Taco goodness on Koenig/Allandale/2222/290! I stopped by this place a couple of months ago and got gringoed. Ever been gringoed? Got the gringo treatment? Well I got it the first time I stopped by. It took 15 minutes to get my breakfast tacos. They were cold by the time I got them. I've noticed this happens the first time you go into a primarily Spanish speaking restaurant. I hate getting gringoed, especially since I'm about 45% Hispanic and took 5 years of Spanish in high school and college. Of course it doesn't help that I can say exactly Nada in Spanish - two years of German knocked it all out of my brain. I can say "nothing" in German, in the sense that I can mimic Sgt Schulz from Hogan's Heroes. Seems my brain can hold exactly 1.00001 languages. I hate writing bad reviews though, I decided to give it another chance later on. I had always thought of this place as another Taqueria Jalisco. But recently I've noticed the sign saying Jesus Maria Mexican Restaurant Taqueria de Jalisco. I figured where better to go on all saints day than Jesus and Mary's tacos? This time the service was great. I walked right up to the counter and ordered 1 bacon, egg and potato taco. I had it in approximately 2 minutes. Waitresses are gorgeous, and were very nice to me this time. Who knows maybe I was just unlucky the first time. The tacos are kinda tiny, which is why they looked at me funny when I ordered just one. They have a deal where you get three for $2.75. This morning, mine was just about perfect. Strips of bacon laid over fresh scrambled eggs laid over fried potatoes on a warm flour tortilla. Do you see that yellow building next to the washateria and across from the abandoned car dealership? That's Cheko's, and despite it being right in the middle of Brentwood/Allendale, it lives up your hole-in-the-wall cheap tex-mex expectations. It's kind of like watching a heavily-hyped, dumb comedy, like Anchor Man, or even better it's like an old wooden ship - What I mean is, don't go in with high expectations and you'll come out full-bellied and pleasantly surprised at how much money you didn't spend. -- "Sit wherever you like," yells a disembodied voice coming from somewhere behind the counter. With your laptop in-tow, you find an awkwardly shaped booth that feels OK, but not quite right, further encouraging the feeling that you're about to eat some cheap ass food. By the time you get connected to the free wifi, realize it doesn't work, connect to the neighboring washateria's wifi, you've already had a couple of chips with salsa. For such a cheap place, they sure have decently fresh-tasting salsa. You can tell they've recently cut the onions too. There are A LOT of onions. Your sad attempt at putting some of the onions back into the salsa leads to droplets of tomato and onion on the table, but thankfully they've provided you with a few good-sized napkins. The waitress, who is now laughing at you, asks what you want to drink. At Cheko's, there are only two proper answers to the question: a $1.50 Dos Equis on draft, or a margarita. The margaritas are nothing special, but if you're in a mood, then they will serve you justice. $1.50 pints is, well you know, awesome. -- I've had many things on the menu, but if I had to recommend one, it would be the combination plate. Choose two meats, swap the refried beans for charro, and for $7, you've got a plate full of meat, beans, rice, lettuce, tomato and avocado with a tortilla warmer with a few small tortillas inside. Whatever you do, do NOT get the barbacoa - It's really awful. Looks like little brown hairs of meat grease and tastes no better. Get the chicken and something else. -- You take the advice of that random yelp review and grab the combination plate. "Holy cow, that's a lot of food!" By your second taco, you're feeling lethargic and full, but that instinct of completing a task, to clean your plate, to eat all of that delicious food kicks in. You make that last taco and pile all of your beans and remaining chicken onto it. After dousing it with their verde hot sauce, you're a bit sniffly from the spiciness, but hey, at least you made it through. After completing 3 pints and all of your food, you go to the counter to inquire about your bill. "$12?! That doesn't feel right." Despite having such a cheap bill, you feel obliged to tip a higher-than-normal percentage even though the service wasn't that great. I used to stop here all the time for a torta on my way home when it was one of its many previous incarnations. I always liked their bread. In its current incarnation, this was my third visit. The first time was with my not-my-girlfriend-at-the-time, and I had the Molé enchiladas, which were better than I expected. The friendly older lady, who treated the whole place as her own