Durian cheese bun - this thing is over $8
    Sophie T.

I'm a sucker for durian dessert and so here's the verdict on the durian cheese bun: it works quite well! The slight savory taste from the cream cheese adds an extra dimension to the sweetness from the durian, creating a nice complement. Beware thou if you are not used to durian, you are dealing with two very pungent ingredients (mostly the durian, less so the cheese) here. Opening up the packaging, the smell will either have you running for the door or draw you in for a taste. Apologies to the lady beside me on the TTC....don't think she's a fan. My only criticism is that there isn't quite enough fillings in the bun.

Delish cheese buns, i got the durian and sweet potato. The buns were super soft and had the perfect balance of flavouring and cheese. It is pricy but worth the treat once in a while. I also got the cream puffs but only ate them the day after so it wasn't that good. Need to come back for the puffs and try them on the same day; the filling was good though.

Durian cheese bread, for a limited time

Location/Service This little shop is along Yonge St - in between Bloor and Wellesley, easily accessible by TTC. Limited street parking is available - couldn't detect if there are other parking available. The shop is very small - no seating available (i.e. buy-and-go). Simple and bright decor - I do like how they leverage windows to bring in natural lightning that highlight/showcase their bakery products. Serving staff was nice and made recommendations since I had no idea what to order or how their products are made. Food Ended up ordering a seasonal Durian Cheese Bun (~$6). Price wise seems reasonable, as it is quite huge in size (almost a slice of a pizza). This flavour has the same basis of their original cheese bun, which has a vanilla/cream cheesy interior - but adding real durian pieces that makes it extra creamy/mushy on the inside. The durian doesn't overpower the cheese and can still distinctly divide the outer layer of the bread, which is thick but soft to chew on. I really enjoyed the combo and the bread overall. It does get a little messy to eat since it's cheese filling (suggest getting a fork if you don't want your hands dirty), but they have it nicely packaged so you can eat it anywhere and easily take it with you. The staff (assume owner) mentioned that they are in the works of opening another location near STC area - looking forward to it as it will be a more convenient location for me!

I've been walking by this place so many times thinking I would give it a try. I finally did so in November last year and tried the durian cheese bun. The reason why I put only one star is because the employee came in from the back and was using a Kleenex to wipe or blow his nose. He placed it in a hidden place on the counter, assuming, I guess, that I did not see. He also did not wash his hands before serving me. Luckily, if I can say so, he did not touch the bun with his bare hands as it was already packaged in the plastic. He did seal it with a sticker though. I still gave the bun a try. I was expecting more of a cake experience vs a bread experience. Which I should have known better as this place is supposed to be a 'bakery'. I really enjoyed the nice durian flavour and texture but the bun / bread piece was a bit too boring for me. It was more like eating bread with parts of cheesy durian. Also, I thought it was overpriced for the quality and taste level. To my point of view, you can have a way better use if your money. Will not come back.

Been wanting to try this place for a while cuz ive heard of it years ago in hk. And now its in toronto! But its location wasnt somewhere i usually hang in, and i happened to be able to make a run. Cant miss the big sign on yonge. Green P right across the street. What I ordered: Original cheese bun Chocolate cheese bun Sweet potato and charcoal cheese bun Original cheese puff Matcha cheese puff Lychee cheese puff Hmmm! Everything tasted great. But its ure not a fan of cream cheese, then this is not ur place! I loved their filling, especially the lychee flavour. I liked the bun more than the puff. Mainly cuz the pastry of the puff was so soft and not fluffy. Didnt seem like it raise much. But i also wouldnt heat it up cuz the filling might melt. Hence, knocked of a star. But i would recommend it you love cream cheese. Amazing flavours!

If I could give zero stars I would but this is the lowest Yelp allows. I love supporting local businesses and this is the first time I've decided to write such an awful review of one. The conversation between myself and an employee (or owner) of Cheese Baker TO on instagram is posted below. They are a shady business and tried to make $5 on delivery fee when I would have happily tipped more in that amount. Then after confirming the order, giving me an outrageous self pick up window of between 2-6pm with a 30min "heads up" they "missed my order". How could they have missed an order that was confirmed just the night before? Worst part is that they gave me a list of what was customers addresses so I could go to their house to pick up. That seems like an invasion of privacy to have someone random show up at your house. I am beyond shocked that this is how a business choose to treat their customers. I will never order from them again.

Mango cheese bun with fresh mango cream cheese and mango chunks

I was so excited to know that Guschlbauer opened their first North American location here in Toronto! I missed the chance to try these Austrian quarter cheese buns when I was in Hong Kong. So, I couldn't miss this opportunity during their soft opening with a 20% off promotion. Their cute little shop is conveniently located on Yonge and Bloor and is hard to miss with their bright yellow signage. Currently, they offer the original, chocolate, strawberry and mango flavour for their cheese buns, fresh fruit slush and a few flavours for cream puffs. As I was deciding what to order at the counter, I could see their chef filling each quarter bun with loads of cream cheese in front of me. That tells me they really don't skim out on their fillings in their buns. And seeing all the fresh mangoes on 'display', I just had to try out their mango cheese bun. To my expectation, it was filled with creamy mango flavoured cream cheese and mango chunks. The taste wasn't overly sweet which I especially like. The bun was also soft and spongy and actually not hard and dry like I thought it was. I also enjoy the fact that I could eat these cheese buns 2 ways. I could either reheat them in the microwave for 10 seconds to have an oozing lava effect or refrigerate them for a bit to get an ice cream cake kind of result. The staff took some time to explain to me the origin of their recipe and that they were still trying to fine tune their products and services before they officially launch.I appreciated their sincerity and commitment on their new business and as a start up, I think they deserve a lot of encouragement to be able to survive in such a competitive Toronto market. And for this reason, I gave them a 5-star. I hope to see them perfect their cheese buns and I'd be willing to come back and try out other flavours and their cream puffs.

