guacamole that had an odd texture. The beans were descent but that was about it. The kicker for me is that there are no outside drinks allowed. I understand this policy to get people to buy their drinks, but I don't want to drink out of their plastic cups that I think put toxins into the water. I just had a metal water bottle and they made me leave it outside. Maybe there is a law that I don't know about but most places are accommodating. read more

Best tacos ever! The Barbacoa was THE BEST! I've been there a few times each time was great, was a little disappointed by the nacho appetizer but they were super busy so I cut them some slack. The food was awesome, inexpensive and the margaritas are just as good. read more

Some people say 'you get what you pay for' at Cheko's. I think you get a little more. Their food is not phenomenal, but good, and their prices dang low. As a vegetarian, I like Cheko's because you can veggify a lot of things on the menu- burritos, tacos, chalupas, etc.- even though their specialty plates are pretty meat-centric. They do have a couple veggie enchilada specials that are pretty tasty. Chips and salsa are a step above average, and with those 1$ Tecates, well, you can have yourself a mighty fine time! read more

My main bone to pick about this place is when I go in for breakfast on the weekend is that they have the TV blaring the news waaaaay too loud and I find it obnoxious. The food and service overcome that to keep me coming back week in and week out. Yes, the green salsa is incredible and if you have not tried the Checkos omelette you have missed one of the best things on the menu. They are nice people and I really hope that they make it. Chekos has a lot to learn about customer service and satisfaction. I went in there to eat a early lunch today, arriving at my table at 10:56 am. As I looked around, I noticed that none of the tables had chips but each had salsa. I ordered my drink shortly after sitting down and my food a few moments later. I finally asked a customer siting across why no one had chips and was told that they did not serve them until after 11:00 am, otherwise, you would have to purchase them. My food arrived at 11:04 am and I asked the waiter if he could serve me chips since it was after 11:00 am. I was totally shocked when he said that I sat down and ordered prior to 11:00 am so I would have to pay for them. The other customer also informed me that they do not give chips with their chili con queso when ordering take out. Are you freakin kidding me??? Since there are literally thousands of Mexican food establishments in the Austin and surrounding areas, I find them to pretty out of touch with the reality that people have come to expect chips and salsa with their meal. So, that was my last time to eat at Chekos, which I now refer to Cheap..ooo"s! Good luck staying in business. For the vegetarians in the house, this is the only mom & pop Mexican place in this 'hood that has vegetarian beans. They supposedly use olive oil! Huzzah! OK...so I work near Cheko's and more often than not I find my car mysteriously turning into their non-descript parking lot (shared with a Laundromat!) and filling my tummy with delicious-ness! The breakfast tacos are to die for...STUFFED with copious amounts of delicious bacon, chorizo, cheese or whatever your weapon of choice and eggs! The have a great special, 3 tacos super cheap before 11am! And the lunch specials are always delicious and a great bargain...most days you can get their combo plate for $6.00!! WONDERFUL neighborhood place! I read all the reviews and decided to give it a try today. Definitely worth going back again and again. It is kid friendly, good food and light on the pocket book. I spent Valentines night here with my son and their two waitresses. It felt very homely and satisfying. First, they asked if I needed one of them to hold him while I ate my fajita's, which came out sizzling on a hot plate deliciously seasoned and too much for one person I could not finish. Picked up a couple of to-go orders from here the other day. I ordered the mole & my husband got the two chicken taco combo. The chicken in the tacos was white and dark meat (disappointing) and the serving sizes were more than anyone should eat in one sitting. The salsa was very fresh and tasty - not too hot either. The chips were light and crispy, not heavy and oily like some other restaurants. I didn't finish the whole mole - it was bigger than my head. Cheko's leaned more towards tex-mex than the clean Mexican at El Chile, but if you like huge portion sizes - this may be a place for you. read more