dinner guests was wonderful and brought us some warm green sauce that was outstanding. The second time, I stopped for breakfast tacos to go, and my NMGATT ended up not really eating much because, in her words, "How can they screw up bacon? I love bacon and I don't want to eat this!" Well, I stopped in here again for lunch, wanting to try out the torta. It's a good price, but I ended up choosing not to order it. Why? Chicken Fajita. NO NO NO! I know you can get an avocado torta here, which I appreciate, but an avocado torta is just a cold sammich. I want a hot and cold experience, and chicken fajita just doesn't do well for me on a torta. Plus, no beans were on their tortas. I could've asked them to put it on there, but I feel that I'd like to judge their torta as it comes. So, I opted for the Chicken Flautas. And I'm glad I did. These were some of the best flautas I've had in a while. The texture of the tortillas was great, and just crispy enough without being too tough or chewy. I asked for a side of the green sauce, and was brought a bowl of a cold salsa that didn't quite taste the same as my first time there. That being said, it had decent flavor and heat. The service was lacking a little, as there was some miscommunication as to who my waiter was. Once that was realized, my service was great. Word to the wise, their margaritas are made with wine. My initial review was when this place was called Jesus Maria Taqueria. I loved it then for the flavor it gave my neighborhood. Cheko's is about 1/3 less tacky (no giant Jesus Maria altar, slightly quieter jukebox, rainbow ceiling fans covered with bronze spraypaint), and if my go-to dish (torta de aguacate) is any indication, it has better food at better prices. Today's lunch was $2.75 for the torta (it was $3.50 from the Virgen and on a less fluffy French roll in that incarnation); my date's lunch special (chicken flautas, rice and beans) was $4.95 -- less than $8 before tax and tip is unbeatable for sit-down service (quiet, competent, quick waitstaff with Spanish as a first language) in these parts! Ok, so this is weird, but, Chekos is, like... my... favorite... uhhh... restaurant? Maybe? Historically speaking. I have eaten there more than any other place this year, possibly including my own home and the restaurant that I worked at through June. It's just so... comfortable. Like some weird shirt you can't stop wearing. My lunch standbys are the torta cubana, which I can only get if I have someone to share with. Otherwise, a regular torta will do. Or, a burrito with chicken, add rice. For breakfast, a taco with huevos y nopalitos, plus a side of rice and beans. Perks: Coffee is $1, Dos Equis is $1 during happy hour (which is, basically, all day), the corn tortillas are homemade and a spicy green salsa is available by request. Service can be inconsistent, but just chill out and get your daily dose of News 8 or read the Chronicle while you enjoy some complimentary chips and salsa. Cheap Tex-Mex? Check Lots of food? Check Cheap beers? Check Chekos is unassuming in the way you'd want every hole in the wall Tex-Mex rastaurant to be. Chekos isn't going to charge you some ridiculous price for small portions of artisanal food. No, Chekos is going to charge you a nominal price for a large serving of stick-to-your-bones Tex-Mex. I hope you came hungry! The cheese enchiladas are your standard fare - nothing to write home about, but they do the trick in a pinch. The bean and cheese breakfast tacos are pretty yummy. The red salsa is good, but the green salsa is the best, especially on one of the aforementioned breakfast tacos. Service is lacking at times, but who cares? Go with the flow. Beers are also lacking at times, meaning almost every time I come in, they are out. That's good for them and sad for me. I think I've had one of their margaritas? If I can't remember, they can't have been too special. The sopapillas are gross. Stay away. It's only $2 for one large sopapilla, but nope, nope, nope. Chekos and I just broke up, for good. I've always been put off by the quality of their food and choice of ingredients, but it's location in Brentwood made it an easy meeting place. They've always been menu Nazis in the sense that if its not on the dish description be prepared to hear from the Mexican lady who runs the place. "NO SUBSTITUTIONS!!!" I've always found this particularly unfair for the vegetarians since there isn't a single item on their lunch special that doesn't have meat. Just simply having one exception: Avocado for meat would pacify any vegetarians demands. Nope, not for Chekos! After speaking with the owner over the concerns of a long-time customer she disregarded much of the logic that governs the realm of customer service, and without much effort to maintain