This place is so underrated. I always get the beef fajita enchiladas. They are a great deal for 10.99 when they are doing their specials. Regarding the previous yelp review about the guy crying about using the restroom, I was actually there eating when this happened. The guy just barged in, didn't buy anything, and didnt even ask to use the restroom. When the employee confronted him, his entitlement started to show and he was crying about how he'll never eat there again (even though he was not a paying customer that day) lol Him leaving a 1 star review shows what kind of person he was. Anyways go support a local small business, the enchiladas are a must!

Cheko's should be more popular! I came here with a friend on a Saturday night and it was dead but we were so confused why. This place has great food, amazing prices, good portions, and awesome service. Very simple but nice seating inside and they have great specials every day. On Saturday the enchiladas were $10.99 so I got the chicken fajita enchiladas with salsa verde and they were great! I also really loved the beans, wasn't as big of a fan of their rice but it was still good. Please give this place a chance if you want some good, simple, and cheap Mexican food!!

Carne Guisada Taco - A complete fatty mess
    Rich M.

I dislike giving bad reviews but some places truly deserve it. A quick check of other reviews made this place seem like a good choice. I often wonder how other diners experiences can be soooo different from my own. Cheko's, on this day at least, deserves this review. On a brief trip to Austin a friend suggested meeting here (it's across the street from his apt) and says that he likes the place. He's from the east coast so I now doubt his ability to judge Tex-Mex but I digress. At 5pm on a Wednesday, on a major street, I walk into a completely empty restaurant. No cooking aromas. No mariachi music. Nothing. After a long look at the large menu I chose a gordita with picadillo and my friend chooses a carne asada plate. These orders came to the table VERY quickly. At first I was astonished but then they came into view. My gordita was a rock hard, flat, thin slab of masa with the filling oozing around the sides. No lettuce, no tomato, cheese...just beans and meat. (The gordita on the menu included those items) I sent it back immediately and then ordered two carne guisada tacos. (pictured) This also came to the table VERY quickly. The tortillas were possibly 6" across and the carne was bleeding from each end. I used my fork to taste the guisada only to get a big mouthful of fatty beef nugget hidden behind the sauce. I picked at it for a while and left it. My friend's plate was an unholy looking mess of thin cut carne asada (it didn't look fresh...or even hot), guacamole slices, nopales, cheese, and rice, All slopped together. It was hideous. He didn't finish it. Cheko's should "finish". It's plain bad.

Can confirm the fajita chicken quesadilla is also very good! I could taste the butter on the outside of the tortilla, so good. Might like the chipotle enchiladas slightly better but both great! The quesadilla lunch special is $10.28 before tip and comes with rice and beans, pretty hard to beat. Service is great in here as always!

Some of the worst salsa I have ever consumed.

Oh, Chekos. Where do I start? I have been a loyal neighbourhood patron for over 15 years. I , admittedly, haven't been here in a while as I wasn't impressed the last time I visited. I decided to give you another try and was even more dissapointed. The salsa takes like a very cheap can of stewed tomatoes. It seems like you are trying to cater to strictly a gringo crowd, but this gringo was not impressed. My British grandmother made better than this! The charro beans tasted sour and had rancid hot dogs floating in it. The instant refried beans I recieved as a replacement did nothing to make it better. You do not warrent charging the ridiculous prices like they charge at an upscale, much tastier establishment. (16.00 for cheese enchiladas with tinned salsa an sour beans)This used to be my reasonable, local neighbourhood place to get a great meal but you now ,you sadly miss the mark. I will say, you make a mean Margarita, but Im not here to hang and drink, I wanted some tasty Mexican fare like the good ole days, and it just didn't happen.

    Taquitos
    Dorene R.

The taquitos were delectable, definitely worth a try. The service was quick, Cheko was a great host. The ambiance needs some update but if you are good with old traditional Mexican this is for you. Some of the food was colder than I'd prefer but the taste was spot on

This is the sort of no frills place you like supporting. Family runs the place and works in the kitchen. Food is authentic and down to earth, no fancy names or sauces or up charges. It's what you see is what you get--which is great Mexican food. Don't expect a fancy atmosphere but do expect good drinks food and service. Nice to support a place like this over the chains.

Our first time here. This food is great, and waiter is wonderful. If you like El Caribe, you will love this place. Great food minus the attitude. I had the molé enchiladas, and they rival Veracruz in Dallas. My husband had the menudo and he ate the entire bowlful. Why aren't you here???

Make a reservation if you have a large party or are on a tighter schedule. It's a bit loud for those seated in the lobby/entrance area, but totes a vibe. For food, we ordered the blackened catfish, brisket burnt ends quesadillas, and harvest bowl to share. Everything was delicious and served quickly, even with the aforementioned dinner rush. 10/10 would order the same items again. I was so appreciative of the server splitting the entree over two plates without us asking. Did I mention the complimentary popcorn and cornbread? Twas a FEAST. I should've reacted to my first impulse when I walked in. Leave! Now! The booming, loud and annoying music was almost unbearable. I stayed and ordered the #3 lunch combination. The chips were good, but I much prefer a thinner white corn chip. The red salsa was very good; the creamy stuff was bland. The rice and beans were above average. The guacamole was a mess. It was bland, and the whole tostada--with guacamole, lettuce and chopped tomatoes--was slathered in something sweet and weird. I just pushed it aside. Excellent crispy taco shell, but the carne molida was dry, overcooked and disappointing. The cheese enchilada was awful. Wrong cheese. I prefer (correct) American, not cheddar. But it was good quality cheddar and not that stringy, bubble gum consistency stuff I run into occasionally. There was only a trace of what I assumed was supposed to be the chili con carne gravy (per the menu) so I requested more gravy which was thin, bland and somewhat tomato tasting, not chili con carne sauce. I ate the rice, beans, taco and a couple bites of enchilada--and left hungry. The service was outstanding.

During that time, it has easily become one of my favorite restaurants in all of Austin. I absolutely love the food and the rooftop patio that overlooks downtown/the park, and it will forever be somewhere I continue to go, especially during happy hour. I have tried every vegetarian item on their menu, and while everything is great, my personal favorites are: - cheese enchiladas with mole verde (I get this 99% of the time because they are my favorite enchilada in town) - the chile rellano (it's listed in the sides, but I promise you that it can be a meal in itself) - their rice (comes with many of their plates or inside of their enchiladas) is actually soooooo good and one of the things I look forward to - queso (nothing different about it, but it's just a really good standard queso) - flaquita (spicy watermelon margarita; I don't need to say more) - sangria blanca (super refreshing) Up until a few months ago, I would have given this place five stars, but I've noticed a decline in service that is making me knock it down to a four. For example, they used to give free chips and salsa the second you sat down, but the last three times, I've had to ask them for it (pro tip: ask for chips and salsa!!). I've also noticed slower and less attentive service. Overall, I still love El Alma, and when it comes to food and vibes, it has withstood the test of time. Everyone I introduce to El Alma falls in love (my sister visits me once a year, and El Alma is always on the agenda). Not only have I been coming here multiple times a year for the past five years, but I know I will be coming for as long as they are around.
