This was my last meal in NY before heading home to CA. The Bun Bo Hue was good, I asked for it extra spicy but it wasn't. Their version was somewhat traditional with a heavier shrimp paste flavor but still a bit too Americanized for me. It doesn't have pork blood and came with the same accoutrements as pho, no cabbage. Crispy Summer Rolls was tasty but a little skimpy for the price. I was expecting to be a bit more wowed based on reviews but overall was still an enjoyable meal!
I like this place! It's quite small (maybe room for 30 people), but it wasn't too crowded when we went. Staff was friendly and helpful. We ordered mostly pho, which was really good. I'd recommend the Signature, as it's only $16 and quite delicious; they don't skimp on meat which is nice. The shortrib pho is the best tasting, but it's $25, so it's not the best deal. Personally, I'd come back for the leek pancake. It's almost mochi-like, but comes out steaming hot with dipping sauce. So so good! At only $10, it was excellent value. I'd def come again, or visit their new location (this one is the original).
Found this place on Yelp and came here for early dinner. This place is small and it gets full really quickly especially during dinner. For appetizers we got the fried salt and pepper squid and crispy wings. The salt and pepper squid was crispy and flavorful. The crispy wings were pretty good especially with the homemade sauce. I really enjoyed the bbq pork vermicelli. The pork was flavorful and I liked the combination of food in this dish. The pho was also good but the short rib was a little tough and dry. We could've done it without the short rib.
It's my second visit at this location. Staff is always friendly and quick to take your order. I really enjoy the chive pancakes and the Pho. Classic beef brisket, tendon and beef round pieces. The broth is great- not too salty and has that nice bone broth finish. The noodles are very good as far as texture and it's cooked just right. My friends like to order the truffle fries, guilty pleasure. And I like ordering the hot tea with my meal. It's good for digestion and they give you a small tea pot that yields over 6-8 cups of tea. Great for sharing. I've always over ordered so I've never had the desserts. Next time! I've also done take out and the go to besides the Pho are the grilled pork chops over rice. Two generous chops, grilled to perfection. Has grill marks and the fish sauce accompaniment is delicious. Totally recommend.
The food was great! Came here for dinner with my friends and had a good time. We ordered pho and the grilled pork chop over rice, along with a few appetizers, and everything was satisfying. Although, the fried salt and pepper squid could be a bit crispier, and it would've been nice if it came with a dipping sauce since it was a little bland on its own. My friends got thai iced tea, and I ordered a lychee thai tea. The staff were super nice and patient, didn't rush us to finish our food. Overall, great food and warm service. Would definitely come back or check out their LIC location.
This place is a gem among a street of cafés and mainly Korean restaurants. I come here a few times a month for takeaway if I have dance class down the road. I was first introduced to Chef Papa years ago through a Yelp Elite perk, but I have come back as a regular throughout the years. They consistently make bomb Bahn-mi's and authentic pho, but all of their classic menu offerings are fire. The Bahn-mi's are stuffed with pickled shredded carrots, fresh herbs & veggies, and a choice selection of meats. Personally, my favs range from the classic house special to smokey grilled pork chop to fragrant lemongrass chicken, but you can't go wrong with any of them. The crusty bread and fresh ingredients makes everything taste really authentic (in fact, I attest to housing this behind the wheel... I couldn't even wait til I got home!) The classic pho comes with a broth that is rich, deeply aromatic, earthy, with fresh herbs, poured over perfectly cooked chewy noodles topped with tender meat & tendons. It's one of those broths that lingers for a while and you can't wait to have again. I can't forget to rave about their shrimp summer rolls: super fresh and light -- definitely best eaten right away while the rice paper is still soft and everything inside tastes crisp. For $7, this can make for a mini- lunch or hearty snack to you tie you over between meals. The peanut sauce on the side is the perfect accompaniment to bring everything together. While