her clientele she said if I didn't like it I could leave. I always had faith that things would change for Chekos, but today the final drop hit the bucket of water. The food sucks and always has, management has no idea of what customer service means, quality price discrepancy is rampant, and your chained to the rules of the menu. Why does this place still exist!? Well, there's a certain heartwarming kitsch that I once found endearing of Chekos but it's so sad to see such disrespect of the people who have been supporting that business for so long. Small businesses fail because they fail maintaining relationships with their customers. I'm sorry to say, make way for some more mixed-use condos because Chekos is diggin' its own grave this year. read more

Well, cheap is nice, I suppose. I'm willing to forgive the slow and confused service, which is rare for me. I went around 6:30pm on a Friday, so it was either shift change or a bigger dinner rush than they were used to. The three servers who came to my table were all friendly and apologetic about the long waits. I would like to think that if I had gone at a different time of day, things would have gone faster. That said, I waited a really long time for some low quality food. The "nachos" were 8 tortilla pieces covered in fast food beef (but with less seasoning) and greasy cheap yellow cheese. At least the cheese wasn't liquid. The whole reason I was in Chekos to start with was because I was craving a chile relleno and I was told they were cheap and tasty here. It was certainly a cheap chile relleno. It had the same low quality, unseasoned meat as the nachos, this time stuffed into a tired fried pepper. And of course, the whole thing was smothered in that junk cheese. I'm not sure if the puddle of grease the whole thing was sitting in was more a result of the cheese or that the pepper was fried into submission. I don't want to know. The whole thing was just greasy and flavorless and depressing. Just thinking about it is making me sad for the chile relleno that could have been. Next time I want cheap, I'll stick with Taco Cabana. (#94) And the quest to 100 continues ..and don't get the wrong impression about the 2 stars..plain and simple..we have had better..Not the fact it wasn't decent..definitely 3 stars for for amount of food for the price..$6 for 3 Chiladas, beans and rice is a good deal..service was a decent..we always start with the staple items...Chips, queso and salsa..and it came with 2 different heat styles..red (bowl)had a decent kick and was a great add to the Queso..green sauce in the bottle caught my taste buds...tomatillo based with a spicy Kick!!..wife's beef Chiladas were good, but the down side was the red sauce..very plain and they use potato with the beef, as a cheap filler and the ratio was 50/50..which should be advertised..rice also had potato, but not as much yet a nice touch..something different..if you order beef Chiladas should be all beef!..my Chicken Chiladas...were decent ..chicken moist...green sauce was a bit tart, lacked heat..But with a few dabbles of the bottled green sauce was spot on..charro beans had flavor, a lot of juice and not enough beans..I will let you make your own call on this..our quest continues to 100!!!..Don't ever be scared to try something new!!..you may be surprised at what you find..:) read more

I had to update my Cheko's review as it has become my go-to neighborhood Mexican joint. Two words: tortilla soup. I could eat this stuff everyday and never get sick of it. My latest obsession has been the crispy taco plate with a side of sour cream. I order this so much that the waitress asks if I want "the usual." This is the only place in town where I have a "usual" so that must be saying something. Everything I've had here has been good and the prices are totally reasonable. Do you love breakfast tacos? If so, -insert clever joke- You need to 'Check out Cheko's' Seriously. I went to Cheko's a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning for some taco gospel. I had the chorizo egg and cheese plate. Food was out fast- within 10 minutes of our order. The chorizo was cooked just right (not super greasy and not over cooked)- the flour tortillas were fresh as well. Best chorizo tacos I've had in a while. The prices were phenomenal as well. I had a huge plate of eggs, cheese and chorizo for under 4 bucks- including tortillas. Service was great too- I never had to ask for a refill on water or coffee. I have a love-hate relationship with this place. At first, I thought this place was great! $1 beer, great prices, and the food was decent. I even bought their t-shirt, so I could have $1 beer all the time. The owner's daughter sat and chatted with my friend and I; we had a blast. Since, the service has gone