Now if you are looking for a guajillo salsa - made only with prime Santa Rosa Mirasol chiles from the February Harvesting - sun dried on a mesquite board - then flavored with Cortez tomatillos, Valle Hermanosa cumin, and aged Cayman limes, may I recommend the Bistro Mexicano in Malibu Beach where Taylor Swift eats? Pretty darned good is a perfect summation of Cheko's. In the current Mexican food environment, you're often faced with a choice between classic Tex-Mex and a more authentic taqueria style. Cheko's is one of the few places I've found that straddles the line and does it all well. I'd also note that Cheko's may well be the Mexican food of a neighborhood diner. Friendly service, a menu filled with all of the usual comfort foods (including breakfast available past breakfast), and reasonable prices. Now -- on to the food. First, the chips and salsa are good. Everyone at the table gets an individual bowl of red salsa, which becomes strangely addictive after a while. The entire table also gets a squeeze bottle of a green sauce that neither of us tried. My beef fajita burrito was a pleasant surprise. The beef was cut into small bits more like one of the taquerias but the red sauce and melted yellow cheese were classic Tex-Mex comfort food. My dining companion raved about her chile relleno and particularly noted the spiciness which was probably from the seeds remaining in the pepper. If we both had one complaint, it would be the rice. It had an unusual seasoning and had a lot more vegetable bits than I like. Again, the star of the meal was the excellent service. Drinks were refilled promptly and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. It's clearly a family owned business and they rightfully show their pride in it. read more

Honestly, my friends and I come here way too often.. Granted, by no means is it the best Mexican food in Austin, but it's definitely not bad and you can't beat the price! The margaritas used to be super strong, and at $3.50 they were very much worth it. Lately though they have not been as strong and they have a bit too much sweet+sour in them. The food is pretty good though, I recommend the chicken mole enchiladas (my friends get these every single time), and the Picadillo is very good. read more

We stopped here after the place we intended to eat at was closed for the night, and man, am I glad we did!! First, as soon as you enter, you are greeted like family and the dining room feels comfortable. The staff are great- we met Cheko himself, that night and he is very friendly too. This place used to be good! It's Horrible now! We ordered Huevos Rancho and there was no flavor or onion in the sauce. Refried beans were so runny a spoon might have worked and the potatoes are one of the cheapest things to serve. Don't save your old ones and refry them it will only give us what we got today which was hard and old papas! Even the salsa has no flavoring which is why there was only one other table there in the place. Even when items were brought to their attention a shrug of the shoulders was given. I'm very happy I just discovered this little neighborhood spot. I went there on a Saturday morning to get some takeout plates for my family. I forgot my reading glasses and as I was struggling to read the menu, the owner came over and let me borrow his. We both got a laugh out of it but he really did help me out. It's little touches like this that really makes it feel like a family-owned business. I thought that was going to be the highlight of my experience but my family couldn't say enough about the quality of the food. They were super impressed with how good it was and how much there was! My first time here and trying their breakfast. The prices are amazingly low as previous review stated. I've ordered the huevos la Mexicana with a side of barbacoa. Rest of the family ordered the huevos Ranchero with bacon, small bowl of menudo and carne guisada with cheese taco. The place is cozy, clean, and the service is excellent. My plate was good tasty. If I had to suggest, it would be to serve a more lean barbacoa and smaller diced potatoes. Their menudo is excellent with flavor, though it could use some hominy. The rice is really special with bits of potato and corn; just enough to make it interesting. Beans were well flavored, vegetables fresh and the meats were tender. Also, I ordered a Coke and it came in a nice big ruby red plastic glass .... I love those kind of glasses. The chips and salsa served free before the meal were great. I didn't have the green salsa others talked about here, but the red was plenty flavorful and the chips were warm and crisp and thin. Service was friendly. I ordered completely in English 'cos I'm embarrassed about how awful my Spanish is, but they were plenty accommodating. I don't see what all the fuss is about this place. Came for lunch and got an enchilada plate. Everything was brown -- brown colored rice, brown refried beans, brown sauce on the enchiladas. This place is def going to be one of my regulars. I have been trying out several "Mexican" restaurants for their mole and finally came across the right place. From the mole to their shrimp it's all delicious, portions are great and taste is authentic. Well I'm now a Chekos fan boy. Stopped by late on a Sat afternoon with about 10+ hungry and thirsty folks. Happy hour prices for beer and Margies were very reasonable. Menu items equally reasonable. The endless chips and spicy salsa kept us busy until our entrees arrived. My Barbacoa Torta was awesome with the additional of a little hot sauce and it was perfect. Others were raving about their tacos and assorted sandwiches. One person was not really fond of their mole but mole can be spiced so many ways that it's a personal preference. Even though Checkos is a bit of a ride I'm placing in my happy hour rotation for drinks and an early dinner. To top if off, the server refused to provide a refill on my Coke. The prices were so low, I kept thinking the menu online must be old and outdated. But no, everything is that cheap. I usually get my food to go, so I never order the plates. Sides of beans and rice don't generally travel well. My first time, I ordered a chicken fajita torta and a torta cubana. Both were ok. Around 8 bucks. The chicken fajita torta was $3 and big, so while it was mediocre, it was a good way to pick up cheap dinner and finish up at the washateria next door. However, almost everything else I've had has been amazing. The beef fajita gordita ($3.50) is loaded with cheese, beef, and onions. The bean and cheese nachos ($4.50) came with an entire separate container full of guacamole, sour cream, and jalapenos. When I finally had an Al Pastor torta, it was phenomenal. I've only eaten inside once. Friendly service, decent chips and salsa. Looked like they had a really good happy hour, but it was Sunday morning. Service is fast. Chekos is a lovely, "hole in the wall" type Mexican restaurant. Nothing fancy, no frills, just delicious, home-cooked style Mexican food. Prices are so cheap (especially for their breakfast plates) you wonder how they stay in business. This is our go-to place for breakfast when we just want to roll out of bed and grab an inexpensive, tasty bite to eat. A special shout out for the tortilla soup - rich chicken broth, shredded chicken, rice, extra crisp tortilla strips, and fresh avocado. Delicious. I especially like that the place is clearly family run, and that the grandmotherly lady who runs the place calls my very non-Hispanic looking son "mi hijo." So cute. For those of you complaining about the slow service, we've never had any issues, although I can see that if it got super-busy, service might have trouble keeping up. But I'm guessing that is because they just run the place with family to keep prices low. That doesn't bother me any. And what, you gonna yell at your grandma for being slow with the salsa? Had to ask for chips and salsa during lunch service. We ordered an agua fresca, a water and a coke. we received an agua Fresca and two waters. it took 20 minutes to get the coke. I ordered Carne asada con nopales. The meat was over cooked and under seasoned. The cactus was ok, but bland. Everything was served on the dumped out bottom of a bag of shredded lettuce. The charro beans were bland, undercooked and had a slice of a hotdog instead of actual pork on it. Tinned beenie weenies have better flavor. The corn tortillas were gross and if they weren't kept in the warmer got super hard and tasted like cardboard. Maybe it was an off day, but I can't forgive hot dog slices in my beans. read more