the above three are my regular goto favs, on my most recent visit, I ordered the Bun Bo Hue and the grilled pork chop vermicelli -- both were seriously good. The Bun Bo Hue had a really rich, flavorful broth with just the right amount of spice. Even though I ordered it mild, it still had a significant kick (so fair warning to those who cannot handle spicy). Hubby ended up devouring that one. The hearty broth was simmered properly as noted by that deep, comforting flavor. The grilled pork chop vermicelli was just as solid. The pork was juicy and nicely charred, with a slightly smoky sweetness that paired really well with the fresh herbs and pickled veggies. The chewy noodle underneath soaked up all the collective juices. The portion size was generous that I had enough for lunch the next day. Overall, it's a great spot if you're craving authentic, comforting Vietnamese food. Friendly and fast service too. Pro tip: 3% discount if you pay in cash. Everything I've tried over the years has tasted balanced and fresh. I'll definitely keep coming back to try more from the menu!
This place is adorable and quaint. Come off peak hours to grab a seat for a larger group because the place is popular. Service is polite and quick. Ordered a few things to try and the winner was the pho. The pho is light but the broth is flavorful and exactly what you want with meat to noodle ratio. The reason for the rating is everything else. We had the pork chop over rice, chicken wings and sandwich. All delicious in flavor but seriously sweet. It was tough for my palette to digest the sweetness in every bite for these meals. Perhaps it was just a heavy hand this time or the marinade was just off this time. Willing to try it again just for the broth and attempt the sandwich again.
I came here with a girlfriend yesterday after hearing about the social media drama tied to this place. We came on a Saturday for lunch and were seated immediately - the restaurant had ample seating for about 8-10 parties! We started with the Thai iced tea, and also got the veg spring rolls as an app, and they were good, standard Vietnamese spring rolls! Thai tea was also good, but standard! For mains we ordered the signature pho and lemongrass chicken. The pho broth was sensational but the beef felt a little overcooked to me. I would order just the broth and noodles next time w no meat! The lemongrass chicken was also good, chicken was so flavourful but felt like the platter itself was missing something. Overall, delicious meal, great for cold days. I soooo disagree with the horrendous review from the social media influencer, this place is a little hole in the wall and has good food! Plus points for clean bathroom, but the parking situation is a little bit of a nightmare!
I've eaten in person multiple times before, but this is for a delivery order. The service is usually attentive. They have hoisin and sriracha on every table, as well as a QR code for an online menu. I normally get a Regular Pho, but was in the mood for something different. The Bon Bo Hue had a great balance of sour and spicy, and you can definitely taste the shrimp paste. It smelled so fragrant. The noodles had a good chew to them. However, the meats were a bit overdone, especially the beef, which I didn't finish. This could be due to it being delivery, but was a bit disappointed since their meats (especially the over rice or vermicelli dishes) are usually cooked well. The Salted Lemon Drink was packaged securely. Flavor wise, it reminded me of Umeboshi, there's actual salted lemons in the drink! Overall, a decent spot to hit. Just be sure to pick and choose what you order if you're getting delivery.
Limited seating so be prepared to wait ~30 mins, especially on a rainy day when everyone wants pho! The Lemongrass Beef Banh Mi was actually very filling with generous portion of beef - the picture is misleading cause there is more pickled carrots but believe that the beef is tender, juicy, flavorful and plentiful! We also enjoyed the Vietnamese Pancake, which was also loaded inside - I particularly enjoyed the mung beans, which I've never had in a Bahn Xeo but it added this nuttiness and savory taste I enjoyed.
Chef Papa's Vietnamese kitchen is this cute quaint restaurant in Flushing Queens. I absolutely love the food here. It definitely gives a nod to old-school Vietnamese food with a bit of a flare. My favorite was the lemongrass Pork chops. And you must try the lychee soda. The service was great. And I highly recommend. read more