downhill. I don't appreciate getting judge-y looks from a particular server. It's like I'm bothering him by ordering another beer or simply that I'm requesting service in general. Honestly, I don't know what this guy's deal is. I always tip well, and I'm always polite. After I had banned this place for a while, I decided to go have lunch and give them another chance. I was hungry. I wanted a breakfast taco. I didn't want to drive anywhere. So I walked across the street to Cheko's. I've passed by so many times saying, "I need to try that place sometime..." So I finally did! The menu reminds me of Arandas BUT the place is MUCH cleaner and the staff is friendlier. Traditional Mexican fair (not Tex-Mex, but Mexican!), I was excited to see Tortas on the menu. And everything on the menu was cheap! The breakfast tacos were pretty good...I ordered two migas tacos (choice of flour or corn tortilla) and then 3 bacon egg and cheese (not all for me, or course!). They have a deal where you get three tacos and it comes with potatoes for under $3! The total bill came out to around $5. Not bad! The miga tacos were good...the cheese on all was nice and melted, and they used the white cheese (not the shredded yellow stuff). They also have a full bar, with $3 margaritas. They had a carne asada special for $5 or $6. I'll definitely return and try a torta or some menudo! P.S. I did not give Cheko's 4 or 5 stars because I was not blown away by the breakfast tacos. I've been going to Cheko's for several years now, and I've never been disappointed. I tell the friends that I take there the same thing every time: this may not be the best Mexican food in town, but for the prices you pay, it's incredible. You'd be hard pressed to find something for more than $7 on the entire menu, and most things are $5 or less. I usually go in for brunch with my lady. We split the Huevos a la Mexicana (delicious egg scramble with veggies and cheese, served with tortillas, beans and papas), get a chili con queso to start, and we get out of there for $13 bucks (including coffee, drinks, etc.). The service is great, the staff is friendly and the people that go there are pleasant to be around. One of the most amazing thing about Chekos is the happy hour, which is 7 hours every single day. From 3-10 pm on the weekdays, you can $1.50 Dos XX. Basically, their happy hour is every single day, which is unheard of. Chekos is my go-to on Saturday mornings, and will continue to be as long as they continue to serve quality food for crazy cheap prices. Bonus: free wi-fi, decent coffee -- actually a really great place to work if you do the remote thing. read more

Look, what can I say, chekos is dank. Cheap as hell, and exactly what you want Tex Mex to be. Service is friendly, but in a non invasive way, as it should be. Eat the chekos special burrito and you'll be satisfied and full of the classic melty American cheese we all want. Tortilla soup is top notch. There's lil bits of potato, corn, and carrots in the rice, which is delicious. Excellent creamy green sauce. Given that there's a ton of bullshit Texmex in Austin-- this place is legit! After seeing all the good reviews, my friend and I decided to try this place out for dinner. Previous reviewers, you were not kidding! This place really was up to par. It doesn't look that great on the outside but the inside is very cool. It was incredibly busy and there was only one waitress but I was surprised at how fast and friendly she was. I love ranchero sauce but it had been awhile since I'd eaten some that blew me away. At Cheko's- mmm mmm mmm! It was really fantastic. I found myself mixing the rice with it. The refried beans had a smoother texture than any other I've tried. And did I mention the prices? WOW! They rule. This place isn't far from my house and it's pretty close to N. I will agree Chekos is inexpensive and delicious but the front of house staff keep this restaurant from getting a higher score. They are disinterested and inattentive. Food wise I have tried both lunch and dinner here and was not disappointed with the food either time. Had shrimp enchiladas for lunch and crispy tacos for dinner. The enchiladas were filled with tiny shrimp and the plate well put together. Crispy tacos were actually crispy and the toppings were fresh. None of the soggy, greasy mess you find at alot of other restaurants. Rice and beans with both plates were solid. Don't expect "grandmother" quality but they hit the spot and I think grandma would have eaten them too. There are few outside tables which is nice because the neighborhood is quiet in the evening and they do have a selection of both soft and adult beverages. This is how it should be: cheap, good, quick. Since moving into the Brentwood neighborhood, Chekos has rapidly become my go-to for cheap, consistently good Mexican food. Their breakfast tacos are good and simple, while their breakfast burritos can conquer the largest appetite and/or hangover. The best thing about this place is really the fact that two people can come in for most any meal of the day with only $10 bucks between them, and leave full and satisfied. I cannot think of any standard fast food restaurant that can accomplish that anymore. read more