Taco goodness on Koenig/Allandale/2222/290! I stopped by this place a couple of months ago and got gringoed. Ever been gringoed? Got the gringo treatment? Well I got it the first time I stopped by. It took 15 minutes to get my breakfast tacos. They were cold by the time I got them. I've noticed this happens the first time you go into a primarily Spanish speaking restaurant. I hate getting gringoed, especially since I'm about 45% Hispanic and took 5 years of Spanish in high school and college. Of course it doesn't help that I can say exactly Nada in Spanish - two years of German knocked it all out of my brain. I can say "nothing" in German, in the sense that I can mimic Sgt Schulz from Hogan's Heroes. Seems my brain can hold exactly 1.00001 languages. I hate writing bad reviews though, I decided to give it another chance later on. I had always thought of this place as another Taqueria Jalisco. But recently I've noticed the sign saying Jesus Maria Mexican Restaurant Taqueria de Jalisco. I figured where better to go on all saints day than Jesus and Mary's tacos? This time the service was great. I walked right up to the counter and ordered 1 bacon, egg and potato taco. I had it in approximately 2 minutes. Waitresses are gorgeous, and were very nice to me this time. Who knows maybe I was just unlucky the first time. The tacos are kinda tiny, which is why they looked at me funny when I ordered just one. They have a deal where you get three for $2.75. This morning, mine was just about perfect. Strips of bacon laid over fresh scrambled eggs laid over fried potatoes on a warm flour tortilla. (Option for Corn) I'm going back and bringing my wife, you can never have too many places to get a good taco. Salsa seemed canned, but was good too. Do you see that yellow building next to the washateria and across from the abandoned car dealership? That's Cheko's, and despite it being right in the middle of Brentwood/Allendale, it lives up your hole-in-the-wall cheap tex-mex expectations. It's kind of like watching a heavily-hyped, dumb comedy, like Anchor Man, or even better it's like an old wooden ship - What I mean is, don't go in with high expectations and you'll come out full-bellied and pleasantly surprised at how much money you didn't spend. -- "Sit wherever you like," yells a disembodied voice coming from somewhere behind the counter. With your laptop in-tow, you find an awkwardly shaped booth that feels OK, but not quite right, further encouraging the feeling that you're about to eat some cheap ass food. By the time you get connected to the free wifi, realize it doesn't work, connect to the neighboring washateria's wifi, you've already had a couple of chips with salsa. For such a cheap place, they sure have decently fresh-tasting salsa. You can tell they've recently cut the onions too. There are A LOT of onions. Your sad attempt at putting some of the onions back into the salsa leads to droplets of tomato and onion on the table, but thankfully they've provided you with a few good-sized napkins. The waitress, who is now laughing at you, asks what you want to drink. At Cheko's, there are only two proper answers to the question: a $1.50 Dos Equis on draft, or a margarita. The margaritas are nothing special, but if you're in a mood, then they will serve you justice. $1.50 pints is, well you know, awesome. -- I've had many things on the menu, but if I had to recommend one, it would be the combination plate. Choose two meats, swap the refried beans for charro, and for $7, you've got a plate full of meat, beans, rice, lettuce, tomato and avocado with a tortilla warmer with a few small tortillas inside. Whatever you do, do NOT get the barbacoa - It's really awful. Looks like little brown hairs of meat grease and tastes no better. Get the chicken and something else. -- You take the advice of that random yelp review and grab the combination plate. "Holy cow, that's a lot of food!" By your second taco, you're feeling lethargic and full, but that instinct of completing a task, to clean your plate, to eat all of that delicious food kicks in. You make that last taco and pile all of your beans and remaining chicken onto it. After dousing it with their verde hot sauce, you're a bit sniffly from the spiciness, but hey, at least you made it through. After completing 3 pints and all of your food, you go to the counter to inquire about your bill. "$12?! That doesn't feel right." Despite having such a cheap bill, you feel obliged to tip a higher-than-normal percentage even though the service wasn't that great. Oh well, you're full, you're happy, and now, you can face the world. read more