i got the grilled pork vermicelli, my partner ordered pho, and we got a fried spring roll as an appetizer. Food portions were overall pretty large, thai iced tea was great. The only critique i have is that the pork was slightly too salty even before the fish sauce. The service isn't amazing but not bad at all, honestly felt bad that we were dining in during their lunch break. Overall interior is very nice but small. Try it out! read more
Always loved the food here, especially the porkchop over rice, summer rolls, and of course the signature pho. However, the grilled pork chop recently has been dry and way overcooked. Better sitting arrangements would allow for better use of such a small space. read more

We came here for dinner around 7pm on a week night with a group of friends and were immediately seated upon arrival. We ordered a banh xeo and spring rolls for the table with a bowl of pho of our choice for each of us. It was my first time trying banh xeo and I surprisingly learned that it was not an omelette but rather turmeric colored rice flour with a seafood pancake inside. It was not my favorite personally but everything else was great. The bun bo hue really hit the spot on a cold fall evening in NYC and flavor was on point. The restaurant filled up quickly after we arrived and it seems like this is definitely a go to pho spot for locals in the area. read more

Came to Chef Papa to get some warm noodles on a chilly day. We ordered the Summer Roll (shrimp - $12.36), Signature Pho ($15.45), and Bun Bo Hue ($16.48). And i ordered the Minced Pork Banh mi ($11.33) to go. Summer Roll - This was our favorite from what we ordered because it is not often where you see mango in the summer rolls. It was refreshing and the peanut sauce paired nicely. My only complaint is I wish the rolls were not cut so small because it makes it hard to hold and eat. Signature Pho - This included rice noodles, rare eye of round beef, brisket, tendon, and a beef ball, submerged in beef pho broth. It was filling. Bun Bo Hue - This included thicker round noodles with brisket, beef shank, Vietnamese park ham, and pork knuckles, submerged in a spicy beef and shrimp paste broth. Minced Pork Banh mi - Included Vietnamese ham, minced pork, a few slices of cucumber, and carrots in a Banh mi. What's odd about this sandwich is that everything on the inside was quite salty, so I was not a fan. Went to chef papa with some friends yesterday after passing it by a ton of times, we were welcomed in promptly and I'd say everything was comfortable and clean. The service was prompt and easy and the menu was concise and to the point which made it very easy for us to figure out what we wanted. On to the food though because that was the star of the show. I wouldn't say anything we ordered was bad in the slightest. I got the bun bo hue my friend got the short rib pho. The appetizers we had were really good and made us excited for the meal. Cuisine: 5 Service: 7 Decor: 6 Value: 6 Overall: 6 I really wanted to like this place and didn't mind paying a bit higher prices compared to my usual Phong Bang or Thai Son for Vietnamese cuisine. However, this place had unfortunately way more misses than hits. Fried Spring Rolls (4/10) - Definitely a thicker wrapper and the filling was not as tasty as usual. Lighter fish sauce also contributed to it being below average. Fried Chicken Wings (4/10) - Super crunchy exterior that plumps up so much that it makes the wing feel hallow. Dunked in honey and got no real taste other than sweet. Banh Xeo (6/10) - The best part of this dish was the extra crispy egg crepe. However, the filling was just meh. Also, the sweet mung beans were weird. House Special Banh Mi (7/10) - The bread was toasty and fluffy and the cold cuts were good. However, I wish I could taste the pate a little more, while the ground pork was somewhat too sweet, and the veggies weren't pickled enough. Regardless of these small issues, it was definitely the best thing of the night. Signature Pho (6/10) - Average bowl of noodles with less than stellar quality beef. The soup flavor was decent but honestly not beefy enough. Chicken Pho (3/10) - Why are they using grilled chicken thigh meat in this dish. I wanted a clean traditional bowl of pho ga, and instead got the worst version I ever had. Bun Bo Hue (6/10) - By far the most shrimp paste flavor I have ever tasted with this dish. While I enjoy the funk, I didn't taste much of the lemongrass flavor commonly associated with this broth. The meats were fine, but quite little and nothing special. Also, missing some pork blood. Grilled Pork Chop over Rice (3/10) - Forgettable. Very likely the worst Vietnamese pork chops I ever had. It was more like jerky than a tender piece of grilled meat. The servers were kind enough, and the location has decent night time street parking. However, if I come back, it'll likely be to try other banh mi sandwiches on their menu since we lack good ones in Queens. read more