    Matcha Puff ($1.90)

Guschlbauer's cream puff is good. I love my Matcha Cream Puff ($2.49) and it was perfect snack to go with my coffee. The pastry itself was buttery went well with the cheesy creamy filling. I would stick with the puff instead and will definitely skip the cheese bun especially at the price point.

    * MANGO BUN

I finally got to try the Austrian Guschlbauer buns! I've heard about this bun-hype from Hong Kong but never got a chance to try it. Now that it opened its first location in North America, I finally got to grab some for myself! It's located at Yonge and Bloor and it was easy to find because their logo and shop front is bright yellow. There was a big line up when I arrived because they're doing a soft opening discount - 20% off. I'd recommend: * Mango bun (maybe a personal preference because I like mangos) * Original bun * Chocolate cream puff * Green tea cream puff Note: These buns are huge and filling! I think one bun is actually ok to share between two people.. unless you're really hangry. I bought a bunch of buns to try to make my wait worth-while. I reaaaally wanted to try the sweet potato flavour bun! I think they have it available in Hong Kong right now, I hope they have it at this location soon :)

if you love cream cheese filled buns and puffs this is the place to grab some delicious and fresh baked goods!! i got to try four flavours of their cream puffs and each puff was filled with so much cream cheese. my fav has to be the matcha and lychee ones. i also got to try their strawberry, soy milk and chocolate cheese bun. it was so soft and loved every layer filled with cream cheese!! their strawberry cheese bun includes bits of strawberries!

Working close to Yonge-Bloor has its benefits. One of those benefits being that you get to see the development of the street and buildings along with the stores that are opening. Based on the name, I would not have guessed it had an Asian influence. However, it is very apparent when you see the product itself. Arrived closer towards closing for their soft launch. The most popular flavours were the original (which was sold out) and the mango. Didn't have a choice so I decided to opt for the mango. The bread has a great moisture and elasticity to it. In between the bread you get the soft velvety cream cheese. Along with the cream cheese there were surprise mango chunks which was nice. Definitely reminds you of a cheesecake, but reality does sink in that at the end of the day it's just bread. Taste is definitely 4/5 Price is 2/5, expensive for what you get, would feel fair at half the price.

I hate to say it - Guschlbauer is definitely overrated. I visited the shop on its soft opening day because of the discounts, but it still cost me more than 10 dollars (for 2 pieces of bread). The bread itself was hard and flat & it hardly tastes like how it looks like. As for the cheese...come on, of course it tastes nice on a piece of bread. It is the exact same thing with bagels & cream cheese or any other combination of cheese and bread. Since Guschlbauer did not impress me in any respect, I do not think I'll be back for another visit unless they have done something revolutionary. Also, I do not like how it is marketed as "Austrian cheese buns" while it has nothing to do with the country. I thought it's from China? Why don't they just market themselves as Chinese cheese buns? I hope the false marketing was not the result of cultural degradation (to both Chinese & Austrian).

The food is great. But to sum.it all up, it's essentially a quarter of a super soft round load of bread spread with flavoured cream cheese. Also it says 5 layers but I'm not sure what the layers are supposed to be. I guess they are counting the horizonal cuts in the bread. Don't get me wrong. I loved it, bit it was kind of pricy for what it was. If I was in the neighborhood I may consider buying another one. I had the strawberry, and it was really delicious. But once again, it was like a super soft chunk of bread spread with strawberry cream cheese.

The pastries and mochi breads are absolutely exquisite! I tried the black sesame mochi bread--light, pillowy, and filled with a delightful little white mochi surprise. The crème brûlée almond tart was incredible too, with its thick, eggy custard and a blueberry-almond center. And the Hitotoki matcha tart? Gorgeous and just perfect. It was my first visit, and I discovered the bakery through their 2nd-anniversary IG post. I bought about $20 worth of treats and got to spin their prize wheel--and I actually won the Grand Prize: a limited-edition gold Nespresso & milk frother kit! I literally jumped for joy. Yet another reason to love this incredible bakery!

But there was no "lava" at all... just a layer of cream sitting on a thick tart base. You do get some matcha flavour, but definitely not that rich and flowing matcha sauce I saw in those online reels. Matcha Mont Blanc - Too sweet. The green noodle-shaped topping is actually made from a kind of bean paste - not much matcha taste, but had a strong bean flavour instead. And again, it was too sweet to my liking. Taro Tart - This one was good. Taro-flavoured cream on top, with taro paste underneath, then a layer of custard with mochi at the bottom. Had a rich taro flavour. Still a bit sweet, but not as overwhelming as the Mont Blanc. Overall it was not bad, although TBH I haven't really found great matcha desserts in Toronto so far.

This place was also super poppin' when I got there. It was earlish in the day around 10:30am and it seemed all the tables were pretty much taken. They are adding a dinner menu which is very exciting. Their pastries are phenomenal!!! Picked up a plum and pistachio tart, a chocolate mousse cake and an apple Danish for my mom. Plus a chocolate caramelized croissant. So much butter, and yet so good.