I've ran, biked, and driven past this place so so so many times and have meant to check it out. Finally, after cheering on the Austin marathon at the corner right there, we decided to give it a go. Sadly, I wasn't all that impressed and with my all time favorites of Casa Chalapa, El Mercado, and El Arroyo just as close, I probably won't frequent this place. First of all, the place had unbussed tables all over. It was a Sunday at 11am, and I bet they were more busy because of the marathon, but, just sayin' - most of the place was empty but almost all the tables were dirty. Once we found a spot, our server was friendly and prompt. Heck, we had our waters and chips in minutes and our food shortly after that. The quantities of food were GREAT for the price. I got a heaping plate of fajitas (2 meals worth) for 11 bucks. The problem? Nothing was that great. The re-fried beans and rice were decent, as were the chips and salsa, and the corn tortillas were pretty fresh and homemade. As for the rest, It tasted like they forgot to put any seasoning in most of our food. The chicken and peppers just tasted like oil. No spice, no flavor. My husband compared his pork to dog food. We took most of it home and shook some taco seasoning on it and it was actually much better but why should we have to do that? I'm really in between 2 and 3 stars, the quantity and service were definitely good, but the deciding factor is that I just didn't like the food all that much. I went here this morning with my mom and her dude friend for breakfast tacos. I was surprised at how good they were. I am starting to think that Chekos may one day be as good as Jesus Maria was. I ordered one bacon potato and cheese, and one potato and chorizo. This is one of the few places where they actually put strips of bacon on the taco, not chopped bacon(yay) and the chorizo was flavorful without being overpowering. I also ordered one nopalitos and egg, because my mom's dude friend had never had cactus, and it was pretty darned tasty. The salsa is good, a little watery, but good. This is for an ordering to-go experience. I came here on a lunch break, and I've heard good things about their tacos, so I had to "chek" it out for myself. I ordered beef fajita, pastor, and barbacoa, all on flour tortillas. These things were DELICIOUS, and I'm not just saying that because I was hungry. They ask you if you want lettuce and tomato in your taco, or you can get cilantro and onion, of course I opted for cilantro and onion. They gave me my tacos, with plenty of limes and salsa verde, in a very timely manner. The tacos were just a tad small, but, hey, that's why they're so cheap! I'm just glad I got more than 2 :D The barbacoa was tender and moist with not too much fat at all! They put a good amount of meat in there for the size of the taco, with plenty of cilantro and onion. That was basically my experience with all the tacos, so they definitely get an A+. The only thing, and this is a minor detail, that I had an issue with is that the fajita cuts were a little small; there was plenty of meat in there, for it almost looked like ground beef, but it did taste delish, and who can really tell once it's being digested? The woman who took my order was really friendly and made conversation, always a plus. This is definitely a good choice for a cheap and quick lunch in the area, and they're open all day, so I'd definitely come back for dinner. Also, they have a happy hour! Been in for to-go breakfast tacos / burritos several times and they are tasty and a good, reasonable size. Three things though: 1. Make sure you check what they wrote on the ticket. I have caught mistakes more than once standing right there and literally (yes, I mean literally) never had a correct result when I called the order in on the phone. I just gave up calling ahead and now go to Checko's, place my order, run over to Thunderbird and grab some to-go coffee, then go back to Checko's to pick up. Works like a charm. 2. Ask for the green sauce. It's actually yellow if you ask me, but it has much more character and heat than the default red sauce. Waaaay better. 3. Eat there soon. They are so cheap that I can't believe they are charging the correct prices and wonder how long they can last. I hope they do though, they seem like nice folks with a good product. read more