It's rare to find an authentic pho place but chef papa always hits the spot. This is always my go to place when I'm craving pho. I always get the regular or signature pho and the summer rolls. The Thai ice tea is always good too. The service is also always very nice. The ambiance is also nice since it's not too loud but it's not dead silent either. read more
Weather was cold and wet, so what better time to get some pho! We have been meaning to try this place for a while because of the 4+ Yelp rating. Finally got here and very happy to find this place! Started with an order of summer rolls, which menu said consists of 2 rolls. The plate came out and their rolls must be huge because they cut them into 4 pieces each! The tolls could be more tightly wrapped and the peanut sauce could use a little more hoisin but fortunately, there is a bottle of hoisin sauce at each table to remedy that issue. As for the pho, the broth was one of the deepest and tastiest I have had in a while! My only issue is that sriracha sauce on the table did not taste like Hoy Fung even though the rooster bottle would suggest otherwise. I always put sriracha in the pho and this was a little outlier and did not have the usual y Hoy Fung depth. Next time (and there will definitely be a next time), I will bring my own sriracha to enjoy the broth! read more

This is probably my go to viet place in flushing! It's not walking distance for me but I will gladly drive 10 mins to this spot. Parking isn't bad around this area and the food is goooood! The pho was super flavorful and the spring rolls were great too. Very meaty and worth the $$$. I also got the lychee drink and it was super refreshing. The pho is definitely one of the best I've had in flushing, the other areas are hit or miss depending on the day so this will be my regular from now on :) read more

Needed my pho fix and was around the area and decided to try. Service was excellent. Friendly staff and very attentive. Constantly filling water. It was a mostly Korean crowd as we were in the Korean part of Flushings. Was a little sus about the food but ordered a bunch and it was much better than I expected. The crispy summer roll which is basically summer roll with additional spring roll inside of it. It was refreshing and tasty. The spicy noodle was very good. The noodle texture was very soft and just right for this dish. The pho was good and hit the spot but the flavor lacked depth and is not as complex as most Pho spots. The grilled pork vermicelli was a disappointment. The pork was way overcooked and tough. Prices were decent and therefore good value. Would visit again just for the spicy noodle. read more

Small quaint place, friendly staff. We ordered the summer roll, spring roll, and Bánh xèo for apps. Summer roll was fine and as expected, spring rolls were thick but lacking flavor. It wasn't bad but compared to others I have had, it was not very tasty and expensive at $12 for 4. I enjoyed the Bánh xèo but it was my first time trying it so no comparison. For dinner we had the House Special Banh mi, the bread was really good, toasty but not too crunchy or dry. But it lacked balance, a tad too sweet, needed more cold cuts and vegetables for that crisp. All I tasted was the minced bbq pork. The grilled pork chop over rice was not a favorite, it was very thin and a tad dry. The taste reminded us of Chinese sausage. The Grilled Lemongrass Beef Over Rice was tasty, a bit too tenderized but my friend liked it overall. I did not appreciate the timing of the meal as the last appetizer came out, so did the entrees. The staff really needs to time this so guests have time to enjoy their appetizers before entrees arrive. Then you end up eating a barely warm entrees by the time you get to it. read more

When you walk in this hole in the restaurant , you immediately notice the ambiance and calm vibe. Everything on the menu was delicious from the spring rolls to the pho to the pork chop bowls. The service was also super fast. Would definitely come back again and bring friends with! read more
